ARTbeat Benefit Gala Brick House Funk presented 2014 by Kirkland Arts Center October 24th, 2015 From the Executive Director I would like to personally welcome you to Kirkland Arts Center’s 7th Annual ARTbeat Benefit, Brick House Funk. Tonight we will take a look back at the art, music, and vibes of the 1970s Funk era. This revolutionary time broke the rules and birthed a new line of tunes for moving and grooving, embodied by Motown and Disco icons like James Brown, ABBA, John Travolta, and Michael Jackson. We hope you enjoy ARTbeat’s dynamic artwork featuring over 40 outstanding artists, available for the bidding in tonight’s live and silent auctions. Don’t forget to stop by our interactive ARTbeat installation, a special tribute to KAC’s historic Brick House, the Peter Kirk Building. By making a purchase at the auction or by contributing during the Fund-A-Need, you are playing a direct role in ensuring that the Kirkland Arts Center continues to provide exemplary visual arts programming to aspiring and talented artists in our community. Additionally, a portion of the funds will help preserve one of the oldest and most important historic buildings in Kirkland where the founder of this city established his offices in 1892, the Peter Kirk Building. I would also like to offer my sincerest gratitude for the dedication and support of so many who make this auction possible- the generous donating Artists, Businesses & Individuals; the Angels and the Art Committee; the Board of Directors and Advisory Council; the Volunteers; the Staff; and you, for your continued support and participation. Somers embraces the blending of opposites, which can be seen in the contrasts—hard/soft, 2D/3D, light/dark, permanence/transience, etc.—he captures in his work. The surface of his clay box is reminiscent of Chou dynasty bronze cooking and ceremonial vessels, and its form suggests the deconstruction of posttechnology buildings. Somers constructed the piece out of wet stoneware, slammed it together with abandon and then fired it in the raku process, creating a work that is nearly the polar opposite of Brian’s wheel-thrown, high temperature, porcelain clay, functional, handless cups. 2 You’re the One by Michael Dickter Pastel and resin on paper mounted on board 15” x 24” DONOR: Michael Dickter VALUE: $1,400 Birds, flowers, and animals all talk to Michael Dickter of our shared experiences: connection and isolation, love and loss, permanence and impermanence. He paints to tell a story of the beauty of loss and hope. With marks and drips, with paint and pencil, and through a series of small decisions and struggles, a painting is made. That exquisite and fleeting moment of creation. A story told. This is a pastel piece featuring a bird (waxwing) and a flower (iris). The resin over the pastel makes the piece permanent, but at the same time alters the pastel and stains the paper. 9 3A FOOD FRENZY: JAPANESE DINNER DONOR : VALUE: Satomi and Dave Pellerin, Pat Colyar $750 LIVE You and six friends will partake in an expertly created Japanese Izakaya style dinner at the home of KAC Ceramicist Satomi and husband Dave Pellerin. She is influenced by the shapes of natural structures as varied as pods, spines, pollen, DNA strands, sea urchins, cellular structures, blooms, bones, and husks. Her paintings incorporate a tendency to abstract organic forms, and in doing so, emphasize the direct correlation between subject matter and materials, as pure bee’s wax, resin and pigments are heated, layered and fused with a torch. Each painting grows naturally through the process of layering, decision making, eliminating, receding, assessing and at some point, knowing when to walk away. 5 Portland Arts & Culture Escape DONOR: The VALUE: Benson Hotel, Susan Thurston $1,000 Experience the arts and culture of Portland - as you and a guest enjoy a 2 night stay at one of Portland’s finest establishments, the beautiful historic Benson Hotel. He paints the beauty of nature and our humanity. Painting allows him to explore emotions with visual imagery; he creates images to convey mood and depth. Boatright has developed his own unique technique and style, producing vibrant luminescent colors with raw ingredients. He inlays gold, copper, silver, and variegated metals, and adds metallic and luminescent powder and glass beads to produce an interaction with light. It is a process, an evolution; he paints and the painting reacts. It is controlled and uncontrolled, raw and refined. His style is emerging and gaining momentum. 7 Brick House Funk by Ken Turner Ceramic 11.25” x 10” x 13” DONOR: Ken Turner VALUE: $750 “Brick House Funk” takes the viewer in another direction provoking their imagination. The figures in her paintings are lost and found within richly textured layers of atmospheric color. Thick impasto and gestural brushstrokes are created and destroyed by scratching and scraping to emphasize ambiguity. “Funkadelic Relic” is a low-relief, sculptural painting depicting a funky disco queen “embodied” within a faux brick wall created from plaster. Without dedicated places for art and opportunities to create, Kirkland’s excellence in technology would not be our reality today. Creative thinking informs our best leaders and inspires solutions to our greatest challenges. You are invited to listen to a local artist and community member, Anna Macrae, share what Kirkland Arts Center has meant to her. Anna discovered KAC to be much more than a local arts school and gallery: an inspirational place to begin her art career. KAC is a community: a special place where arts students, instructors, community members, working artists, and arts patrons gather to create, learn, and connect with art. KAC’s education program revenue makes up only 60% of the funds necessary to keep Kirkland Arts Center alive and thriving. In order to remain a vibrant artistic center for the community, KAC needs your support. Your contribution tonight will help KAC: • Offer affordable and engaging visual arts classes • Bring exhibitions & artistic outreach opportunities to Kirkland and beyond • Give scholarships to youth, adults, and teens in need • Preserve one of the oldest & most important historic buildings in Kirkland. Our Mission. Kirkland Arts Center promotes artistic mastery and community participation in the visual arts through innovative educational programming, contemporary exhibitions, and dynamic events while providing stewardship of the historic Peter Kirk Building. She was chosen to represent Washington State with a year-long solo show at the Governor’s Mansion in Olympia in 2012, has had work featured in the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, and has work in the permanent collections at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland and the Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island. 23 22 LIVE Tic Tac Toe & Away We Go! by Donna Porter Acrylic on Canvas 36” x 36” DONOR: Todd Houle VALUE: $1,500 Donna Lindeman Porter is a traveling artist, curator, designer, and teacher who has been painting, drawing, and creating most of her life. Life’s textures, colors, animals, imagination, travel, exaggeration, and laughter enrich her work. Donna is a process artist who allows her materials and shapes to tickle her fancy and many times turn a different corner on her creative path. Like Br’er Rabbit, her nest is now an art studio, not her past corporate life. This painting is multilayered, with hidden large and small creatures that evoke joy and mystery. 23 KAC Board Wine Cellar DONOR: KAC Board of Directors VALUE: $1,000 Fill your wine cellar with a selection of fine wines hand picked by Kirkland Arts Center’s Board of Directors. Over the past several years, she collected oral histories from Chinese and Chinese Americans, using those histories as a point of departure for her paintings and prints. The piece entitled “Forbidden City” (painted with acrylic on board) refers to the Chinese nightclub in San Francisco during the 1930s to late 1950s. Catering primarily to a Caucasian audience, for the first time in the US, Chinese Americans showed off their talents for singing and dancing.. 25 Boat Cruise and Dinner for 8 Aboard the Stella Maris DONOR: T.J. and Carole Woosley VALUE: $1,800 Enjoy a private cruise for eight aboard Stella Maris, a 44’ classic-style trawler yacht as guests of KAC supporters Carole and T.J.
