In this unit you will be in contact with Webquests methodology, which are
activities that involve the use of Internet, as well as, support to different disciplines. It
was created by Bernie Dodge in 1995, at San Diego State University, who defines
Webquests as “an inquiry- orientated activity in which most or all information that
learners interact with comes from research on the Web”(Dodge, 1995). Since then
this methodology of learning has been spread out around the world.
The WebQuests can be applied to English teaching language in order to
promote a collaborative learning by means of a guided exploration of internet
resources. As a methodology, all webquests have six essential basic instructions to
follow in the activity´s development: Introduction, task, process, Information,
Resources and Evaluation. Exploring the methodology of a Webquest, specially to
teach a language. In fact, it could take advantages from the use of technology in
several important ways. When it is used correctly, it can help teachers and students
to have a collaborative work. It enables students to interact directly with the context,
as well as, make them informed from different perspectives. Such perspecives are
mediated by the instructions‟ process in a context in which students can take
advantages from learning as a form of social interaction.
The purpose of the our theme focus on: “The New Seven Wonders of the
World”. In this sense, the main intention is that our students can recognize that
learning a language allows us to have access from several culture around the world
and at the same time we can incorporate to our culture other relevant subjects and
aspects.
This pretentious aim can be achieved by means of a selection of a range
cultural texts to be explored in English classes. Finally it may be reminded to all of us
that we do not really have to travel anywhere to experience knowledge, due to the
fact that we can learn about the diversity of the world's cultures surfing on the Web.
This assignment can be adapted to any kind of learning activities in order to fit in our
students individual needs.
The time limit may be extended or shortened based on the grade and the level
of your class. This web quest is designed for students in 8th grade. You can find
more example at: http://webquest.org/search/index.php.
4
Before doing this Webquest try to check if you students have digital literacy
skills to handle with technology. In under that we divided this pedagogical material in
two parts one to deal with this and a second one to the application of webquest itself.
There are teachers’ tips to help you handle with this material.
5

The Internet is a vast network that connects many independent networks
spanning over 170 countries in the World. It links computers of many different types,
sizes, and operating systems, and, of course, the many people of those countries
that use the Internet to communicate.
WHAT CAN I DO ON THE INTERNET?
The Internet Protocol makes it possible for you to communicate in various
ways, find things that interest you, and exchange information and files. The most
common things you can do are:

Get information on almost any subject by searching the web. It takes some skill to
search efficiently, and since anyone can publish just about anything, there is lots
of misinformation on the web, too. You need to develop some skill in evaluating
the accuracy and reliability of the information you find.

Send and receive email or chat or exchange messages with people all over the
world. Almost as fast as the telephone, there is never a busy signal, and you
never play phone tag.

Join discussion groups about a common subject with message boards,
Newsgroups and email discussion lists.

Get or exchange software and files with the File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

Publish your own material on the web in blogs, message boards, or your own web
pages. http://www.walthowe.com/navnet/faq/internet.html - acessado em 16/04/2010

Now, you are going to read some texts about the New seven wonders of the
world.
Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China was built mainly to protect the Chinese Empire from
northern invaders. The first sections were built in the Seventh Century BC when
China was still divided into many small states. The construction of the Great Wall
continued until the beginning of the Qing Dynasty (1644) and length was then over 6,
000 kilometers. Over the dynasties the Great Wall was eroded, built, rebuilt and
extended many times. The Great Wall is not just a wall. Other defensive works such
as forts passes and beacon towers were built along the Wall to house auxiliary
soldiers, store grain and weapons, and transmit military information.
Today the world has completely changed and a few sections of the Great Wall
have become some of the greatest tourist attractions in the world. The longest wall in
the world, it is an awe-inspiring feat of ancient defensive architecture. Its winding path
over rugged country and steep mountains takes in some great scenery. The Great
Wall is the building project with the longest duration and greatest cost in human lives,
17
blood, sweat and tears. It deserves its place among "the New Seven Wonders of the
World" and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in China.

Petra, Jordan
Described by the UNESCO as “one of the most precious cultural properties of
man‟s cultural heritage”, Petra is an archeological site on the slope of Mount Hor. It is
one of the new wonders of the world and is famous for its rock-cut architecture.
This site was kept hidden until 1812 when it was discovered by a Swiss
explorer. It was said to have been prepared by God for the Jewish people. Petra
once flourished under the Roman empire but a rapid decline began with the Arabian
trade being taken elsewhere. Then an earthquake caused a great deal of destruction.
Tourists frequent the place to get a glimpse of the ruins of this beautiful city.

Statue of Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The
statue is 120 ft tall and has a weight of 635 tones. It is now a part of the new Seven
Wonders of the World. It is located in the Corcovado Mountain which is at a peak of
20
700 meters i.e. 2, 300 feet in the Tujuca forest National Park overlooking the city. The
statue is made of concrete and soapstone. As a symbol of Christianity, it has become
an important icon of Brazil, with Jesus Christ appearing to open his arms wide to
embrace the entire city below.
It was in 1850‟s when for the first time it was suggested to make the statue of
Christ on the top of Corcovado by a catholic priest called Pedro Maria Boss. The
request of the finance was sent to Princess Isabel to build this huge religious
mountain. Initially, the idea was not thought to be a very good one. It was only in
1921, when a need and a proposal of a large landmark were thought about and
finally the statue was made by the catholic Circle of Rio.
During this time, in order to gain more publicity, a group organized an event for
a week where donations were taken from the public and signatures were taken for
those who were in favor of the making of the statue. Most of the donations came from
the Brazilian Catholics. A lot of suggestions were given; some suggest that the cross
of the Christ should be represented along with Christ, or an idol of Jesus with a globe
in his hands. But finally, a statue of Jesus with open arms was chosen. Construction
of this religious symbol took five years to complete, beginning in 1926 and ending in
1931. The brilliance of its engineers was revealed when it was struck by lightning in
February of 2008 during an electrical storm. Several trees were felled by that storm,
but the statue was left unscathed, owing to the fact that it was made with a top layer
of soapstone, which is a good insulator.

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu in Peru, which means „Old Peak, ” is one of the most enigmatic
ancient sites in the world. According to legend, Machu Picchu was long ago
considered to be a sacred place. The credit for the creation of the extraordinary city
goes to the Inca people who have erected many stone structures and turned the
place into a work of art.
22
Two thousand feet above the Urubamba river, these ruins consist of baths,
temples, palaces, and about 150 houses, all very well preserved. These gray granite
structures, some of which weigh more than 50 tons, are so perfectly sculpted that
they are nothing less than works of architectural genius. They were rediscovered by a
Yale archaeologist in 1911. The ethereal beauty, workmanship, and history of the
place attracts millions of tourists each year.

Chichén Itzá
Chichén Itzá, most important city of the Maya peoples, now an archaeological
site, 29 km (18 mi) southwest of Valladolid, Mexico, in the northern part of the
Yucatán Peninsula. The name, meaning “Mouth of the Wells of Itzá, ” is derived from
the Itzá tribe of Maya Native Americans that formerly occupied it and from the two
natural wells that supplied the water; the religious and cultural life of the city was
centered on city with those wells. Chichén Itzá was founded early in the 6th century
ad and abandoned about the year 670. Rebuilt some 300 years later, when the Itzá
returned to the region, it became the most important city of northern Yucatán and a
center of Maya culture. The architecture of this period shows Toltec influence, but it is
unclear (how that influence gained hold in Chichen Itzá. The city finally fell in around
1200. Subsequently, the Itzá appear to have been a part of an alliance in the
Postclassic center of Mayapán, which itself collapsed in the century before the
Spanish conquest.

Colosseum, largest and most famous ancient Roman amphitheater. The
emperor Vespasian, who ruled Rome from ad 69 to 79, began construction of the
city‟s Colosseum and his son, the Roman emperor Titus, dedicated it in ad 80. The
Colosseum was completed by Vespasian‟s younger son, Domitian, who succeeded
Titus as emperor in 81. The structure was originally called the Flavian Amphitheater.
Modifications and restorations necessitated by fires and earthquakes were made to
the Colosseum until the early 6th century. In succeeding centuries the Colosseum
suffered from neglect, earthquakes, and damage done by builders. Still, slightly more
than one-third of the outer arcades, comprising a number of the arches on the north

side, remain standing. The inner skeleton, which supported the cavea (seating
space), is also substantially intact. All marble, stucco, and metal decorations,

The Taj Mahal in India is one of the wonders of the world and is one of the
most beautiful mausoleums constructed by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, in
memory of his favorite queen, Mumtaz Mahal. Located in Agra, white marble was
used in the construction of this symbol of love, and Taj Mahal considered to be the
pinnacle of Mughal architecture..
As the story goes, the emperor was grief-stricken when he lost his beloved
third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It took thousands of craftsmen and artisans, and about
twenty years to construct it. The masons, stone cutters, carvers, inlayers,
calligraphers, painters, and others were brought from throughout the entire empire as
well as from Iran and Central Asia. Semi-precious stones were used for inlay
ornamentation. It later became the mausoleum of Shah Jahan too. This is a huge
tourist attraction with one to two million tourists visiting it every year.

ANEXOS
Available in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFI7zAgrDN0
Professor(a)
Maravilhas do Mundo Moderno.
Vídeo sugerido: Disponível em: http://www.youtube.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iary32-Y94 acessado em 18/04/2010
PROCEDIMENTOS:

Professor(a)
trabalho do computador.
leitura.
