Volleystars- Welcome to Wheelers Hill Kailin, who had her first game of sport with us today. Annie, Jennifer and Alison served well this week and both games were very close in score. Next week is Round 4- a bye for us as our senior students are all away in Canberra on their study tour.... We play at Jells Park for round 5 once we return. Wheelers Hill Swimming Squad 2014 We have now completed our Swimming Carnival for 2014 with 57 students involved in this event. Most were Year 5 and 6 students, but we also required a few 9/10 year-old Year 4 students to join us. Most students competed in two or three events each and the trials were held at Swim World in Glen Waverley on Tuesday February 11 th. The actual competition was held at the Nunawading Pool on Wednesday February 19th. The 50m events are competitive races for more experienced swimmers. The 50m pool events include: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, as well as freestyle and mixed medley relays. Overall we came third amongst eight schools for our efforts in the 50m pool. Leisure pool activities are designed to add a little bit of fun in a more relaxed pool environment. This allows everyone to participate for enjoyment and further their skill development in the smaller pool. The 20m leisure pool activities included: wading races, piggy back races, freestyle, backstroke, kickboard swims, and ring collection. This year we again came third for the events held in this pool. All students who came first or second in their 50m ‘A’ event race were then given the opportunity to compete at the Division (Zone) level on Thursday, February 27th at the Monash Aquatic & Recreation Centre. Thirteen of our students achieved this result. Special congratulations to: Hunter Morgan- boys 9/10 freestyle relay James Dixon - boys 9/10 freestyle relay Ryan C- both boys 9/10 freestyle & boys 9/10 freestyle relay Qwyn Q – both boys 9/10 breaststroke & 9/10 freestyle relay Mack H- boys 11 freestyle relay Kristopher K- boys 11 freestyle relay Matt A – both boys 11 backstroke & boys 11 freestyle relay Changmin L –both 11 old boys freestyle & boys 11 freestyle relay Joshua B- boys 12 medley relay Jack Lucas K- boys 12 freestyle & boys 12 freestyle relay Aidan B- boys 12 medley relay & boys 12 freestyle relay Bailey P– boys 12 medley relay, boys 12 backstroke & boys 12 freestyle relay Joshua L- boys 12 medley relay, boys 12 breaststroke, boys 12 butterfly & boys 12 freestyle relay This year there were no clashes between the Year Six Canberra study tour and the Division competition, so everyone listed above was able to attend. Our team did us proud and we had quite a cheer squad of family member support. We did not have anyone move through to the next level, (Regional) this year and competition was tough, but all students swam well with lovely stroke technique. Qwyn placed 4th in his individual breaststroke event and Joshua L came third for his butterfly effort. The boys 10 year old freestyle relay team also came fourth on the day. Many thanks to Sally Kennedy and all senior school staff for their continued support and assistance during the carnival this year. Also thanks to those parents who volunteered their time to assist, supervise, time and support all our wonderful WHPS students. Finally, well done to all those students who participated in the 2014 Swim Squad. I was especially proud of the enthusiasm, peer support, manners, behaviour and sportsmanship displayed by all our students. Well done, thank you and I hope that many of you will volunteer to be involved in the Carnival again next year in 2015! Nicole Thompson Physical Education & Sport Co-Ordinator On Tuesday February 25th two senior players from the Richmond football club came out to run an AFL clinic with our Year 5/6 students. This year we were lucky enough to have Alex Rance and Todd Elton participate in the annual clinic. The weather was beautiful and our students made the best of this opportunity, demonstrating their current ability and learning new games and ball handling skills. Thanks to Richmond and the AFL for providing this opportunity to our students. More Auskick style clinics will be run this year during Term 2 for all those students in Prep to Year 2. We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind: Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up. Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan. Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher early as early as possible. From 1 March 2014, new laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day. The dismal weather earlier in the day cleared just in time, giving us blue sky, dry ground and a light breeze. The students enjoyed the Earth Ball, Parachute and novelty races in addition to free play and everyone enjoyed the traditional Tug of War to end our picnic. A big thank you goes to Luke Purcell, Josh Crozier and our School Council for providing the sausage sizzle. Thanks also to the teachers who were helping out. It was great to see so many teachers able to come along too. Thanks to our parents who helped with the entry tables and donating prizes for our lucky draw. We hope you all had an enjoyable time and will come again next year. AGM REMINDER: Parents’ Association Annual General Meeting will be held on March 19, 7.30 pm in the Staff Room. All welcome.
