Welcome
Thank you for choosing to connect to the Internet with CoopTel !
Founded in 1944, CoopTel is the only cooperative in Québec to operate a telecommunications

Granby and Sherbrooke, and serves over 7000 subscribers in 13 municipalities the largest of
which include Valcourt and Roxton Falls.
CoopTel is owned by the over 7000 members in the region. A team of some twenty employees
oversees equipment installation, maintenance, customer service and administration.
CoopTel’s mission is to provide a diversified range of reliable, competitively priced
telecommunications products and services tailored to ever evolving subscriber needs through
the use of leading-edge technology and the backing of capable, committed partners.
In this Internet Installation Kit, you will find simple, easy-to-follow instructions for

Factors which can negatively impact 56 K connections
First check to make certain that you have the most recent drivers for your modem
(supplied by the manufacturer). Generally, driver files may be downloaded from the
manufacturer’s website. Next, select the right driver for your particular modem. Then
carefully follow driver installation instructions.
If you have a cordless telephone, answering machine, fax machine or other device
connected to your computer modem line, you may experience interference on your
line. Although interference of this nature may be inaudible to the human ear, it can
impact proper modem operation.
If the telephone cord running from your computer to the wall or duplex jack
measures more than 2 metres in length, you may experience interference. It is
preferable that the jack to which your modem is connected be linked directly to the
box where the telephone line enters your home or office.
Make certain that your telephone cord does not run alongside an electrical cord.
Telephone cords and electrical cords do not mix well when it comes to 56 K
connections. Other possible causes of interference: electrical devices such as radios,
fluorescent lights or motors.
The distance between you and the central telephone office may be part of the
problem: the longer your outside line, the greater the loss in signal power (dB). This
can render your signal more susceptible to interference. There is no ideal distance,
but suffice it to say that subscribers living within 5 km or less of the central telephone
office are more likely to obtain a more stable 56 K connection.
The quality of your modem, serial port (UART) and your computer are also factors
which can impact communications quality.
5
Monitoring your Internet usage
High Speed overage alert
To ensure that all of our subscribers enjoy first quality High Speed Internet service
and are not negatively impacted by individuals who overuse available bandwidth, we
have instituted a policy whereby subscribers are billed monthly for overages in
bandwidth use.
To find out the maximum bandwidth to which you are entitled under your Internet
service package, visit our website at www.cooptel.qc.ca.
Checking individual Internet use
To ensure that you do not exceed the limit to which you are entitled under your
Internet service package and do not incur extra charges as a result, we encourage you
to monitor your individual Internet use regularly.
If you subscribe to our basic 56 K Internet package, you are subject to a maximum
time allowance, whereas with our High Speed Internet service you are subject to a
maximum bandwidth allowance per month. These allowances are established based
on your chosen Internet service package.
You may check your individual Internet usage by logging on to our website at
www.cooptel.qc.ca.
Note: You will be required to enter the CoopTel user name and password you received
when you first subscribed.
IMPORTANT ! AVOID UNWANTED LONG DISTANCE CHARGES !
Please note that CoopTel cannot be held responsible for long
distance telephone charges incurred for dial up access.
Before configuring the dial up access number on your
computer, test dial the number to make certain that it is indeed
a local and not a long distance number.
If you hear the modem dial tone, then the number you have
dialled is a local number. However, if you receive a message
indicating that the number dialled is long distance, contact a
CoopTel Technical Support representative for assistance.

Configuration of Web proxy
The proxy server is a software application which assumes that CoopTel customers
sometimes view the same things on the Internet. To avoid searching for the same page
several times in sequence on the Internet, CoopTel uses an intermediary or proxy
which conducts the search on behalf of the user.
If a second user requests the same page, the proxy will retrieve the page from a
temporary file set up during a previous search and present the page for viewing in
much less time than it would otherwise take to search the Web.
This entire operation is automatic provided that your browsers are configured in
accordance with the following procedure:
Internet Explorer 5.x…
1 Click on Tools, and then on Internet Options.
2 Click on the Connections tab. Select your modem connection which appears as
‘CoopTel’ in the example.
