Satu Mare, A View on Ştefan cel Mare /Stephan the Great/ Street Traces of history are all around, written in stone by people and their memorable deeds. From the fortresses in Satu Mare, Ardud, Medieşu Aurit, heavily tried by weather and wars, to the castles in Carei, Livada, Pomi, to the monuments built to honour the memory of Romanian soldiers in Carei, Satu Mare, Tăşnad. Glorious names, such as those of Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave) and Ian Sobieski, have sculpted the pillars on which the county’s history rests. Satu Mare is a harmoniously and unitary interwoven cultural mosaic, where the Oaş Mountains are continued by lovely plains from which thermal springs and healing mineral waters flow and lakes and forests that bring one to life spring. These entire combined make a display of “sătmărean” nature, always ready to feast, like the traditional wedding in Ţara Oaşului (Oas Country). The creative spirit of „satmarean” people who love beauty is generously proved by folk costumes, customs, songs and dances in Ţara Oaşului (Oas Country) and Ţara Codrului (Forest’s Country). Nowhere in the entire world are there garments more beautiful than those in Oaş, songs like „ţâpuriturile” impossible to mistake, dances more special than „codreneşti” dances. And all that because every „satmarean” has always known how to make from life a perpetual party! He has known how to enjoy the gifts of the benevolent nature, how to keep and enrich the tradition delegated by his ancestors and above all how to be human. He knew how to always greet the passer-by and how to invite his guest to taste the unique meals traditionally cooked and the „pălinca”, already famous in the whole world. That is why Satu Mare County is one of those mustvisit places. Because as soon as one arrives here, he must make room in his soul for the fairytale places and extraordinary people he may find. And, as any “satmarean” would say, „Care a venit o dată, revine”! (Once you have come here, you will be back!) Lord Alexandru Karolyi built a castle on this fortress’s site in 1630, of which there can still be seen one tower, restored in 1896, Neo-Gothic in style, the ruins of another tower and a maze of cellars of which they say that they reached the Carei castle, where one could arrive on horse back. Karolyi Castle in Carei The history of the Carei Castle starts in 1482, when Karoly Laszlo was building a fortified house. This construction incited the opposition of the lords in Sătmar shire, the king Matei Corvin himself being compelled to interfere to settle the conflict. In 1592, due to the frequent Turkish raids, Karoly Mihaly decides to reinforce the existing construction. 3. Carei, Karolyi Castle, chandelier 4. Yellow water lilies predominate in old river beds with deep water and on slow river portions. Cycling tourism lovers may visit the reserve’s natural and cultural values on one of the bicycle routes on the Tur River dam, while water tourism lovers may go down the river in a canoe. The large range of folk customs is related both to the traditional cultivation and processing of plum trees and vine, and strawberry cultivation. The Oas Country has become famous by its folk costumes, art, music and dance specific to this area, which delight the view especially on the occasion of special events: weddings, “hora” (Romanian dance in a circle), “şezători” (evening sitting of village women), “sâmbre” (sheep festival, the beggining of sheep milking in the mountains), washing of spun yarns and other festivals. The ethnographic elements of the Oas Country are gathered in the Oas Country Museum in Negreşti Oaş. Oas house Ancient Oas houses were built of wood, with a shingle or straw roof that is tall and conic, with “tărnaţul” (porch) supported on “suliţi” (poles) and the “vraniţa” (tall gate to the courtyard) artistically sculpted in oak wood. Costumes Oas costumes distinguishes by originality, colours and ornaments. One could never see an Oas inhabitant without a bell adorned with beads or feathers and “straiţa” (sack) ornamented in a special range of colours with geometric or vegetal patterns. Loose summer trousers or tight “cioarecii” (peasant tight trousers) and white or black “guba” (peasant cloak) worn in the winter are still in use since the times of the Dacians. Woman costumes are characterized by the same freshness, vivacity and originality: the richly coloured blouse of geometric or floral patterns and the flowery apron usually on yellow or red background. CONTENTS Satu Mare 44. Typical “Oash” dances like “The Wheel” and “The Brides” animated by the abrupt rhythm of the “cetera” (violin), and “ţâpurituri” (shouting) and hand clapping are unique. The Oas dance repertory also includes the dance of young men and women in pairs in a row and the circle dance of the young men in the category of vertical dances. 1. (shouting) 1 2 Cross-border Guidebook of Satu Mare – Transcarpathia “Ţâpuritura” (folk onomatopoeic exclamations) plays an important part in the musical life of Oaş, which has taken even some of the functions of other traditional genres. Even carols are sung in this style. Wedding The wedding in the Oas Country represents one of the most spectacular elements of folk culture in the north-west of Transylvania. This moment, prepared in advance by the young people and their parents, has many values with implications in the community’s social life, in the fortune inheritance system, and the economic life of the respective families. The wedding is first of all a rite of passing, which implies making some gestures and ritual acts well established by tradition: preparation of the dower, costumes, choosing the godfathers, wedding invitation, wedding flag manufacturing, separations, marriage ceremony, magical acts with augural role, the feast proper and gift collection, all accompanied by “ţâpurituri”, nuptial poems, songs and dances. Shepherd traditions There is the yearly custom, that began 50 years before, that sheep owners in the Oas Country gather on the plateau at Sâmbra Oilor (Huta – Certeze) and to carry out the measurement before the sheep and their shepherd leave until the autumn in transhumance. CONTENTS Cross-border Guidebook of Satu Mare – Transcarpathia Satu Mare 45. Satu Mare 3 Sheep “sâmbra” or milk measuring is a shepherd custom taking place at the beginning of spring in the traditional world of Oas villages, standing for the moment when sheep measuring is done, which coincides with the beginning of grazing. It is one of Ukraine’s most interesting regions offering splendid places for rest and for learning about local history and culture. Churches, castles, lakes and museums will be for ever remembered by people visiting this hospitable place. „Eternal place. The Center of Europe was established with high precision using equipment specially made in Austria and Hungary able to measure meridians and parallels. 1887“. This is what the Latin inscription on the milepost in Dilove (Valea Vişeului /Visheu Valley/), Rahiv district (Rackiv, Rahovo) means, not far from the Romanian border. It is the Geographical Centre of Europe, kilometre 0, where many tourists come and take pictures of themselves near the obelisk built right in this place. The highest peak of the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, mount Goverla (2061 m) and the Daffodils Valley, unique and surprising are found in Transcarpathia. In winter, the ski pistes of Transcarpathia offer similar conditions to those of the most famous European pistes. Once in Transcarpathia you must see the Sinevir mountain lake and enjoy the mineral water that, in Transcarpathia, flows from more than 700 springs. The biggest allergological hospital in the world built in a salt mine is here. But the greatest fortune of Transcarpathia are its people. Simple, with open hearts, they will warmly welcome you. The originality of Transcarpathian culture is marked by the multiple ethnic groups making its population. This is where the traditions and customs of Ukrainians, Magyars, Romanians and Germans harmoniously develop. Dozens of Ukrainian and international festivals and contests are annually organized here. Churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries are preserved and still functional. Transcarpathia GUIDEBOOK Transcarpathia 1 Enter the fairytale land of Transcarpathia and you will discover the tale of the “Green Gold”: forests, orchards, vineyards, picturesque mountains and valleys rich in mineral springs. All that have visites Transcarpathia at least once acknowledge the fact that places as beautiful as these can hardly be found elsewhere. Nature parks, with various and rare species and with exotic plants that continuously bloom from early spring until close to the beginning of winter contribute to this image. The Carpathians, it seems, melt in the tempestuous blossoming of trees and shrubs, such as Japanese quince tree, Florida apple tree, Chinese apple tree, chestnut tree, cypress tree, magnolia tree. Villages in Transcarpathia have an important architectural and historical richness, a special culture and a peculiar life style, all embraced by the picturesque landscapes offered by nature. The most popular places for rest are the villages on river valleys, lake shores or in the mountains, where tourists enjoy the landscapes, fresh air and mineral waters and hot springs with healing properties. It has a great historic centre, a hill from where one can admire the beautiful landscapes and three nearby rivers. The name may be related to the Husztica River. It is possible that the town was named on a traditional Romanian food ingredient – “husti”. The castle on Mount Hossana, of volcanic origin, was built of wood in the 11th century, and later of stone, which resisted the siege for a long time. The fortress stayed undestructible many times and when it was conquered and demolished it rose again. 2 BUSINESS TOURISM 2. The town has a dendrological park with 70 species of exotic trees. Berehove is the wine-fabrication centre in the region. Cross-border Guidebook of Satu Mare – Transcarpathia Mukacheve Transcarpathia Cross-border Guidebook of Satu Mare – Transcarpathia is located most westwardly and it is the smallest of all regional centres in Ukraine, but it proudly keeps its own aspect which distinguishes it and makes it unique. It still keeps a medieval old air, combined with the elegant business-like aspect. Ujgorod, the town on the river Uj, is located at the Carpathian Mountains feet, to the north-eastern part of the Danube Valley. The city is an andministrative, economic, cultural, scientific and tourist centre of the Transcarpathia region. The settlement dates more than 1105 years before, the first documentary testimonies showing it as a fortress during the early feudal period. The town of Ujgorod spreads on an area of 40 km2 and it is divided in 17 historical subdivisions. The western line of Ujgorod district overlaps the Ukrainian border with Slovakia and Tisa customs point, on the Kiev – Budapest route is 20 km from the town of Ujgorod. In Mukacheve, the surrounding mountains have formed a natural gigantic amphitheatre that turned into a medieval fortress. This one was recorded in historical documents at the beginning of the 14th century, bearing the name of Palanok. In 1633, prince Rakoczy reconstructed the fortress into a knights castle. The castle was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, turned into a prison in the 18th century, and later into a barrack in the 19th century. Mukacheve Castle is a valuable example of medieval architecture for fortifications. Not for from the castle there lies the Mukacheve white stone Monasterydin, whose first structures date from the 14th century. The monastery took its contemporary shape in 1766-1772. 1. There are many legends on the castle’s history. One of them talks about a Polish Lord who decided to conquer the castle. The castle was owned at that time by Baron Drugert. The Polish Lord decided to first research. He changed his clothes and went to the castle. There he met the baron’s daughter, who immediately fell in love with him. She told him all the castle’s secrets. But the baron found out and ordered his daughter to be walled alive. Ever since then it is said that during the fool-moon nights the girl’s spirit walks on the walls looking for her lover. 82. The oldest of the two parts of the church, called Rotunda, is a construction typical for the Roman style, with circular walls 2,5 m in diameter and cornices decorated with Roman motifs. The majority of specialists consider that this part of the church dates from the 10th century or the beginning of the 11th century. The church lies near the Ujgorod fortress. According to the inscription above the door, the church was rebuilt by Hryhoriy Makarovych in Baroque style in 1791. Its interior was adornes with an iconostasis of beautifully painted icons in 1821. “The Holy Virgin Mary” Wooden Church in Costrino Velyky Berezny District The church in Costrino is one of the most surprising monuments of Ukrainian architecture. Cross-border Guidebook of Satu Mare – Transcarpathia 1 1 Transcarpathia CONTENTS "The Holy Spirit" Wooden Church in Kolochava-Horb "Saint Nicholas" Wooden Church in Danylovo Mizhhiria District Khust District Built in two sections, the Kolochava church is the living testimony of the most complex architectural techniques in Transcarpathia. According to the inscription on the entry pillars, the church was built in 1795 by Ferents Tekka. The church is graceful and perfectly proportioned. The high tower to the west is crowned by a splendid Baroque assembly made of two overlaid domes and a lamp. The church in Danylovo is the most recent one (1779) and maybe the most beautiful of all wooden churches built in Gothic style in Khust District. Its amazing proportions, the tower with a very high spire momentarily gives the viewer the impression that the church defeats gravity. The porch to the west is embellished with arc-shaped windows and the interior walls were painted in 1828 by I. Kornmayer. "The Birth of Virgen Mary" Church in Pilipets Mizhhiria District The church was built of fir tree in the second half of the 17th century (maybe 1780), but its current shape is due to its reconstruction in 1841. "Saint Nicholas" Wooden Church in Kolodne Tiachiv District The church in Kolodne is one of the oldest monuments of religious architecture in Ukraine. It was initially built in a place called Odariv from where it was transferred to its current location. The church's aspects are specific to a defensive construction, with a structure of 12 meter long oak logs dating from 1470. 88. The special wall painting, dating from 1779, is the work of the paintor Ştefan Terebelschi. "Saint Nicholas" Wooden Church in Sokyrnytsia Khust District Another masterpiece of Gothic architecture is found in the village of Sokyrnytsia. The church, built on an oak structure in the 17th century, consists in a large room divided into the nave, the narthex, the altar and a closed porch on the main façade of the building. The porch's windows are triangular. "Saint Michael" Wooden Church in the outdoor museum of Ujgorod Ujgorod District The wooden church within the outdoor museum in Ujgorod is one of the most beautiful churches in Ukraine. The construction year is thought to be 1777, and the place – Shelestovo. The wooden church was moved to Mucacevo after they built a new stone church (1928). As it is the only church in Lemko style in the west of Transcarpathia, it was taken to the museum in Ujgorod in 1974. 1. Ujoc Wooden Church 2. Group, traditional costumes from Transcarpathia 5. Mucacevo, Palanok Castle 3. Wild boars in Transcarpathian forests Once in Ukraine, the tourist must have certain rules in mind and be careful to certain aspects generated by the cultural differences between Ukrainians and other peoples, such as Western European ones. Smiles and other “closeness” gestures are reserved for their acquaintances. In public, Ukrainians are more distant, that is why they may seem tough. Also, the high tone in which they speak resembles a quarrel but it is their usual, normal way of communicating. 96. Public transportation drivers use to speak louder, or even shout. One must not look at it as an offence or a rude gesture. Cigaretted ca be found everywhere, but they are usually of poor quality. Restrictions for the smokers lack almost completely. You may smoke in cafes, restaurants, bus stations etc. Bus drivers smoke as well. Public transport is very cheap and accessible to everyone and it is done by microbuses, trolleybuses or buses. That is why, the crowd in public transport may bother the tourist accustomed to other standards. During the trip, even if the air is not very fresh and the temperature is higher (up to 30oC), windows will not be opened as Ukrainians think it dangerous to be exposed to air coming in through the open windows of public transport at high speed. The train is the favourite means of public transport in Ukraine. There are two kinds of trains: longdistance trains and short-distance trains („electricica”). Traveling by „electricica” is cheap and on the train you may see the hospitality of Ukrainians who will offer you vodka. instead of receiveing one grivna and fifty copeika, she may ask you for another fifty copeika so that she may give you back two grivnas. This procedure may seem ambiguous and deceitful but it is common in Ukraine. Prices are rather low. For a trip of approximately 15 minutes in taxi you will pay around 4 €. Accommodation in a normal hotel varies between 10 and 30 €. One lunch meal in a fast-food restaurant costs about 4 €. Exchange offices are everywhere in the crowdy areas of the town and in tourist areas. They offer prices as good or even better than the banks. But please be careful at currency rates displayed by the exchange offices in tourist areas. It often happens that a „0” should be forgotten there by mistake. Also we recommend you to be discreet with the money you have, just in case. Punctuality is an aspect Ukrainians totally lack of. Waiting for 10-20 minutes is normal. Otherwise, the chaotic traffic is many times the cause of these delays. There are not many taxi companies, but we recommend you to ask at the hotel’s reception desk for a taxi. Service may be a little different from “European” ones, but the price is very small. Hotel standards in Ukraine do not correspond to European standards. Tourist units offer accommodation on comfort categories: economic, normal, demi-luxury, luxury. Also, the separation between comfort and price classes is done according to additional facilities and services offered. Money circulates as banknotes of 1,2,5,10,20,50,100 and 200 grivne and coins of 1,2,5,10,20, 50 copeika and 1 grivna. When you shop, the change you must receive may be a problem. Do not be surprised if the shop assistant will ask you for some change to give you back a banknote.
