PRCA AWARDS Veteran rodeo clown and barrelman Quail Dobbs, who passed away in January 2014, was honored posthumously with the 2014 Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award for PRCA contract personnel. Photo by Fred Nyulassy 2014 Pendleton Whisky Let ’er Buck Stock of the Year Awards Each year, the top ProRodeo cowboys in each roughstock event vote for the top bucking horses and bulls – the animal athletes with whom they contend in the arena and whose performance is worth half their own scores. Ballots go out every Sept. 1, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet each December just before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and/or breeding programs, feed and medical care for their bucking stock for years, fostering the animals’ growth and development until they are ready to be tested in the arena for the bucking instinct and physical abilities that may make them champions in their own right. In 2010, Pendleton Whisky expanded its ProRodeo involvement by sponsoring the stock awards, which are now known as the Pendleton Whisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards. Pendleton Whisky provides cash prizes for the top three animals in each event and funds the stipends for stock contractors who provide bucking stock for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The 2014 Pendleton Whisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards went to: Bareback Horses Saddle Broncs Bulls 1. Dirty Jacket, Pete Carr Pro 1. Medicine Woman, Frontier 1. The Pete Carr Pro Rodeo horse’s twin 91-point outs came with Richmond Champion aboard at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days in August 2014 and Steven Dent in Stephenville, Texas, in September. That highly regarded Cheyenne out with Champion, right, was a bit surprising, noted Carr. “He had been off for almost six months,” Carr said. “I was kind of holding my breath when we bucked him at Cheyenne because you never know how they’re going to come back, but it was probably one of the best trips he’s ever had. He just likes his job. He was born to buck. When it’s time to go to the rodeo and time to go to work, his ears go up and he prances. He’s never really had a bad day – he’s up off the ground and kicks over his head. He’s a rider-friendly horse and lets the guys show off their riding ability. He scores well with the judges, and he lets the guys score well, too.” PRORODEO AWARDS Stock of the Year Best saddle bronc 2014 PRCA ProRodeo photo by Larry Smith Medicine Woman Frontier Rodeo There was only one 92-point saddle bronc ride in the 2014 regular season, and it belonged to Frontier Rodeo mare Medicine Woman under six-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Wade Sundell in Dodge City, Kan. At right, Heith DeMoss rode Medicine Woman for 84.5 points at the 2013 Wrangler NFR, the horse’s fifth consecutive trip to Las Vegas; in 2014, the mare bucked off Cole Elshere and two-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Chad Ferley. This is Medicine Woman’s third top award; she was Saddle Bronc of the Year in 2011 and was also named top saddle bronc at the Wrangler NFR the year before that. Jerry Nelson, owner of Frontier Rodeo, was thrilled by his mare’s achievements, describing her as an honest bucker. “She doesn’t do nothing nasty, nothing dirty. She’s the kind of horse guys want to get on – you ride her right, you’ll win first place.” Nelson was also quick to note that Medicine Woman’s breeding is a huge factor in her success: “Pretty much everything I’m raising goes back to horses I bought from Harry Vold Rodeo, including my stud Big Medicine, and Mr. Harry Vold gets most of the credit.” Best bucking bull 2014 PRCA PRCA AWARDS AWARDS Summit Pro Rodeo Michigan has always been known for its dairy industry, but now another native son of the bovine variety has drawn national attention. Despite his Western name, Summit Pro Rodeo bought Cross the Wyoming Line from an Internet bull-breeding company; the bull was raised in Michigan by John Tiemeyer. Over the regular 2014 season, Cross the Wyoming line had a 95.83 percent buckoff rate; at the 2014 Wrangler NFR – his first – he bucked off soon-to-be-crowned 2014 World Champion Bull Rider Sage Kimzey in the first round and Jordan Spears in the ninth. Longtime PRCA stock contractor Hal Burns, one of the owners of Summit Pro Rodeo, is a big fan of the 5-year-old bull. “He’s a big-time bucker,” Burns said. “He was so good at Omaha (Neb.) and Ellensburg (Wash.) late in the year. The bull is just so consistent, and bucks so hard. Like any athlete today, it’s about strength and speed, and he has them both. He carries so much speed and is so strong.” Brennon Eldred, right, was an earlier victim of the bull; he was bucked off at the Wrangler Champions Challenge in Omaha in September 2014. 2015 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall Cross the Wyoming Line 613 Stock of the Year, 1956-2014 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 From 1956-73, only one top bucking horse was named each year. In 2014, the Remuda Award for best pen of bucking horses brought to PRCA rodeos went to Sparky and Marlene Dreesen’s J Bar J, and the committee recognized for assembling the best pen of bucking horses was the Farm-City Pro Rodeo in Hermiston, Ore. 2006 2007 2008 2009 Stace Smith (stock contractor) Stace Smith (stock contractor) Keith Martin and the San Antonio Stock Sale and Rodeo (event) Bud Kerby (stock contractor) Keith Martin and the San Antonio Stock Sale and Rodeo (event) Beutler & Son Rodeo (stock contractor) RodeoHouston (event) John Growney (stock contractor) Kitsap County Fair and Stampede, Bremerton, Wash. Dreesen says that when he drives up and honks his horn, his bucking horses come running right to the fence, hoping for grain or the chance to go to J Bar J’s next rodeo. David Bothum, left, and Dave Dickmeier of the Farm-City Pro Rodeo (Hermiston, Ore.) committee proudly display the 2014 Remuda Award for bringing the deepest field of top bucking horses to that rodeo; their pen included great horses from Calgary Stampede, Kesler Rodeo, Korkow Rodeos, Corey & Lange Rodeo, Kesler Championship Rodeo and Flying Diamond Rodeo. 2015 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE PRCA PRCA AWARDS AWARDS 2004 2005 617 2014 AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year Timed-event contestants will tell you that they are only as good as their horses enable them to be. Horses that collected the American Quarter Horse of the Year Award in 2014 performed consistently all year and put their riders in position to win – literally. All were first-time winners except Major, the Thomas Snedecor-owned steer roping horse who shared the 2013 honor but won the 2014 title outright. The 2014 AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year Awards went to: Steer wrestling 1. Landrys Cadillac (Cadillac), owner Frank Sterling Wallace 2. But around people, “he’s like a big ol’ pet,” says Hass. “He loves to be loved on.” And that’s not all he loves, says Hass. “Cadillac’s best quality is the consistency in how he works. He works day in and day out. He’s phenomenal and he loves his job – you can tell by the way he’s working. That makes it easier on the guy who is riding him.” PRORODEO AWARDS AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year (continued) Team Roping (heading) Photo by Fred McClanahan Jr. Brandon Beers accepted his second consecutive AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year Award in 2014, but for a different horse; he won with Lucy’s Fast Jewel in 2013 and El Tevo Cash “Tevo” in 2014. “I’m not sure my wife (Kimber) doesn’t love Tevo more than me,” he said wryly before the 2014 Wrangler NFR, where he and Tevo picked up another $36,779 to finish the season 10th in the world standings. “I’ve had him since he was 7 and he is like a pet. He is always getting into stuff, and he and I have had our disagreements. I rode two practice steers on him all year; you don’t have to practice on him because he does the same thing every time. He always scores and he runs as hard as he can – and he can fly. But he never changes – he’s the same in a small arena, big arena; it doesn’t matter. He’s always going to do the same thing, so I never have to wonder if my horse is going to work.” Team Roping (heeling) 2015 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE 619 PRCA PRCA AWARDS AWARDS PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall Brady Minor was thrilled Reyshines on Top “Rey” won the 2014 AQHA/PRCA award for heeling horses because he felt that Rey, 10, was the key to Minor’s having qualified for his sixth Wrangler NFR last year. “At home, he’s kind of like the angry boss,” Minor said. “When you go throw them hay, he wants to be the first one in the pile. He kind of fights with other horses and turns them off the hay. Going down the road last year, he got more seasoned; he runs hard and stops hard. I’m hoping he stays the same this year or gets a little bit better.” Tie-down Roping Photo by Bill Lawless Dualin Demon “Rambo” is owned by Hunter Herrin and his father, Bob Nunn. The 12-year-old horse’s 2014 win ended a five-year run in which the tie-down roping award had gone to either Pearl (2009, 2013) or Sweetness (2010-12). “Rambo is pretty laid back. When I was on the road the last couple of months of the year, he and Marty Yates’ horse Chicken became pretty big buddies,” Herrin said. “There’s not just one particular thing that makes Rambo special. He’s quick, he scores pretty good and he’s dang sure going to keep running. I got him in March 2012 and I rodeoed on him (in 2013), his first year. We didn’t click very well the first year we rodeoed. It took a little time, but now we just click.” Rambo’s other 2014 riders included Clint Robinson, who finished fourth in the regular season, and 2013 World Champion Shane Hanchey, who started riding him in August and finished ninth in the world. Steer Roping Wonders Cowboy Dan “Cowboy,” a 14-year old gray gelding by Wonders Pal out of Jackies Cowgirl, was named the 2014 AQHA Barrel Horse of the Year after carrying Kaley Bass to a No. 1 regular-season ranking in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association – and to her third Wrangler NFR. The Bass family bought the gelding when he was 3 years old, and he carried Kaley and her sister Kristen through junior high and high school rodeo. “Cowboy is a super easygoing horse – anyone could jump on him. I stick my 3-year-old niece Lyla on him; I trust him completely,” says Bass. “I know his runs and his style; I know how he’s going to work from the way he warms up. He always tries, even if he’s sore. He’s a real honest, consistent horse.” In 2013, steer roping horse Olee Roberto “Major,” owned by Thomas Snedecor and ridden by his son, Scott, tied for Steer Roping Horse of the Year with Dan Fisher’s horse named Woody. In 2014, Major won the honor outright. “Major likes to be left alone,” Scott Snedecor has said of his much-valued horse. “I don’t mess with him and I don’t practice on him much. If he works, it is a ‘Don’t fix it’ kind of deal. I leave him alone and leave him fat and feeling good, and get on him running him for money. That horse is just outstanding. He scores good and runs extremely hard, and he’s strong. His motor is wide open all the time.” Photo by Greg Westfall, courtesy of WPRA Photo by Greg Westfall Barrel Racing 620 PRORODEO AWARDS AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year, 1989-2014 Name Owner(s) 1989 TD SW TR (hd) TR (hl) SR WPRA/GB Doc’s Desperado Doc Mr. Ruby Clerk Flint’s Friend Dutch Scamper Paul Zanardi/Joe Parsons Doc Bee Quick Larry Ferguson Matt Tyler J.D. PRCA rodeos vote on the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of those thousands of volunteers. In 2014, that award went to Bill Stephens for his dedication to the Crossett (Ark.) Riding Club PRCA Rodeo. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among those five. The posthumous recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes and mentor to uncountable thousands of contestants and other people involved with the dozens of Barnes rodeos. The PRCA renamed the award in her honor in 2012. The 2014 recipient of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award was Quail Dobbs, who began his rodeo career riding bareback horses and bulls. He found his true calling in 1962 at a Minnesota rodeo when the stock contractor was short a barrelman. Dobbs volunteered and a star was born. Dobbs, a two-time PRCA Clown of the Year and four-time Coors Man in the Can, is one of only three men to work the National Finals Rodeo as both bullfighter and barrelman. He also worked as the Wrangler Bullfight Tour Finals barrelman seven times. Dobbs, who passed away in January 2014, counted the Barnes family -- including Cindy and John Barnes of Barnes PRCA Rodeo, right, and Marty Barnes, far left, and the Barnes brothers’ late parents, Bob and Donita – among his friends, having worked for Barnes PRCA Rodeo for many years, said Coley Dobbs. “This award was an honor, of course, because Dad had always talked about Donita Barnes and all the candidates who had been nominated for the award in the past – he thought very highly of all of them,” said Dobbs. “It was bittersweet to be accepting it for him, because I would have loved for him to accept it himself, but it was a great honor for him and our family.” 628 PRORODEO AWARDS PRCA Contract Personnel of the Year Secretary of the Year 1985 Cindy Moreno 1986 Mildred Farris 1987 Mildred Farris 1988 Mildred Farris 1989 Mildred Farris 1990 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1991 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1992 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1993 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1994 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1995 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1996 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1997 Vickie Shireman 1998 Sunni Deb Backstrom 1999 Mildred Farris 2000 Mildred Farris 2001 Mildred Farris 2002 Mildred Klingemann 2003 Sunni Deb Backstrom 2004 Mildred Farris 2005 Sunni Deb Backstrom 2006 Mildred Farris 2007 Haley Schneeberger 2008 Haley Schneeberger 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 Haley Schneeberger Haley Schneeberger Haley Schneeberger Haley Schneeberger Haley Schneeberger Haley Schneeberger Bullfighter of the Year 2004 Joe Baumgartner 2005 Joe Baumgartner 2006 Joe Baumgartner 2007 Joe Baumgartner 2008 Darrell Diefenbach 2009 Cory Wall 2010 Dusty Tuckness 2011 Dusty Tuckness 2012 Dusty Tuckness 2013 Dusty Tuckness 2014 Dusty Tuckness Clown of the Year 1977 Chuck Henson 1978 Quail Dobbs 1979 Jon Taylor 1980 Rick Young 1981 Tom Feller 1982 Wilbur Plaugher 1983 Leon Coffee 1984 Rick Chatman 1985 Rex Dunn 1986 Ted Kimzey 1987 Tom Feller 1988 Quail Dobbs 1989 Butch Lehmkuhler 1990 Butch Lehmkuhler 1991 Butch Lehmkuhler 1992 Lecile Harris 1993 Butch Lehmkuhler 1994 Lecile Harris 1995 Lecile Harris 1996 Lecile Harris 1997 Butch Lehmkuhler 1998 Flint Rasmussen 1999 Flint Rasmussen 2000 Flint Rasmussen 2001 Flint Rasmussen 2002 Flint Rasmussen 2003 Flint Rasmussen 2004 Flint Rasmussen 2005 Flint Rasmussen 2006 Keith Isley 2007 Keith Isley 2008 Keith Isley 2009 Keith Isley 2010 Keith Isley 2011 Keith Isley 2012 Justin Rumford 2013 Justin Rumford 2014 Justin Rumford 2015 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE PRCA PRCA AWARDS AWARDS Announcer of the Year 1982 Bob Tallman 1983 Hadley Barrett 1984 Randy Corley 1985 Hadley Barrett 1986 Clem McSpadden 1987 Bob Tallman 1988 S.J. “Zoop” Dove 1989 Hadley Barrett 1990 Randy Corley 1991 Randy Corley 1992 Randy Corley 1993 Randy Corley 1994 Randy Corley 1995 Randy Corley 1996 Randy Corley 1997 Bob Tallman 1998 Randy Corley 1999 Bob Tallman 2000 Bob Tallman 2001 Bob Tallman 2002 Hadley Barrett 2003 Randy Corley 2004 Bob Tallman 2005 Wayne Brooks 2006 Bob Tallman 2007 Boyd Polhamus 2008 Boyd Polhamus 2009 Boyd Polhamus 2010 Wayne Brooks 2011 Randy Corley 2012 Boyd Polhamus 2013 Wayne Brooks 2014 Wayne Brooks 629 PRCA Contract Personnel of the Year Coors Man in the Can 1984 Tom Feller 1985 Quail Dobbs 1986 Quail Dobbs 1987 Tom Feller 1988 J.G. The Oklahoma Panhandle State University graduate, 22, has been doing multiple events since he was young enough to practice rodeo in the arena in his backyard. “I started out rodeoing as a little kid, and the first thing we had in our arena was a bucking chute,” Frost said. “So I started riding calves, and then the next year we built a roping chute and I started tying goats, which led to tying calves, and chute dogging, which led to bulldogging. My grandpa (Joe) always said, ‘The more you enter, the more chances you have to win.’” Frost has been doing plenty of winning since joining the PRCA in 2012. While predominantly a bull rider, he’s also a tie-down roper and steer wrestler. That’s an unusual combination, since bull riders are typically some of the smallest competitors in rodeo and bulldoggers are usually the biggest, but it does make him a candidate for the Linderman Award for achievement at both ends of the arena. Frost considered specializing in bull riding, but found that entering only one event worked against him. “I would sit there for two hours and think about it, and by the time the bull riding came around, I was so worn out mentally that I didn’t have a chance in heck of riding,” he said. “I would have to help push calves or steers for somebody to take my mind off the bull riding. Part of the reason I went to school in Goodwell was the reputation they have for working both ends of the arena.“ Frost won $82,443 in the 2014 regular season, with $78,442 of it coming in bull riding. He qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, so he was already at the Thomas & Mack Center on Dec. 8 when he received his Linderman Award buckle. “Winning this award was a goal I set at the beginning of the year. It was pretty exciting to get that buckle, and I look forward to hopefully getting another seven or eight of them,” Frost told the ProRodeo Sports News. “I plan to contend for the Linderman each year, and that’ll always be a goal as long as I’m riding bulls. As a cowboy, the ultimate thing is to compete in both the roughstock and timed events.” The Linderman Award recognizes excellence at both ends of the arena. To qualify, a cowboy must win at least $1,000 in each of three events, and those events must include at least one roughstock event and one timed event. The Linderman Award is named for Bill Linderman, a world champion in timed and roughstock events who died in a 1965 plane crash near Salt Lake City. The first Linderman Award was presented in 1966. – Justin Shaw Linderman Award, 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 Benny Reynolds, Melrose, Mont. (Cowboys first join under the PRCA’s permit system, which allows them to compete for some time without becoming full-fledged members. Once a cowboy has “filled his permit” by winning $1,000 at PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, he can apply to become a full member; he is considered a rookie for the remainder of that season.) The PRCA’s Resistol Rookies of the Year are the firstseason cowboys who earn the most money in their events during that season. The Resistol All-Around Rookie of the Year is the rookie who earned the most money among all rookies who won at least $3,000 in each of two or more events. From 1956 through 2010, the PRCA also gave an Overall Rookie of the Year Award to the rookie who earned the most money in any one or more events. Also of note: Starting with the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, money earned at the Wrangler NFR counted in the rookie standings. The only PRCA rookies who competed at the 2014 Wrangler NFR were team roper Junior Nogueira, who roped with seven-time World Champion Header Jake Barnes and finished seventh in the world, and bull rider Sage Kimzey, who en route to a gold buckle set records for most money earned by a rookie ($318,631) and most money earned at the Wrangler NFR by any bull rider ($175,466). PRCA rookie standings and the 2014 Rookie of the Year Awards are sponsored by Resistol Hats. Although not expected to survive just after he was born, Billy Bob Brown has thrived. Now 23, the 2014 All-Around Rookie of the Year earned $17,725 as a team roping header and $3,032 as a tie-down roper, the highest earnings of any 2014 rookie who won money in at least two events.
