style and atmosphere, from the vibrant and trendy fashion and cuisine found along Ponsonby Road to the
breath-taking native bush and beaches of the West Coast. Spend the day exploring the city or relaxing

from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean. Absorb the area’s history and admire the magnificent
traditional Maori carvings. Then walk in the regenerating rainforest where your experienced guide will
explain about the local flora and fauna with giant tree ferns growing alongside picturesque streams.
Unwind by a spectacular cascading waterfall or swim beneath it. Venture on to an awe-inspiring west
coast beach where you can stroll along the soft black sand and feel the clear ocean breeze. A kiwi-style
picnic lunch is provided at a scenic location. Your eco-tour ends in an area of untamed original rainforest
where mature 1,000 year old kauri trees tower over the unique flora and fauna that has developed
separately from the rest of the world for millions of years. This part of the rainforest is particularly rich in
bird life thanks to a successful programme to eradicate pests. A reasonable level of fitness is required as
the total distance walked on the day is approximately 10km (6 miles), this is split up into several walks
of up to 1 hour duration each.

Auckland to Waipoua Forest
The drive north to Waipoua Forest and the Kauri Coast takes you along the much less travelled West
Coast and around one of the worlds largest natural harbours, the Kaipara Harbour. The region was
worked by immigrant Dalmations who toiled to make a living from the gum fields. A visit to the Kauri
Museum at Matakohe tells the story of the hardships and pioneering spirit during the early days and of
the remarkable impact the kauri tree had on the region and the wider world - dont miss it. Waipoua
Forest covers around 15, 000 hectares and is the last remaining substantial volume of the magnificent
kauri forests that once covered much of the North Island. The original block of land was purchased from
local Maori in 1876 for European settlement and in 1906 some of this was set aside for forestry. During
the Second World War some milling was performed but after widespread opposition the area was set
aside in 1952 as a forest sanctuary. Today there are many walks and paths to explore. The most visited
tree in the park is Tane Mahuta or the lord of the forest. This gigantic tree is just a 5 minute walk from
the road and is over 1000 years old.
Note - this route takes you via the Northern Gateway toll road. This costs NZ$2.20 each way for a car.
You can prepay this toll at the booths clearly signposted on the northern highway. If you miss the booths
you can also pay by logging onto www.tollroad.govt.nz .

You will be collected from your accommodation at 5pm.
Your Maori guide will brief you on the protocols for your visit to the mighty Waipoua Forest. Stepping into
our special world you will be walking under the same stars that guided our ancestor Kupe from legendary
Hawaiiki to New Zealand. The highlight of the tour will be your meeting with 'The Lord of the Forest' - the
giant Tane Mahuta! Your guide will formally greet the silent giant and then suddenly you stand dwarfed
before his Lordship as the darkness closes in. His gnarled ancient limbs seem to grasp at the stars and
the forest is silent but for the dim chatter of its night creatures.

and whale watching in the Bay. You’ll also travel through the iconic Hole in the Rock (weather
permitting) before stopping at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island for lunch or afternoon tea and a

Discover the Bays cruises. Waitangi, just a few kilometres north of Paihia is considered the most
important historical site of modern New Zealand. It was here that the Treaty of Waitangi was prepared
and signed between the Crown and Maori. The visitor centre tells its ongoing story and is set in beautiful
gardens and grounds, where you can also experience a traditional Maori cultural performance. The
peaceful village of Russell is located on the other side of the bay and is full of history and stories from its
days as the 'hell hole of the Pacific'. If it weren't for the bullet holes in the historic buildings, it would be
hard to imagine that this idyllic location was ever the site of battles. From the Bay of Islands you can
also venture to the top of New Zealand on a day trip. The Dune Rider will take you along 90 Mile Beach
to Cape Reinga, where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. Spiritually significant to Maori who

Rotorua sits right in the centre of the world's most volcanically active region and this is highly evident
through the smell of sulphur. No visit to Rotorua would be complete without visiting one of the many

relaxing thermal experience, you can't go past the Polynesian Spa, either soak in their mineral pools or

and is still one the most active volcanoes in the world. Volcanic Air Safaris offer scenic flights to the

Explore Wellington City, Middle Earth Film Locations Half Day Tour
Explore Wellington City
New Zealand's capital, Wellington, sits on a large natural harbour at the bottom of the North Island. This
proximity to Cook Strait which separates the two islands is responsible for the nickname "Windy
Wellington" due to the strong winds whipped up in the Strait that occasionally batter the city. Despite
the sometimes wild weather Wellington is a beautiful city to explore. The mix of modern high rise,
colonial historic and wonderful timber villas that cling to the hillsides give the city a true diversity and a
fitting mix for a capital with a rich history. Parliament’s executive offices are an iconic Wellington
landmark and the nickname "The Beehive" is very apt. Wellington is also home to a selection of great
museums such as Te Papa - New Zealand's national museum (not to be missed), The National Library
and the Museum of Wellington City and Sea. For great views of the city and the harbour take the Cable
Car from Lambton Quay up into the hills of Kelburn, 130 metres above the city. The ride finishes at the
botanic gardens, a 26 hectare park with rose gardens, exotic trees and native forest displays. Wellington
is home to a range of quirky shopping and creative theatres and also some of most awarded fine dining
restaurants in New Zealand. The Walking Gourmet Food Tour will introduce you to the local flavours of
the city and help uncover the delights of this compact city. A great way to see the highlights is on a Flat
Earth half day sightseeing tour. Wellington also featured in the Lord of the Rings movies, the Lord of the
Rings tour will take you to the key filming locations in the region and you can visit Weta Cave for a
glimpse behind the scenes. A Seal Coast Safari or Zealandia Night Tour will get you up close to the local
wildlife or venture further afield to the windswept and striking Cape Palliser coastline home to the largest
New Zealand fur seal colony. Wellington is also perfectly placed to explore the boutique wine growing
area of Martinborough for a day.

Explore Picton
Picton is a port town and its here that the Interislander ferries arrive and depart. The town centre is
quite small with plenty of shops and cafes and the waterfront area is a very pleasant place to spend a
few hours watching the activity of the ships. The Edwin Fox Maritime Centre on the wharf is worth a visit
with the star attraction being the vessel the Edwin Fox, reputably the 9th oldest ship in the world. The
hills to the west of Picton are the start of Queen Charlotte Drive, a very picturesque road to Havelock and
Nelson that winds its way along the shores of the sounds.

Picton to Kaikoura
Driving distance and time: 143 kms / 89 miles : 1.9 hours
Picton to Kaikoura
From Picton you head south on state Highway 1 towards Blenheim which sits right at the heart of the
New Zealand's largest wine producing region, Marlborough. Ideally located to enjoy an afternoon
sampling the local produce, the best way to do this is to take a guided wine tour with Sounds Connection
Wine Tours. Crossing the ‘dry hills’ of the Marlborough ranges you head towards one of the most
spectacular coastlines of the South Island, the Kaikoura Coast. The road hugs the shore for around 50
kilometres and offers many chances to view the native wildlife such as seabirds and New Zealand fur
seals. To the east is the turquoise of the South Pacific Ocean and to the west the towering Kaikoura
Ranges. Kaikoura Township is a bustling little place with many cafes, restaurants and shops but the main
reason for visiting here is the wildlife. Whale Watch Kaikoura is New Zealand's only marine-based whale
watching company offering visitors an exciting up-close encounter with the Giant Sperm Whale at all
times of the year. Kaikoura is New Zealand's world famous whale watching destination. Sperm Whales
can be seen here year-round while depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback
Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales. Another great Kaikoura activity is
Swimming with the Seals. Donning a wet suit you have the opportunity to interact with these inquisitive
creatures on their terms. Wings over Whales also offer tours from fixed wing aircraft to view the whales
and other marine creatures from 500 feet in the air.

Explore Kaikoura, Whale Watch Kaikoura
Explore Kaikoura
Kaikoura is renowned for its wildlife and this is the main draw card for visitors. The seas along the coast
offer a plentiful food supply for whales, seals and dolphins and these magnificent animals can be
observed all year round. Seals are the easiest animals to view with a colony at the tip of the peninsular
and many basking along the coast road. Whale Watch Kaikoura run a 4 hour excursion by boat to view
the marine wildlife and you will have around a 95% chance of spotting a whale. If you don't enjoy the
sea then Wings over Whales can also take you wildlife spotting on a 30 minute scenic flight. Another
great local activity is to swim with the resident seal population and Seal Swim Kaikoura operate both
land based and boat based trips. Of course there are many other great reasons to visit Kaikoura; the
township has a charming atmosphere with lots of small shops, cafes and restaurants and not to be
missed is a crayfish meal - the town’s signature dish. Historic Fyffe House located on Kaikoura Peninsula
provides a fascinating insight into the original settlers lives. Further along the peninsula you can enjoy
hiking, quad biking, mountain biking and golf to mention just a few activities. It’s definitely the scenery
that steals the show in Kaikoura, with some of the best coastal views in the country.

Reservation reference: 4567373
Check in for your Whale Watching tour at The Whaleway Station, Whaleway Station Road (well
signposted). Your Whale Watch check in time is 10am
Every Whale Watch tour is a unique experience and the sightings vary. Giant Sperm Whales are the stars
of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch tour may encounter New Zealand Fur
Seals, pods of Dusky Dolphins and the endangered Wandering Albatross. Depending on the season you
may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales.
Kaikoura often hosts the world's largest dolphin - the Orca - and is home to the world's smallest and
rarest - the Hector's. Kaikoura also attracts the largest concentration and variety of seabirds on mainland
New Zealand including 13 species of Albatross, 14 varieties of Petrels and 7 types of Shearwater.
The vessels used are designed specially for whale watching and the modern catamarans are equipped
with engines that minimise underwater noise and toilets that never pollute the sea. The main passenger
cabin is enclosed and large outside decks offer great viewing and photo opportunities. Spacious
air-conditioned interiors are fitted with comfortable seating while large plasma screens display awardwinning marine wildlife animations. Passenger numbers for each tour are kept well below the vessel
carrying capacity to ensure your tour experience remains a personal one.
You should reconfirm your Whale Watch tour the day prior or in the morning if you are taking
an afternoon tour. Sailings can be cancelled or postponed if sea conditions are not suitable.

Hanmer Springs to Christchurch
Driving distance and time: 122 kms / 76 miles : 1.6 hours
Hanmer Springs to Christchurch
The Waipara Valley is situated only 40 minutes drive north of Christchurch City. It is the fastest growing
wine region in New Zealand with around 80 vineyards in the Waipara Valley covering more than 1,200
hectares of plantings. Snuggled in the lee of the Teviotdale hills that provide protection from cool
easterly winds but open to warming north west winds. The valley has three general sites, valley floor, hill
slopes or river terraces. The soil types include; gravely deposits on flats and terraces in the central and
west of the valley, limestone derived clays on hillsides and valley floor to the eastern side and gravely
loams over alluvial subsoil in the southern part of the region. The north facing moderately sloping terrain
provides an ideal sun trap for fruiting vines. This gives each vineyard unique characters that contribute
to a range of wine styles that demand a visit to each winery to fully appreciate Waipara. The “Terroir”
combined with the long hot autumn period helps produce unique richer, spicier Pinot Noirs and Rieslings
– regional specialties. Other varieties of note include Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Another great local attraction is The Weka Pass Railway. This historic rural railway uses both vintage
steam and diesel-electric locomotives on 12.8 km of scenic line through the unique limestone beauty of
the Weka Pass out of Waipara, where superior weather patterns provide crystal clear air and high
sunshine hours. Open most Sundays and public holidays during the summer months. Arriving into
Christchurch City puts you close to the airport and the International Antarctic Centre and a visit is highly
recommended. Here you can get as close to experiencing life on the frozen continent without actually
visiting plus see New Zealand little blue penguins and ride in a Haaglund Tracked vehicle.

Christchurch to Mt. Cook National Park
Driving distance and time: 329 kms / 204 miles : 4.9 hours
Christchurch to Mt. Cook National Park
Today you head into the heart of the South Island. Crossing the vast Canterbury Plains along the inland
scenic route, Geraldine offers an ideal stop before you head into the Mackenzie Country. Ascending
Burkes Pass, you'll enter New Zealand's high country. The picturesque town of Lake Tekapo, is the first
of the large Southern Lakes on your journey. Enjoy the magnificent views from the lake shore or for an
even better view take a scenic flight. On arriving at Lake Pukaki, you'll be rewarded with spectacular
views of Mt Cook, towering over the lake. Continue along the lake as it guides you to your destination,
Mt. Cook Village. There are many ways to enjoy Mt Cook National Park, by ski plane or helicopter with a
glacier landing, kayaking on a glacial lake or by walking one of the many tracks. At The Hermitage Hotel
the Sir Edmund Hillary Centre is a must see.
Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo is New Zealand's highest large lake and its incredible turquoise colour astounds many
visitors. The amazing colour of the water is created by the fine rock particles that are suspended in the
glacier fed waters and these reflect the light. One of the most popular landmarks in this region is the
Church of the Good Shepherd. This pretty stone building was dedicated in 1935 and must be one of the
most photographed in New Zealand. Nearby a bronze statue of a sheepdog pays tribute to the invaluable
contribution the animals have made to working the mountain country. Just a few kilometres west of Lake
Tekapo is Mt. John and here you will find the Canterbury University observatory. A drive to the top of the
hill gives spectacular views of the Southern Alps, the lakes and the high country. Tours of the
observatory are also available. Lake Alexandrina is just a little further and this wildlife reserve is home to
many birds and as no motorised craft are permitted on either Lake McGregor or Lake Alexandrina its a
very peaceful place. Air Safaris operate fantastic scenic flights over the lakes, Mt. Cook National Park and
the West Coast glaciers including Fox Glacier and Franz Josef. Tekapo is also a great place to enjoy a
guided horse trek with Mackenzie Alpine Horse Trekking or a spot of fishing or lunch on the pristine lake
with Cruise Tekapo.
Mt. Cook National Park
Lake Pukaki is just another 30 minutes drive from Lake Tekapo and as you approach the lake you are
often rewarded with spectacular views the full length of the lake and into Mt. Cook National Park. At
3754 metres Aoraki Mt. Cook is New Zealand highest mountain and the peak can often be seen from the
visitor centre at the southern end of Lake Pukaki. Mt. Cook National Park offers the visitor a huge range
of activities. Mt. Cook Ski Planes operate scenic flights that include a unique ski landing on a glacier. At
around 15 kilometres long the Tasman Glacier is New Zealand's longest and a Glacier Explorers tour will
show you these unique features. There are many short hikes in and around the park and these are well
marked and there is something for almost every ability. The Hermitage Hotel complex offers fine dining,
cafes a bar and its newest addition is the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre showcasing the regions
contribution to pioneering the sport of mountain climbing and of course Sir Ed's incredible achievements
and his dedication to helping others around the world.

Approximately 55 minutes duration including 10 minute glacier landing. This is the best flight to view the
unbelievable scenery of the Westland and Aoraki Mount Cook National Parks. Excellent views of Aoraki
Mount Cook, Mt Tasman, the Fox, Franz Josef and Tasman Glaciers. A landing on one of the three main
glaciers is included to enjoy this scenery up close. Mount Cook Ski Planes offer the most spectacular
alpine scenic flight in the world. Their aircraft take you from Aoraki Mount Cook Airport directly into the
heart of the Southern Alps including Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak at over 3750m and
the Tasman Glacier, one of the longest glaciers in the world. After an awe inspiring flight through
breathtaking scenery your ski equipped aircraft lands on one of the glaciers in the Mount Cook or
Westland National Park, the engine is stopped, and you alight onto the glacier where climbers would take
hours or days to reach. With the engine shut down you are able to experience the "natural quiet" of the
mountains, broken only by the occasional avalanche or sounds from the glacier as it makes its way down
the mountain. Upon re-embarking an even more spectacular take off from the snow covered glacier is
followed by the return flight to base hugging the other side of the valley with your pilot identifying points
of interest including climber huts, icefalls, peaks, and occasional ski tourers and climbers, before you
land back at your point of departure.

Explore Franz Josef Glacier
The glacier is the main attraction in Franz Josef and what makes it such a unique feature is that this
12km glacier flows down through lush temperate rainforest, finishing just 300 meters above sea level.
You can walk along the valley floor to the glacier’s terminal face without a guide, but you must take a
licensed tour to get any closer than 100 metres of the glacier. Franz Josef Glacier Guides have a great
choice of guided interpretive walks to and onto the glacier, including the new Ice Explorer tour and a
Heli-hike option where you fly onto the glacier to explore the ice flows, caves and crevasses. Other
scenic flights with short glacier landings are available with The Helicopter Line. The township, although
small, has a lively atmosphere during its busy seasons and there is plenty of choice for dining out and to
help you wind down from the day's adventures a soak in the glacier hot pools is well recommended.
