Dating from the 14th century and originally from
the Echizen Province Hosho is a highly refined
Kozo paper noted for its thickness, strength and
fluffiness. While traditionally used in Japan for
woodcut printing because it resists shrinking
many artists find its absorbency interesting for

(Kozogami) These strong and durable papers
are made principally with Kozo fiber. They have
excellent shape retention upon drying in woodblock
printing as well as wet processes such as stone
and fish rubbing. Kozo is the principal fiber used
in most Japanese papers and is noted for its fiber

The Suzuri is a flat grinding stone used to make
Sumi ink. It has a sloping indentation which
forms a small well at one end. A Sumi ink stick is
ground on the stone surface with plain water to

Care and Usage of the Suzuri Stone
To avoid unevenness, indentations and
grooves, grind the ink over the entire surface of the stone. Never leave the ink stick
on the wet stone surface. It will adhere and
damage the stone’s surface. Wash the stone
in plain water after each use. To preserve
the surface of the stone, it is recommended
that you wash the stone with your fingers.

Sumi Ink Stick
More than 3,000 years ago, Asian artisans
discovered how to turn the residue from burnt
wood into one of the most important and lasting
vehicles of human expression: ink. For more than
a thousand years, the method of making Sumi
sticks has remained the same. Soot from pine or
certain vegetable oils mixed with animal or fish
glue is molded and dried to form a well-shaped
solid block which, when ground on a Suzuri
stone with water, turns to ink. It is unsurpassed
for producing the famous Five Colors, or shades
of black, that form the basis of “monochromatic”
Sumi painting. The subtlety of Sumi ink is evident
in the variety of tones and values it produces.

Tips on usage: Throw away any left over ink; using
this ink will produce inferior tones. Do not leave
moisture on the Sumi stick. Wipe it immediately
with a cloth. Store ink sticks at moderate
temperature and humidity.

have been developed primarily for various styles
of brush calligraphy and for Sumi-e, an ancient
style of Oriental painting renowned for its simplicity, grace and beauty.

Unlike watercolor, oil and most other paintbrushes, Sumi brushes are composed of two separate
parts. The central core, which determines the
height and basic function of the brush, is made
of relatively stiff hairs gathered to form a tapered
point. The outer wrapping consists of softer hairs
which are selected for their greater water-holding
capacity and for facilitating smooth strokes. The
hairs of the inner core and of the outer wrapping
are the same length and come to a point when
dipped into water. The hair structure ensures
smooth maneuverability and dynamic strokes
whether light or heavy pressure is applied.

Haboku Stroke Brushes
Produced only by Yasutomo, this orthodox Sumie painting brush is made of fine-quality horse
hair. Some synthetic hairs, specially treated
to increase their capacity to carry water, are
included to strengthen the tip and add resiliency

Cleaning Brushes
Brushes must be cared for correctly in order to last.
A good-quality brush can last a lifetime if properly
cleaned and stored after use.
Watercolor brushes need only be rinsed thoroughly in
clean water. It is important that they are clean to the
base where the hair enters the ferrule. This prevents
paint buildup which can ruin the brush. Reshape and
allow to dry.
Brushes used with oil or acrylic paint should be cleaned
first with the appropriate solvent (turpentine, paint
thinner or water), then washed in soapy water and
rinsed. Repeat until the brush is free of all traces of
color, then reshape and allow to dry.
Removing dried paint with paint remover or lacquer
thinner is not recommended. It can damage the cement
that binds the hair in the ferrule.
