Birthday Celebrations Turned into Amazing Donations This is Ray and he just turned 11. What did he do for his second birthday in double digits? He decided to forego birthday presents and get things for us here at the League. He turned his birthday into donations for a great cause. He found us by searching for a no-kill shelter online. He lives in Loveland with his family. Thanks Ray! You are a great young man and we appreciate you! -----------------------------> This is Mallory. Her birthday was Oct 25 and she turned 14. While a lot of teenagers would be out spending their gift cards and money on themselves, Mallory decided to buy things for the animals here at LFAW. How cool is that? Rock on Mallory. We appreciate you and your thoughtfulness. Have an amazing year being 14! Thank you! <--------------------------------- Meet Cate. She had a birthday also and decided to use her birthday party to donate to the League. She asked her party goers to give money so she could donate dog food. She donated over 300 pounds of food. You, Miss Cate, are an amazing young lady and we appreciate you! ---------------------------------> 3 LEAGUE LINES These dogs are looking for a home...or a sponsor Name: Chelsie Estimated Date of Birth: 06/2012 Breed: Hound Weight: 32 lbs Chelsie is a loving, social dog who craves attention from people as well as other dogs. She has had a rocky start in life and is just now beginning to learn dog manners. With the stability of a home and with consistent guidelines, Chelsie will thrive. She is a fast learner and just wants a chance. Come meet sweet Chelsie! Name: Stellah Estimated Date of Birth: 03/2012 Breed: Doberdesian Weight: 78 lbs With a possible mix of Doberman, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Great Dane, Stellah is one BIG girl. But she is SO gentle…until she sees a squirrel. She walks very well on a leash but be prepared to hold on tight if something small decides to move nearby. Stellah loves people and attention and would be content to sit in your lap but because she’s too large she’ll settle for “leaning”. Name: El Guapo Estimated Date of Birth: . 07/2010 Breed: Catahoula Weight: 53 lbs El Guapo is a very handsome and intelligent boy. He loves to be walked and does very well on leash. He’s also very good about greeting people nicely. In addition, he knows hand commands for sit and down, and he can even do some agility. He would make a great addition for a family that will play with him and give him lots of attention, and most of all, the petting he loves. Name: Wake Estimated Date of Birth: 01/2013 Breed: Coonhound Weight: 41 lbs Wake is a very happy, playful boy that loves to be with people. He is intelligent and responds nicely when asked to sit, stay and come. He would do well with an active family that will give him lots of attention, and has a yard so he can run and play fetch. Wake likes other dogs to play with, too. Name: Peggy Sue Estimated Date of Birth: 07/2010 Breed: Hound Weight: 32 lbs Peggy Sue is a charmer. She is also a trooper. She came to us as a stray and had a skin condition that had to be treated before she could be made available for adoption. She may have been missing some hair but she surely wasn’t missing a personality. She is a cheerful little girl who just wants attention. Peggy Sue loves people and does well when she is out on a leash. 4 LEAGUE LINES These cats are looking for a home... or a sponsor Name: Snickers Estimated Birth Date: 06/2013 GENDER: Male Breed: White Gray Snikers loves everything. He’s very friendly and easy going. He has a great time playing with toys. He enjoys other cats and surprise, surprise likes dogs! Snickers would make the perfect addition to any family. If you have children, dogs, or other cats, he would be fine with that. The more for him to play with! Name: Kinzy Estimated Date of Birth: 11/2009 GENDER: Female Breed: Siamese Kinzy is very outgoing and loves to sit on laps. She will purr constantly. Her mesmerizing blue eyes and Siamese markings makes her hard to resist. Kinzy would do best in a home with no other cats, or maybe just one, as she can be a little bossy. Name: Magnuhm Estimated Date of Birth: 05/2008 GENDER: Male Breed: Tabby Magnuhm loves human contact. You will be greeted at the door w hen you come visit him. If you sit down and don’t invite him to be on your lap, he will take it upon himself to join you there anyway. Magnuhm will fit in well with any family as long as there isn’t a dog. Even though he’s a big fellow, dogs scare him. There is a lot of him to love so you won’t need anything else. Name: Lacy Estimated Date of Birth: 08/2011 GENDER: Female Breed: Tortie Female You would never know that Lacy was a stray. She is extremely friendly with everyone that comes to visit. The more people that come see her, the happier she is. She doesn’t know a stranger, with other cats and humans. She’s anxious to be part of a loving home again. The more people in the family, the better! Lacy loves activity and would do great with children too. Name: Chang Breed: Siamese Estimated Date of Birth: 07/2013 GENDER: Male Chang is just a little thing and is shy, but he’s quickly learning how great humans are. Everyone comments on how handsome he is. He’s been watching other kittens in the room and is thinking he might enjoy joining in their games. Chang will be a great addition to any family as long as he’s given some time to settle in and get used to things. 5 LEAGUE LINES CAT EXPANSION NEWS & OPEN HOUSE Please join us on January 12 from 1:00 to 5:00 for the grand opening of our new cat area. Thanks to a very generous grant from the Joanie Bernard Foundation, the League for Animal Welfare is proud to announce the completion of the expansion of the cat area of its shelter located in Batavia, Ohio. The expansion will increase the League’s capacity to assist cats by adding four large suites, complete with attached screened porches, as well as four smaller suites designed for those with special needs. This is a dream come true for the felines-brand new fantastic rooms to play in while waiting for their “forever homes.” This expansion will allow the League to care for and adopt hundreds of cats every year. The adjacent porches allow the residents to get some fresh air as they watch the birds and squirrels play. In the spring and summer they get to enjoy watching the butterflies as they feed from the adjacent butterfly gardens. The project was overseen by Cat Committee Chair Joyce Blersch, with input from our Director of Animal Services, Sue Schellhous and former Shelter Manager, Mary Sue Bahr, along with the members of the cat committee. Please join us on January 12 to see the wonderful addition to our shelter. The cats will enjoy your visit. "Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this." ~ Anonymous The time changed and so did we! When you come into the League, you’ll notice fresh paint on the walls, a volunteer station with various tasks listed, an announcement board, a calendar of events, a new adoption sign and a customer area for the convenience of everyone. We have also changed our hours. We are open every day, except Monday and Thursday, from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. 6 LEAGUE LINES Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Closed 11-5 11-5 Closed 11-5 11-5 11-5 The 8th Annual Wine & Whiskers Tasting and Auction was a huge success this year! Connor here and I hope you’re as excited for fall and the Holiday Season as I am! So far, October and November at the League have been wonderful. Lots of fun volunteers have come and taken me for amazing walks in our trails and I’ve had so much fun romping in leaves and playing with my ball. I know you volunteers don’t get to hear it directly from us dogs, but know how thankful we are for you coming in cold weather, rainy weather, and in sunshine! Now, I’ve gotten quite a few letters in my mailbag recently and I’ve got lots of folks waiting to hear my wit and wisdom, so let’s get to it! Dear Connor, We recently adopted a loving pup who we are gradually getting adjusted to our schedule and our home. It’s been a lot of work. We’re also planning a huge family get together for Thanksgiving this year. We’ve worked so hard to get our pup on a schedule, will a dozen people coming and going for a whole weekend mess up his routine? Will we have to start over? -Worried in Walton Dear Worried, It’s so important to get pups on a schedule and to give them boundaries. It helps them understand what kind of behavior you want and expect from them. On the other hand, you still have to live your life! So keep it simple with a few of these guidelines, and then enjoy yourself! Before things get going, appoint a family member to be responsible for potty breaks, so your pup can stay on schedule. Be honest with yourself, though. If you’re doing all the cooking, potty breaks can’t be your responsibility, too. Pick someone who’s got time. Make sure your guests know not to give your pup scraps or treats. Rich holiday foods can wreak havoc on a pup’s digestive system and also set him up for future begging behaviors. If guests really want to treat your pup, give them a few morsels of his regular kibble or break dog treats into lots of tiny pieces. Build in breaks for your pup! If you’ve done crate training, give your pup a break every few hours in his crate so he doesn’t get overstimulated. Puppies love people and commotion and won’t typically know when to take themselves out of the game! So help him get the rest he needs before any problems pop up. 8 LEAGUE LINES If you’re really concerned about your pup being out of control, but you still want him to have attention and family time, consider tethering him to a willing family member. This can be as simple as looping his leash around a belt loop and having him hang out while everybody is watching football. Know that most dogs probably don’t need this much oversight, but if your doggie is particularly prone to being overstimulated or running for the door, this can be a short term option to keep him in the mix, while also keeping him safe. Well, Worried, I hope that helps you have a great Turkey Day! Oh, that reminds me! Most folks know that chocolate is bad for dogs, but as you’re cooking for the Holidays, remember to also never feed your dogs: onions, grapes, and raisins! These three can all show up in common Holiday recipes, so be vigilant about keeping garbage up and out of dogs’ reach. This goes double for turkey bones, which can be incredibly dangerous if your pup gets ahold of one. Be safe and have a wonderful Holiday Season! About Connor: Connor is a 9 year old male Shepherd mix, who has been waiting a very long time for a home of his own. He arrived at the shelter as a sweet, little puppy and has been cared for by the staff and volunteers since then. When he was just a few months old, he had to wear a brace for what was thought to be a vertebrae problem, but that turned out not to be the case. Since extra precaution was taken with him, he didn’t get exposed to many things, as puppies should be for socialization. He is still a sweet dog that just needs a little extra time to get to know people. Once he knows you, he will probably give you a big, toothy grin when he sees you! Connor loves to play with his ball, go for car rides to the park, and “swim” in the wading pool. He would prefer a home with no other dogs and someone that can give him the attention he deserves. Connor is on our My Last Hope Program. To learn more about him or this program, please contact the League’s Animal Care Director, Sue Schellhous, at 513-735-2299. Make a difference for a child and an animal this holiday season!! The League for Animal Welfare has teamed up with Patti Hanes and Scentsy to bring smiles to children's faces and awareness for the animals in our care. It's simple, visit pattijhanes.scentsy.us. Select the buddy you would like to purchase and donate to a child at Cincinnati Children's. Upon checkout, click on the League for Animal Welfare option and pay. The buddy you selected will be delivered to a child by a staffmember of the League for Animal Welfare on December 12. Generously, Patti Hanes will donate all commissions from the orders of the buddy's to the League! Volunteers Needed to Foster Dogs The League is looking for volunteers to foster dogs for short periods of time. One reason foster homes are needed is to provide a space for dogs until space becomes available at the shelter. Foster homes are also needed for dogs that are too stressed out by shelter life; dogs that have had surgery and need a quiet place to heal; dogs undergoing heartworm treatment who need to be kept in a calm environment; expectant moms, and moms with young puppies not ready to be placed for adoption yet. If you are interested in joining the foster program, please call the shelter at (513) 7352299, or send an email to [email protected] and include your name, number and email address. 9 LEAGUE LINES Wish List -Hand sanitizer -King-sized Kongs -Gift cards for Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Petsmart, Office Max -Small dog collars -Fabric softener -Laundry detergent -Soft beds for cats and small dogs -Bird seed -Distilled water -Letter-sized file folders -Soft dog treats -Canned cat and dog food -AA batteries -Comforters -Large Nylabone Durable Bones -Bleach -30 gallon & outdoor trash bags --Small dog biscuits -Paper towels -Squeaky toys -6’ non-retractable leashes -Two-pocket folders -First class postage stamps Our thanks go out to the generous people who have donated items from our Wish List, as well as those many other items we use to make everything better for our staff, volunteers, and residents. "Old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to." ~ Joe Gores The Scoop by Hark With the holidays upon us, your roving reporter is reminded that he came to this shelter as a youngster during the holidays. Hence, the name I was given. I will continue to try to remain optimistic, as all of the younger cats get adopted before our eyes. In my last feature I described the status of the expansion of the cat area, which was then underway. I am pleased that the project has now been completed, and the League has a total of 15 rooms to house cats, increasing capacity by 50%. Have I got a couple of beauts for you this issue. First up is my good buddy Henri. I’m surprised that Hank (as his closest friends call him) is still around. In addition to a beautiful orange and white coat and fantastic orange eyes, Henri is a playing machine. When he is not playing, Henri is enjoying himself lounging in a spot of sun. There is nothing I can say about Henri other than he is just about perfect. Please stop by and visit him in Room 11. You won’t leave empty-handed. The featured sweetheart this issue is Chang. Not only is he stunning with his beautiful blue eyes that show off his Siamese heritage, but he is also a super-sweet four month old baby boy. Chang loves to play, he is very shy, in a sweet way, and I think he should be with a patient family. As pur-plexing as it seems, Chang is still available, but I am sure he will not be for long. So come out now and honor yourself by adopting Chang from Room 6. Time to talk to the press about the grand opening of the expanded cat area, Hark 12 LEAGUE LINES Here are some League alumni and their adoptive families sharing some family portraits: I thought you might like to see how Ellie, aka Rambler, is growing into a beautiful dog… 5 ½ months old, 37 pounds at the vet today. She is very smart, responds to many commands, loyal and cuddly! Deb McCarthy Dear Anne (& Staff), I adopted Marlow, now Perry, a week ago. He is settling in beautifully. My cat is adjusting to him much quicker than I expected. Thank you for helping me choose the perfect dog! If you have an alumni photo for us to publish in League Lines, please e-mail it to [email protected] Sincerely, Gail Weldon Wanted to let you know that Tucker (aka Ulee) is settling quite nicely in his new home! And he loves his “Kitty City” too. Karen Young Casey (formerly Keegan) and Felix, our dog we've had, are doing great together! For only being here a few days, Casey has adapted exceedingly well. We were all having fun in the basement last night and we really got to see the playful, energetic, puppy side of him we hope to see more and more often. We're so glad he's entered our lives, can't thank the League enough for him, and can't wait for more family adventures in which he can now take part. Rachel Bowman 13 LEAGUE LINES LEAGUE ALUMNI UPDATES, CON’T My Lindy is a Super Dog and so very lovable. She takes to me more than my husband, but she loves him also. Your League is the greatest one in Ohio and we thank all of you for being so helpful. I have told many people of your place. It was so clean and all the employees were so full of energy and friendliness. Lindy will be with us for as long as we live. The vet said she had a lot of Beagle in her. But she is almost red. Thanks again! Linda and Jim Leak Lebanon, Ohio Don’t forget! You can also send us pictures and updates on our Facebook page. We love to share them! https://www.facebook.com/ leagueforanimalwelfare We will always be grateful to this no-kill shelter for contacting us several years ago about our beagle, Sophie Grace. She was dropped off by a truck driver who found her in Kentucky on a major highway. He recognized her tag she was wearing as having a “chip” in her. The shelter called us the next day and cared for her until we could drive from Eminence, Kentucky to get her. We never figured out how she got on that highway that day, but she is a happy, chubby, beagle to this day. Thanks again, Steve and Becky Wood I love to volunteer at the League and adopted Gary, now Prince, in the middle of October. He loves to play. I already had a 5 year old female and thought they would get along, let’s just say they are working on it. Prince lays on me when I’m asleep and wakes me up purring loudly in my ear. He’s very energetic, talkative, loving and well behaved in the house. He was at the shelter less than a week and I decided I had to have him. Jaime Fry 14 LEAGUE LINES LEAGUE ALUMNI UPDATES, CON’T The kittens are doing very well. We have renamed them -Hart is now Aggie, and Zelma is now Zelda. We have made an appointment for Aggie's shots next week. Our 14-year old female, Lizzie, is adjusting fairly well. She really missed all her old friends. I think that Zelda really wants to be friends with her, but Lizzie is not quite ready, though she is showing interest. I was very surprised how loud Zelda's growl is, even though she is quite squeaky otherwise. Of course there was a great deal of growling and hissing from all of them on the first day. Zelda only wanted to be held the first two days but is now opening up, exploring, and doing kitten things. Perhaps she was frightened and / or feeling under the weather from her de-worming. But she seems quite happy now. I wouldn't say that Aggie is being a "good girl", exactly. She is all about being the boss and is finding out that the others have their own opinions about that. But she is enjoying herself immensely otherwise and really keeps us entertained. Chris Campbell Paisley is enjoying her new home and settling in quite comfortably. Frankie “duding” it up watching football. Let it all hang out Frankie. Enjoy! LEAGUE LINES 15 In Memory Back in 2001, I was working as a sales manager for Lazarus department stores. Each month, we would “adopt” a charity, and the organization we chose for one month was the League for Animal Welfare. We put a flyer together with photos of actual dogs and cats that were available for adoption. One of the photos really caught my eye. It was an adorable hound mix named Shelton, tan colored with white markings. He looked so cute, with a look that seemed to say, “I’m really smart and have lots of personality.” Looking at that photo was when I first thought that I would really like to have a dog. At the time though, I was living in a downtown apartment where owning a dog was out of the question. Well, a few months later I purchased and moved into my first house. And of course, I immediately wanted to adopt a dog, so I went onto the League’s website. Much to my surprise, Shelton was still listed as being up for adoption. So within a couple days, I made my first visit to your facility, intent on coming home with a new canine companion. Your staff was so helpful, taking me through to see all the available dogs. About that time I asked if Shelton was still available. He was, and I was soon looking at him, sitting a little sideways with a look of superiority, calm as could be. At that point I fell in love. However, the nice lady who was taking me through the facility seemed like she was trying to talk me into choosing just about any other dog instead of Shelton. When I mentioned that Shelton seemed like such a calm dog, and I really did want to meet him, she just laughed. However, I more or less insisted. Shelton, as she predicted, was anything but calm. I was then told about how he had been found as a stray, adopted twice and returned to the shelter twice. But it didn’t matter; I knew I had met my new best friend. So Shelton went home with me that afternoon, throwing up in the car on the way. I wish I could say that it was smooth sailing, but it wasn’t. For the next several months he tried my patience as he chewed everything in sight. Well, in time he calmed down; and within a year we had adopted Buster from the League as well. There is another story there, but I will save that for another time. Shelton soon became my best friend, always by my side and following me everywhere I went. He really was smart, and I have never met another dog with a personality like his. Well, I am sad to report that Shelton passed away suddenly early Monday morning while we were boarding Buster and him at the vet while we were out of town for a family wedding. He was getting old, and lately had a hard time getting around, but nevertheless it was still a shock; one that is just now setting in as I fight to hold back my tears. I just wanted to let you know that I think I gave Shelton a great life; and as importantly he gave me a great life for twelve wonderful years. So I just wanted to thank the League for Animal Welfare for allowing me to have the greatest experience ever. So now for the favor I mentioned. As I said, I first became aware of Shelton from a photo on your website. By any chance would that photo still be somewhere in your records? If so, it would be something that I would truly cherish. A digital copy sent by email would suffice. I understand if this is not possible, but I thought I would ask. Again, thank you for all the great work you do at the League. And thank you for Shelton. My hope is that sometime in the future I will feel ready to meet a new best friend from your organization. Sincerely, Ken Colegrove 16 LEAGUE LINES PET PICTURES WITH SANTA Hey — your pets want to visit with Santa and have their pictures taken too! We will once again be teaming-up with the Pet Bowl. It's the train company's way to show appreciation to their workers and families. Everyone got to enjoy food, games, prizes, giveaways, raffles and rides. This year's event was held at Stricker's Grove. The League for Animal Welfare was chosen by CSX employee Matt Tridico to be the recipient of the proceeds for the dunk tank. Office Manager, Laura Reinbolt and her 16 year old son, Blake worked the tank from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Blake lifted every last child up so they could take a shot! Supervisors signed up to work the tank, so employees got a kick out of dunking their bosses. The choice was three balls for $1 or $5 just to run up and hit the button, dunking whomever was in the booth. Many employees took advantage of the $5 offer. Thanks to everyone who participated, the League brought in $385! Special thanks to Laura, Matt, and Blake, as well as Brenda Combs, David and Suzi Hamby, John Arnwine, and Sandy Reed. Thanks for a great day and your support, CSX! If you hold a cat by the tail you learn things you cannot learn any other way. ~Mark Twain Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at nothing, right in your ear. You can teach a cat to do anything that it wants to do. You can trust your dog to guard your house but never trust your dog to guard your sandwich. “Meow” means “woof ” in cat.” ~George Carlin http://coolfunnyquotes.com 21 ASK MS. CATTY Dear Ms. Catty, Our cat, Phoebe, is driving us crazy. She frequently sneaks outdoors and engages in very strange behavior. She sometimes jumps on the roof of the house and lets out horrible howling noises. We are very worried and don’t know what to do. Please help, Ms. Catty. Mortified in Mt. Adams Dear Mortified: Based on the behavior that you are describing, I am guessing that Phoebe is not spayed. Cats that are not spayed have a biological need, driven by hormones, to mate. That would explain her unusual behavior of wanting to sneak outside; she is in search of tomcats to mate with. The strange sound that you hear is called caterwauling. Cats frequently make this sound prior to and during the mating ritual. It can be most disconcerting to the cat’s humans. I strongly urge you to have Phoebe checked out by your vet to make sure that she has no medical conditions that could be causing her behavior. While there, please schedule Phoebe to be spayed. Aside from preventing unwanted pregnancy and adding to the already enormous ranks of homeless and unwanted cats, altered cats suffer from fewer medical issues and are less likely to roam, get into fights, and be injured by external forces such as cars and malicious humans. While at the vet, you should also have Phoebe micro-chipped so that if she sneaks out in the future she can be scanned and returned to you. FUN FACT: Have you ever wondered why kittens in a litter sometimes look so different? It is because more than one tomcat can impregnate a female while in heat and each kitten in a litter can have a different father. Ms. Catty answers questions of interest to those humans intelligent enough to share a household with a pet.
