About the NASL
The North American Soccer League shattered league records in 2015 and is
poised in 2016 for its most competitive year since launching its Modern Era in 2011.
Entering its sixth season of play, three new clubs were admitted to the league
for the 2016 season. Rayo OKC, backed by the local owner Sean Jones and the
Spanish La Liga club Rayo Vallecano’s Raúl Martin Presa; and Miami FC, coowned by the former star of Italy’s national team and AC Milan, Paolo Maldini
and MP & Silva’s Riccardo Silva, joins the fray for the Spring Season. The New
York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is the owner of Puerto Rico FC, which begins
play in the Fall Season.
The league has 12 clubs after the departure of the Atlanta Silverbacks and
the San Antonio Scorpions. Neither team will participate in 2016.The three
expansion sides join the Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, Fort Lauderdale
Strikers, Indy Eleven, Jacksonville Armada FC, Minnesota United FC, New York
Cosmos, Ottawa Fury FC, and Tampa Bay Rowdies.
In addition to some new, forward-thinking owners joining an already
impressive roster, there is eye-opening star power on the touchline and on the
field of play. Maldini’s longtime teammate with AC Milan and the Italian national
team, Alessandro Nesta, heads Miami FC’s inaugural campaign from the bench.
On the field, the Cosmos added the Venezuelan national team’s leader in goals
and appearances, Juan Arango. Rayo OKC signed Derek Boateng, a veteran
with Ghana’s national team, and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers acquired Matheus
Carvalho, who played recently in France for AS Monaco and appeared for that
club in the UEFA Champions League.
New York (blue) and Carolina (orange) look to continue their intense match-ups in 2016.

About the NASL
The clubs will compete under the
league’s split-season format, which
consists of 10 games in the Spring
Season (April-June) and 22 in the
Fall Season (July-October). The
winners of the Spring and Fall Seasons
earn a place in The Championship,
the league’s four-team postseason
tournament. The two clubs with the
next-best overall records receive the
remaining postseason berths. The
champion lifts the Soccer Bowl Trophy,
the third-oldest professional outdoor
soccer prize in the North America.
With a victory in front of an NASL
Modern Era attendance record for
a postseason match – 10,166 – last
November, the Cosmos lifted the Soccer
Jacksonville Armada FC
Bowl Trophy for an unprecedented
celebrating with its home fans
seventh time – across the league’s
Golden and Modern Eras. New York was able to hold on for a 3-2 win, despite
Ottawa Fury’s late surge.
The NASL’s regular-season attendance record in the Modern Era was also
broken. Jacksonville Armada FC’s inaugural home match, played at EverBank
Field, was witnessed by 16,164 spectators.
In addition to competing in league play, nine US-based clubs will play in
the 103rd edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The NASL’s two Canadian
teams – FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury FC – will participate in the Amway
Canadian Championship. Last year, the Eddies fell short of reaching the final
for the first time in club history. In 2017, Puerto Rico FC will compete in the
Caribbean Football Union Championship. The winner of each of those three
competitions earns automatic entry into the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Commissioner
Bill Peterson was named
North American Soccer League
Commissioner on Nov. 27,
2012, and has been a driving
force behind the growth of the
league.
Peterson and the NASL
added Indy Eleven and
Ottawa Fury FC for the 2014
season, after welcoming the
New York Cosmos back to the
field, in 2013, after almost
three decades in limbo. The
league has since admitted the
Jacksonville Armada FC, which
began play in 2015. In 2016,
three new teams – Rayo OKC,
Miami FC, and Puerto Rico FC
– will take the field.
Bill Peterson
Peterson is no stranger
NASL Commissioner
to North American soccer,
having served as the senior vice
president of AEG Sports and the managing director of the Home Depot Center
from 2000-06. He played a significant role in the oversight and management
of numerous MLS teams, and the development of soccer stadiums across the
United States.
Most recently, Peterson served in an advisory capacity and provided
event services to a variety of clients in Canada and the United States through
his company, Solve4. Peterson is the chairman of the USA cycling board of
Directors and a member of the USPRO Cycling board of trustees. He also served
briefly as the chief operating officer of the UFL.
He was the executive vice president of Centerplate, the North American
market leader for managing food and beverage, retail, restaurant and events
in sports facilities, convention centers, and entertainment complexes. He
spent six years working with a variety of teams, facilities, and sporting events
while senior vice president at AEG in Los Angeles. Peterson spent almost a
decade with the National Football League, rising to the position of president
of NFL Europe after a spell as the general manager of the league’s Amsterdam
Admirals.

by its member teams through the
board of governors, which consists of
a representative from each member
team. Mark Frisch, the owner of the
Jacksonville Armada FC, is the board’s

The board oversees league rules and
regulations, expansion and commercial
strategy, and the league office.
Frisch is the executive vice president
of Beaver Street Fisheries, a leading
importer, manufacturer, and distributor
of quality frozen seafood products
from the U.S. and around the world.
Mark Frisch
The company was founded in 1950 in

who was the driving force behind
professional soccer’s return to Jacksonville after a 30-year absence, became
chairman in September 2015 after a vote by board members.
Frisch also serves as the chairman of JAXUSA Partnership, the regional
economic development organization of JAX Chamber. Frisch is also on the
board of trustees at Jacksonville University, the board of directors for JAX
Chamber, is a member of the Jacksonville Civic Council, and the board

Competition Format
Rules and Regulations
Structure: The 2016 NASL
season will once again be played
under a split-season format. The
Spring and Fall Season Champions
will each host a semifinal in the
league’s four-team postseason
tournament, The Championship,
and the pair will be joined by
the next two clubs with the best
combined records. The top seed
in The Championship will be
awarded to either the Spring or
Fall Champion, depending on
which has the better combined
record in the regular season.
The third and fourth seeds
will then be determined by the
teams’ positions in the Combined
Standings. The top-seeded team
after the semifinals will host The
Championship Final. If one club
wins both season championships,
the clubs posting the second, third,
and fourth-best overall records will
enter The Championship.
Schedule: In the 2016 Spring
Season, 11 teams will play a 10game schedule, competing against
each other once. Following a break
at mid-June, the Fall Season will
kick off on July 2 and consist of
12 teams and play a 24-game –
home-and-away against each side
– schedule.
Point System: Teams will
receive three points for a win, one
point for a draw, and zero points
for a loss.
8
Referees: All referees for NASL
matches played in the United
States are nationally certified
and assigned by the Professional
Referee Organization (PRO),
while the Canadian Soccer
Association (CSA) assigns referees
for all matches played in Canada.
Puerto Rican Soccer Federation
(Federación Puertorriqueña de
Fútbol) will designate officials for
the encounters in Puerto Rico.
Game Clock: The official game
time for all NASL games will
be managed on the field by the
referee. If necessary, the referee
may also allot extra time (stoppage
time) at the end of each half – first,
second, and if applicable, first
overtime and second overtime
during postseason games. The
stadium clock will display the
time from 0:00 to 45:00 and from
45:00 to 90:00 (plus stoppage time
where applicable in each half). For
statistical purposes, the minutes
for goals, substitutions, yellow
cards, etc., will be listed from the
first minute until the 90th minute.
For example, a goal scored at 15
minutes 10 seconds will be listed
as having been scored in the 16th
minute.
Team Rosters: During the
season, each team’s master
roster shall be no less than 20
players and no more than 35 total
players. Players can compete on a
maximum of two teams per Spring
or Fall Season.
2016 NASL M edi a G ui d e
Rules and Regulations
Active Roster and Inactive
Roster: While the total roster
size can be 35 players, only 30 are
eligible to be on the active roster at
a given time. Only the players listed
on the active roster can compete
in an NASL league game. When a
player is on the inactive roster, the
player must remain inactive for
30 days. To move a player from
the active to inactive roster or vice
versa, the team must notify the
registrar, in writing, at least 48
hours before the league game to
reflect the changes.
Domestic Players: Domestic
players for teams located in the
United States are a U.S. citizens,
a permanent resident (green card
holder) or the holder of other
special status (e.g., refugee or
asylum status). Domestic players
for teams located in Canada are
Canadian citizens, permanent
resident, landed immigrant (nonCanadian citizen permanent
residents) or players who qualify
as a domestic player in the United
States.
International Players: Each
team may list up to seven nondomestic players on its master
roster.
Game-Day Rosters: Each
team may nominate 18 players
from its active roster for a gameday roster. Teams are allowed three
substitutions per game.
Cautions and Suspensions:
A player will be suspended for
one game upon receiving a
fifth accumulated yellow card
throughout the Spring or Fall
Seasons – regardless of the nature
of the infraction. After a player
has been suspended for five yellow
cards, an additional one-game
suspension will be added each time
after another three yellow cards are
accumulated. A player receiving
two yellow cards in the same game
will receive a red card and will
be suspended for the next game.
However, that will only count as
one red card and not two yellow
cards added to the accumulation
total. A player that receives a direct
red card will automatically be
suspended for the next game, and
the NASL Disciplinary Committee
has the power to suspend him for
additional games, depending upon
the severity of the red-card offense.
Card Suspensions: Red-card
and yellow-card accumulation
suspensions earned in regular
season games will be served in
that player’s next regular-season
game. Any suspension for yellowcard accumulation earned in a
player’s last regular season game
will carry over into that season’s
first postseason game for his team.
Any player who receives a redcard in his team’s last game of the
season - NASL regular season or
during postseason - will serve the
one-game suspension during their
next game (whether it comes in The
2016 NASL M edi a G u i d e
9
Rules and Regulations
Championship Semifinals, Final, or
in the first regular-season game of the
next season). All card suspensions will,
if applicable, follow a player to a new
team.
3) Head-To-Head Competition:
The highest position shall be awarded
to the team with the best win/draw/
loss record in regular-season games
against all other teams equal in points.
Suspension Manipulation:
4) Away Goal Difference/Away
Goals Scored: The highest position
shall be awarded to the team with the
greater away goal differential than the
other teams. If needed, the highest
position shall be awarded to the team
with the greater total of away goals
scored.
Players suspended from NASL regular
season or postseason games that
are called in for national team duty
will have their suspensions held in
abeyance until they return to their
NASL team. Teams will be responsible
for informing the league office of a
player’s selection to national team
duty. Failure to provide the League
Office with such notice or to withhold
the use of a suspended player when
appropriate is subject to sanctions.
Soccer Bowl Trophy: The winner
of The Championship Final will be the
league champion and receive the NASL
Soccer Bowl Trophy.
League Standings: The team
awarded the highest position in the
league standings will be the team with
the greatest number of points at the
conclusion of the respective Spring or
Fall Season. In the event that two or
more teams have an equal number of
points, the following system will be
used to determine their rank in the
league standings:
1) Goal Differential: The highest
position shall be awarded to the team
with the greater goal difference against
all other teams during the regular
season.
2) Total Goals: The highest position
shall be awarded to the team scoring
the greatest number of total goals
against all other teams during the
regular season.

2016 NASL Outlook
Last year ended in storybook fashion in the North American Soccer League.
The New York Cosmos saw off into retirement the Spanish stars Raúl and Marcos
Senna with one more title, hoisting the Soccer Bowl Trophy in November.
In 2016, each NASL team has one objective: Dethroning the defending
champions.
“2016 is shaping up to be our best year ever,” NASL Commissioner Bill
Peterson said. “Both on and off the field we’ve seen significant development and
improvements being made across the league.”
FC Edmonton’s Eddie Edward (white) makes sliding tackle vs New York Cosmos (green).
NASL clubs have scoured the soccer world for the best talent. Several highprofile internationals have joined the league, bringing with them experience in
the biggest club and international tournaments.
The Cosmos defeated Ottawa Fury FC, 3-2, in The Championship Final,
winning the club’s second title in three seasons. New York has retooled in
the offseason with the signings of the Venezuelans Yohandry Orozco and
that nation’s leader in appearances and goals, Juan Arango, among other
international signings.
“We are very excited about the 2016 season,” Cosmos Coach Giovanni
Savarese said. “We did a lot of work last year to secure our core team for this
12

2016 NASL Outlook
campaign and we have also made some great new additions. The hunger within
the team to win another championship is huge and we’re looking forward to
getting the season underway.”
The NASL, which has three new teams (Rayo OKC, Miami FC, and Puerto
Rico FC) in 2016, has also added well-known players, including Derek Boateng
(Ghana/Rayo OKC) and Wilson Palacios (Honduras/Miami FC).
“We want to go out and put a product on the field that the fans are proud of
and can get behind,” Rayo OKC Coach Alen Marcina said. “The short-term goals
are to make sure the style of play we want to implement the guys buy into, and
if we can exhibit that to the fans and the league, we’ll deem that as a success and
results will come.”
Two expansion teams – Rayo OKC and Miami FC – will strive for a fast start
in the Spring Season. Puerto Rico begins play in the Fall Season.
Alessandro Nesta, Coach of Miami FC, said: “The NASL is a tough league
with some competitive teams, but I am confident in what we are building here in
Miami FC. My team will be ready and competing for the NASL Championship.
We are determined to make a statement in our inaugural year.”
Professional soccer returns to Puerto Rico in July when the club, which is
owned by the New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony, joins the fray.
“With the upcoming NASL Spring Season just around the corner it’s exciting
times for all the clubs,” Puerto Rico FC Coach Adrian Whitbread said. “Even
though we here at Puerto Rico FC won’t be starting until July, preparations are
well under way. We will be keeping a close eye on all the teams, but our focus is
on making the postseason come the end of the Fall Season.”
Fury FC, after losing to the Cosmos in The Championship Final, are looking
to build from a successful and surprising run after winning the Fall Season title.
Under the direction of Paul Dalglish, who replaces Marc Dos Santos as coach,
the club retained important veterans in goalkeeper Romuald Peiser and the
Canadian national team captain Julian de Guzman, while also adding players
with connections to the British Isles, including James Bailey and Gerardo Bruña.
“With the signings announced in the NASL the standard of the league
will be taking a step up in 2016,” Dalglish said. “It is an exciting time for the
league and we plan to improve on our success of last season and compete for a
championship.”

2016 NASL Outlook
Minnesota United has reached The Championship Semifinals in two
successive seasons, but has come up short of reaching the final both times.
The Loons, who had the league’s most-potent offense last year, have added
firepower for 2016. Stefano Pinho, the 2015 Golden Boot and Golden Ball winner,
swapped the sun of Fort Lauderdale for the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Lance Laing,
a Jamaican international and dangerous attacking threat on the left, also signed
with Minnesota in the offseason from FC Edmonton.
Christian Ramirez is back for another NASL season with Minnesota United FC
“We certainly have the firepower to achieve what we’re trying to achieve:
winning a championship,” said Carl Craig, who takes over from Manny Lagos
as Minnesota’s Coach. Lagos moved to the front office as the club’s sporting
director.
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers are another side that has reached the postseason
two straight seasons. After losing in the final in 2014, the Strikers fell to
eventual champions, the Cosmos, in the semifinals in 2015. The club has added
experienced players such as Kléberson and Aurelio Saco Vértiz, and exciting
talent like Matheus Carvalho, who recently played for AS Monaco in the UEFA
Champions League.
Caio Zanardi, the club’s Coach and general manager, knows that 2016 will be
competitive.
14
2016 NASL M edi a G ui d e
2016 NASL Outlook
“The level is always very strong with the Cosmos, Minnesota, and Tampa Bay”
he said. “You have Carolina and it’s always complicated to play against them,
there’s Edmonton, and Miami FC and Rayo OKC are new teams as well. All the
teams will not be easy or simple to play against.”
The Tampa Bay Rowdies narrowly missed the postseason, finishing just two
points behind the Strikers for the fourth and final spot. The club added Tom
Heinemann and quality midfielders, including Kalif Alhassan, Michael Nanchoff,
and Junior Burgos. The Rowdies also re-signed Freddy Adu.
“We’re excited to get underway as we know it will be another competitive
season,” Rowdies Coach Stuart Campbell said. “From a Rowdies perspective, we
are looking to improve based off of last season.”
The Carolina RailHawks and FC Edmonton both aim to improve on mid-table
finishes in 2015. The RailHawks embark on their first season under Steve Malik’s
ownership and have built a strong squad. The club signed defenders Paul Black
and Kareem Moses, and has added another attacking option in Brian Shriver,
who won the 2013 Golden Boot with Carolina and will call WakeMed Soccer Park
home once more.
“It will be important for us to put a strong team in the field that has a chance
to win the championship and reflect all the positive changes we have gone
through since our new owner came on board,” RailHawks Coach Colin Clarke
said.
FC Edmonton has also improved its squad. The experienced fullback Adam
Eckersley and forward Jake Keegan, who scored more than 30 goals in the past
two years in Ireland, have bolstered the squad – one that Edmonton Coach Colin
Miller believes is the best the club has put together.
“This is the most exciting group of players we have been able to assemble at
FC Edmonton and we know that the league is getting better every year and that
the teams are strengthening their squads,” he said.
In the club’s second season, Indy Eleven showed flashes of promise in 2015,
but also signs of a club still trying to find its footing. With a new coach in the
experienced Tim Hankinson, the club has been revamped with experienced
players. The veterans Jon Busch, Lovel Palmer, and several players from
Ottawa’s squad from last year – Colin Falvey, Sinisa Ubiparipovic, and Nicki
Paterson – have moved to the Circle City. The club has also held onto promising
youngsters in Dylan Mares and Duke Lacroix.

2016 NASL Outlook
“We looked at what players we had
options on from last year that we
felt were good professionals and had
gained starting level experience and
retained as many of those as we could,”
Hankinson said. “In trying to improve
the overall roster most of these players
were planned to move into support
positions, which allowed me to go out
and basically recreate a starting lineup
with new players.”
Off the field last year’s expansion
side, Jacksonville Armada FC, had
tremendous success. On the field, the
club showed the struggles that expansion
teams often face, finishing at the bottom
of the NASL’s Combined Standings.
The squad’s fortunes for the upcoming
Indy Eleven ready for 2016 campaign
campaign have been placed in the
hands of the former U.S. international
goalkeeper Tony Meola. It’s a squad that is built to win, and win now.
“The goal and I probably have the same goal all the other teams in the league
have and that’s to win a championship,” Meola said. “We know that there are a lot
of steps we have to take.
“We ended up at the bottom last year and the goal is to flip the table for us and
end up somewhere at the top. It’s going to take a lot of hard work. We’re not there
yet, but we know where we want to go.”
The NASL is poised to build from an exciting finish in 2015 in which nearly
all league clubs remained in contention for a postseason berth late in the season.
With the addition of three new clubs – and owners such as Riccardo Silva and
Paolo Maldini, Anthony, and Rayo Vallecano of Spain’s La Liga – quality extends
league-wide, from the playing field to the front office to the owners’ suites. Only
four teams qualify for The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason
tournament, which means that 2016 promises to be nothing short of a dogfight.
“The best part of 2016 will be welcoming the three new teams and new groups
of supporters in Miami, Puerto Rico, and Oklahoma City,” Commissioner Peterson
said. “All three clubs come into the NASL with globally recognized ownership
groups and will contribute increasing our already highly competitive matches. It’s
going to be so competitive on the field.”

South African Tiyi Shipalane, who shared the NASL’s assist leadership in 2015,
is back for another season with RailHawks
The Carolina RailHawks finished sixth in the Combined
Standings, and with Jacksonville, conceded the most goals (49)
last year.
To strengthen their backline, the RailHawks signed Simon
Mensing, Paul Black, Kareem Moses, and Drew Beckie, all whom
played in the league a year ago. Carolina also re-signed the
captain Connor Tobin and Kupono Low to shore up the back line.
“We’ve had great signings during the offseason with lots of
talented and strong players,” RailHawks Coach Colin Clarke
said. “Some of them are coming back to the team and have been
successful with the RailHawks in the past. We are very excited
about the team and are looking forward to the 2016 season.”

Honduran native Cristian Raudales will once again be key to Eddies midfield
FC Edmonton finished in the middle of the Combined
Standings a year ago, but there are clear signs the club is
headed toward bigger and better things in 2016.
The Eddies re-signed Sainey Nyassi and Dustin Corea,
and along with the signing of the Canadian international
Nik Ledgerwood, will have plenty of experience in the
midfield. Edmonton also added depth to its back line with
Adam Eckersley, and another goalscorer in Jake Keegan,
who scored 30 goals in all competitions over the past two
years in Ireland.
“This is the most exciting group of players we have been
able to assemble at FC Edmonton and we know that the
league is getting better every year and that the teams are
strengthening their squads,” FC Edmonton Coach Colin
Miller said.

Brazilian Victor Pagliari Giro, also known as PC, scored five goals and dished out four
assists in his inaugural NASL season with Strikers in 2015.
After reaching The Championship two years in a row, the
Fort Lauderdale Strikers are determined to get over the
hump and take home silverware in 2016.
The squad has been remade with its new coach Caio
Zanardi, who also serves as the club’s general manager,
at the helm. The Strikers added experience in attack with
Kléberson, Adrianinho, and the recent UEFA Champions
League participant Matheus Carvalho, as well as another
goalscorer in Maicon Santos.
“The level is always very strong with the Cosmos,
Minnesota, and Tampa Bay,” Zanardi said. “You have
Carolina and it’s always complicated to play against them,
there’s Edmonton and Miami FC and Rayo OKC are new
teams as well. All the teams will not be easy or simple to
play against. We need to be professional and study to be
ready for all of the teams.”

Brad Ring will once again be key in Indy’s midfield for 2016.
After an up-and-down season in 2015, Indy Eleven is set
to take a leap forward in the club’s third year in the NASL.
Under new guidance in veteran coach Tim Hankinson,
Indy Eleven bolstered the roster with experienced players.
In a serious push to make its first postseason appearance,
the club signed three members of the Ottawa Fury FC
squad that reached The Championship Final. Young and
exciting players, Dylan Mares and Duke Lacroix are back
for 2016 and both could be poised for breakout seasons.
“I think it’s a no excuses kind of lineup,” Hankinson said.
“It is not a developmental group. These are established
veteran players that, in their journeys have hoisted cups,
worn captain’s armbands and know how to win.”

Haitian international Pascal Millien, who scored six times and
led the team in assist in 2015, is back for the Armada FC in 2016.
Jacksonville Armada FC experienced growing pains on the
field in its first season, handicapped by an inability to win
a game on the road.
With a new season on the horizon, the club made
significant changes.
In came the former U.S. international Tony Meola as the
club’s new coach along with a handful of new players. The
NASL veteran Richie Ryan joined the team along with
Matt Fondy, Bryan Burke, and the West Bromwich Albion
Academy graduate Danny Barrow. While Meola was a
goalkeeper in his playing days, the Armada FC is expected
to be an attack-oriented but organized side.
“I say this all the time – I want to play in the attacking
half of the field, but not just throw people forward,” Meola
said. “I want my team to be organized, that’s what I’ve
done my whole life – organize teams from behind. If I
had to choose between attacking or defense, I’d say I’m an
attacking coach. I want my guys to be aggressive in certain
areas of the field.”

Miami FC became a reality in May 2015 when the NASL awarded
the team to the co-owners Riccardo Silva and Paolo Maldini. They have
steadily, expertly built a team capable of competing right out of the gate.
With the former Italy national team and AC Milan defender
Alessandro Nesta running the team from the bench, Miami FC has
recruited players with top-flight experience in Europe, including Wilson
Palacios, Matuzalém and Dario Cvitanich, among others. Nesta also
looks to provide a platform to develop players, signing several from the
U.S. collegiate ranks, including the twins Conner and Calvin Rezende.
“The NASL is a tough league with some competitive teams, but I am
confident in what we are building here in Miami FC,” Nesta said. “My
team will be ready and competing for the NASL championship. We are
determined to make a statement in our inaugural year.”

Christian Ramirez looks to continue his scoring spree for Minnesota in 2016.
Minnesota United FC enters 2016 after a second
successive loss in The Championship Semifinals.
The Loons have added more firepower to the league’s
most prolific attack (54 goals) from a year ago with
the additions of the 2015 Golden Boot and Golden Ball
winner Stefano Pinho and the Best XI selection Lance
Laing. Minnesota has kept the core of its team together
including Christian Ramirez, Justin Davis, and Kevin
Venegas. Where there has been change is on the touchline
as Manny Lagos moves into a full-time role as the sporting
director and Carl Craig moves up from assistant and takes
over as the squad’s coach.
“A lot of what you’ve seen with Manny was the product of
my work and vice-versa,” Craig said. “You’re not going to
see a massive shift, but we look to evolve every year and
there are a few little areas that I don’t think we were great
at last year so we’ve got to look to be more proactive.”

Carlos Mendes looks to once again lead the Cosmos’ back line into 2016.
The New York Cosmos hoisted the Soccer Bowl Trophy for the
second time in three seasons – and a seventh time dating to the
league’s Legendary Era – as the club aims to grab more silverware
in 2016. The Cosmos were crowned Spring Season Champions
and then finished first in the Combined Standings (on the second
tiebreaker).
While the Spanish national team stars Raúl and Marcos Senna
have retired, the Cosmos have retooled in strong fashion. The
Venezuelan international Juan Arango was the marquee signing
in the offseason. The club also added the Costa Rican international
Jairo Arrieta to lead the front line and added Niko Kranjcar.
The majority of last season’s key contributors has returned for
the coming campaign, led by Danny Szetela, Jimmy Maurer, and
Sebastián Guenzatti.
“We are very excited about the 2016 season,” Cosmos Coach
Giovanni Savarese said. “We did a lot of work last year to secure
our core team for this campaign and we have also made some
great new additions. The hunger within the team to win another
championship is huge and we’re looking forward to getting the
season underway.”

Canadian international captain Julian De Guzman
is set to once again lead the Fury FC in 2016.
After emerging as the surprise club of 2015, Ottawa Fury FC fell
excruciatingly shy of lifting the Soccer Bowl Trophy. Ottawa, did
however, win the club’s first piece of silverware, claiming the
Fall Season title after losing just once in the second of the split
seasons.
Changes, however, have been extensive during the offseason.
Paul Dalglish has replaced Marc Dos Santos as the new coach,
and Dalglish has had to rebuild the club’s roster.
Ottawa has retained the Canadian national team captain Julian
de Guzman and signed another Canadian international in Marcel
de Jong. Exciting young midfielder Mauro Eustaquio and the
record-setting goalkeeper Romuald Peiser (who won the league’s
Golden Glove Award) also make Ottawa a 2016 contender.
“We have had a hugely successful recruitment season and we
are fully confident we have players that have the quality and
motivation to work together with our passionate supporters to
make 2016 a memorable season in the nation’s capital,” Dalglish
said.

The club was welcomed into the NASL last June and opted to begin
play in the 2016 Fall Season. Puerto Rico FC is backed by the New York
Knicks star Carmelo Anthony, who has roots on the island, as soccer and
the NASL return to Puerto Rico for the first time in several years.
Puerto Rico FC should have a strong core of players from the Caribbean
island – the club’s first signing was the Puerto Rican international Jackie
Marrero. Returning to the tropics is the club’s coach, Adrian Whitbread,
who managed the Puerto Rico Islanders who played in the NASL in 2012.
“With the upcoming NASL Spring Season just around the corner it’s
exciting times for all the clubs,” Whitbread said. “Even though at Puerto
Rico FC we won’t be starting until July, preparations are well under way.
We will be keeping a close eye on all the teams, but our focus is on making
the postseason come the end of the Fall Season.”

Rayo OKC – a partnership between the local owner Sean Jones and
Rayo Vallecano’s Raúl Martin Presa – had to hit the ground running after
entering the league last November.
The club, though, has a title-winning coach in Alen Marcina, who led
the San Antonio Scorpions to victory in The Championship Final in 2014.
Marcina has taken familiar faces with him to Oklahoma in Billy Forbes,
Tyler Gibson, and Marvin Chávez, among others.
The club also boasts a strong mix of veterans and youth in the Ghana
international Derek Boateng and Georgios Samaras.
“We embrace the challenge and look forward to it,” Marcina said. “We
want to go out and put a product on the field that the fans are proud of and
can get behind. The short-term goals are to make sure the style of play we
want to implement the guys buy into, and if we can exhibit that to the fans
and the league, we’ll deem that as a success and results will come.”

U.S. international Freddy Adu in action for the Rowdies.
The Tampa Bay Rowdies fell agonizingly short of reaching
The Championship, finishing outside the final postseason
berth only by two points.
The Rowdies have strengthened the squad for a postseason
push in 2016, particularly in the midfield with Kalif
Alhassan, Junior Burgos, and Freddy Adu, who was resigned. The club also added Tom Heinemann, who scored
four goals last postseason, and was a driving force behind
Ottawa Fury FC’s run to The Championship Final.
“We’re excited to get underway as we know it will be another
competitive season,” Rowdies Coach Stuart Campbell said.
“From a Rowdies perspective, we are looking to improve
based off of last season.”

Media Guidelines & Regulations
NASL PR staff members and team PR staff members must ensure that all working
conditions are harmonious and a balance is struck between the needs of the
media (as representatives of the fans and the public) and the needs of the clubs. It
is the duty of the team PR staff members to adhere to the following guidelines:
Game Notes: Teams will provide games notes to media members on the day of
a match.
Media Credentials: All teams must print and distribute media credentials
to all designated media members who will be working within the grounds of
the host stadium. Each team should print both single-game or season-long
media credentials. Photographers and/or videographers must be attached to a
legitimate media organization to acquire credentials. All Teams must provide
colored bibs for still photographers and TV broadcast crew members. The two
groups should be wearing different colored bibs that are designated by each team.
Press Box: The press box area is a neutral zone. Both home and visiting team
personnel and media shall refrain from yelling or cheering. Media must not wear
team apparel in the press box and are reminded to remain neutral when in areas
made accessible by their credential. Media must not consume alcohol while in
possession of a media credential and may not request autographs. Violators
may be asked to leave the press box area and/or have their credential privileges
suspended or revoked.
Locker Rooms: Team locker rooms will not be open to media members
at any time before, during, and after every match – unless a club has received
specific clearance from the league office to open them. The home and away team
training/treatment areas and referee locker rooms are also strictly off limits to
all members of the media. All regulations regarding media access to the locker
rooms should be clearly communicated to team staff and security personnel to
ensure a secure environment. TV broadcast crew members may film inside the
locker rooms prior to the team’s arrival, but only after coordinating with home
team and visiting team PR staff.
Stadium Access: Credentialed media members will have access to the
stadium, professional workrooms, stadium seating, and postgame media
activities. During the match, all credentialed media will have access to the
press box, which will be regulated by home team PR members. In addition, all
accredited media members should be given a seat in the press box if possible.
Traveling Media: The home team shall provide press box seating for
traveling media members at each game and should keep in mind the needs of
media members traveling from the visiting team’s area.

closed session, teams must allow media a minimum of 15 minutes for interviews
after practice.
Home Team PR Staff Responsibilities: The home team PR staff must
be in attendance on game day to attend to working media members before,
during, and after the match. For a full list of responsibilities, please refer to the
Media Operations Checklist.
Statistics Crew: Statistical information such as boxscore and updated league
standings, etc., in the press box or in a location with good view of the match.
Still Photography: Still photographers, with the proper bib, are permitted
to shoot matches in areas specifically designated by the home team. If a home
and/or visiting team PR staff has a specific team photographer at the match,
then those individuals will wear a different color bib to indicate that they can be
granted special access to any stadium level as long they do not obstruct the view
of spectators, security personnel, medical officials, and emergency exits. At no
time are photographers allowed on the field of play.
Interview Area: The home team PR director will designate a suitable
postgame interview area on or near the field of play. This area shall be equipped
with a team/sponsor backdrop to create a ‘coaches TV area’ where interviews may
be conducted. Home and visiting team PR staff are responsible for bringing their
own coach and players to the Coaches TV Area upon the conclusion of the game.
Player Interviews: Players giving interviews who should have played a
significant role in the outcome of the match will be selected at the PR director’s
discretion. Media may request a specific player, and the team PR directors will
dictate the length of the interview. Additional postgame interviews for coaches
and players can be done in the designated media mixed zone area, which is
between the locker room and the team buses at the venue.
Official Interviews: The NASL Commissioner and team owners may be
made available for interviews to media at the discretion of the home and visiting
PR directors and after consultation with the league’s communication staff. Game
officials will not be available for interviews and the official’s locker room remains
off limits to all media.

US Soccer Federation
United States Soccer Federation - Founded 1913
FIFA Affiliated 1914; CONCACAF Affiliated 1961
As the governing body of soccer in all forms and at all levels in the United
States, U.S. Soccer has played an integral role in charting the course for the sport
for more than 100 years. In that time, the federation’s mission statement has
been clear and simple: To make soccer, in all its forms, a preeminent sport in the
United States and to continue the development of soccer at all recreational and
competitive levels.
In 1989, the U.S. men’s national team had not played in a World Cup in almost
40 years and the U.S. women’s program was in its early stages. U.S. Soccer was
hosting games in small stadiums it could not fill, few matches were televised,
soccer stadiums were not even in the blueprint stage, and there were no highlevel professional outdoor leagues. Since that time, the state of soccer in the U.S.
has been transformed.
In Brazil in 2014, the men’s national team competed in its seventh consecutive
FIFA World Cup. The team progressed to the Round of 16 for the second straight
tournament.
U.S. Soccer is a world leader at every level of the women’s game. The American
women have won three FIFA Women’s World Cups (1991, 1999 and 2015) and
four Olympic gold medals (1996, 2004, 2008 and 2012) – an accomplishment
unmatched, men or women, in Olympic competition. The United States has also
hosted three wildly successful World Cups (men in 1994; women in 1999 and
2003) with the support of its members and anchored by strong organizational
abilities.
U.S. Soccer continues to support the development of referees in CONCACAF,
with a reinvigorated focus on education and training, including the care and
nurturing of professional referees. In 2012, the Professional Referee Organization
was created to manage the referee programs and to increase the quality of
younger officials in professional leagues in the U.S. and Canada. The top referees
are considered for FIFA competitions.

U.S. Open Cup
NASL teams have competed in the
Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup since 2012,
having sent teams to the quarterfinals in
two separate years.
After four seasons of competing, NASL
teams have outscored their opposition
98-91 in 59 games, while posting a
27W-5D-27L record, including 14
shutouts.
The Carolina RailHawks have had the
most success, reaching the quarterfinals
in 2013 and 2014. Brian Shriver, who
recently returned to the RailHawks ahead
of the 2016 Spring Season, leads all NASL
NY Cosmos defeated NYCFC on penalites players in goals in the competition with
six. The Atlanta Silverbacks also reached
during 2015 Open Cup
the quarterfinals in 2014.
The Cup has helped to foster rivalries for NASL teams, regardless of league
affiliation. The RailHawks knocked out the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS three
years in a row from 2012-14. The New York Cosmos have ousted a New York
metropolitan area MLS side in back-to-back years. Last year the Cosmos defeated
New York City FC of MLS in a penalty-kick shootout before 11,446 at Shuart
Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y., the biggest turnout involving an NASL team in the
tournament.
Played annually since 1914, the Open Cup (a single-elimination tournament
open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams) is the oldest cup
competition in the United States. The Open Cup winner qualifies as one of the
four U.S. teams for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Canadian Championship
FC Edmonton first entered the competition in 2011 and was joined by Ottawa
Fury FC in 2014. The NASL sides compete against three MLS teams – Vancouver
Whitecaps FC, Montreal Impact, and Toronto FC – for the right to be the
champion of Canada.
The Eddies have come closest to reaching the final in recent years, but have
fallen just short in the past two years after conceding late goals to the Impact
(2014) and Whitecaps (2015). The Eddies’ Tomi Ameobi is currently the top
scorer in the competition with five goals.
The Amway Canadian Championship has been held annually since 2008 and
the winner of the competition qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League.

CONCACAF
Confederation Of North, Central America
and Caribbean Association Football
Founded: 1940
FIFA Affiliated: 1940
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association
Football (CONCACAF) is the sport’s governing body in the region, and one of
six continental confederations that administer the sport along with FIFA, the
world governing body. It has 41 member associations through offices located in
Miami, New York, Guatemala City, and the Cayman Islands, and is composed
of a Congress, Executive Committee, General Secretariat, and several other
committees.
CONCACAF – formed in 1961 from the merger of the Football Confederation
of Central America and the Caribbean (CCCF) and the North American Football
Confederation (NAFC) – consists of three sub-regions: North America (three
countries), Central America (seven countries under the regional entity Unión
Centroamericana de Fútbol - UNCAF), and the Caribbean (31 countries under the
regional entity Caribbean Football Union - CFU).
At the CONCACAF Ordinary Congress held on April 19, 2013, in Panama City,
Panama, five national associations that previously held associate member status
– French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Martin, and St. Maarten – became
full members. The island of Bonaire was accepted by the Congress as an associate
member.
As the administrative body for the region, CONCACAF manages competitions,
offers technical and administrative training courses, while also actively
promoting and developing the game.
The biennial Gold Cup for full national teams and the annual Scotiabank
Champions League for club teams are CONCACAF’s most visible competitions.
The confederation organizes championships at the U-17 and U-20 levels for
men and women that lead to direct qualification for FIFA competitions. It also
supports FIFA in coordinating qualifying tournaments for the World Cup, the
Women’s World Cup and Olympic Games, and also the Beach Soccer and Futsal
World Cups.

2015 NASL Internationals
Ottawa Fury’ FC’s Julian DeGuzman once again captained Canada’s MNT in 2015
In 2015, 18 NASL players had the honor of representing their national teams
in international play around the world.
Ten of the league’s 11 teams sent players to 10 different countries to
participate in World Cup qualifying matches and regional tournaments, such as
the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, and Copa América.
The Jamaican international Lance Laing played in Copa América (the
first Caribbean nation to compete in the tournament) and also played during
Jamaica’s surprising run to the Gold Cup final. It was a year to remember for
Ottawa’s Julian de Guzman, who broke Canada’s career appearance mark when
he earned his 85th cap during a 0-0 draw with El Salvador in a World Cup Qualifier.

The Championship History
Legendary Era
After the creation of the North American Soccer League in 1968, the league’s
championship games were known as the NASL Final until 1974.
The Atlanta Chiefs, Dallas Tornado, Los Angeles Aztecs, New York
Cosmos, Philadelphia Atoms, and Rochester Lancers were crowned
champions after winning the NASL Final (in either a single game,
home-and-away playoff, or best-of-three series). The exception was
in 1969 when no championship game was played and the Kansas City
Spurs were crowned the league winners, after amassing the most points in the
regular season.
The NASL also recognized two champions in 1967: the Oakland Clippers of the
NPSL and the Los Angeles Wolves of the USA, before they merged into the NASL.
Soccer Bowl
The NASL Soccer Bowl began
in 1975, when Commissioner Phil
Woosnam conceived a week-long,
neutral-site championship, similar
to the NFL’s Super Bowl.
Unlike the Super Bowl, Soccer
Bowl was not denoted by Roman
numerals; instead the last digits
of the year were used (for example
Soccer Bowl ’75).
Tampa Bay Rowdies lifted their first
Soccer Bowl Trophy in 1975.
In 1984, the league changed the
neutral-site format to a best-ofthree series played at each team’s
home field. That year the event
was promoted as the Soccer Bowl
Series ’84, though it was still
generally acknowledged as the
Soccer Bowl.
The Tampa Bay Rowdies were the first team to lift the Soccer Bowl Trophy,
in 1975, when they defeated the Portland Timbers, 2-0, at San Jose’s Spartan
Stadium.
Former Portugal international striker Eusébio led the Toronto Metros-Croatia
to the NASL title in 1976, becoming the first team from Canada to win the trophy.
The next year, Brazilian forward and three-time World Cup winner Pelé concluded
his playing career by leading the New York Cosmos to their first Soccer Bowl title
2016 NASL M edi a G u i d e
111
The Championship History
by posting a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders at Portland’s Civic Stadium.
In 1978, a record crowd of 74,091 was on hand at Giants Stadium in East
Rutherford, N.J., as the Cosmos topped the Rowdies, 3-1, to win Soccer Bowl ’78.
Giants Stadium again staged the Soccer Bowl in 1979, when the Vancouver
Whitecaps became the second Canadian team to win the NASL title, defeating the
Rowdies, 2-1.
The Cosmos regained the title in 1980, blanking the Fort Lauderdale Strikers,
3-0, at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington.
After losing the 1981 title to the Chicago Sting at Toronto’s Exhibition Stadium,
the Cosmos captured their fourth Soccer Bowl, and the club’s fifth NASL
Championship, in 1982 with a 1-0 shutout of the Seattle Sounders in San Diego.
Vancouver became the second Canadian city to stage the Soccer Bowl as the
Tulsa Roughnecks topped the Toronto Blizzard, 2-0, at BC Place in 1983.
The next year, Soccer Bowl was a best-of-three series as the Sting won their
second league title, sweeping the Blizzard in two matches, first at Chicago’s
Comiskey Park and then at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, to capture the 1984 title.
Modern Era
With the launch of the new NASL and the
start of play in 2011, the NSC Minnesota
Stars (now Minnesota United FC) and
then the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2012
were the first champions of the league’s
Modern Era playing a two-leg series.
Minnesota defeated the Fort Lauderdale
Strikers in 2011 and then lost to the
Rowdies in a penalty-kick shootout the
next year.
In 2013, the format shifted to a singlegame NASL Final (for the first time since
1983) between the winners of the Spring
Season (New York Cosmos) and the Fall
Season (Atlanta Silverbacks). New York
captured its sixth championship, 1-0, on
a free kick by the Spanish star Marcos
Senna.
Cosmos’ captured league-best third (in modern
era) NASL Championship in 2015 and seventh

The Championship History
The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason tournament, was
introduced in 2014. The winners of the Spring Season (Minnesota) and the Fall
Season (San Antonio), plus the two teams (New York and Fort Lauderdale) with
the next-best point totals in the Combined Standings also advanced. After the
Cosmos and Loons were eliminated, the host San Antonio captured their first
NASL Soccer Bowl Trophy, defeating the Strikers, 2-1, at Toyota Field in The
Championship Final.
In 2015, the Cosmos again reigned over the NASL, defeating Ottawa Fury
FC, 3-2, in the league’s final. New York, the Spring Season Champion, defeated
the Strikers in The Championship Semifinals. Ottawa, the Fall Season winners,
ousted Minnesota United, 2-1, in extra time to advance. The Championship Final
was played before a Modern Era record crowd of 10,166 at Shuart Stadium in
Hempstead, N.Y. The Soccer Bowl Trophy is the third-oldest professional soccer
prize in the United States.
