Association of the National Capital Area, the Style & Image Network and the United States Committee for UNDP would like to welcome you to Fashion Fights Poverty. There comes a time when the world’s fashion elite must do more than set style trends. There comes a time when the influence of a few must be utilized to positively impact the lives of millions. Though big-name fashion designers can be big-time benefactors, couture is not generally viewed as a humanitarian affair. The negative publicity generated by third world sweatshops and child labor abuses has underlined the idea that the fashion industry does not contribute to developing nations. This story, however, can be different. Increasingly, top brand designers are turning to alternative approaches to the creation of beautiful clothes. These range from micro-finance grants in the textiles industry to fair trade labels to eco-minded sewing cooperatives that hire the chronically disadvantaged. It is couture for a better world. In light of the new global millennium campaign to end poverty, now is the time for these new initiatives. Finally fashion is generating substantial employment opportunities and raising living standards in the developing world (much of Asia, Africa, South America). Fashion Fights Poverty is about the promotion of these initiatives, a commitment to improving international living standards via new avenues of growth in the apparel industry, and the forging of new connections between government agencies, NGOs and the fashion community. rachelpanay A Washington, D.C. native, the only child of a classical pianist mother, Rachel Panay has been honing her craft since the age of eight. Rachel continued to move in the Dance/House direction and now, “I Still Believe,” the eagerly awaited follow up to “Back to Love” entered the chart at #42 and within 2 weeks has risen to #22! Rachel has been nominated in the Best New Dance Artist category for the International Dance Music Awards. Drawing comparisons to her influences Kristine W., Amber, and Ultra Nate, Rachel is poised as a leader in the next generation of vocalists and songwriters who believe that Dance music can and should uplift, provoke thought and feeling, speak the truth, and of course make the floor move. LATOYAFOSTER As the illustrious host and producer of “Live at 5 with LaToya Foster,” Latoya Foster has used her girl-next-door characteristics, winning charm and savvy interviewing skills to attract a diverse roster of A-List guests, including the 2004 Presidential Candidates, Entertainment Mogul PDiddy, Chairs of the Democratic and Republican National Committee Howard Dean and Ken Mehlman, Virginia Governor Mark Warner, Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and a host of other prominent business and political leaders. Foster has used her voice in the community to draw attention to the national adoption crisis, violent female gangs, and to inspire more youth involvement in politics.
