BY t h e 1 4 t h t i t was obvious t h a t t h e storm was s . t i l l a h u r r i c a n e and that i t had changed i t s c o u r s e once a g a i n and was now headed i n t h e d i r e c t i o n of t h e United S t a t e s . I A t t h i s t i m e , i t a p p e a r e d q u i t e d e f i n i t e t h a t t h e f u t u r e P a t h o f t h i s v i g o r o u s and severe storm *as g o i n g t o be i n f l u e n c e d b o t h by t h e Presence of a n a r e a of h i g h b a r o m e t r i c p r e s s u r e o v e r t h e N~~~~ and by a deepening t r o u g h of low p r e s s u r e i n t h e w e s t e r n p a r t of t h e Country. which extended from the surfa c e t o s e v e r a l thousands of f e e t i n t o t h e a i r above t h e s u r f a c e . A f t e r moving i n l a n d near t h e b o r d e r of t h e two Carel i n a s between 9 and 1 0 a.m. s h e sped through North C a r o l i n a and on i n t o V i r g i n i a by e a r l y afternoon of t h e 1 5 t h . M a i n t a i n i n g h e r f u l l h u r r i c a n e f o r c e , s h e Picked UP speed d u r i n g t h e a f t e r n o o n , passed washingt o n , D.C. between 5 and 6 p.m. and r e a c h e d t h e s o u t h e r n d g e of Pennsylvania between 6 and 7 P.m. From t h e r e s h e p r a c t i c a l l y g a l l o p e d a c r o s s Pennsylvania and N e w York S t a t e , r o a r e d a c r o s s Lake O n t a r i o shortly 2 f t e r 9 p.m. and smashed i n t o Canada. Wind s p e e d of 90 t o 100 m i l e s per h o u r , and h i g h e r i n Some P l a c e s , w e r e r e c o r d e d a t weather O f f i c e s a l l a l o n g t h e p a t h and e s p e c i a l l y j u s t t o t h e east t h e r e o f w i t h some p l a c e s having t h e highest wind e v e r r e c o r d e d . The loss of l i f e d u r i n g , and a s a r e s u l t of t h i s storm r a n o v e r two hundred,and prope r t y damage was widespread i n a two hundred m i l e p a t h from t h e C a r o l i n a s t o Canada and t h e t o t a l amount w i l l r u n i n t o many, many m i l l i o n s when it i s f i n a l l y computed. M i l i t a r y r e c o n n a i s s a n c e p l a n e s tracked ”Hazel” t h r o u g h o u t h e r l i f e , and on more t h a n one o c c a s i o n f l e w i n t o t h e storm’s c e n t e r t o o b t a i n essent i a l i n f o r m a t i o n . Through t h e s e e f f o r t s , and from t h e h e l p r e c e i v e d from t h e r e p o r t s s e n t i n by comerc i a l s h i p s p l y i n g t h e w a t e r s n e a r t h e s t o r m , t h e Weather Bureau Was a i d e d t o a very g r e a t e x t e n t in its j o b of f o r e c a s t i n g t h e f u t u r e c o u r s e of t h e h u r r i c a n e . The p u b l i c i t y g i v e n t o t h e approach of t h i s s e v e r e s t o r m by a l l news a g e n c i e s - newspaper, r a d i o and TV s t a t i o n s , e t c . , a s well a s t h r o u g h t h e r e g u l a r c h a n n e l s Of d i s s e m i n a t i o n used by t h e weather Bureau, served welli n k e e p i n g t h e p u b l i c informed and undoubtedly saved l i v e 9 and reduced P r o p e r t y damage. ~n N e w York C i t y , most a l l of t h e newspapers and news wire s e r v i c e s had r e p o r t e r s s t a t i o n e d i n t h e Weather B~~~~~ O f f i c e a t t h e B a t t e r y or were i n c l o s e c o n t a c t o t h e r w i s e . Numerous g u s t s of o v e r 70 miles p e r hour were obs e r v e d a t t h e Weather Bureau O f f i c e a t t h e B a t t e r y w i t h t h e h i g h e s t v e l o c i t y of 113 miles p e r h o u r , f o r t h e f a s t e s t mile, o c c u r r i n g a t 7:49 p.m. T h i s v e l o c i t y is h i g h e r t h a n t h a t r e p o r t e d by most o t h e r r e p o r t i n g s t a t i o n s around t h i s a r e a b u t c o n s i s t e n t w i t h t h e p a t t e r n e s p e c i a l l y s i n c e t h e anemometer is a t a n e l e v a t i o n of 450 f e e t above s e a l e v e l w i t h wide open exposure t o s o u t h e a s t winds. T h i s is t h e h i g h e s t wind v e l o c i t y r e c o r d e d s i n c e weather o b s e r v a t i o n s w e r e s t a r t e d b y t h e Weather Bureau i n N e w York C i t y i n 1871. The p r e v i o u s h i g h r e c o r d f o r t h e f a s t e s t mile Was 99 miles p e r hour o c c u r r i n g w i t h t h e passage of t h e 1944 h u r r i c a n e o n September 1 4 t h . The s p e e d i n g up of t h e forward motion of t h i s storm p r e v e n t e d t h e t i d e s from d e v e l o p i n g t o a n y t h i n g e x c e p t i o n a l S i n c e t h e s t r o n g winds o c c u r r e d about two hours b e f o r e h i g h - t i d e time. T i d e s were above normal, however, i n most a l l l o c a l i t i e s around t h e M e t r o p o l i t a n a r e a d u r i n g t h e morning and v e n i n g high t i d e p e r i o d s . With a storm of t h i s t y p e , i t was n a t u r a l t h a t t h e amount Of damage was r e l a t e d t o t h e d i s t a n c e from t h e c e n t e r of t h e s t o r m and i n t h e M e t r o p o l i t a n a r e a , t h e g r e a t e s t amount Of damage was r e p o r t e d from n o r t h e r n N e w Jersey, a c o n s i d e r a b l e amount i n N e w York C i t y p r o p e r and t h e n t a p e r i n g o f f t o v e r y l i t t l e i n S u f f o l k County on Long I s l a n d .
