They should be perfect to drink from, but also carry a strong identity; it should not just be any random glass…The cup is held by a stem that I think expresses purity, strength and elegance with a design expression that works in most settings – from the minimalistic table setting to the more decorative one. I have worked with a strict shape that should float between the cup and the foot. It should lure you into getting engaged in the glass, you want to turn it to see how the light plays, you feel how it feels in your hand, and then you lift it to your mouth and experience the balance of the glass. The age of freedom was characterised by a new spirit of optimism which infused both public and private life and inspired numerous ventures of all kinds. Cultural and scientific academies were established, government became progressively more democratic, and new ground was broken in the arts and sciences alike. It was during this dynamic age that a glassworks, surprisingly modern for its time, was founded by two far-sighted entrepreneurs in what is now the village of Kosta. With the help of skilled craftsmen brought in from abroad, the new enterprise was soon on stable ground. Just over a year after its inauguration, on 11th of August 1743, the blowing room was completely destroyed by fire; but by the 15th of October of the same year a new blowing room was ready for production – an indication to future generations of Kosta’s irrepressible spirit. 104 Today Kosta is a glasshouse with it’s roots deeply embedded in the village and surrounding countryside. As a company it has lived long; and it is still proudly independent and capable of surviving for many years to come. For over two hundred and seventy years that have passed since Kosta’s foundation, courage and determination have been the hallmarks of those who have worked there.
