Why did my class get
cancelled?
We are often asked why a class
is cancelled and sometimes it
is because an instructor cannot
run the class, or there are no
opportunities to reschedule after a weather event. But
most classes are cancelled because of low enrollment.
Enrichment classes are self-supporting. This means
each class must create enough revenue to cover all
costs. Therefore, when enrollment is low, we need to
cancel, most often the week before a class is scheduled
to start.
Don’t delay, sign-up today!
By phone, mail or on the web!

Understanding Sensory Processing
Jane Lissner
Sensory processing (or sensory integration) is the way our
bodies take in information from the environment and interprets
it so we can function in the world. Sensory processing disorder is
a term that describes a condition in which the sensory information
is not organized so the brain cannot understand it. This
miscommunication results in inappropriate motor or behavioral
responses. A person, usually a child, will have difficulty processing
and acting on the information their nervous system receives from
the body’s senses and can have challenges performing everyday
activites. Behavioral problems, anxiety, depression, clumsiness,
uncoordination and other issues may develop as a result of the
disorder. This class will demystify exactly what SPD is; explain
how the nervous system works; clarify what senses are involved;
demonstrate how it presents in children; describe the treatment
options and break down sensory diets.

Finding Purpose and Passion in the
Middle Years and Beyond
A Soul Wisdom Workshop
This class will meet at the South Berwick Library, Young
Street, South Berwick, ME.
Have you noticed that media ads are starting to show older
individuals enjoying a fulfilling life style? Do you know someone
like my eighty-eight year old friend who still works, skis and plays
tennis? Many of us may not be as agile as my friend, and at
times we may believe that our “day” has passed, but the middle
and older years can be a time to discover new purpose, renewed
dimensions of creativity and passions that satisfy the soul. It is a
real possibility that older individuals may be experiencing the
wisest and most fulfilling “days” of our lives.
We will discuss and affirm the various ways that older individuals
can experience the fullness and fulfillment of living a purposeful
life. We will examine meaning gained in the context of life
experiences, past, present and going forward. Participants will
have an opportunity to experience the inner wise Soul space that
can ratify their passions, provide insights for creative fulfillment,

Adult Education is looking for Volunteers who can offer a few hours of time on a regular basis. Because our
programs are so varied, we have a wide range of opportunities available.
Tutors: We offer a variety of tutoring experiences for our community members. Some opportunities require
a regular time commitment, while others may only require a few hours.
•
Literacy Volunteers: Train and receive support as a Literacy Volunteer tutor. Our LV tutors commit to
our longer tutoring projects. You may tutor in a classroom, small group, or with an individual learner.
•
Work Skills Tutoring and/or Job Shadowing: You do not have to be a trained teacher or tutor to
improve the lives of our students. Do you know how to read blueprints? Understand how HVAC works? Know how to prep and paint a wall? We are looking for people who can share these important work and life skills with our students.
•
Retired or Stopped-Out Certified Maine Teachers: Running a Learning Lab or teaching a short-term
class will allow you to put your valuable skills to work in a flexible, creative environment with
nontraditional students.
•
Computer/Technology Tutors: We need tutors to teach all levels of computer and technology skills.
•
Classroom Support Tutors: These tutors work with an instructor in a classroom setting. With the
support of the instructor, the tutors work with students who need extra attention in the classroom.
•
ESOL tutors: If you can speak English fluently, our English Speakers of Other Languages can benefit
from having a conversation with you. Talking about current events, the meaning of common words, or
even the weather will allow the ESOL student to practice speaking in English, which is a vital part of
learning any new language.
Childcare: Some Adult Education students need care so they can attend classes, study or even sit for an
exam. We need childcare volunteers for both our day and evening sessions.
Getting the Word Out: Even though it only takes a few minutes to drop our brochures off at local
businesses, coffee shops, and gathering places in your neighborhood, it makes a huge difference in our
efforts to ‘get the word out’ to students.

and trends affecting local adult education. Kittery ACT members must live within the Kittery Schools
District. Marshwood ACT members must live within the MSAD/RSU #35 School District.
If you are interested, please fill out a contact form found on each program’s website.
