Name Joseph Croteau User name (login) jcroteau E-mail address [email protected] Factors which can negatively impact 56 K connections First check to make certain that you have the most recent drivers for your modem (supplied by the manufacturer). Generally, driver files may be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. Next, select the right driver for your particular modem. Then carefully follow driver installation instructions. If you have a cordless telephone, answering machine, fax machine or other device connected to your computer modem line, you may experience interference on your line. Although interference of this nature may be inaudible to the human ear, it can impact proper modem operation. If the telephone cord running from your computer to the wall or duplex jack measures more than 2 metres in length, you may experience interference. It is preferable that the jack to which your modem is connected be linked directly to the box where the telephone line enters your home or office. Make certain that your telephone cord does not run alongside an electrical cord. Telephone cords and electrical cords do not mix well when it comes to 56 K connections. Other possible causes of interference: electrical devices such as radios, fluorescent lights or motors. The distance between you and the central telephone office may be part of the problem: the longer your outside line, the greater the loss in signal power (dB). This can render your signal more susceptible to interference. There is no ideal distance, but suffice it to say that subscribers living within 5 km or less of the central telephone office are more likely to obtain a more stable 56 K connection. The quality of your modem, serial port (UART) and your computer are also factors which can impact communications quality. 5 Monitoring your Internet usage High Speed overage alert To ensure that all of our subscribers enjoy first quality High Speed Internet service and are not negatively impacted by individuals who overuse available bandwidth, we have instituted a policy whereby subscribers are billed monthly for overages in bandwidth use. To find out the maximum bandwidth to which you are entitled under your Internet service package, visit our website at www.cooptel.qc.ca. Checking individual Internet use To ensure that you do not exceed the limit to which you are entitled under your Internet service package and do not incur extra charges as a result, we encourage you to monitor your individual Internet use regularly. If you subscribe to our basic 56 K Internet package, you are subject to a maximum time allowance, whereas with our High Speed Internet service you are subject to a maximum bandwidth allowance per month. These allowances are established based on your chosen Internet service package. You may check your individual Internet usage by logging on to our website at www.cooptel.qc.ca. Note: You will be required to enter the CoopTel user name and password you received when you first subscribed. IMPORTANT ! AVOID UNWANTED LONG DISTANCE CHARGES ! Please note that CoopTel cannot be held responsible for long distance telephone charges incurred for dial up access. Before configuring the dial up access number on your computer, test dial the number to make certain that it is indeed a local and not a long distance number. If you hear the modem dial tone, then the number you have dialled is a local number. However, if you receive a message indicating that the number dialled is long distance, contact a CoopTel Technical Support representative for assistance. 6 Telephone numbers for 56 K dial up connections 514 312-9229 TOWNS/CITIES/MUNICIPALITIES TELEPHONE EXCHANGES Montréal and localities within local Montréal calling area Toll free 514 and 312 numbers Bromptonville 541-846 Lawrenceville 535 Roxton Falls 548 Lennoxville, Sherbrooke 212-340-345-346-347-348-349-432-437-542-5 60-562-563-564-565-566-569-570-571-572-57 3-574-575-577-578-580-620-674-678-679-780 -820-821-822-823-829 Granby 204-330-360-361-372-375-378-405-521-522-5 25-531-574-577-578-770-775-776-777-830 Magog 746-843-847-868 450-532-8100 532 450-535-6100 450-548-8100 450-546-0800 819-858-2048 819-820-8200 Waterloo 539-734 Acton Vale, St-Théodore-d’Acton 236-546 Upton 549 St-Hyacinthe 209-223-230-250-251-252-261-278-484-501502-513-518-642-768-771-772-773-774-778779-888 St-Nazaire-d’Acton 392 St-Liboire 793 Ste-Rosalie 799 Ste-Christine, Durham Sud 858 Drummondville 314-388-390-445-461-469-470-471-472-473-4 74-475-477-478-479-816-818-850 L’Avenir 394 Deauville 240-864 East Angus 251-832 Stoke 258-878 Eastman, Mansonville 292-297 Stratford 443 Chartierville, Scotstown, St-Malo 656-657-658 North Hatley 675-842 Waterville 677-837 Richmond, Wotton 826-828 Ayer’s Cliff, Compton, Danville 835-838-839 Coaticook, East Hereford, Windsor 844-845-849-926 Asbestos, Bury, Cookshire, Rock Island, Weedon 872-875-876-877-879 Bishopton, La Patrie, Sawerville, St-Adolphe-de Dudswell 884-887-888-889 7 Basic Internet Service – 56 K Manual configuration of connection software for users of Windows 95/98/ME/2000 To create a new connection, proceed step-by-step in the following sequence: 1 Double-click on the Desktop icon.
