TODAY’S SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
It is perhaps one of the most exciting and yet
frightening times of a young couple's lives. From the
moment they discover that they are expecting a child
to the very moment that he or she enters the world,
the parents-to-be are filled with joy, but also concern.
Will their baby be healthy? Today's doctors can detect
health issues long before the baby is born; if
something is discovered, how does the young couple
receive the news? Are they faced with difficult
decisions, or are they bolstered by the message found
in today's Gospel?
Given the circumstances of today's fast-paced life, it is
difficult to imagine the pace of life in Jesus' day. On a
journey by foot through Galilee, Jesus and his
disciples had many hours to discuss the meaning of
life and the role of Christ in their lives. He tried to
explain his final days and hours, but even with
seemingly all the time in the world, they did not grasp
the immense message he was giving them. Perhaps
seeking an easier way to say it, he held a small child,
telling them that if they accept an innocent child, they
are accepting him, and in accepting him, they are
accepting God.
In praying the Lord's Prayer, we first and foremost
proclaim "Our Father." This is done with the intent to
remind us that in order to be fully revealed in our
hearts, we must appear to God as innocents, children
willing to accept his love unconditionally. We are
asking for a purification of our hearts (CCC 2779). As
Jesus held that small child out to his disciples, he
gave absolutely no conditions as to acceptance of a
child. As innocents, children are the symbol of the
purity of life and the purity of the love Jesus has for us
all.

OUR CATHOLIC FAITH
Apologetics
Q – I feel closer to God when I am outside, in nature.
Why do I need to go to Mass to worship Him?
A – You may indeed feel a deeper peace in the
mountains than at Mass, and you may feel more
inspired looking at the ocean than at a stained-glass
window. That’s fine, and even understandable. God
created these things. They are distant “icons” (i.e.,
images) of Him that give us a glimpse of His beauty,
vastness, and power.
If spending time outdoors nourishes your soul, then
do it. Many of the saints did so. For example, Blessed
Pier Giorgio Frasatti was an avid mountain climber,
and St. Francis of Assisi probably perceived God in
nature more than anyone else in Christian history.
Pope John Paul II loved to ski, hike, and kayak. He
would even take religious retreats and spend a good
part of the day skiing! But these holy men and women
all spent much of their time in church, at daily Mass
and praying before the Blessed Sacrament. They
would be the first to agree that, while one may or may
not have a grace-filled moment in nature, every Mass
is guaranteed to be filled with the presence of God,
even if we don’t “feel” it.
God is present in four specific ways in the Mass:
1. In His people. God dwells in our hearts through
baptism. With our ability to know (intellect) and love
(free will), we image God in a profound way.
2. In His priest. Jesus Christ is present to us in a
sacramental way through the person of the priest who,
by virtue of the sacrament of holy orders, stands in
persona Christi (“in the person of Christ”).
3. In the Scriptures. Every time Sacred Scripture is
proclaimed, God pours out His life-changing grace
upon His people so that they can put this word into
action. As the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965)
proclaimed, “For in the sacred books, the Father who
is in heaven meets His children with great love and
speaks with them” (Dei Verbum, no. 21).
4. In the Eucharist. This is where we most fully and
intensely encounter Jesus, who is truly present under
the appearance of bread and wine—body, blood, soul,
and divinity.
God may be spiritually present with you as you
walk through the woods, but He is both spiritually and
physically present during the Mass and in the
tabernacle. So, if nature nourishes you spiritually, then
by all means, spend some time praying there. But if
you want to experience God in the deepest way
possible in this life, go to Mass.
Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who
asks you for the hope that is in you, but do it with
gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15-16).

OUR PARISH FAMILY
WANT TO GROW IN HOLINESS, BUT TOO BUSY?
Want to transform your work, your marriage, your
family, and your life, but don’t have time? Looking for
the quickest, surest, and easiest way to holiness, but
don’t know where to begin? In our hectic day and
time, Pope John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa
knew that the quickest way to be transformed into a
saint is through a relationship with Our Blessed
Mother, Mary. Join us on October 28 as we begin a 33
-day preparation for Marian Consecration. For six
weeks, we’ll individually read about and reflect on four
great Marian giants: St. Louis de Montfort, St.
Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Pope
John Paul II. They’ll teach us the secrets to drawing
closer to the Heart of Jesus through the Heart of Mary.
In our weekly Wednesday meetings at St. Elizabeth
from 6:30 pm – 8pm., we’ll share our insights within
our small group and then watch a 30-minute video.
The video by popular author and speaker, Fr. Michael
Gaitley, MIC, brings our individual reflections and
group experience into a clear and live-able focus. If
you’re looking for a simple way to be spiritually
renewed, develop a deeper relationship with Our
Merciful Savior, and grow in holiness, join us for 33
Days to Morning Glory Small-group Retreat. Pick up a
flyer in the back of church and contact Terri Niesen at
[email protected] or 262-942-9196 prior to October
10.

THE “EPIC” STORY OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
Epic: A Journey through Church History is a
captivating and fast-paced look at the story of the
Church. Beginning with the lives of the apostles all the
way up to the present day, Epic takes the immense
history of the Church and simplifies it into 12 time
periods. In 20 sessions, we will learn about the major
people, places, and events that make up our story in
Christ. We will gain an understanding that enables us
to have a greater sense of our meaning and identity
as Catholics. Join us for the Epic: A Journey through
Church History beginning Monday September 28 at
6:30 PM at Holy Rosary Parish’s DeSimone Hall. An
optional $25 Study Set may be ordered if
desired. For more information or to register please
contact Deacon Dan Burmeister,
