A Lifetime of Everyday Leadership
Just a few weeks ago, we spent a nice evening with one of our great
Service Unit Teams doing some work around team-building, trustbuilding, and conflict resolution. In one of the first activities we asked
each volunteer to tap into their own personal core values, and in doing
so, it helped this service team identify its collective, overarching value
system. At the end of the exercise, they had identified their three core
values as making a difference, loyalty, and commitment. That was
no surprise. Those core values live in the heart of most volunteers,
and most definitely, our volunteers. But it was when these committed
volunteers wrote their Living Breathing Value Statements using these
three core values that we truly understood the intent and depth of their
commitment. “We will shape girls to be dedicated, caring, open-minded
women.” That thought was at the heart of how they would make a
difference.
And that’s what we are here for, right? We are here to build girls of courage,
confidence, and character to make the world a better place. We do that
by shaping them for a lifetime of everyday leadership. And we are in it for
the long haul. We are here for the girls and for their futures—because their
trajectories pave the road for all of our futures.
Throughout the world, our country, and our region, we are in the midst of
a leadership crisis. Women and girls around the world are regularly either
being locked out of traditional leadership roles or choosing to opt out.
But, at the Girl Scouts, we know there’s a better way. Since 1912, we have
prepared girls and women to empower themselves for a lifetime of everyday
leadership.
Here, girls of all ages and backgrounds are equipped to discover new
experiences, connect with their communities, and take meaningful action—
both big and small. It’s in our DNA. Every day, we step up. We take risks. We
persevere through challenges.
That’s why our girls are Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers and Leaders who can change the world. So this year,
our focus is clear. Want more leaders? It’s simple. We need more G.I.R.L. Scouts.
That starts here, with FOCALPoint. In the pages ahead, you will see that we have, again, doubled programming and
made it available to you for the entire upcoming year. You will find opportunities for our girls that will push them
beyond their perceived limitations. You will find programs that will fill them with knowledge, but also show them
how to apply that knowledge in everyday situations. And then, of course, there’s the fun factor. A dose of fun
makes it easier for girls to let loose, and learn to lead.
Robert Ingersoll said, “we rise by lifting others.” So now that the instrument is in your hands, what road will you
choose to build for our girls this year so that, together, we can build more G.I.R.L. Scouts? We can’t wait to join you
on the journey.

No Girl Left Inside
Girl Scouting has a long history of getting girls outdoors. However, parental protectiveness, increased use of technological
devices, and a host of structured activities competing for children’s time have led to girls spending less and less time
outside. Environmental education, the study of the relationships and interactions between dynamic natural and human
systems, is considered to be so important. There’s even a national No Child Left Inside coalition that advocates and
promotes getting kids outside and active and experiencing the wonders of nature. At Girl Scouts of South Carolina —
Mountains to Midlands, we have made getting girls back outside a priority in response to our own findings of She Sees the
Future.
Based on the feedback of the membership that responded, the Board of Directors made a decision to align property
with our program strategies: destination, program match, usage, previous plans, and partnerships. Outdoor adventure
opportunities remain the top choice of girls at every age level. These destinations include superior indoor and outdoor
experiences. All activities align with the Council’s five areas of leadership development: Outdoor Education; the Arts; STEM;
Healthy Living; and Business Enterprise.
As you and your girls are planning the remainder of their activities for this year, we urge you to include at least one
progressive, outdoor experience that will help them learn to empower themselves and help them gain an appreciation
for our natural world. In addition to what our Girl Scout Council is offering through the fall and spring months, there are
numerous other sources and ideas for outdoor fun as close as your backyard or neighborhood park. Check out the program
section of this FOCALPoint, and look into visiting our Council’s outdoor program facilities on our website too. There are
plenty of experiences that do not require specialized equipment or training. Get your girls outdoors! Connect them to the
environment! Expose them to the beauty and intrigue of nature… simply by putting down the phone, and stepping through
the front door.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a Learning
Adventure For All Ages
This year we have added some more exciting digital
components that are modernizing the sales experience.
It’s not too late to take advantage of them. In addition to
girls being able to create their own goal page and set and
track their progress toward meeting their goals online,
they have tools to reach out to prospective customers
online - including the option of COCOdirect where
shipping is included.
In addition to the actual selling, delivering and recordkeeping experiences, are you helping your girls connect
how their individual efforts combine to earn money for
the troop’s treasury and funding the troop’s planned
activities? Are they discussing the cost of their plans,
learning to budget and prioritize?
During the booth sale/direct sale phase, troops have the
option to accept credit card/debit card payments using
a mobile payment account. The specific details can be
found at http://www.gssc-mm.org.

A Once in a Lifetime Destination
In July, Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands
was awarded a competitive grant from Girls Scouts of the
USA and NASA to host its first ever DESTINATION! While
details are being finalized we are so excited to give our
Council a preview of the Destination experience.
August 19-22, 2017
Girls will arrive at Camp WaBak by noon on Saturday, August
19 and enjoy a Solar Eclipse-themed picnic lunch on the
beautiful grounds. During the afternoon, girls will work
with SC Engineers, A.K.A., Rocket Scientists, to learn about
the physics of rockets and basic rocketry. They will then
work in teams to construct rockets and launch them into
Space! Following lift-off girls will travel to Roper Mountain
Science Center where they will have the opportunity to visit
the Planetarium and the Daniel Observatory. Here they will
experience the Starry Night Feature Presentation and Live Sky
Talk while viewing the stars!
On Sunday, girls will travel to the Challenger Learning Center
where they will experience life as an Astronaut. They will
test their problem-solving skills as they engage deeper in
robotics, rocketry, and aviation while preparing for their
first Mission. Girls will fly a full Space Mission and fly places
through the flight simulators!
Following their Space Mission, girls will travel to The SC State Museum and
Planetarium where they will use the resources to start preparing for the big
eclipse. The group will participate in four activities, including a special full
dome, digital planetarium show that focuses the types, history and mythology
of eclipses, and the exact forces that align to cause a total solar eclipse. Girls
also will receive a guided tour of the Robert B. Ariail Collection of Historical
Astronomy, which is comprised of one of the finest groups of early American
telescopes in the world. All girls will make their own pinhole eclipse viewers and
explore features of the Sun in the museum’s Boeing Observatory. While in the
observatory girls will use special filtered telescopes to discover features of the
sun!
Day three will focus 100% on preparing for and learning about the 2017 Great
American Solar Eclipse. Teams will build model Solar Eclipses and present
these projects to the rest of the group by demonstrating the science behind
the phenomenon. Groups will also explore how plant and animal life react to
changes that occur during total solar eclipses. Just before lunch the girls will
pack up and start the short hike to the “Solar Eclipse” field. Here they will set up
camp, and prepare to view the solar eclipse in the path of totality! On their last
night at camp, girls will be presented with their own telescope and work with
local Astronomers to learn how to use them as they roll out their sleeping bags
and spend their last night of the Destination under the stars.

Money-Earning through Product Sales 2016–2017
Product sales are a popular component of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Product sales assist girls in developing their
self-confidence through entrepreneurial and financial literacy activities while simultaneously providing them with the funds to
experience additional adventures. The five important skills that girls “learn by doing” through product sales are goal setting,
decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.
The Council sponsors two product sales annually. Participation is voluntary. All
registered Girl Scouts in grades K5-12 may participate with written permission from
their parents/guardians.
Recruiting capable volunteer help is vital to the success of product sale experiences.
Every troop that participates needs to have computer, financial, and organizational
skills, and be able to help girls have meaningful, age-appropriate learning experiences
during the various aspects of the program. Troop Product Manager position
descriptions for each product sale are located on our website in the Product Sales
section. Registration for the appropriate product sale adult learning session
signifies that your troop is interested in participating in these programs.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is our premier business enterprise activity.
Selling cookies is a tradition that dates back to 1917 when Girl Scouts began selling homebaked cookies to raise money to help their troop and community. Since then, the activity
has grown into an opportunity for girls to practice leadership while earning money for their
team and Council activities.
Girls learn skills they
will carry throughout
their lives and careers:
In addition to the life skills Girl Scouts gain from their hands-on participation, troops earn
money to carry out their troop activities and also help ensure the future of Girl Scouting
in our communities. All revenue generated by the Girl Scout Cookie Program goes directly
to troops or is designated for program services that directly support girls and/or adult
volunteers in our 22-county area. Girls take orders in January; then deliver cookies and
conduct direct sales in February and March. However, girls may continue taking orders
throughout the sale.
Be Unique. Be You! is the theme for the 2017 Girl Scout Cookie
Program. This year’s Girl Scout Cookie Program is a way for girls
to develop financial empowerment skills they will use throughout
their lives. It’s a great way to think about the many ways the
cookie activity yields tangible results in support of the Girl Scout
Leadership Model. It’s easy to see how the skills gained from the
Girl Scout Cookie Program fit right in with Girl Scouting’s Three
Keys to leadership: DISCOVER, CONNECT, and TAKE ACTION.
The product line includes:
✶ Thanks-A-Lots ✶ Lemonades ✶ Shortbread ✶ Thin Mints ✶ Peanut Butter Patties
✶ Carmel deLites ✶ Peanut Butter Sandwiches ✶
For direct/booth sales ONLY: ✶ Trios—Gluten Free cookie ✶
And look for a new cookie, coming this January!
Last year our girls did an amazing job with the new digital cookie system – COCOdirect. All sales made through COCOdirect
have no money collection and no delivery of cookies! COCOdirect makes it easier than ever for girls to connect with their
out-of-town customers who want to help their favorite Girl Scouts be part of the world’s largest girl-led business. We will
continue to expand our digital capabilities, alongside our traditional order card and cookie booth options.
EVERY COOKIE HAS A MISSION: TO HELP GIRLS DO GREAT THINGS.

MEMBERSHIP
The cost of becoming a Girl Scout member is $15 per year for girls and adults for the 2016–2017 membership year. Adults
also have the opportunity to become lifetime members for a one-time fee of $375.
Girls and adult volunteers are welcome to join Girl Scouts at any time during the year. Some rejoin each spring when they
register to go to Girl Scout summer camp. Some troops take the fall season off to accommodate busy schedules, and
then launch or re-launch their Girl Scout troop experience in January.
Financial assistance for membership dues is available. Contact your area’s CDM for more details.
Troop leaders may turn in the registration forms and dues they have collected to their service unit’s registration checker,
Community Development Manager (CDM), or regional Girl Scout Service Center. Registration instructions and forms can
be downloaded from our website Forms Directory.
Troops that start in January have several options for participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Your CDM and Service
Unit Cookie Manager can provide details.
Girls are also welcome to join and participate in our summer camping options.
GIRL SCOUT UNIFORMS
Although uniforms are not required, each Girl Scout grade level has one element (tunic, sash, or vest) for the display of
official pins and awards. Uniforms will be required when girls participate in ceremonies or officially represent the Girl
Scout Movement. For girls in kindergarten through 12th grade, the unifying look includes wearing a choice of a tunic, sash,
or vest for displaying official pins and awards, combined with the white polo shirt or their own solid white shirts and khaki
pants or skirts. Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies have a full collection of uniform components available as an alternative to
wearing white shirts and khaki pants or skirts.
The adult uniform consists of a Girl Scout scarf for women and a tie for men, worn with navy blue business attire and the
membership pin.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Girl Scouts is powered by volunteers. Only about 1% of all adult members is paid staff. Help recruit more Girl Scout
volunteers and community partners to Girl Scouting. Direct them to “Volunteer Now” on our website, www.gssc-mm.org,
under the Volunteer tab, then Ways to Volunteer.
The volunteer screening and placement process includes a volunteer application, personal references, and background
check plus two required trainings.

ADULT LEARNING AND VOLUNTEER SUPPORT
Adult learning sessions for volunteers who work with girls in troops, along other role-specific learning opportunities, are
published in FOCALPoint’s Adult Learning section and on our website. Be sure to check our website for adult learning
session options, dates, and cancellations.
Local service unit meetings, which happen at least four times a year and generally monthly, often include an adult learning
component designed to help those who work directly with girls to become more adept. Open communication about
needs, concerns, problems, and ideas will generate helpful involvement, trust, and respect. Ask for assistance from other
volunteers, parents, Council staff, community resource people—and, of course, the girls!
PROGRAM FACILITIES
Our Girl Scout Council offers a wide range of facilities that are available for Girl Scout troop/group outings, such as
camping and outdoor days, and for Council-sponsored events and activities. Reservations can be made up to four months
in advance of the desired usage date. Detailed information about the facilities and their capacities, along with pictures,
rental fees, and the reservation procedure, is located on our website. You may also contact The Customer Experience
Team for more information or visit www.gssc-mm.org.

Troop Experience and Beyond
Girls can take advantage of what Girl Scouting offers through a variety of participation options. In addition to the activities
that are planned and carried out at the troop level, there are ways for individuals and small groups of girls to participate in Girl
Scouting.
Many of our service units sponsor events locally, giving girls and their families the opportunity to experience a communitybased Girl Scout activity while enjoying the support of a wider network of community volunteers. Most often, information
about these opportunities is provided through troop leaders.
The Council also sponsors a variety of program events, workshops, and series, thanks to the involvement of community
partners and volunteers who share our commitment to girls’ growth and development in ways that foster their leadership
development. Note: Individual girls are welcome to attend alone or with a friend or two. She must attend with an adult,
unless otherwise stated in the description. Earned Cookie Dough may be used for girl program fees.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for any of the Girl Scout events, workshops, or series sessions listed below; or
you would like to explore the feasibility of an additional opportunity for girls that would have appeal beyond the troop, please
contact our Customer Experience Team.
Key to Council-Sponsored Events/Workshops & Series

Program Events/Workshops and Series
Q.
Q. CAN I BRING ALONG AN EXTRA CHILD TO THE EVENT?
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR AN EVENT OR WORKSHOP?
A. No, not unless activity information specifically states
that the event is appropriate for families or nonmembers. Program activities have been designed
specifically for the grade levels indicated.
A. Online: Visit www.gssc-mm.org; click into the event
you want to attend on the Events page. Then simply
follow the directions to register for the activity. The
online registration system cannot accept Cookie Dough.
To redeem Cookie Dough, use a Program Registration
Form. Actual Cookie Dough must be attached to the
registration form. Registration Form: Use the Program
Event Registration form when registering to attend as an
individual or as a troop.
Q.
HOW MANY ADULTS HAVE TO ATTEND THE EVENT?
A. A minimum of two adults should accompany the
troop/group to a program activity unless otherwise
noted. Please confer with the activity’s staff manager
if your group is not able to attend with the adult-togirl supervision ratio (see Safety Activity Checkpoints
or Volunteer Essentials for ratios). We may be able to
provide the necessary adult supervision by utilizing
other adult volunteers.
Q. WHEN AND HOW CAN I REDEEM COOKIE DOUGH
FOR PROGRAM FEES?
A. Cookie Dough may be used for girls’ fees for Councilsponsored programs listed in FOCALPoint, Councilsponsored Girl Scout resident camps and day camps,
GSUSA-sponsored destinations, and Council-sponsored
trips with regional, national, and international itineraries.
It may also be used for Girl Scout Silver and Gold Award
Project expense and to help pay for Girl Scout Lifetime
Membership. Sister-to-sister transfers will be accepted
for sisters living in the same household. Cookie Dough
is issued in $2.50 and $5 increments. Unused value will
not be redeemed for cash nor returned. 2015 Cookie
Dough expires September 30, 2016.
Q. WHAT IS THE RAIN PLAN?
A. For most events and workshops, inclement weather
is not an issue. In the case that an activity is affected,
leaders of troops and parents of individual girls will be
notified by a Council staff person prior to the activity.
Q. HOW WILL I KNOW THAT MY REGISTRATION HAS
BEEN ACCEPTED?
A. When registering online you will receive a confirmation
of registration. This indicates receipt of your registration;
additional confirmation materials will be sent at a
later date. Please add [email protected] to
your email safe list. For all registrations (online and
paper) a confirmation or “over capacity” notice will be
e-mailed or mailed to the responsible adult once the
event minimum is met. Registration will close when
the maximum capacity is reached or on the ending
registration date (generally three weeks prior to the
event/workshop), whichever comes first. Additional
detailed confirmations may be provided for some
events, which may include information such as driving
directions, a list of things to bring or pack, and any
additional information specific to the activity.
Q. WHAT IF I/WE CAN’T ATTEND AFTER WE HAVE
REGISTERED? CAN I GET A REFUND?
A. The Council and our community partners start planning
long before the date of the actual program. Staff
and volunteers are secured, food and supplies are
purchased, and sometimes other girls are turned away
because you have registered to be there. Refunds will
only be offered in the following circumstances:
• the Council cancels the program event/workshop.
• proof of military or job transfer is provided in
advance.
• participant becomes ill and a doctor’s written notice
is provided that indicates that her
• participation is not recommended. Doctor’s written
notice can be turned in within 30 days of the event.
• your registration cancellation request is received six
weeks prior to the day of the event.
Q. WHAT IF I HAVE PARTICIPANTS WITH SPECIAL
NEEDS?
A. Please let us know if we will need to accommodate
any girl’s or adult’s special needs when you register.
If you have questions, please contact the Customer
Experience Team.
Q. SHOULD WE BRING THE PERMISSION SLIPS AND
HEALTH HISTORY FORMS WITH US?
A.
Yes. Although we will have a First-Aider at the activity,
we ask that an adult attending with your group bring
and keep your troop’s event specific Parent Permission
forms and Health History forms with her/him.

Adult Learning Opportunities
The Volunteer Experience Department plans and provides opportunities for Girl Scout adults to gain the knowledge and
skills to perform their volunteer roles with competence and satisfaction. Ongoing and flexible adult learning opportunities
are offered to ensure that new and continuing volunteers have the support you need as a volunteer in Girl Scouting. These
opportunities will not only help you work more effectively with girls, but also introduce new skills and behaviors into your work
life, relationships, and personal development.
Our courses and formats continue to evolve as we endeavor to accommodate a variety of learning styles and time
constraints. Enthusiastic Girl Scout staff, volunteer adult learning facilitators, and other content experts will provide the
guidance you need to help you learn what you need to be successful in your role.
Recognizing the importance of having troop leader volunteers who are comfortable facilitating girl-led,
developmentally-appropriate, interactive activities, the following standards have been established to ensure high
quality and safe program delivery to girls:
Standard: Each troop must have one qualified leader present at all troop functions.
The definition of a qualified Troop Leader (position code 01)* in GSSC-MM is one who:
• Has an approved GSSC-MM Volunteer Application on file
• Has a cleared background check on file
• Has completed these two initial volunteer learning courses:
• Girl Scouting 101 prepares volunteers to guide effectively the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, the engine for
everything girls do in Girl Scouting. This course is offered online, and can be done in person, as needed.
• Mountains to Midlands 101 is the introductory course covering procedures, policies, and processes used in Girl
Scouting and in Mountains to Midlands. This course is offered in person.
• Is a registered Girl Scout (This is an additional required form, different from the Volunteer Application Form and includes a
$15 membership fee.)
*The Volunteer Experience team highly recommends that multiple adults in each troop meet the 01 qualifications.
Any additional adult needed to meet the girl/adult ratio should meet the following minimum qualifications and
should register as an Assistant Leader (position code 02):
• Has an approved GSSC-MM Volunteer Application on file
• Has a cleared background check on file
• Has completed the initial volunteer learning course: Girl Scouting 101
• Is a registered Girl Scout (This is an additional required form, different from
the Volunteer Application Form and includes a $15 membership fee).
Girl/Adult Ratios Girl Scouts has established girl/adult ratios for supervision
based on grade level and they are found in the Quick Start Guide and SafetyWise chapter of the Volunteer Essentials handbook on Page 60.
CPR and First Aid: Each troop is encouraged to have an adult certified in CPR/
FA to serve as the troop first-aider. Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains
to Midlands provides for one troop adult to be certified in CPR/FA annually.
The Fall Product Sales Program makes this opportunity possible. CPR/FA is
required before participating in specified activities as defined in Safety Activity
Checkpoints and/or Volunteer Essentials.

A
Registration is necessary for all adult learning sessions
to allow the volunteer adult learning facilitator time to
prepare for the class and to ensure that enough course
materials will be available for participants. Non registered
participants place an unreasonable burden on registered
participants, the facilitator, and the host site. Please
register at least four (4) days before the sessions. For

description and in your confirmation letter.
A
Sessions that do not meet the minimum number of
registered participants will be cancelled. Only registered
participants will be notified by telephone, mail, or e-mail.
Please note: You are not confirmed until you receive
notification from Council. If you are unsure about your
confirmation, then please contact a member of the
Volunteer Experience team.
Q
What should I do if I need to cancel my
registration?
A
To cancel, please notify the Volunteer Experience Team
or Registrar at any service center as soon as possible.

Adult Learning FAQs
Q
If I cancel my registration, will my payment be
refunded?
Q
Is training from another Girl Scout Council or
another agency transferable?
A
In most cases, refunds or a session transfer will be
allowed when requested at least three business days
prior to the session. This may not be possible if fees to
outside consultants have been paid, or if food and other
supplies have been purchased. Check with the Volunteer
Experience Director for questions on a particular session.
Individuals who do not show up for a session without
giving prior notification may forfeit a refund or transfer.
A
If the courses taken are equivalent, then credit can be
transferred. You must provide documentation of the
training taken. Contact the Volunteer Experience Team
to discuss your situation.
Q
How can I participate in additional adult learning
opportunities?
A
Attend your service unit meetings. Additional sessions
may be announced or conducted at these meetings.
Give suggestions for additional adult learning
opportunities to the Volunteer Experience Team.
Take advantage of adult learning opportunities in
your community that might support your Girl Scout
leadership role.
Q
What happens if I arrive late to a session?
A
Arriving more than 20 minutes late or leaving 20 minutes
early may result in not receiving credit for taking the
course. Please be considerate of our volunteer adult
learning facilitators and other participants in the session.
Q
May I bring my child with me?
Q
A
In order to create a safe, comfortable, learning- friendly
environment, children are not permitted at adult learning
sessions. Please make arrangements for child care.
Who do I contact if I have questions about adult
learning?
A
For more information about adult learning, contact a
member of our Volunteer Experience Team through
the Council’s toll free number, 800.849.GIRL (4475).
Q
Will a record be kept of the Girl Scout adult learning
sessions I attend?
A
An attendance record is kept for each session.
This information is transferred into your volunteer records
in our membership system. Please be sure to bring your
training record card to each training. If you don’t have one,
then your facilitator can provide one to you.
Q
Do I have to complete courses in person?

present to your instructor at the classroom skills session where you will demonstrate your CPR, AED and First Aid skills. Part
Two: The classroom skills session includes video instruction and hands-on practice.

Hold award ceremonies to celebrate what girls have learned; enjoy beloved Girl Scout
traditions, such as flag ceremonies, sing-alongs, and campfires; or come together at bridging
ceremonies to mark the moment when girls move to the next level in Girl Scouting.
USE A GIRL-FRIENDLY APPROACH
Girls have fun when they can shape their own experiences, do hands-on activities, and work
together as teams. Help make this happen by using Girl Scouts’ three processes: Girl Led,
Learning by Doing, and Cooperative Learning.
ENCOURAGE GIRLS TO EARN
AND LEARN THROUGH THE
GIRL SCOUT COOKIE PROGRAM
Coach girls to develop five key skills—Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management,
People Skills, and Business Ethics—by taking part in the largest girl-led business in the world.
INSPIRE GIRLS TO CONTINUE
GROWING THROUGH GIRL
SCOUTS
Share with girls the exciting opportunities they’ll have—to learn new things, meet new friends,
and make the world a better place—by staying involved in Girl SCouts.
