of Land Brandenburg
Welcome to the Airport Region BER!
Dear readers,
this brochure showcases the powerhouse of Brandenburg – the
Airport Region BER. In order to promote economic growth, the three
municipalities Königs Wusterhausen, Schönefeld and Wildau have been
grouped together to form the Regional Growth Core Schönefelder Kreuz.
Its objective is to harness the economic potential of the capital city's new
airport and the surrounding region for both companies and investors.
Brandenburg's industrial expertise in, for example, aerospace, warehousing
and logistics, combined with the range of services on offer provides the
best possible basis for achieving this goal. The Airport Region BER is a
unique location with excellent prospects for the future, offering investors
and their employees a vibrant combination of business, work, housing,
leisure and education. Its excellent transport infrastructure opens the door
to many European countries – regardless of whether by land, water or air.
The capital's new airport BER is the most important infrastructure project
in the German capital region of Berlin-Brandenburg. It has a profound and
positive effect on the regional economy: creation of high-quality jobs and
development of new business relationships; and above average economic
growth. Your employees will also find this to be a highly desirable place to
live and work in the future.
Take a look at the Airport Region BER and see for yourself how your
company can become part of a strong community. Get involved today
and influence the future!
Yours,

Berlin Brandenburg Airport as a driver for long-term
sustainable growth
The area surrounding the Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is located close
to Berlin, in the heart of Europe. It is an attractive location to live and to
do business. The Airport Region BER encompasses i. a. three municipalities Königs Wusterhausen, Schönefeld and Wildau – which were grouped together
to form the regional growth core Schönefelder Kreuz.
The capital's Airport (Berlin Brandenburg) Willy Brandt, also known by its
IATA code BER, is the most important asset of the region as it is its largest
infrastructure project and the driving force in the economy. Once it commences
operations, BER will further boost economic growth in a region that is already
thriving. The BER airport will create 50,000 new jobs; a further 73,000 jobs are
expected to be created in subsequent years on the back of rising passenger
numbers.
Berlin will become the European capital with the shortest distance between the
airport and the city centre, which will be only 30 minutes away by car or public
transport.
A thriving region
The region's economy and population are growing quickly. Many high-profile
companies are based here, and as it is located Southeast of Berlin, the region
is also a highly desirable residential area. The prestigious Technical University of
Applied Sciences Wildau and the SMB Science and Technology Park Wildau
help foster stronger links between academic institutions and business and
contribute to creating attractive conditions for innovative companies to
move here.
Last but not least, the Airport Region BER is set to benefit from everyone at the
local level being supportive of both the businesses and the residents and the
ability to identify and address topical issues such as securing a supply of skilled
labour or sustainable growth at an early stage. On the following pages, you can
find out more about one of the most exciting regions in Germany!

Excellent location
The Airport Region BER is located in the district of
Dahme-Spreewald in Brandenburg and borders directly on
Germany's capital Berlin. Its geographic location is special in
many ways. The proximity to Berlin facilitates access to political
and business decision-makers. The location benefits from
good funding conditions and an innovative, business-oriented
atmosphere. With around five million inhabitants, the capital
region is criss-crossed by national and international transport
routes. Such a comprehensive and efficient transport network is
unique in its form. The dense network of motorways, railways and
waterways, as well as the international airports in Berlin and
Schönefeld ensure that goods and people are transported quickly
and easily.
Our range of services
Fast data
streams
The data connections
in the capital region are
very good by international
standards. All German
and international
network operators
offer fast communication
services nationwide using
fully digital broadband and
mobile networks.
By grouping the municipalities Königs Wusterhausen, Schönefeld
and Wildau together to form the Regional Growth Core, the region
can offer industry expertise that holds out great promise for the
future. Numerous high-profile companies have already relocated
here and are expanding. The existing growth momentum will
receive a further boost once the BER airport commences
operations.
These qualities make this a special location suitable for long-term
investment, offering a highly interconnected work environment,
while being a desirable and enjoyable place to live. The Airport
Region BER is one of the most important and most attractive
economic areas in Central Europe both from the German and
international point of view.

civil aviation, equipment, defence and security, unmanned aerial
systems, engines and materials and welcomed 1203 exhibitors
from 40 countries and around 120,000 visitors. The Regional
Growth Core is a long-standing successful exhibitor at the ILA.
Even outside the air show, the region is becoming a centre for
aerospace in Germany. Locally, around 16,000 people currently
work in the industry, which focuses on engine development and
manufacturing, light aircraft manufacturing, component and
system manufacturing as well as repairs and maintenance of
the equipment.

Fostering strong links between academic
institutions and business: Wildau
The well-established SMB Science and Technology Park in Wildau
links the present and the future. From 1900 to 1945, this was the
location of one of the largest locomotive factories in Germany.
Today, many internationally successful engineering companies, as
well as the aerospace centres (ZLR) have their premises here.
The Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau specialises
i. a. in logistics, aviation technology, aviation management, as well
as mechanical engineering and business informatics. It provides
skilled labour, relevant research results and has close links with
industry and businesses.
Many companies from the fields of aviation technology, information
and communication technology, engineering industry and life
sciences have settled in the area surrounding the SMB Science and
Technology Park and benefit from the strong community.
Regional, national and trans-European: the port
Königs Wusterhausen/Wildau
Brandenburg's largest port in Königs Wusterhausen/Wildau is a
hub combining waterway, railway and road transport, and offers the
most cost-efficient combination of all the modes of transport. It is
the central logistics hub and a good commercial location for transit
traffic from Germany to Poland, as well as along the SCANDRIA
corridor (Scandinavia-Adriatic).

Schönefeld and Wildau
Three strong
communities
The economic success of the Airport Region BER has ensured that
the municipalities could and still can direct their investment efforts
towards their communities. This benefits the schools, day-care
centres, transport infrastructure and culture. They are also looking
to provide new housing, in particular, for skilled workers. Additional
educational and recreational facilities are planned. All this takes
place in close coordination between the three municipalities.
Königs Wusterhausen:
Sustainable development in the countryside
Königs Wusterhausen is set amidst a landscape of forests, lakes
and rivers. In addition to the city's inland port, the economic
importance of Königs Wusterhausen depends on the success
of many industrial and commercial areas. In the north-western
area of the city, the 130-hectare area surrounding Funkerberg,
the birthplace of broadcasting in Germany, is being developed
and funded from own resources to expand the Technology and
Science Campus Wildau. The A10 leisure and shopping centre
is located in the neighbouring city of Wildau. Those interested in
investing in the region can expect spillover effects, as commercial
space may be expanded to Wildau and adjoining areas.
Königs Wusterhausen has very good education and health
facilities.

Schönefeld: airport region steeped in history
Schönefeld has become recognised throughout the world, mainly
thanks to the airport bearing the same name. It used to be Berlin's
third airport, next to Tegel and the now closed Tempelfhof Airport.
Schönefeld Airport is now being expanded to become the new Berlin
Brandenburg Airport (BER). The necessary development measures,
including the laying of roads, construction of cultural facilities,
modernisation of rental flats and the redevelopment of housing estates
shape the current image of the municipality. Of economic importance is
also the furnishing centre in Waltersdorf offering around 82,000 square
metres of space.
Schönefeld has also established partnerships with other cities. In 1999,
Schönefeld signed a cooperation agreement with Bayangol, a district
of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar.
Wildau: An industrial location with one hundred
years of history
Wildau can look back at over one hundred years of tradition in heavy
engineering industry, manufacturing locomotives, heavy machinery,
aircraft parts and military equipment. The leading companies currently
based here are located in the SMB Science and Technology Park and
the Berlin-Wildau Business Park. The city, which is surrounded by
nature, offers attractive shopping opportunities in one of the largest
and most modern shopping centres in Europe, named after its location
on the A10 motorway, also called Berliner Ring. With more than 4,000
students, Wildau is considered to be a city of youth. The local
day-care facilities and schools are of a high standard. Wildau is also
a city that has been promoting and encouraging sports and physical
activity for decades. All three municipalities offer a large and diverse
range of sports activities, including the Wildorado, a multifunctional
sports, fitness and wellness centre.
Attracting skilled
labour to the
location
The cooperation of the
Regional Growth Core
Schönefelder Kreuz
with the Employment
Agency Cottbus is a new
approach to securing a
supply of skilled labour.
The partners work closely
together, which allows
them to obtain information
about companies and
investors who have
openings for skilled
workers quickly and
efficiently. At the same
time, they help the job
seekers who are offered
assistance and support in
the town halls of the three
municipalities.

Combination of vibrant city life and attractive
countryside
The geographical location of the Berlin-Brandenburg region
promotes not only economic development, but also population
growth. Currently, around 5 million people live here. According to
the Brandenburg State Office for Construction and Transportation,
the population is expected to increase by more than 10 percent
by 2030. The mixture of vibrant city life and beautiful countryside
makes the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region a desirable place to
work and live.
High-quality housing is available, and new housing is being planned.
The mayors of the municipalities will be happy to assist you with
any questions you may have. The region is also family-friendly,
because schools and facilities for children have been the focus of
development and investment over a long period of time and are,
therefore, of a very high standard.
As our working life is becoming increasingly demanding, achieving
a work-life balance is all the more important. The region offers many
leisure activities; in addition to numerous city festivals, beautiful
landscapes and dense forests offer relaxation amidst nature.
The district of Dahme-Spreewald offers 2,000 km of biking trails,
2,000 km of hiking trails, 22 golf courses, over 100 horse-riding
estates, waterparks and wellness hotels. The beautiful lakes and
rivers, as well as the largest indoor waterpark in Europe, Tropical
Islands, motivate you to be more active and get moving.
Furthermore, the Airport Region BER also covers the tourist region
of Dahme-Spreewald, surrounded by lakes, rivers, canals and
forests. The uniquely beautiful landscape is criss-crossed with an
intricate network of waterways. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve,
the nearby Spreewald provides a unique habitat to countless animal
and plant species.

Playing field for your business
The Airport Region BER offers fully developed industrial and
commercial space in an attractive location with excellent transport
links. Of the total area of 450 hectares, a third is still available. With
the development of Funkerberg in Königs Wusterhausen, more
areas will be added.
