Sunflower Growers
Election Scheduled
Sunflower growers in McKenzie County are being urged
to participate in the election of a county representative for
the North Dakota Oilseed Council. All sunflower growers who
have a definite interest in the membership of the Council are
encouraged to participate in the election at 10 a.m. CT on
Jan. 16 at the McKenzie County Courthouse, Watford City.
Each person, landlord or tenant, husband and/or wife,
who has planted (in 2006), or intends to plant (in 2007) sunflowers, if present in person, is entitled to vote. The elections
will be conducted under the supervision of the McKenzie
County Extension Agent, NDSU Extension Service. The
county representatives for District VII will assemble at the
district level to elect the district’s member of the North Dakota
Oilseed Council.
The Oilseed Council was created by legislative enactment to facilitate the production, development, marketing and
promotion of sunflower, safflower, rapeseed or Canola, flax
and crambe. Because the Oilseed Council has a contractual
relationship with the National Sunflower Association, those
representing sunflower on the Oilseed Council also serve
on the board of directors of the National Sunflower Association.
Counties in District VII include: McKenzie, Dunn, Mercer, Oliver, Stark/Billings, Golden Valley, Slope, Hettinger,
Bowman, Adams, Grant, Sioux and Morton.
Beware Of Herbicide
Telemarketing Scams

It may only be January, but we have already been hearing reports about telephone sales of herbicides that are promoted as a “cure-all” for weed control problems.
We’ve heard of some fantastic claims, such as you can
get up to six years of weed control, or that tough, noxious
weeds like leafy spurge or Canada thistle can be totally eradicated with one application – of course these claims are false.
It gets down to the old saying “If it sounds too good to be
true, it is too good to be true.” Usually these products have a
very low concentration of active ingredients and are sold at a
very high price. More often than not, you will pay from 500%
to 800% more for the same active ingredients you can get
from your local supplier.
If you are called, ask for the manufacturer’s name, address and phone number. Also, ask for the name of the active
ingredients and the percent concentration. And last but not
least, ask if the herbicide is registered in North Dakota.
If the caller is unable or unwilling to answer these questions - don’t buy the product. If they do answer these questions, check it out with your local supplier or your county
office of the NDSU Extension Service.

The annual MonDak Ag
Days and Trade Show is set
for Friday and Saturday at St.
Matthew’s Center in Sidney.
This year’s Ag Days will
include a mix of educational
sessions dealing with pertinent agricultural topics, a
trade show featuring the newest and best in ag products,
the livestock judging and Ag
in the Classroom held at the
Sidney High School Friday.
The Friday night Ag
Days Banquet at the Triangle
Nite Club will feature cowboy
poet Rusty Feathers and
country musician Larry
Gibson.
The featured tour stop
Saturday at 2 p.m. will be
Rudie's Montana Centennial
Farm. Sig Rudie, Jr. will talk
about their farming operation
from homestead times
through today.
Ag Days begins Friday
at 9 a.m. when the doors
open for the trade show. The
educational sessions also
begin at 9 a.m. with a discussion of the Montana Ag
Safety Program by Gene

Judging Contest, which runs
from 9 a.m. to noon at the
Gartner-Denowh Ranch.
Saturday’s trade show
opens at 10 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m.

session on Saturday begins

with the DNRC and Montana

The Horizons community leadership development
program is kicking off this
month in our area. This program focuses on building
leaders and reducing poverty for the next 18 months.
Watford City, Arnegard,
Alexander and Keene have
received this honor through
an application process and
will be one of 24 communities in North Dakota working
to move from despair to hope
and from poverty to prosperity.
They are in Phase 1 of
the program—recruiting facilitators to lead Study Circles.
Study Circles are community
dialogue that can help
people explore complex issues, make some decisions
and begin to take action. During Study Circles, community members come together
to have community dialogue
on poverty.
Facilitators can be youth
or adults. A training for them
will be held on Jan. 11 in
Williston from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
CT. All travel expenses will
be reimbursed and a financial incentive will also be provided. Trainers need to commit to leading Study Circles
for a few hours and will need
to be good listeners, willing
to work with different kinds of
people and to help others
have good conversation. It
can be a very rewarding experience—you will get to
know new people, and learn
skills to help you at work and
home. Above all, you will
contribute to the well being
of the community.

Weight Loss Contest Open To Public

Richland Health Network
Down about Holiday
weight gain? Need motivation and support to work towards a healthy weight? The
Richland Health Network is
again promoting a healthful
weight loss challenge for the
residents of Richland
County.
Thin to Win is a ten-week
contest designed for groups
of three-six people to act as
a team by setting a group
weight loss goal. Individuals
within the group will encourage each other throughout
the competition. Weekly
weigh-ins will be held at the
(Wednesdays from 7:15-9
a.m. and 3:30-5 p.m.). Goals
are set to promote healthful
weight loss. The team which
reaches 100% of its indi-
vidual and group goal will
win the “prize pot”. The more
participants who enter the
Thin to Win contest, the more
cash for the prize pot. Last
year, 90 people on 19 different teams participated in
Thin to Win with a total of
556.3 pounds lost. This number translates into losing the
weight of over three average
Americans!
As our objective is to
promote lasting weight loss,
we will again be encouraging participants to keep food
and physical activity logs to
track successes and increase awareness of habits.
Each week, completed logs
will be entered into a drawing for a $75 gift certificate to
the Jock Stop; the drawing
will be held at the end of the
contest.

Sidney Health Center-Extended Care Facility.

Funeral services for Russell “Jack” Hatter, 87, Squaw
Gap, ND will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Squaw
Gap Hall under the direction of the Fulkerson Funeral Home,

Jack died Saturday evening, Jan. 6, 2007 at the Sidney
Health Center in Sidney, MT.

Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Fulkerson
Funeral Home, Sidney.
Alice died on Saturday morning, Dec. 30, 2006, at the
Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.

Chase G. Denowh
Army National Guard Pfc. Chase G. Denowh has graduated from the Metal Worker Advanced Individual Training
course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD.
He was trained in all phases of welding including ferrous and nonferrous metals using oxyacetylene, electric, arc
and inert gas welding equipment. Class training included
repairing, repainting, installing and inspecting metal body
components, radiators, fuel tanks and modification of related
items. The trainee also learned to repair hulls and accessories of Army watercraft.
Denowh is the son of Michel and Debbie Denowh, HCR
89, Sidney.
He is a 2003 graduate of Sidney High School.

The Fairview American Legion Auxiliary Unit #114 of
Fairview is offering two- $400 scholarships for one year only.
Scholarships for 2006 were awarded to Teresa (Dore)
Pederson, Sidney and Annie Snedigar, Culbertson.
Eligibility: Must be graduating from high school or attending college or vocational school. Scholarship is to be
paid at the end of 12-earned credits. Must earn at least a 2.0
GPA (include transcript). Must present three reference letters
other than teachers.
Comparison: Cannot receive more than $4000 in other
scholarships or grants. Moral character. Need. Hand written
or typed reasons for applying for scholarship.

For Montana Tobacco

Dylan Ryder, 8th grade student at Froid Schools, has
been selected as one of 21 students in the state of Montana
to serve as a leader of reACT, Montana’s new teen-led movement against the tobacco industry. Dylan will serve with 20
other students statewide in various tobacco prevention activities/projects to further the movement at both state and
local levels.
He will attend his first training in Helena on Feb. 9-11.
This training will outline his role and responsibility in the TLT
and give him necessary skills to fulfill them.

information on vehicle restraints
and protecting adult and child
passengers in accredited twohour trainings being offered in
Sidney on Jan. 16.
EMS/First Responder
training is from 8 to 10 a.m. and
Law Enforcement training is from
10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the
Foundation for Community Care
meeting room. The interactive
sessions will be specific to the
needs of participants, and will
incorporate the latest research,
crash-test videos, demonstrations, and vital information for
public education efforts, injury
prevention and enforcement.
“Addressing passenger injury and death and helping the
public avoid them are key issues
for first responders and law enforcement,” according to Patty
Carrell, project coordinator at
Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies
(HMHB). “The public looks to
these professionals for advice
on keeping themselves and their
families safe.”
The program has enlisted
Joseph M. Colella, a recognized
national expert on passenger
safety, to create and deliver the
accredited trainings to Montana

HMHB bring the well-received
presentation, “Crash Injury &
Healthcare” to healthcare professionals at nearly 40 provider
sites throughout the state.
“Motor vehicle crashes are
the leading killer and injurer for
most age groups, and the frequency of deaths and injuries on
Montana roads is increasing,”
emphasizes Colella. “Since
firefighters, emergency medical
service providers and law enforcement officers are respected community members,
and their credibility on injury issues is naturally high, they are
in a unique position to help families protect themselves against
crash forces.” Preventing injuries from ever occurring is far
more effective than any level of
emergency response and treatment, and most serious injuries
can be avoided through education and referral to community
resources. Through appropriate
training, program participation,
media relations and familiarity
with local experts, first-responders are empowered to help save
lives and prevent injuries.
Active and visible enforcement of occupant protection laws
is also a critical part in saving
lives. “The laws of physics supersede Montana statutes, so
officer education is paramount,”
claims Colella. “Through educa-
tion, enforcement and referral to
community resources, most serious injuries can be prevented.
Nothing a police officer does has
as much potential to save lives
and prevent injuries as actively
enforcing occupant protection
laws.”
By the end of the courses,
attendees should have a better
understanding of what happens
to passengers during crashes,
how seat belts and safety seats
manage crash energy, which
types of restraints are best for
children as they grow, and more.
They will be equipped with information they can share with community members, including
where to turn for expert assistance.
“It is critical that we get the
right information to parents and
caregivers in our community,”
emphasizes Christy Kapor, coordinator of Northeast Montana
Safe Kids, Safe Communties.
“Empowering our police officers
and first responders can help
save the lives of our kids and
our neighbors kids, so we are
excited that our community is
stepping up to the plate.”

The beef industry in
western North Dakota and
eastern Montana currently
consists of primarily cow-calf
production and “farmerfeeder” feedlot operations.
North Dakota alone has
about 11,000 beef cattle producers and ranks 13th in the
nation for total beef cow numbers at approximately
947,000 head. However,
North Dakota has only
60,000 head on feed and
183 feedlot operations with
a capacity greater than 500
head, ranking 23rd in the
nation.
A quick look at these statistics would suggest that
there are great opportunities
for feeding cattle in the region. There is an ample supply of cattle, feed grains and
forages are available and
there is an ever-increasing
supply of feed co-products
becoming available.
In order to help beef
cattle producers investigate
the possible opportunities of
feeding cattle, county extension offices in western North
Dakota and eastern Montana
are hosting a one-day workshop that will address a number of the topics associated
with the beef cattle feeding
enterprise. The workshop is
scheduled for Thursday, Jan.
18, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
CST in the Memorial Room
located in the Williams
County Courthouse in
Williston.

This one-day, intensive
workshop will cover a host of
topics including:
* Regional resources
available to support expanded cattle feeding
* Managing cattle
health: preventative medicine, vaccinations, receiving
cattle, diseases and treatments
* Business planning
analysis
* Feeding facilities and
equipment
* Feeding system alternatives
* Rations and feeding
Several NDSU Extension and Research specialists as well as industry representatives will be on hand
to help participants “Investigate the Opportunities for
Feeding Cattle in the
MonDak Region”. Participants should go home with
more knowledge in many
aspects of cattle feeding such
as feedlot management, nutrition, waste management
and marketing.
A registration fee of $20
per person will be charged
at the door that will cover
lunch and materials. The
workshop should be of interest to existing cattle feeders,
prospective cattle feeders,
feed industry personnel, animal health suppliers or anyone interested in learning
more about managing feedlot cattle.

Sidney’s
Jesse
Obergfell and Beau Melby
placed second at the Bismarck Rotary Wrestling Tournament Saturday. Sidney
took only six wrestlers to the
tournament and came home
with five placers.
Obergfell lost a 4-2 overtime match in the 119-lb.
championship to Justin
Solberg of Wahpeton. Melby
fell to Taylor Grunefelder of
Napoleon 9-3 in the finals
matchup at 189 lbs.
Levi Johnson placed
sixth, Jordan Riedmann took
seventh and Josh Moore
was fourth at the tournament.
Richard Heckler went 1-2.
Sidney also sent a
squad of wrestlers to the
Broadus Tournament where
Bryce Vigoren took third and
Ty Tescher placed fourth.
In Junior High action at
New Town, Scott Andreasen,
Brennan Gorder, Joe
Barsotti, Clint Dunn and Tyler
Schilling took first. Gene
Speldrich placed second
and Spencer Brost, Jace
Buxbaum, Scott Sturgis and
Jory Stevens took third.

high written bid or oral bid, the high bidder shall be required to execute
a Purchase Agreement further describing the obligations between

This course is named
after Annie, a woman who
grew up in a small town in
northern Illinois. Her goal
was to marry a farmer and
she did. Annie spent her lifetime learning how to be an
involved business partner
with her farm husband. Together they did great things,
but it wasn’t easy. Annie’s
Project takes her experiences and shares them with
farm women living and working in a complex, dynamic,
evolving business environment. Annie’s Project has
grown and is now offered
throughout many Midwestern
states. It was introduced into
North Dakota last year and
received very high reviews
from the approximately 100
women who participated.
