market share in Ukraine
• How has the introduction of Ka-band services impacted economic
growth in the region?

The role of hardware in facilitating service
provider innovation
• New frequencies and applications may require new infrastructure.
However, service providers are seeking rapid ROI and end users are
requiring more services at reduced costs (lower TCO). How is satellite
network hardware evolving to meet the changing needs of VSAT
service providers?
• Out with the old, in with the new? To justify CAPEX, users expect the
"new" to deliver new, differentiated or premium services with lower
OPEX. To what extent can existing VSAT network hardware be
adapted for new network requirements?
• What is the cost of innovation? Examining the OPEX and CAPEX
implications for VSAT service providers.

PREVENTION THROUGHOUT
THE VALUE CHAIN
Organized in coordination with the Broadcasting,
Military, Humanitarian and Maritime Sectors
In Association with WBU-ISOG, RFI-EUI and sIRG
Interference prevention measures are getting traction worldwide. Building
upon the successful VSAT 2012 Interference Prevention Summit, this year's
event will provide the satellite industry and key customer groups -- including
broadcast, military, humanitarian, maritime and other users -- with an
opportunity to expand upon the current implementation of value-added
interference prevention and mitigation solutions.
The implications of the gains made recently are profound. The Summit will
provide satellite communications users with an opportunity to report on the
impact those solutions are having on operational effectiveness and quality of
service. Likewise, the satellite industry will give updates on their latest
progress and join in open-forum discussion on how satellite-industry
programs can further improve our value proposition.
Foremost among the programs to be addressed during the Summit:
•
Applying industry testing and approval of fixed VSAT, auto-deploy and
"Comms on the Move" earth station equipment for broadcasting,
military, and other users.
•
Implementing the new DVB Forum carrier-ID standard.
•
Delivering the broadcasters' newly-launched SNG Operator Certification,
as well as the latest VSAT Installation Training for maritime and
humanitarian organizations.
•
Cooperating on measures that address intentional interference.
•
Defense of satellite spectrum in preparation for the World
Radiocommunications Conference in 2015.
•
Benchmarking for satellite distributors and VSAT operators.

SATELLITE BACKHAUL WORTH
INVESTIGATING FOR RURAL
CONNECTIVITY
Dimitris Mavrakis
Principal Analyst, Networks
Informa Telecoms & Media
Twitter: @dmavrakis
Mobile operators are turning to rural areas – even in developed markets – to expand their
subscription bases or to increase revenues from these markets by offering additional valueadded services to their subscribers. The opportunity is even higher in developing markets,
where unconnected rural areas hold potential for significant organic growth.
There are several challenges for rolling out mobile connectivity in rural areas, and the most important barrier for
remote areas is cost-efficient backhaul. Several technologies are available:
•
•
Microwave: The most popular and attractive
technology for nonurban areas, where traffic
is transferred through point-to-point (PTP) or
point-to-multipoint (PMP) RF signals.
Multihop microwave: In cases where the
rural area to be connected is farther away
from an aggregation point than a single
microwave link can provide, multiple hops
are introduced for the microwave links.
•
Satellite: Geostationary orbit (GEO) satellite backhaul
has traditionally been used by mobile operators.
Economies of scale and competition have brought
equipment costs down to reasonable levels, but
leasing capacity is still expensive for operators to
consider in large-scale deployments (more than
US$1,500 per megabits-per-second per month). New
spectrum bands are emerging however(particularly the
Ka-band) that will offer higher bandwidth at lower
prices, even for GEO mobile backhaul.
Different backhaul technologies have advantages and disadvantages (see fig. 1). In general, backhaul for rural
connectivity is often the biggest barrier for a successful and profitable rollout. This is backed up by a survey Informa
Telecoms & Media conducted in 1Q12, with respondents citing backhaul costs as the biggest barrier for rural
network rollouts.
