Home Sweet Home
The OC Fair has called several cities in Orange County home over its 125 years. It started as a horse race with
a few exhibits in Santa Ana in 1890. In 1911 it was moved to Anaheim and themed “Anaheim Carnival.” In 1917,
after the Orange County Farm Bureau was formed, the Fair moved to Huntington Beach. In the 1920s and
1930s, the Fair called Santa Ana and Pomona home. In the 1940s, it returned to Anaheim and took a hiatus
during World War II.
In 1949, the Fair found its current home at the former Santa Ana Army Air Base when the State of California
authorized the purchase of the base to be utilized as the fairgrounds for the newly formed 32nd District
Agricultural Association. In 1953, the City of Costa Mesa, which included the fairgrounds, was incorporated.
Dates
The OC Fair has grown from a three-day community event to a month-long summer must-do. From 1890
through 1971, the Fair was three to six days long and was held in either fall or summer. By 1972, the Fair was
a standard summer event that had extended its dates to include 10 days of activities. For the 1987 and 1988
fairs, guests could enjoy 11 consecutive days of fun and from 1989-1991, they had 12 days. From 1992 to 2002,
the OC Fair hosted 17 consecutive days of events and in 2003 extended its dates to 21 days and closed on
Mondays. From 2009 to this year, the Fair has been open 23 days and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

125 YEARS OF THE OC FAIR, CONT.
More Than Just A Fair
The OC Fair has offered a variety of entertainment beyond concerts over the years including record-breaking
Ferris wheel rides, cattle drives down city streets and beaches, pageants and more. Here’s a short list of
some of the special events the OC Fair has hosted:
1897: The opening day of the Fair was coined “Ladies’ Day” and all women were admitted free.
1906: The Fair celebrated the completion of the Pacific Electric Railway from Los Angeles to Santa Ana
with floats and various products of the county on display.
1922: The automobile was a featured exhibit.
1936: The “Greatest Historical Parade” recounted the romantic story of California with floats and more
than 1,000 costumed people and 500 decorated horses participating.
1950s: Special events included daily ostrich races, pogo stick races, helicopter rides and a wild animal
circus.
1963: A newfangled push button phone was presented by Pac Bell.
1969: A scale model of Apollo 11 was featured.
1972: The first fair stamp in the nation became a reality in 1972 and a special post office was set up at
the Fair.
1984: The Fair became bigger than life when an inflatable, 72-foot King Kong towered over the
fairgrounds.
1986: An inflatable 50-foot Statue of Liberty wowed guests as President Reagan and Governor
Deukmejian paid visits to the Fair.
1988: Skydivers “dropped” in on opening day.
1991: Dr. Norm Gray, an entomologist from University of California at Davis, performed daily in the
arena, covering his body with pheromones (the perfume of the queen bee), resulting in several hundred
thousand bees covering his body while he played the clarinet in the key of B.
1993: The Fair marks the 100th anniversary of the Ferris wheel with a record-breaking 38-day Ferris
wheel ride.
1994: An authentic cattle drive down Fairview Road was staged with more than 125 riders and 250 head
of cattle.
2001: The Fair introduces adrenaline junkies to the Orange Crush Demolition Derby.
2007: The Fair showcased two cattle drives one on the sandy shores of Huntington Beach as part of the
US Open of Surfing and in the other some 300 head of cattle were led down the streets of Costa Mesa
from Fairview Park to the OC Fair.
2008: The Fair partners with the Maloof Money Cup to offer three days of skateboarding and BMX
competitions in the Action Sports Arena.
2009: The Fair offers Fairgoers a self-produced, interactive exhibit called “Al’s Brain – A 3-D Journey
Through The Human Brain with ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic.” The Fair adds a twist to the traditional demolition
derby by using Class-C motorhomes instead of cars.
2011: Fair sets a new attendance record with 1,401,267 guests over 23 days July 15-August 14. The 2011
Fair was themed “Let’s Eat!”
2012: The Fair turns the popular demolition pink for breast cancer awareness and the first all-female
derby called Damsels of Destruction Demolition Derby.
2013: The Pacific Amphitheatre saw its highest grossing season ever without lawn seating. The Fair
also introduces the OC Fair Foodies, a collection of food-related costumed characters that roamed
the property and accompanying plush toys available for purchase. The Fairs Foodies included Olivia
(orange), Cornelius (roasted corn), Arturo (churro), Carl (cotton candy), Spike (carrot), Mike (baconwrapped turkey leg), Dip (corn dog), Clemon (lemon), Scoop (ice cream cone) and Slim (slice of bacon).
2014: The Fair saw a record 3 days with more than 80,000 people in attendance. The highest day for
