History of National
Philanthropy Day
In 1986, when President Ronald Reagan
enabling members, prospective members,
proclaimed November 15 as National
and representatives of other organizations
Philanthropy Day®, the San Diego community
to practice effective and ethical fundraising.
had already been celebrating the culture
of philanthropy for 14 years. Each fall,
communities throughout the United States
and Canada join together to honor the spirit
of giving in their own regions. National
Philanthropy Day® offers an opportunity
to reflect on the meaning of charitable
giving. It is coordinated and supported on
an international scale by the Association of
Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
In November 2011, more than 1,000 people
attended San Diego’s National Philanthropy
Day celebration. This commitment from
the San Diego community proves that
organizations and individuals are truly
beginning to understand the culture of
philanthropy.
About AFP San Diego

these nonprofit organizations lies within
successful philanthropic endeavors. AFP
San Diego Chapter’s educational outreach
to nonprofit organizations is critical in
promoting the best practices and standards
for ethical fundraising. AFP San Diego
Chapter has a vital role in ensuring that
philanthropy in San Diego will thrive
as
