With outdoor recreation literally moments from your doorstep, join in the group who call this region their vacation paradise or their home. With rolling mountains reaching to the blue sky, green forests in every direction, and four distinct seasons to enjoy, you will enjoy spending time in our special corner of the world. Visit the historic Keller House and the Heritage Center in Colville The Keller House, built in 1910, has been restored to nearly original condition with parquet floors and original furnishings. The museum exhibits a complete diorama of an Indian village, a pioneer township with stores, newspaper, dentist office and more. On the grounds are located a one-room schoolhouse, a trapper’s cabin, a homesteader’s cabin and more. It is worth the time to bring the kids and explore our past. One of the last remaining Drive-In Movie Theaters in Washington State Just west of Colville on Hwy 395, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Auto Vue Drive-In shows first run movies and has a great snack bar. Come and show your kids how much fun watching from the car can be! For movie times and shows call 509-684-6119 or check on Facebook at Alpine Theater, our Art Deco styled indoor theater on Main Street. St. Paul’s Mission overlooking Lake Roosevelt View a replica of the Catholic mission built in 1847 at Kettle Falls overlooking Hudson’s Bay Fort Colville, now under the waters of Lake Roosevelt. Listening to the wind, you can almost hear the travelers portaging around the falls right past the Mission. While there, visit the Kettle Falls Historical Center Museum with native artifacts. Drive the International Selkirk Loop Super Loop Drive to Chewelah over the beautiful Flowery Trail, up US Hwy 395 to Colville through beautiful pastoral valleys with antique barns dating back to the days when this area was known for dairy farming. Then head east over the Tiger Highway, State Route 20, to Ione and back down along the Pend Oreille River. This is a favorite route of motorcyclists and bicyclists who love long sweeping turns and broad vistas. Brilliant yellow larches and aspens in the fall make the trip unforgettable. Drive along Lake Roosevelt View the beautiful scenery and small communities along the lake. You can almost visualize what the Columbia River was like before Grand Coulee Dam, with steamboats the main transportation in the area. Cross the lake at Gifford on the free ferry to Ferry County and follow the Inchelium Highway back north to Highway 20. Visit in the winter and go skiing at 49 Degrees North You can ride the ski lifts into the sky and see all the way to Canada and Idaho. Rated number one for families in the region, 49 Degrees North sports legendary tree skiing, terrain park, Nordic trails and 300 inches of snow annually. Come and bring the whole family. Of course no one wants to stay home! 5 Location Directions and Transportation Stevens County, located in the northeastern part of Washington State, is bordered on two sides by rivers and lakes, and highways follow these routes. Our neighbor to the north, British Columbia, Canada provides a mountainous backdrop to the mountain ridges across the county. Colville, the county seat, sits at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 395 and State Highway 20, the northernmost crossstate highway. On the west side of the county, State Highway 25 follows the Columbia River/Lake Roosevelt from Two Rivers past Kettle Falls and Northport to the Canadian border at Rossland, BC. Starting just north of Spokane, Stevens County is over 84 miles long going northsouth. With mountains scattered over the landscape, few roads go in a straight line for very long. Numerous paved county roads provide beautiful panoramas in every direction and make for nice loop trips including the Flowery Trail Road headed east out of Chewelah. Rental cars are available from Booth and LaDuke Motors in Colville at (509) 684-8404. Reservations can be made at www.goldline.us or 1-888-739-5395 for bus service on the Gold Line Bus from Kettle Falls, thru Colville, Chewelah and points south to North Spokane, the Spokane Amtrak Station and Spokane International Airport. US Airways, Continental and Frontier. If you fly your own plane, both Colville and Chewelah have city airports. The Colville Municipal Airport is equipped with a 2,700-foot runway aligned with a 15-foot wide taxi way. The airport currently has the capacity to hold approximately 40 aircraft. A courtesy car is available by contacting the airport manager Dave Garringer at (509) 6859056. Chewelah's Airport boasts a 3800 foot paved, lighted runway that can accommodate a variety of aircraft, including small jets. A visitors lounge provides additional amenities, and local telephone service. A courtesy car is available by contacting the airport manager Lee Dorrance (509) 935-4852. The Airport is adjacent to the Chewelah Golf & Country Club at (509)935-6807. Additionally, Stevens County businesses rely on OmniTrax rail services to ship goods such as wood products, minerals, fertilizer and general merchandise. Other Commercial Airlines serving Spokane manufacturers use one of the many truck include Alaska, Horizon, Delta, Southwest, lines to ship goods across the country. BUICK CHEVROLET (509) 684-8404 Toll-Free 1-800-281-8404 880 South Main St. Colville, WA 99114 6 Weather and Climate Stevens County is located in the northeastern Rocky Mountains on an area called the Okanagan Highlands. Just east of the Kettle Crest Range in Ferry County and with parts of the Selkirk Mountains the highest point is Abercrombie Mountain at 7,308 feet. The lowest point is the confluence of the Spokane and Columbia Rivers at normal water level of 1284 feet. At 1,635 feet elevation Colville sits in a valley surrounded by mountains averaging 5500 feet high. The climate offers the four seasons with normal summer temperatures reaching in the 90s during the day and cooling off comfortably at night. Fall delights include an array of dynamic colors with aspens and larch turning bright yellow. During winter, heavier snows in the mountains are a treat for snow enthusiasts. Spring brings an invitation to plant, as the growing season lasts between 110-130 days. The average rainfall is approximately 17 inches. History Stevens County has a fascinating history starting with the Native Americans who lived near the Columbia River and fished for salmon for thousands of years. Explorers and fur trappers from Europe and the newly formed countries of Canada and the United States roamed over the rivers and mountains. David Thompson’s visit to the area literally put northeast Washington on the map in 1811. The discovery of gold in 1852 in the region brought many more immigrants. Loggers, farmers and ranchers were the last major influx at the turn of the century. People continue to move to the area today for clean air and water and small town friendliness. Colville, founded in 1890, developed a “civic plaza” (the only one known of its kind in the state of Washington), which includes the Stevens County Courthouse, Colville City Hall, Colville Public Library and Colville Post Office on four corners in the geographical center of the city. National Historical Register buildings, along with other buildings and private homes, make up the Historic Building Tour, a creation of the Colville Historic Preservation Committee. The building of Grand Coulee Dam in 1939, that backed up the Columbia River for nearly 150 miles, changed the region as the historic salmon fishery ended. Campgrounds now ring the lake where small towns once existed. Water enthusiasts enjoy the opportunity to boat, sail, swim, fish and camp in the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Northport, Kettle Falls, Daisy and Hunters provide supplies to the recreationists. The Stevens County Historical Society (SCHS) volunteers operate the Keller Heritage Center in Colville daily from May to September from 10 to 4. To arrange a special tour, call (509) 684-5968. The grounds are located on 700 N. Wynne Street just two blocks north at the Safeway stoplight. The SCHS operates a research and reference library full of historic documents, history and photographs. It’s open Wednesday by appointment. For more information go to www. stevenscountyhistoricalsociety. Phone Website org. The system is a relative system, valid only on the trails at a single ski area. Skiers and riders should work their way up, beginning with the easiest trails, no matter what their ability level may be, until they are familiar with the trails at that ski area. Snow Skiing and Cross Country Skiing The peak of winter activity is literally on Chewelah Peak at 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort. With acres of legendary tree skiing, local skiers and riders know that 49 Degrees North is Washington state’s best kept winter secret. Located just 9 miles east of Chewelah, this family-friendly resort truly offers adventures for everyone. 49 Degrees North also has a Nordic ski center complete with 25 kilometers of groomed trails with both track and skate decks. Go to www.ski49n.com for the latest snow conditions and to learn more about resort services. Frater Lake on the Colville National Forest 29 miles east of Colville on Highway 20 also has 10 miles of groomed cross country skiing and a warming cabin near the lake. Snowshoers enjoy trails here also. 12 Seasonal Recreation Snowmobiling With trailheads east of Colville, northeast of Colville and east of Chewelah, you can sled for miles and miles in Eastern Washington. Parking at the Flodelle Creek Sno Park gives you access to over 138 miles of groomed trails, a warming hut and all of the Calispell Peak Trail System. Visit www.parks.wa.gov/winter/trails to find the maps necessary for the area. The third weekend in January each year is the Gold Rush Snowmobiling Fun Run sponsored by the Driftriders Snowmobile Club. Starting at Beaver Lodge Resort, about 24 miles east of Colville, the Fun Run brings in sleds from around the region. Spring Spring is beautiful in Stevens County, trees are bright green with new growth, but the trail system needs time to thaw. It is a great time to go fishing! Fishing Fishing season officially begins the last Saturday in April in Stevens County. Lake Roosevelt and the Spokane River on the south edge of Stevens County are known for walleye pike. Two tournaments are held at the Kettle Falls Marina each summer. Fly fishing on the Little Pend Oreille River and McDowell Lake on the LPO National Wildlife Refuge provide challenges for dedicated fisherman. At Potter’s Pond on the LPO NWR and at Big Meadow Lake on the Colville National Forest, there are handicapped accessible fishing docks. Fishing regulations vary from lake to lake, so check the state website at www.wdfw.wa.gov/fishing or check where you buy your license for the regulations and seasons. Turkey Hunting Colville is known as the Wild Turkey Capital of Washington because more turkeys are found in this region of the state than all the rest of the state together. Starting in April, residents are awakened to the sound of turkeys gobbling as they look for potential mates. Tom Turkeys, mostly of the Merriam subspecies, are hunted in the spring with the season lasting from April 15 to May 31. There is another season the first week of October. Wildlife biologists from the area agencies have put together a helpful online map of potential turkey hunting grounds which you can access at www.colville.com. Bird Watching and Wildlife Photography Migratory birds return to the region and are a sure sign spring is coming. Robins and red-winged blackbirds arrive in late March followed by the Canada geese and other waterfowl. The small songbirds arrive in April and soon the air is filled with their noisy mating calls and busy nest building activities. Rufous hummingbirds are a favorite of the locals as are the bright yellow warblers. Over 200 different kinds of birds have been spotted at the LPO National Wildlife Refuge. It is worth a trip to the LPO’s McDowell Marsh Environmental Education Trail with its handicapped access and 300 feet of boardwalk across the marsh to see numerous birds and maybe a glimpse of a moose. A photo blind at the marsh allows undisturbed viewing. Bald eagles often congregate at the Colville River/Lake Roosevelt confluence area for the fish swimming upriver there. 13 Seasonal Recreation Summer Summer brings warm days, cool nights and sunshine that lasts for 17 hours. Hiking, Backpacking, Mountain Biking, Horseback Riding and Trail Biking With the snow melted off the trails, you can hike, mountain bike, ride horseback, or trail bike your way throughout the Colville National Forest, Department of Natural Resources lands, and the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge. Find maps for each area to see where your favorite activity is held. There are trailheads throughout the county heading into the mountains with varying degrees of difficulty. With the extent of the forest in this area, you may hike all day and not see other visitors. Jeep and ATV trails to the top of Dominion Mountain and Radar Dome Mountain provide panoramic views in all directions. Hiking to the top of Abercrombie Mountain takes you to the highest point in Stevens County at 7,308 feet, with gorgeous vistas to Idaho and Canada, but be advised that this is bear country. House Boating, Power boating, Sailing, Water Skiing, Swimming, Canoeing, Kayaking, Wind Surfing and Rowing If water sports are more to your liking, Lake Roosevelt and the Kettle River form the western boundary of Stevens County and provide miles of water for all water activities. Houseboats, rented at Kettle Falls Marina or Two Rivers Marina, can be navigated down the lake and parked on any beach for days of fun. Loon Lake, Waitts Lake, Deer Lake, Lake Spokane, and the Little Pend Oreille Lakes allow motors, water skiing and personal watercraft. On a hot summer days, heading out to one of the local beaches is a favorite pastime. You can even go late in the afternoon, as living in the far north means long days in the summer. Visit www.nps.gov/laro for the boat launches and beaches along Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (Columbia/Kettle Rivers.) Floating in rafts and tubes down the Kettle River near Orient is a very relaxing and a refreshing way to spend the day. Geocaching, GPS and Orienteering and Huckleberry Picking With numerous geocaches in the county, this quiet sport continues to grow in popularity. Virtual geocaching now allows visits to the sites without damage to the flora and fauna. Geocaching.com provides lists of sites in the area. Huckleberries are a favorite in the mountains and you will know if you have a very good friend, if they share their huckleberry picking location. It would be good to have the GPS to find the location again! 14 Fall As snow does not usually fall until November in most areas, this can be one of the best times to be outside for an adventure. The air is cooler, the insects fewer and the crowds even smaller than usual. Camping, Hiking, Mushroom Picking and Hunting Camping, which is available from mid-April to the end of the year at both public and private campgrounds, is fun in the fall when the cool air makes sleeping bags feel really good. Unless it is an especially dry year, fires are allowed in fire pits at all campgrounds on public lands. There are campgrounds at most lakes, along Lake Roosevelt, and in the Colville National Forest. Fall turkey season is popular and then bear, moose and white tailed deer seasons attract hunters to Stevens County who want to fill up the freezer before the cold weather sets in. With the seasonal Pacific Coast weather an influence in our area, fall turns to rain and then snow and then the snowmobiles are out in force again! 3rd & Oak - In Colville For Information: 509-732-6619 [email protected] May thru October • Noon - 6:00 pm Wednesdays Farmers’ Market Saturdays May thru October • 8:30 am - 1:00 pm To sell or for questions call Market Managers (509) 690-7096 Corner of Astor & Main - in Colville (at the Clock Tower) Scenic Drives, Nature & Recreation Areas National Bicycle Route: This scenic crosscountry route roughly follows the northern border of the “Lower 48” of the U.S. Starting in Anacortes, Washington, the route travels 4,295 miles to Bar Harbor, Maine. Our downtown clock tower statue honors them. Today, logging still plays a major role in the community with the Vaagen Bros. Mill crane standing over the west side of Colville. Other industries include boat building and refrigeration coils. Colville boasts a friendly, historic downtown shopping district with specialty shops. With five thousand people living here, it is a nice sized town that celebrates Colville Rendezvous Days the first weekend in August. Come and “Discover Our Good Nature” while you enjoy a round of golf at Dominion Meadows Golf Course. Kettle Falls, near to the Columbia River, had to be moved when Lake Roosevelt was filled behind Grand Coulee Dam. Kettle Falls took over the town site of Meyers Falls and has grown to 1,660 friendly folks and one “Grouch,” elected each year during Kettle Falls Town & County Days in June. Boise has two mills in Kettle Falls and Avista Utilities has a generating plant. The “kettles” of Kettle Falls are now under the water of Lake Roosevelt. Stop by the new visitor center to learn about events and attractions in the are. Marcus, a small community of 180, was also moved when they filled the lake in 1939. Now it is best known for its ten foot high apple press and for celebrating Marcus Cider Fest the first weekend in October. Northport, home to 200 folks, is north of Lake Roosevelt and prides itself on being on one of the last free-flowing areas of the Columbia River. The Northport International Raceway, established in 1953 is one of two dirt tracks remaining in eastern Washington. They are home to Modified, Super Stock, Fever - 4, and Hornets. Northport is also home to Chine Bend Winery, the only winery in the county and host of the Garlic Festival each summer. Chewelah, home to 2200 people, was established in 1903 and boasts the county’s only 27 hole golf course, 49 Degrees North Ski Resort, and the Chewelah Casino owned by the Spokane Tribe. During World War I, Chewelah was the world leader in mining magnetite. People travel from all over the region to attend Chautaqua Days, a juried art and music show in July. Springdale, billing itself as a unique country town respecting a slower pace where “yesterday has a home,” is home to the world’s smallest museum in the foyer to Geronimo’s Restaurant. Frontier Days hosts a Pee Wee Rodeo in May and ProWest Rodeo in July. The 250 residents work together to sponsor these events. Loon Lake, Deer Lake and Waitts Lake, centrally located in the county, sport accommodations including vacation homes, RV parks and resorts. The clear water and good fishing make the lakes popular family vacation destinations. Valley sports a café, mercantile, tavern, gas station and post office. It is representative of rural Stevens County with fields of wheat in the valley and tree-covered mountains raising on the sides. The Valley Fair in August showcases the region’s agriculture. Hunters and Fruitdale, among other small communities along Lake Roosevelt, provide community markets for residents and tourists alike with one-stop shopping. Hunters boasts the oldest continually operated one-day fair in the state. Clayton, with its Community Fair and historic school, display artifacts from one of the original brick mines in the area and Leno Prestini, who did many of the sculptures in the area including the rams heads on the Davenport Hotel in Spokane. Lake Spokane/Suncrest, with five thousand residents, follows the Spokane River from Nine Mile Falls dam to Long Dam for 25 miles. This community is in Stevens County, but just outside of Spokane where folks work and shop. Many folks have their own docks on Lake Spokane and enjoy family time at the lake. Lake Spokane hosts a Renaissance Festival and 4th of July Car Show and Fireworks event. The Spokane Tribe of Indians are of the Interior Salish Group, which has inhabited northeast Washington, northern Idaho and western Montana for many centuries. The Spokane Tribe now lives on 159,000 acres around Wellpinit and continue to contribute to the larger community of Spokane, Washington. The lumber industry is a natural partner, which is why Vaagen Bros. Lumber, Inc. celebrates more than 50 years of providing employment opportunities in their mill and in private contract timber harvesting. Vaagen Bros. Lumber, Colville’s very own local saw mill, is a third generation family-owned entity that began in 1952. Today, Vaagen Bros. leads the timber industry in maximizing the use of every tree that is harvested and in producing the highest value by-products from the harvested trees. The company is also the leading timber industry in working with environmental organizations and the local communities to find workable solutions to natural resource management problems. Stimson Lumber Co. is a privately held natural resource and forest product company and is one of the oldest, continuously operating companies of its type in the country. Stimson Lumber Co. owns and manages more than 500,000 acres of forest land in the western United States. The Arden facility provides jobs for approximately 55 people in the surrounding Colville area in a safe, environmentally friendly atmosphere. Boise Cascade LLC’s dedicated workforce over the years makes it a mighty voice in today’s business and environmental circles. Its Washington region holdings employ 800 workers in two plywood plants, two small log mills, two large log mills and a cadre of forestry, logging and administrative personnel. Colville’s recreational nature makes it a good fit for companies associated with the outdoors. That’s why Hewes Marine Company, a family-owned manufacturer of Hewescraft aluminum boats, has operated here for 57 years. Other industries also are eager to participate in our growth. Hearth and Home Technologies (a division of Hon Industries) occupies a 125,000-square-foot facility on 17 acres and manufactures wood stoves. Colmac Coil Manufacturing continues to increase business with new international contracts in the heat transfer product market from this base. Agribusiness also plays a large role in Stevens County, with family farms raising cattle, sheep, hogs, chickens, dairy, wheat and alfalfa. A mobile poultry processing unit allows chickens to go right from the farm to the table. Large Farmers Markets are held each Saturday and Wednesday in Colville, Friday in Chewelah and on Saturday in Lake Spokane. Stevens County leans heavily on the state’s work training programs to give both its employees and employers a leg up on the competition. We also tap into Washington’s Work Source, a one-stop source that matches skilled workers to companies needing specific qualifications. 31 Health & Medical Stevens County, with a population of more than 43,000, enjoys an extraordinary array of health, fitness and medical services. The healthcare needs of all generations visiting or residing in the county and its surrounding area are serviced by two accredited hospitals with a wide variety of disciplines of healthcare providers. Fortunately, when it comes to possible problems inside the body, doctors are now using some advanced tools to focus on exactly what they need to see. One of the latest cutting-edge diagnostic tools is the 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner. Providence Mount Carmel Hospital is fortunate to have this advanced equipment in house. The scanners use special x-ray equipment to take multiple pictures—or slices—of internal structures, such as organs, bones and blood vessels. A computer program then combines all of these slices into detailed, cross-sectional views. Providing much more information, their thinner slices are recorded more quickly, leading to images with even more detail. These machines are so fast they can record motion-free images of a beating heart and the blood vessels that feed it. These advanced CT scanners allow cardiologists to gauge the buildup of dangerous plaque in the arteries without the need for an invasive coronary angiogram. A 64-slice CT scan can also quickly and accurately show whether or not someone who is experiencing chest pain is having a heart attack. CT scans are also used: • To study all types of tissues in the chest and abdomen. • To find cancers, such as those in the lungs, liver and pancreas. • To detect spinal problems and other skeletal injuries, since even the smallest bones and nearby tissues can be seen. • To locate vascular diseases that can lead to stroke or kidney failure. Your doctor might order a CT exam for any number of reasons. For example, it might be used to help guide a biopsy, to plan a surgical procedure or to measure bone density. A CT scan can also quickly spot injuries to internal organs after an accident or more precisely target radiation treatments. In addition to the above mentioned exams, Providence Mount Carmel Hospital has the ability to perform ER/trauma exams much faster and gather more information. Special exams, such as 3D, cardiac, vascular and pulmonary can also be performed.
