Danylo Halytskyi International Airport ‘‘Lviv’’ is
the biggest airport in Western Ukraine according
to passenger flow and destination network. It is
located in the southwestern part of the city and
has a favorable location well connected to the
city’s infrastructure.
As of now, Danylo Halytskyi International Airports’
destination network consists of 27 routes (24
international and 3 domestic). The new airport
terminal started operating on April 12, 2012
specially to host the Euro-2012 championship. It
was built at the territory of the excisting airport with
the use of the recent developments in the aviation
industry, in accordance with modern technologies
of passenger and baggage handling, as well as
with international architectural and engineering
standards and requirements of International
Civil Aviation Organization and International Air
Transport Association.
New terminal "A" has:
• total area of 39,000 m2
• 9 departure gates, 4 of which are jet bridges
• 28 check-in desks, 2 self-service check-in
kiosks
• 18 passport control checkpoints
• 12 aviation security control checkpoints
• 15 airline offices
• VIP-lounges for the passengers of

The new airport terminal was built with
consideration for people with physical disabilities.
Therefore all the zones and rooms of the terminal
were equipped to provide easy mobility and
transportation of disabled passengers.
In June 2013 during the forum ‘‘Airport Development
– Russia and CIS’’, Danylo Halytskyi International
Airport ‘‘Lviv’’ was given the title ‘‘Best Airport in
CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States)’’.

Main Railway Station
Lviv was the first city in Ukraine with it’s own railway. The first train
arrived to Lviv from Vienna on November 4, 1861. Today Railway
provides international connection to Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary,
Romania, Poland, Russia, and Bulgaria.
If you travel to Lviv by rail from Western and Central Europe, the
most convenient route will be to get to the Polish city Krakow and
then take a direct train to Lviv.
If you are travelling from Southern Europe we recommend that
you come to Ukraine’s neighbouring countries. For those travelling
from Middle Asia we recommend getting to Kyiv and boarding one
of the trains which run to Lviv several times per day. Besides, some
of the cities from those parts have direct rail service to Lviv.
As for domestic rail service, the majority of trains running to
Western Ukraine go through Lviv – you only have to choose the
one that suits you.
When you get to Lviv by train it’s very easy to get everywhere in
the city by tram, bus or taxi.

Many regular bus routes in Western Ukraine (both direct or transit)
run to Lviv from virtually every city, town or village.
A number of regular bus routes run from almost every city in
Ukraine and the largest cities of the European Union to Lviv. You can
get to Lviv by regular bus from the Netherlands, Greece, Slovakia,
Hungary, Moldova, UK, Spain, Belarus, Russia, Germany, France, the
Czech Republic, Latvia, Italy, Estonia, Austria, Latvia, and Poland.
If you are coming from abroad it is easier to get to Lviv from
Ukraine’s neighbouring countries.
As a rule, regular international buses stop at the Central Bus
Station ‘‘Lviv’’.

Geographical position
Ukraine is situated in Eastern Europe. Its neighbours
are: Poland, Belarus, Russia, Moldova, Romania,
Hungary, Slovakia. The geographical center of
Europe is in a village of Dilove (Rakhiv district).
Population — 44,573,205 people.
It is the 5th largest European country in terms of
population.

Area — 603,628 km . It is the largest country entirely
within Europe and second largest country of the
Eurasia after Russia.
First settlements appeared here more than 150,000
years ago. Ukraine is descended from Kyivan Rus
(9–12 c.) which was the largest and most powerful
state in Europe.
Independence of Ukraine — 24th August 1991.
Geographical position
Lviv is situated in the western part of Ukraine just 70
km from the EU border and 160 km from the eastern
Carpathian Mountains.
Population — 757,500 people.
It is the 7th largest Ukrainian city in terms of
population.

The first record of Lviv as a city was made in
chronicles in 1256.
Founder of Lviv — King Danylo Halytskyi, who
named the city in honour of his son Lev.
The cultural capital of Ukraine
The historic city centre (120 ha) is on the UNESCO

preserved throughout the centuries.
Lviv’s climate is humid continental with soft winters, wet springs, mild summers, warm and dry autumns. The

Lviv has a long history of being an attractive MICE
destination in Europe
The Galician National Exhibition of 1894 was one of the most well attended
business events in the history of Lviv. Businessmen from all over Europe
attended the 139 day event and 1,146,329 people visited the show. The
exhibit laid the foundation for technological innovations and development
of modern infrastructure in Lviv.
The Eastern Trade Fair was a major trade fair in Lviv. The total exhibition
area was 220,000 m2, 22,000 m2 of which was filled with pavilions. It was
established in 1921 and designed to facilitate new business partnerships
with Poland, Romania, Hungary and the Soviet Union. This annual trade
fair was held in Lviv 18 times with exhibitions by 229 companies from 23
countries.
Local Self-Governance Forum
For two years Lviv is hosting All-Ukrainian Forum of local self-governance.
The main goal of 2014 event was to initiate specific changes directed at
empowerment of local communities along with creating mechanisms of
successful local development.
More than 150 guests from Ukraine and abroad took part in the discussions
– Ukrainian ministers, representatives of the European embassies, city
mayors, delegates from international organizations, Ukrainian and foreign
experts in the field of local government.
Lviv Publishers’ Forum
For 20 years Lviv International Publishers’ Forum is taking place in the city.
Lviv International Publishers’ Forum is the largest series of fair, intellectual
and cultural events in Ukraine. This international event brings together
writers, translators, public figures, journalists and opinion-leaders from 25
countries of the world.
One of the most prestigious events for specialists at the Lviv International
Publishers’ Forum is the Publishing Business Forum, which is the most
interesting event for business tourism.
Win with the Lion
The Tourism Forum “Win with the Lion” is an annual tourism dedicated
event held in Lviv, a historic tourist destination in the western part of
Ukraine. Each year, the Forum attracts travel industry leaders, decisionmakers, C-level executives and young aspiring tourism professionals from
all over Ukraine and other countries under one roof to present dynamic
content, covering a variety of the hottest topics for the travel marketplace,

The notable people of Lviv
Stefan Banach (1892–1945) —
was a member of the Polish
Academy of Sciences and
a journalist of Academy of
Sciences in the Ukrainian
Soviet Socialist Republic
(USSR). He is generally
considered
to
have
been one of the most important and influential
mathematicians of the 20th c. He is one of the
founders of modern functional analysis and the Lviv
school of mathematics.
Zygmund Gorgolewsky
(1845–1903) — was an
architect who built the Grand
Theatre in Lviv (currently
Lviv Opera Theatre) and
also numerous buildings
in Germany and Poland. In
1896 he won the contest for
the project of City Theatre. In order to construct
the theatre, they had to change the watercourse
of the river Poltva. In fact, the Theatre is standing
right at the same place were the river Poltva used
to flow.
Solomiya Krushelnytska
(1872–1952) — the worldwide known opera singer,
one of the brightest soprano
opera stars of the first half
of the 20th c. She began as a
singer of Lviv Opera being a
student of Lviv Conservatory
and later became the primadonna of La Scala Opera
in Milan. Nowadays, the Lviv Theatre of Opera and
Ballet is named after her.
Stanislaw Lem (1921—
2006) – Polish science fiction
writer and futurist, born in
Lviv and graduated from
Lviv Medical University. He
is one of the most popular
Polish writers. His books
have been translated into
41 languages and over 27 million copies sold. The
most famous is his novel Solaris (1961), which was
made into the feature film three times.

Archbishop of the Ukrainian
Greek Catholic Church from
1901 until his death. During
his tenure, he led the Church
through two world wars
and seven political regimes:
Austrian, Russian, Soviet, Polish, Soviet, General
Government (Nazi), and again Soviet.
Rudolf Stefan Weigl
(1883–1957) — was a Polish
biologist who invented
the first effective vaccine
against the typhus epidemic.
He graduated from Lviv
University Biologic Faculty. He
founded the Weigl Institute
in Lviv where he undertook vaccine research. In
2003, professor Weigl was posthumously awarded
the medal of Righteous Among the Nations of the
World by the state of Israel.
Julian Zachariewicz
(1837 –1898) — was a Lviv
architect and renovator,
founder of the Lviv school
of architecture, which that
defined architectural culture
in Lviv in the 19th–20th cc.
Zachariewicz was a graduate
of the Royal Polytechnic Institute in Vienna, and a
professor and rector of the Lviv Polytechnic. He
designed, among others, the railway station in Jassi
and the building of the Lviv Polytechnic.
Very many notable people were living and working
in Lviv over the centuries. Lviv remembers its
scientists, writers, inventors, politicians, actors
and all the people who brought fame to the city.
Among them there are the writers Ivan Franko,
Bruno Shultz, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky,
son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Franz Xaver
Wolfgang Mozart, historian Ivan Krypiakevych
and very many others, who were born here or
inspired by the city. These people contributed their
knowledge not only to the sciences, arts, religion
or politics, but also to the rich heritage of the city.

We promise you will be surprised by how far your budget will stretch – Lviv is such a great value!
All services you’ll use will be of European level but for Ukrainian prices (much lower than in any other
European country). You can have lunch in a nice restaurant just for 10 euro. Lviv is one of the least
expensive major cities in the world.

Infrastructure
The newly constructed Danylo Halytskyi International Airport, which is only 7 km from the city
center, makes air travel a breeze. There are daily flights from Warsaw, Vienna, Kyiv and Moscow. There
are more than 70 hotels, 38 of which boast 3-5 stars. Total guest room capacity in 4 & 5 star hotels –
700 rooms. There is a wide range of conference halls for different capacity, with the biggest one for

Scientific heritage and history
Lviv region is third in number of scientific organizations in Ukraine, it is an ancient scientific
center in Europe. Kerosene was invented here, the first effective vaccine in the world for the typhus
epidemic was discovered here. American journal “R&D Magazine” put the inventions of Lviv’s scientists
together with inventions of NASA to the rating “Top 100 best developments in the world”. Around
40 research and development institutes and scientific-research design institutes are situated in Lviv.
KPMG recognized Lviv as a top emerging IT-BPO destination in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Young and educated city
Each 5th citizen of Lviv is a student. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1661) is one of the oldest
universities in Central Europe and the first university in Ukraine. Education institutions of Lviv are in
the top ratings of the most recognized education institutions in Ukraine. There are 33 institutions of
higher education which gives Lviv its reputation as a city with high level of education.

Lviv Opera House hosts international opera festivals
and contests dedicated to Solomiya Krushelnytska
– the great Ukrainian opera singer, the patroness of
the theater, diva of European theaters (end of 19th c. –
beginning of 20th c.).
The theater is the only member of the international
association ‘‘Opera Europe’’ in Ukraine.
The theater’s Mirror Hall hosts press-conferences for
wide-scale events of different levels as well as receptions
for several dozens of people after a performance,
as it was done at the Presidential Summit for Central
European Cuntries in 1999. There are also exhibitions
held.
One of the most representative exhibitions was held
in 2010 – ‘‘Stage Costumes of the World Opera Stars’’
from the collection of La Scala theater in Milan.

Lviv History Museum
Lviv History Museum offers a facility in the city center
for carrying out conferences, art presentations,
business meetings and art events. The building consists
of the Ceremonial Hall (80 m2) and the Hallway (38 m2)
along with the amazing monument of architecture – the
Italian Courtyard.
The facility is located on the second floor at the back side
of the Korniakt Palace (architectural monument of the
16th c). The historical interior of the Нall is decorated with
ornamental frieze and old masters’ paintings. It creates
a ceremonial atmosphere which is only increased by the
antique chandeliers, furniture and piano.
You can enter the building through the Italian Courtyard.
The Italian Courtyard is surrounded on the perimeter by
open loggia-like arcades similar to the inside courtyards
of old Italian palazzo. Temporary exhibitions, cultural
events and theatrical performances are carried out in
the galleries during the spring and autumn periods. The
great acoustics help you to enjoy the special sound of
the musical instruments and vocals, and the architecture
serves as a great decoration backdrop.

House of Scientists – former casino for Lviv’s elite – is one
of the most amazing and beautiful buildings in Lviv. It is
recognized as a valuable neo-baroque architectural icon.
The construction was ordered by the studs’ owners club
and was carried out by the famous Austrian company
Fellner and Helmer in 1898. Every hall impresses visitors
with its pathos and beauty. For example, Salon on the
first floor is a long hall decorated with gilding elements,
gilding balcony for orchestra, and a fireplace.
On the second floor there are 3 beautiful halls: a
Conference hall (Theater hall) with a stage, which used
to be a place for visiting concerts and drama; White hall
with a fireplace and a black grand piano; gala Red hall;
beautiful and cozy Blue hall with antique furniture and
the Meeting room for the House of Scientists’ Council.
There is a cozy underground restaurant Art Maestro
(capacity 100 ppl) that would be a perfect place to relax
after your conference. The perfectly preserved elements
of the interior, remarkable conference halls, and cozy
restaurant make the former casino one of the most
beautiful options for your convention.

Lviv Religion History Museum is a cultural institution
where the history of international and national religions
and activities of various church organizations are
presented to visitors.
With one Conference Hall for 120 people, the museum
is located in the Dominican Monastery dating back to
the 14th–18th centuries. The monastery is attached to the
Dominican Church. It’s only 1-minute walk from Rynok
Square.
The conference room is a back room of the museum
that has an entrance to the museum’s court yard. The
building is a stone structure which keeps it cool and
fresh. On the way to the conference room you can view
unique collections, materials, and exhibits, which all
represent important artistic and historical value.

Museum offers a facility in the very city center in one
of the oldest buildings in Lviv. A remarkable conference
hall with a capacity of 100 people (200 m2) is situated in
the building of Ethnographic Museum. This is the oldest
museum in Ukraine. It opened its doors in 1951. The
museum presents a unique and outstanding collection
of traditional items of national culture, folk arts and
crafts of countries from Western, Central and Eastern
Europe. The current exhibition is unique in Central
and Eastern Europe, as it offers visitors to explore the
development of European decorative art over nearly
five centuries – from late Gothic until Art Deco style
and displays the best examples of this cultural heritage
saved by the museum. Here you can see cultural,
spiritual and everyday items of Ukrainian life, household
tools, national folk arts and crafts from the 19th –20th
centuries.

Lviv Philharmonic
Lviv Philharmonic was built in 1907 for the Musical
society of Galicia. These are unique premises with perfect
acoustics and all necessary devices. It is no coincidence
that “philharmonic society” from Greek means love to
harmony. The orchestra started to function as a regular
philharmonic in 1933. The conductors were Isak Pain and
Mykola Kolessa. The orchestra was reestablished after
WWII. The Symphony Orchestra of Lviv philharmonic
society received an academic title in 2006. The main
activity of Lviv philharmonic society is to conduct the
symphonic, chamber, jazz, pop concerts, to organize
musical festivals, literature and art activities, meetings
and exhibitions.

This Neo-Renaissance architectural treasure once
belonged to the powerful Potocki family, one of Central
Europe’s most influential ones. Potocki Palace features
three impressive halls adorned with marble fireplaces,
moldings and ornate mirrors. The biggest one is Mirror
Hall (capacity 80 people). The imposing 19th-century
building is commonly known as a wedding palace since
it once served as a civil registry office and it’s still a
popular venue for weddings and special events.
During last years many political, cultural and diplomatic
events were held here: the meeting of presidents of
Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Austria and Slovakia. Also
here were held presentations of UEFA projects (with
participation of Michel Platini), UNESCO, ICOM, ICOMOS,
International Olympic Committee.
Today Potocki Palace is a branch of the Lviv Art Gallery
with exhibits of European paintings from the 14th – 18th
centuries.

State Museum of Natural History
The State Museum of Natural History was opened for
the visitors in 1870 and holds a museum, research and
educational activities. The museum was built at the turn
of the 18th – 19th centuries and has the oldest in Europe
mechanical elevator.
The Museum is located 100 m from Rynok Square which
makes it an easily accessible central location next to a
number of hotels. The conference room is located on the
attic of the museum. It is spacious and has the coffee
break space. On your way to the conference room you
will pass some exhibition halls of the museum. There is
also a cosy courtyard where participants could breathe
some fresh air and relax during a break.

the 5th anniversary of Ukrainian Independence. With

for the Trade Union of Railway Workers as a project
of Polish architect – Romuald Miller and realized by
Lviv architect – Henryh Zaremba. Nowadays it is an
architectural monument.
A large hall of the building used to be a cinema Roxy
with 800 persons capacity. They say that the name Roxy
is related to a famous cinema in New York. On 14–15
May 1999 the Sixth Leaders Meeting of Central and

Lychakiv cemetery
Rynok Square was the center of political, social, cultural
and commercial life of the city for 500 years. There are
44 buildings which represent different styles with the
City Hall in the middle. In 1998 the Rynok Square, was
recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Lychakiv cemetery is a historical state museum. It is one
of the oldest cemeteries in Europe created in 1787, a
necropolis of intelligentsia from all over Europe. Among
notable people buried here are: Stefan Banach, Zygmund
Gorgolewski, Ivan Franko, Solomiya Krushelnytska and
many others.
Potocki Palace

Potocki Palace is a majestic edifice in French Neorenaissance
style of late 19th century, designed by French architect
Louis d’Auvergne (1880). Today the Palace is a part of Lviv
National Art Gallery. European art of 14th–18th centuries
is represented here by the best works from the Gallery’s
collection.
The first church in Lviv was built over 700 years ago. Now
in Lviv there are about 120 churches, many monasteries
and chapels. It is the only city in Ukraine with such a big

The “Golden Lion” Theatre Festival is no amateur

In the evening the Opera House square becomes a

Castles around Lviv
Olesko Castle
Olesko Castle is probably the most famous castle
of Lviv region, restored from a complete ruin. It has
been a witness of the history of the region for more
than six centuries.
The castle was first mentioned in manuscripts in
1327. Its location on the border of Lithuania and
Poland resulted in a constant struggle for it and a
frequent change of ownership.
Olesko castle is well known not only in Ukrainian
but also in Polish history because of the fact that
King of Poland Jan III Sobieski was born there.
During his reign the castle received the status of a
royal residence.
In its subsequent history Olesko castle repeatedly
suffered from destruction.
The active restoration of the castle began only in
the 70s of the last century.
Nowadays it belongs to Lviv Art Gallery and
the castle is considered as its department. Its
exhibition includes more than 1500 items, such as
the unique icon collection from 15th–18th centuries,
the biggest wood sculpture collection of 14th–19th
centuries, including Pinsel’s works, tapestries and
furniture collection and paintings.
The stone castle was founded in 1635 by Crown
Hetman Stanislaw Konetspolskiy at the place of the
old fortifications belonging to the Pidhoretski family.
The park of Pidhirtsi belongs to the monuments of
a landscape art of national importance.
The castle itself was designed by a famous architect
Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan in the middle of
16th century. The function of the castle is noted in
a Latin inscription at the entrance to it: ‘‘Victory
is the crown of martial efforts. Victory is triumph.
Triumph is rest’’. It is for the rest of the crown
hetman the castle in Pidhirtsy was built. Many of
the the European monarchs had been to the castle.
Polish King Wladyslaw IV and Jan III Sobieski, the
Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, the German Kaiser
Wilhelm were among them.
In 1940 the State Museum was founded in the
castle, the collection of which was robbed by Nazis.
After the war, the structure of the castle was under
the disposal the Ministry of Health, and was turned
into a tuberculosis hospital afterwards while the
remaining works of art were given to the Lviv Art
Gallery.
Today there is a museum in the castle and
restoration work is carried out there.
Zolochiv Castle

Pidhirtsi Castle
Zolochiv Castle is one of the most important
monuments of defense architecture on the
territory of Galicia.
In 1634-1636 it was built by James Sobieski, who
was father to John Sobieski – the Polish King. In
1686 by order of King Jan III Sobieski the castle was
renovated and decorated with works of art. Thus,
a beautiful Renaissance ensemble of the castle is
created by the Entrance Tower, the Chinese palace
as well as the large palace residence building.

Nevertheless, the castle has remained without
substantial losses until today.
At the courtyard of Zolochiv Castle the Grand
Palace there is an exposition of the seventeenth
century interiors and historical halls. The fad of the
eighteenth century - the Chinese Palace which is
one of the few examples of oriental architecture on
Ukrainian land is also preserved perfectly. Today,
the exhibition of oriental culture (art of Japan,
China , India, Egypt) is situated there.
Zhovkva Castle
It is believed that the strengthening Svirzh castle
was conducted by a famous fortress architect,
general of artillery Paul Hrodzytskyy.
Despite its prime location for the defense (castle
is situated on Mount Belz and was surrounded
by impenetrable marshes, ponds, ditches and
composite bridge at the foot of the walls) the
palace style of its architecture could hardly have
a serious defensive value. It is known that during
the Ukrainian-Polish War of 1648–1654 the castle
was gained by Cossack troops several times and in
1648 it was burned by the Tatars.
Old Village Castle
The architectural style of the castle built in 15941606 is the interweaving of the Renaissance and
Baroque styles. King Jan III Sobieski liked Zhovkva
Castle a lot and the building of the castle therefore
served as the residence of King Jan.
In 1648 the castle was attacked by Cossacks, but
after a large ransom the building remained intact.
In 1655, when the attack was repeated, Zhovkva
Castle was captured again.
At the beginning of the 18th century the castle
served as the residence for King Peter I, also
visited by Ukrainian Cossacs Hetman Ivan Mazepa.
Today, at least half of the Zhovkva Castle building
needs restoration. The other half of the building is
operated as a department of Lviv Art Gallery.
Svirzh Castle
Old Village Castle is one of the largest castles in
Ukraine which covers about 2 acres of area. It can
also be called the strongest castle of Lviv, as it faced
numerous enemy attacks remained unharmed
after battles.
The castle was built in 1589. It had suffered from
numerous military attacks and remained unharmed
but in 1648, when it was attacked by Cossacks
it was devastated. The following year the castle
was restored. When in 1654 the army of Bohdan
Khmelnytsky planned to attack Lviv it didn’t dare
to attack the Old Village fortress. In 1672 the Turks
attacked castles moving from one to another, but
they didn’t manage to get the castle as the fortress
was so powerful and strong.
By 2015 the castle is to be restored and become a
tourist and entertainment center.

The early references about the castle are mentioned
in the archives of 1530, when it belonged to noble
family of Svirzhsky. But the current look of the
castle started to form in the middle of 17th century,
since the ownership of Count Alexander Tsetnera.
