ANOTHER QUALITY MUSHROOM PATCH™ PRODUCT
The Shaggy Mane
Mushroom Patch™
Coprinus comatus
Enclosed with these instructions is a bag of sterilized sawdust
fully colonized with pure mushroom mycelium of the Shaggy
Mane mushroom, Coprinus comatus. This particular strain
came from wild specimens collected on Orcas Island in the
San Juan Islands of Washington State in 1982. It is also the
strain featured on the cover of The Mushroom Cultivator.
Habitat
The Shaggy Mane Mushroom Patch™ can be grown in
a wide variety of composted materials, making it an ideal
companion for gardeners. Several types of habitats can
be composed. The best composts are ones rich in partially
decomposed organic debris (vegetable wastes, straw, manure
or rich soil). To inoculate your mushroom bed, simply open
the bag of spawn and mix it thoroughly into the compost pile.
One bag of spawn can inoculate up to a cubic yard of material.
Inoculating less than a cubic yard of compost only means that
colonization will be faster. After thoroughly mixing, spread
the compost to a depth of 6–12 inches in a shady location.
As time passes, another compost pile can be laid adjacent to
your incubating Shaggy Mane bed. The mycelium from the
original bed will invade the other, increasing the likelihood of
“satellite” colonies of Shaggy Manes.
to locate your Shaggy Mane bed near your garden, as overspray from garden watering systems will make extra watering
unnecessary. This method of cultivation will take up to a
year to produce mushrooms. Your bed will begin to produce
mushrooms when temperatures fall into the 45–65 ˚F range.
For in-depth descriptions of the techniques for both indoor
and outdoor Shaggy Mane cultivation, please consult the
books Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms and
The Mushroom Cultivator. Both of these books are available
through Fungi Perfecti.
Preparation and Consumption
Shaggy Manes are best eaten before the gills turn black and
begin to dissolve. (These mushrooms are also commonly
known as Inky Caps.) Younger specimens have better flavor
overall. These mushrooms are delicious sautéed over a high
heat in a frying pan or wok with a little olive oil, adding a
little tamari just before browning. The mushrooms can then
be mixed into an omelet or served directly on toast.
Note: Never eat any mushroom unless you have positively
identified it. Do not consume alcohol before, during or
directly after eating any mushroom new to you; the
combination of alcohol and an unfamiliar mushroom may
cause gastric upset in some cases.
Thank you for purchasing our product! We wish you luck in
your future fungal endeavors.
The Folks at
Fruiting
Three months after inoculation, the Shaggy Mane bed
should be watered 3 times a week. If timed to coincide with
the onset of natural rains, the need for additional watering
will be minimized. If circumstances allow, it is a good idea
