SPORTS DAY
3rd EDITION
JAN. - Feb. 2016
ANOTHER ONE OF OUR ECO-ACTIONS IN SDS!
Saying “YES” to “Laudato si,” Pope Francis’ call to care for nature
and our planet, our 10th grade students began a project of
labeling our beautiful trees on campus with their scientific and
common name. By doing this, we are able to see God’s creation
and learn more about the world around us! As our Pope says,¨Saint Francis asks us to recognize nature as a marvelous book in
which God reflects his grandiose mercy.” Thank you 10thgraders

Catacombs and even walked on the cathedral´s roof where
they had a great view of the colonial city. They also visited the
not-to-be-missed Home-Museum of our greatest poet, Ruben
Dario. To end this educational fieldtrip, the seniors went to the
Museum of Legends and Traditions which caused some of our
seniors not to be able to sleep well that night. Although they
were exhausted at the end of the trip, they were able to make

100 YEARS SINCE OUR GREATEST POET’S
PASS INTO ETERNITY.
Different cultural activities were held in SDS to commemorate
Ruben Dario´s pass into eternity, which took place on February
6th, 1916. Elementary and Middle School students recited and
acted out poems that were very appealing because of their
vivid imagery and melodious words. Students recited poems
such as: Del Trópico, Campoamor, A Margarita Debayle, Caupolicán, Nicaragua, Venus. They also created classroom bulletin-boards to depict relevant aspects of Dario´s talented life,
such as his life as a news reporter, The Father of Modernism, The
Prince of Spanish Literature, and Ruben Dario´s stories about
society. High School students also honored our poet with a
Debate Contest in which topics of national concern were discussed. All of these cultural activities in school certainly enhance our
students´ perception towards the literary work of Ruben Dario, our
greatest symbol of national pride.
FAMILY DAY
On February 22ndwe celebrated Family Day. Our students
were very excited about spending a beautiful day with their
family and teachers. First, they entertained their parents in their
classrooms with a demonstration of their artistic talents of
singing, dancing, reciting poems, and playing instruments. Next,
they all shared a delicious lunch which was organized by parents. Lastly, all families had a great time playing our traditional
Bingo, which caused many families to leave with a great smile
as they went home with bountiful baskets of products donated
by our parents´ companies and other school supplying companies. Thank you so much to all of the families for making us
feel very happy on that special day. “THE LOVE OF A FAMILY
IS LIFE´S GREATEST BLESSING".

MATH IS FUN!
In February, we all had fun in our
traditional Math Day: a day full
of thought-provoking challenges that students couldn’t get
enough of. In Elementary, our
students participated in games
among classmates while in
Middle School and High
School, mixed-grade teams
participated in competitions
where students worked together
to solve difficult math problems.
We congratulate all students
for participating with enthusiasm
and deepening their knowledge in the world of mathematics.
We thank our teachers for designing such entertaining math
activities.
VALENTINE´S
DAY IN SDS!
What an enjoyable day in SDS, when
friendship is celebrated and where
students can demonstrate how much
they care for their classmates. Roses,
chocolates, candies, cards, and
songs were seen all over the school,

PROUD OF OUR SENIOR

We are very proud of our seniors
who have already been admitted to more than one university
to which they have applied to in
the United States, and have
also received good scholarship
offerings. These students are:
AUGUSTA JEREZ ARGUELLO,
MELISSA MORALES ZELEDON,
XOSHELT SEVILLA, NUSA SOLORZANO
and
GABRIEL

that have offered them admission and scholarships are: Rochester Institute of Technology,
Colorado State University, Hofstra University, La Salle University,
University of Colorado Boulder,
and St. Leo University.
UNIVERSITY FAIR
AT SDS
High School students had their
annual University Fair on Feb.
26th. This time, we had the
opportunity to listen to the presentation of the academic program being offered at four
local universities (UCA, UAM,
KEISER and THOMAS MORE)
and two international universities (UNIVERSIDAD EUROPEA
DEL ATLANTICO and JOHN
CABOT UNIVERSITY IN ROME).
This is a good moment for
students to ask many good
questions that will help them in
their process of defining their
future field of study as well as
choosing where they want to
pursue their studies.
Our
students also have the opportunity to listen to university
representatives
that
are
frequently visiting us in Nicaragua.

CATECHISM
Third-grade students are becoming more and more excited as they
are progressing in their preparation for their First Communion. Their
catechism classes are held every day of the week: the first activity they
participate in first thing in the morning. Similarly, our Ninth-grade
students are also preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation
with catechism classes during their Faith Education periods. The
sacraments are means of receiving God´s grace to strengthen our
spiritual life and live in a closer relationship with Jesus.
SPELLING BEE
Our Elementary students participated in a Spelling Bee Competition. It was a tough competition and students did a great job studying their words. We are very proud of all the participants who
showed great enthusiasm and displayed their skills. During the completion, our emotions kept rising as some of the competitors were
tied for a while, until, finally, one of them could be declared a winner.
These were the participants and winners:

CAREER DAY
Our High School students had Career Day on January 29th. They
had the privilege of listening to Dra. Miriam Fernández, Anesthesiologist; Ms. Martha Sánchez, Architect; and Mr. Enrique Zamora, Financial Executive. Students participate in a very productive session in
which our students asked questions concerning these fields of study.
The professionals dedicated part of their busy schedules to share
their personal experience in choosing their careers and their present
work environment, along with good recommendations for the
students. We are very grateful to these young professionals for their
collaboration in our Academic Counseling Program and are very
pleased and proud to have among them our alumni, Enrique
Zamora.
