Box 1207 Sidney, MT 59270 Volume 34 • Number 15 Family Tries To Raise Funds To Help Boy Gain Sight Through Operation In China Konnor Konnor with his parents. A spaghetti supper along with an auction will be held at the Assembly of God Church Event Center in Sidney June 7, from 5-8 p.m. to help with medical costs for Konnor Rose. Konnor John William Rose was born in Bozeman, MT, the son of Colin and Kassi (Kilsdonk) Rose, in the fall of 2003. Aside from a moderately severe club foot, the doctor pronounced him healthy. Six weeks later, at a routine visit for a suspected ear infection, Konnor’s blindness was detected. After several tests and visits to specialists, Konner’s condition had a name: Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) and Septic Optic Dysplasia (SOD). Konnor’s optic nerves were only 10% of the normal size and he was missing the septum (dividing membrane between two sides of his brain). In addition, his pituitary gland, although present, is not fully functional. Konnor, along with his parents, live in Missouri, residing close to medical specialists, a team familiar with Konnor’s condition. Konnor is 4 years old now, and has never understood he has a disability. His dad helps him ride a skateboard, and he finds mischief around the next corner- just as most growing children do. He is prone to seizures and has also been diagnosed with water-diabetes. Konnor’s body is not growing at a normal rate and he needs growth hormone— but because of costs, the Rose family can’t afford the daily injections. But nothing really slows this little guy down. Just think what life would be like if Konnor were to have vision! Today, there is a chance of a sight treatment in China in which adult stem cells are transfused into the child’s spinal fluid. As of November 2007, four American children with the same diagnosis as Konnor have been successfully treated, one of which is Ryley. Ryley lives only a short distance from Nixa, a small community in Missouri where Konnor resides. Ryley was given the procedure, and was able to gain vision Hill To Perform At Fort Peck Summer Theatre By Sheri Wyss Local Sidney Middle School student, Tori Hill, will be performing at the Fort Peck Summer Theater in the “Seussical” from June 13-29. Tori, a soon-to-be 7th grader, and daughter of Doug and Jill Hill, Sidney, was selected for the roles of “Jungle Creature”, “Circus Performer” and “Fish” in the musical based on the works of Dr. Suess after auditioning in Glasgow this spring. To some, performing a one-minute song and a one-minute monologue to audition for a play may seem daunting, but not to Tori who says, “Being in the play is fun and I get to see friends from other towns.” Of course, Tori is not a stranger to the world of performing arts, she was cast as the role of Tom Sawyer in “Plains Tales” at Foot- lights & Greasepaint summer camp and has also performed in many school plays. Tori says, “Acting is a lot of fun but you have to work at it, you can’t expect to be good right away.” Tori has been following her advice since she was cast in the Suessical. She rehearses around 3½ hours a day, sometimes longer in preparation for the upcoming musical, but insists that rehearsals are always fun. When asked what is her favorite role in the play Tori responded “The Jungle Creature”, because the costumes are really fun. You should go see it.” Showtimes for the “Seussical” are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 4 p.m. Sunday. For tickets contact the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce at 406-228-2222 or the Theater Box Office at 406-526-9943. Tori Hill only eight days after treatment. Weeks later, Ryley was able to see her mother’s face for the first time. Konnor’s parents and Ryley’s parents have been in contact, and today the plan is to get to China. A total estimate for the procedure is $200,000 (all having to take place in China with both American and other physicians). Funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be used to offset medical costs. An account has been set up at Stockman Bank in Sidney. For those that wish to help out financially, ask for the Rose family account which your contribution will go into. The wish is that some day very soon, Konnor will give up his white cane. ABC’s 20/20 TV broadcast staff has notified Kassi, and has asked the Rose family to appear with Konnor and has also contacted Ryley and her parents to be on an upcoming segment. The date has not been set as of yet. Kassi graduated from Sidney High School in 2002, and is the daughter of Pastor Rod and Lisa Kilsdonk, Baker, formerly of Sidney, and granddaughter of Bill and Sonja Barber and Rod and Diane Kilsdonk, Sidney. For more information or to help Konnor and his family, call Konnor’s great grandmothers Diane Kilsdonk at 406-798-3357 or Sonja Barber 406-488-4228. Pictured above are back row (L to R) Good Cents Store Manager Carla Houchen, volunteers Betty Risinger and Gretchen Stotts. Front row (L to R) Lois Wiedmer and Regina Schwindt. The Good Cents Store is excited to be celebrating its 20th Anniversary this week. In honor of their anniversary, Good Cents is hosting customer and donor appreciation days including a storewide sale, daily door prizes and refreshments. The Good Cents Store is a second-hand retail store that is staffed by volunteers and managed by Sidney Health Center. In 1988, Bev Siddoway, a registered nurse, and Marie Hamburg put their heads together to come up with a plan to raise money for equipment at the hospital. They came up with the idea of holding a garage sale every weekend in Marie’s garage and the Good Cents Store was started. The following year, the operation moved into a building on West Holly and was staffed by 25 volunteers and managed by Susanne Moore. Betsy Knapp became the second manager of the store followed by Sue Rootes. The Good Cents Store moved to its current location at the end of East Main in 2004 just before Sue retired. Currently, there are 27 active volunteers who work with the volunteer director, Carla Houchen. Rick Haraldson, Sidney Health Center CEO, stated, “It’s wonderful to have such dedicated volunteers in the community who donate their time and efforts to this program. The Good Cents Store continues to thrive due to the support of the community through donations, sales and staffing. We truly appreciate the continued support and applaud the daily efforts of our volunteers and staff.” Carla Houchen, volunteer director and manager of the Good Cents Store, also stated, “Our store is a work in progress that continues to improve each month due to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. In fact, Ann Ginther, an original volunteer, continues to work here after 20 years! We are blessed to have such a caring community and we thank them for the donations that have poured in since the very beginning and continue to do so.” The Good Cents Store accepts all kinds of donations including clothing, furniture, bedding, curtains, kitchen utensils and appliances. Volunteers sort through the donated items and identify products to be cleaned or possibly disposed of. The volunteers have even been known to take salvageable items home to clean before displaying them on the shelves for resale. As indicated, the Good Cents Store benefits the community in two primary roles. First, it provides good quality clothing (including coats), furniture and appliances to people in the community at very reasonable prices. And secondly, proceeds generated from sales benefit patient care at Sidney Health Center through donations from this volunteer program. Through the years, the Good Cents Store has donated more than $220,000 for equipment at Sidney Health Center. The first donation purchased four wheelchairs in 1989 for $1,320. Since then 24 additional donations have occurred including $77,160 toward the purchase of a new mammography machine in 2005 and $45,000 toward the purchase of a 4D Ultrasound Machine in 2006. The Good Cents Store is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations can be dropped off during store hours or special arrangements can be made by calling 406-488-5008 if unable to drop off during store hours. If you are interested in volunteering at the Good Cents Store, please contact Carla Houchen at the store or at 406-488-2116. Last week, a client complimented me on a poem and article I wrote that my wife hated – so I felt reassured that I’m not a total failure. I then learned that this new friend was a staunch Barack Obama supporter. I also noted that both Obama and Hillary Clinton visited our fine state last week. Montana’s 25 electoral votes (for the Democratic Convention in August) have become important in this hotly contested race. It is a rare event for a sparsely populated state like Montana to get so much political attention. This new friend is a lifelong liberal Democrat. Although I often adopt the conservative viewpoint, I found that her views and mine meshed in several areas. I thought about what this might mean . . . Could it be that I’m a closet liberal? As a young man growing up in Minnesota, I was inundated with the Democratic Party perspective. My family still won’t even consider voting Republican. When I first moved to Montana, I was exposed to “The Conservative” point of view. I was matter-offactly told that “as a young man, if you’re not Liberal, then you have no heart. As you get older, you become Conservative – unless you have no brains.” Differences in political opinion should never lead to bloodshed. Although I plan to vote for John McCain, it might not matter that much which political machine wins the election. That’s a pragmatist viewpoint. In my youth, I was more of an idealist. In fact, I worshipped the ground that Hubert Horatio Humphrey walked on. He was “The Happy Warrior” Democratic Senator from Minnesota, Lyndon Johnson’s VicePresident, and narrowly lost (to Richard Nixon) in his bid to become President. Montanans might have the same affection for Mike Mansfield, who was your four-term Democratic Senator, and served a record 15 years as Senate Majority Leader. I met Humphrey twice. Once when he was stumping for votes at the State Fair, where I was working as a fry cook; and another time when I ran into him at a late night convenience store – where HHH and his secret service Kayla Block agents were purchasing beer and munchies. I once attended a George McGovern rally. Another time I waited two hours to have Jimmy Carter sign one of his books for me. I tried to support Carter – even as his unrealistic dreams were going down the drain. I also voted for Walter Mondale, another Democratic Senator from Minnesota and former Vice-President who wanted to be president. Since then, I’ve voted Republican . . . So you see I’m not the right wing conservative that people have made me out to be. I do hate it, though, when liberals badmouth our conservative presidents. My brotherin-law’s remarks have been particularly offensive. I’d like to take him over my knee for his “anti-Republican” remarks. Since he’s 6’8” tall, that’s not likely to happen. A well-known local priest, Fr. Ned Shinnick, chastises me for supporting George Bush (1st and 2nd), but I remind him that real Americans stand by their presidents – for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish ‘till the next election do us part. For example, I didn’t vote for Ronald Reagan the first time around, but the moral majority (i.e., my wife) convinced me I’d “go to heck” if I didn’t support him in his re-election bid. Besides that, she threatened to negate my vote if I “voted for the other guy.” Implied negation of other areas also influenced me. Politics and marriage, it seems, have become wed together in ways the Constitution never intended. In order to avoid getting any more “Dear Jerome” letters thanking me, in advance, for supporting the party favorite – I’m officially labeling myself “Independent.” That has a nice ring to it. I also hope the months ahead will include some level-headed discussion of candidate public service records, voting records, national security, etc. Regardless of what most of us want, this could be another nasty presidential campaign. Before we let that happen, think of “the other party’s candidate” as a prospective in-law: you might not like him (or her) but you might have to live with him – for the next four years, anyway. Paddlefish Harvest Season Closed In Yellowstone River & Missouri River Below Fort Peck Dam With Montana’s paddlefish harvest quota expected to be reached, the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission closed the 2008 paddlefish harvest season on the Yellowstone River and the Missouri River below Fort Peck Dam on Saturday, May 31 at 9 p.m. Catch-and-release paddlefishing is allowed only at Intake fishing access site from 6 a.m.-9 p.m., beginning on Sunday, June 1 through Tuesday, June 10. The 2008 paddlefish season started slow and increased steadily when high water flows occurred due to rainfall and some snowmelt. Montana paddlefish harvest quota is 1,000 fish and at the present rate of catch the quota will be reached or surpassed in the immediate future. “With the increased flows we are seeing 100-150 or more paddlefish being caught in a single day,” said Brad Schmitz, FWP’s fisheries manager in Miles City. “Rolling Over the Judiths” The MonDak Heritage Center, Sidney, will host an opening reception June 6 at 7 p.m. for the “Anchored in a Sea of Grass” exhibit. This topic will be explored in an interpretive talk by Park Ranger Richard Stenberg, Friday, June 6, at the James Memorial Art Center, Williston. The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. CDT. If you attend the program you just might get a taste of boiled buffalo tongue. This program is the first of the Summer Series of Ranger Talks to be presented by Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site personnel. These programs will alternate between the James Memorial Ar t Center, Williston, and the MonDak Heritage Center, Sidney. In addition, Saturday morning, June 7, a walk will be led up to the Bodmer Overlook starting at 10 a.m. CDT. In 1833, Karl Bodmer sketched what became his famous painting from an overlook to the north of Fort Union Trading Post. The walk to the overlook is through prairie grass and over moderate to undulating terrain. The distance is two miles round trip. Please meet the ranger in the parking lot of Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. For the walk bring water, proper footwear for hiking and a hat to shade your head. Young people are encouraged to attend. Fort Union is located 24 miles north of Sidney, and 25 miles southwest of Williston, via Highway 1804. For infor- mation call the park at 701 572-9083.
