WELCOME
to Greater MORGANTOWN
To all of our guests, we say, “Welcome to Mountaineer
Country!”
Graced with four distinct seasons, Greater Morgantown
is an extraordinary land of natural beauty; high country
and mirrored lakes are gifts we call “Almost Heaven.”
Nearby Cheat Canyon makes for high-adventure fun. The
Cheat River splashes over at least 30 rapids rated Class
III or higher, ideal for kayaking or whitewater rafting. Zipline excitement is on tap at the West Virginia University’s
Adventure WV near Coopers Rock State Forest.
This exciting American destination has a secret: a
wealth of Appalachian culture that is reflected in
handcrafted artwork, locally grown foods, music and
celebrations! Annual festivals are a great chance to see
us as we really are, from Wine and Jazz to Buckwheat
to the MountainFest motorcycle rally!
Broadway plays here in the summer–our historic Met
Theatre is the backdrop for West Virginia Public Theatre.
Morgantown’s dynamic nightlife and extraordinary
menus create a culinary scene that’s hard to beat!
Dining alfresco by the water is a must! Make sure you
make time to squeeze in a wine tasting at Forks of
Cheat, a locally-owned award-winning winery.
Your journey through Mountaineer Country is a discovery
of hidden gems and once-in-a-lifetime experiences . . .
and you’re bound to run into friendly people, eager to
share their stories and learn about yours.
Upon arriving in town, we invite you stop by one of
our Visitors’ Centers for last minute answers to any
remaining questions that you may have.
We look forward to sharing MORE!gantown’s
Mountaineer Spirit with you!

Just for fun, visit the Forks of Cheat Baptist
Church, the first church established west
of the mountains in November, 1775, and
find the infamous “whiskey stone” in the
front lawn cemetery. This headstone
served quite another purpose during
Prohibition: here, dollars were discreetly
exchanged for liquor!
Morgantown’s one-of-a-kind culture
is in everything around you, from the
quaint antique shops and world-famous
“Pepperoni Rolls,” to the Appalachian
music and handmade crafts. In every
way possible, the past seamlessly
weaves through the essence of presentday Mountaineer Country, making it an
American destination rich with heritage.

Morgantown Joins
Sister City in Mexico
L
promoting economic and cultural
exchanges between the two
cities.
In December of 2009, eight
community leaders who make
up the Morgantown Sister Cities
Commission, visited the central
Mexico city with the goal of
expanding tourism, economic
development, education and
culture. They joined a host of
other cities as part of the first
sister city festival.
“There are very similar things
between Morgantown and
Guanajuato,” Byrne said. “It’s a
mountainside city, has
a large university, it has
a great relationship with
the city council and the
government, beautiful
terrain, great people, very
friendly, great food.” The
two communities share
a significant history of
exchange of programs by
West Virginia University
and the University of
Guanajuato as well.
The relationship originated under
the leadership of Ron Justice,
Morgantown’s mayor at that
time, and was continued by the
subsequent mayor, Bill Byrne.
Byrne met with Guanajuato’s
mayor, Eduardo Romero Hicks, to
present a proclamation of intent,
Morgantown is a
member of Sister Cities
International, a nonprofit
citizen diplomacy
network that creates and
strengthens partnerships
between U.S. and
international communities.
ocated just north of
Mexico City, Guanajuato is
considered one of the most
important historical and cultural
colonial cities in Mexico, but
about 1800 miles away, in
Morgantown, WV, community
leaders believe they have found
a future and a sister city.

owntown Morgantown pulses with the beat of
countless live performances and talented DJs.
Because the downtown is compact, club hoppers
can stroll streets that teem with activity all night
long. The action starts at Bent Willey’s. Beyond
the velvet ropes, you’ll find seven different party
rooms including the 80s Lounge, Dance Club,
Patio Bar and “Cool Zone.” Downstairs is The
Vintage Room, an elite bar stocked with fine
wines, exquisite champagnes and rare cigars.
Gourmet appetizers and brick oven pizzas are
on the menu. Across the street, Chic-n-Bones
Rhythm Cafe offers Karaoke. Small groups will
enjoy Gibbie’s Pub and Eatery, featuring intimate
tables and booths and 30s style decor.
Venture out of the city and you’ll find honkytonks,
beer gardens and family-run taverns. While
Crockett’s is a legend to any student who ever
visited or attended WVU, it’s Mario’s Fishbowl
that holds so many memories. 60 years of
reflections are written on receipts, napkins and
business cards that layer the walls and “the
coldest beer in Morgantown” is served in “Weiss”
goblets, or “fishbowls.” Archie’s and Schmitt’s
Saloon are biker-friendly bars. Kegler’s, Coach’s,
Legends and Varsity Club (across from Milan
Puskar Stadium) will satisfy most sports fans.
Bartini in Suncrest Towne Centre features live
bands and dueling pianos on a stage directly
behind the bar. For specialty wines and
Italian tapas, you can’t beat The Wine Bar at
Vintner Valley.
Located in the heart of Morgantown’s bustling
nightlife strip, Joe Mama’s has live bands and
free pool. RockTop Bar & Grille is a stylish rooftop
retreat by day transforming into a vibrant
nightspot after dark. For locally brewed beer,
stop by Morgantown Brewing Company, or the
