In December of 2009, eight community leaders who make up the Morgantown Sister Cities Commission, visited the central Mexico city with the goal of expanding tourism, economic development, education and culture. They joined a host of other cities as part of the first sister city festival. “There are very similar things between Morgantown and Guanajuato,” Byrne said. “It’s a mountainside city, has a large university, it has a great relationship with the city council and the government, beautiful terrain, great people, very friendly, great food.” The two communities share a significant history of exchange of programs by West Virginia University and the University of Guanajuato as well. The relationship originated under the leadership of Ron Justice, Morgantown’s mayor at that time, and was continued by the subsequent mayor, Bill Byrne.
