LIVING

history
Greater Morgantown’s heritage is reflected in its
architecture, artwork, cuisine and celebrations.
Countless customs and traditions passed down over
generations are a vibrant part of daily life here and make
“Mountaineer Country” an epicenter of Appalachian
culture. But the region was an ethnic melting pot as well;
as early as the 1880’s into the 1920’s coal mines attracted
immigrants from Europe. Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, and
Italian roots are common in the region, and their heritage
has become an indistinguishable part of the Greater
Morgantown fabric.
There is no shortage of ways to discover the many facets of the
region’s history, starting with Arthurdale, “Eleanor’s Little Village.”
The community was nurtured by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt
when it became the first New Deal project. The living history
museum traces the fascinating connection between a West
Virginia community and the First Lady in the 1930s.
Local events such as the Preston County Buckwheat Festival,
WVU Mountaineer Week, Arts Walk, and the Civil War Weekend
celebrating the Victory of Rowlesburg gives you the chance to
rub shoulders with our locals and understand what makes our
region tick.
A walking audio tour of downtown Morgantown reveals the
city’s historic architecture through structures like the majestic
Metropolitan Theatre, home to vaudeville acts featuring Bob
Hope, Bing Crosby and Helen Hayes. No less than 10 of WVU’s
downtown campus buildings are on the national register of
historic places.
Just for fun, visit the Forks of Cheat Baptist Church, the first
church established west of the mountains in November,
1775, and find the infamous “whiskey stone” in the front
lawn cemetery. This headstone served quite another
purpose during Prohibition: here, dollars were discreetly
exchanged for liquor!
Morgantown’s one-of-a-kind culture is in everything
around you, from the quaint antique shops and
world-famous “Pepperoni Rolls” to the Appalachian
music and handmade crafts. In every way possible,
the past seamlessly weaves through the essence
of present-day Mountaineer Country, making it an
American destination rich with heritage.

interest. Today, Arthurdale is a National Historic District

TO YOUR ARTS
Greater Morgantown is an art lovers paradise, whether you’re a serious
collector, a fan, or you happen to be an artist yourself.

VISUAL ARTS
With more than a dozen galleries to explore, you’ll be astonished by
the area’s array of art, including traditional and contemporary painting,
photography, pottery, sculpture, and textiles . Greater Morgantown’s
Appalachian roots are reflected in many of the galleries, but plenty of the
world’s other cultures are represented, too.
Just five miles out of Morgantown is Brown’s Creations In Clay, Anna Brown’s
pottery enclave, where the artist grows her own herbs and presses them into
clay to complete her signature dishware, decorative vases and drinking vessels.
Stan and Sue Jennings run Allegheny Treenware, handcrafting kitchen and other
household implements from West Virginia hardwoods. The couple demonstrates
their art by making a spoon from beginning to end while you watch!
Don’t miss the chance to meet some of the area’s visual artists at gallery openings,
which take place year-round but with more frequency during the summer months.
Arts Mon, The Monongalia Arts Center and WVU’s Creative Arts Center Mesaros
Galleries are sure bets!
PERFORMANCES
Broadway comes to Greater Morgantown every summer. The West Virginia Public
Theatre’s elaborate musicals pack the house–and has a new home, the historic
Met Theatre. Community theater groups offer fans a never-ending showcase
of dramatic plays, musicals, comedic performances – even children’s dance and
theater. Rising stars performing at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheater are
rivaled by -- the stars! The outdoor venue is situated on the river front and hosts

FESTIVALS AND ART FAIRS
Wine & jazz, country & western, rock & roll – it’s all here in Greater Morgantown.
The All Good Music Festival is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most successful music
and camping events. The annual weekend-long gathering is held every July
in Masontown and has featured past performances from Widespread Panic,
Phil Lesh & Friends, Trey Anastasio, and String Cheese Incident.
The West Virginia Wine & Jazz Festival is known for its scenic splendor,
renowned musical performances and diverse wine selection. The event
stretches over a weekend every September at Camp Muffly.
West Virginia University pays tribute to its Appalachian heritage each
fall during Mountaineer Week. The craft fair is an indoor, juried craft
fair featuring quality Appalachian handcrafted objects by over 60
artisans from West Virginia and surrounding states.
As you visit the area, discovering one gallery after another, a large
playhouse or the intimate one-man stages, you’ll agree: art lies at
the heart of Greater Morgantown!

Morgantown Joins
Sister City in Mexico
Located just north of Mexico City, Guanajuato is considered one of the most important historical and
cultural colonial cities in Mexico, but about 1800 miles away, in Morgantown, W.Va., community leaders
believe they have found a future and a sister city.
In December of 2009, eight community leaders who make up the Morgantown Sister Cities Commission, visited
the central Mexico city with the goal of expanding tourism, economic development, education and culture.
They joined a host of other cities as part of the first sister city festival.
The relationship originated under the leadership of Ron Justice, Morgantown’s mayor at that time, and was
continued by the subsequent mayor, Bill Byrne. Byrne met with Guanajuato’s mayor, Eduardo Romero Hicks,
to present a proclamation of intent, promoting economic and cultural exchanges between the two cities.
“There are very similar things between Morgantown and Guanajuato,” Byrne said.“It’s a mountainside
city, has a large university, it has a great relationship with the city council and the government, beautiful
terrain, great people, very friendly, great food.” The two communities share a significant history of
exchange of programs by West Virginia University and the University of Guanajuato as well.
Morgantown is a member of Sister Cities International, a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates
and strengthens partnerships between U.S. and international communities.

MORE!
dining
Dining in Greater Morgantown has evolved into a
culinary adventure; new restaurants are thriving and
timeless family establishments are flourishing.
For casual fare with an urban flair, try The Boston Beanery, a
franchise that originated in Morgantown, or Damon’s Grille for fall off
the bone BBQ ribs. A family favorite is Colasante’s, old world Italian and
a landmark for locals. Lakeside dining is available at Archie’s Lakehouse
throughout the Cheat Lake boating season, and Yesterday’s Restaurant
Bar & Grill features a large fireplace and patio dining.
The influence of flavors and culture here is almost overwhelming and has
many positive effects on menu and recipe design. Wings Olé is a favorite
of university students for “fries and bleu.” Black Bear Burritos uses fresh
ingredients and offers some vegan choices on the menu; you might even
luck into a folk duo performance. Enticing flavors and exotic ingredients
abound at Cafe of India and Peking House. Rio Grande and Los Mariachis
excel at authentic mexican cuisine. Situated in the Morgantown Airport, Ali
Baba’s Middle Eastern fare is served with a view of the runway.
You’ll find a diverse wine selection and imaginative cuisine at Morgantown’s
fine dining restaurants. Stefano’s is family owned and specializes in Old World
Italian and American cuisine with recipes that have been handed down through
generations. Executive Chef Simon Poulin at Sargasso takes his inspiration from
the Caribbean, French, Asian, Italian and Continental cuisines . Café Bacchus
offers upscale cuisine served in an historic home in downtown Morgantown.
Lira Restaurant and Lounge offers a European menu it’s unique downtown
Morgantown location was previously a bank property and guests can request
dining accommodations in the vault!
There are several palate pleasers in Morgantown’s Wharf District where you can
enjoy alfresco dining by the Monongahela River. Oliverio’s Ristorante on the
Wharf is a Tuscan inspired eatery; (a casual version of the decor and menu is
available at Oliverio’s Marketplace in Suncrest). The Regatta Bar and Grille
inside Waterfront Place Hotel features a crew team/rowing theme; during the
WVU football and basketball seasons you might catch the statewide sportsline
shows for Coaches Bob Huggins and Bill Stewart.
Just off the beaten path of the I-68 exit for Bruceton Mills is Little Sandy’s
Restaurant with simple country cooking, like homemade biscuits and gravy,
it’s one of the best places to sample the local specialty, buckwheat cakes
and sausage. Two good reasons to visit Aurora: Cathedral State Park and
Melanie’s, “home of good food, friendly smiles and low prices.”
Make your way to Kingwood for Monroe’s Deli Style Eatery in downtown
and Prime Thyme at Preston Country Club, two local favorites.
Save room for dessert . . . a stroll through Downtown Morgantown will
land you in front of Cold Stone Creamery!
Greater Morgantown knows how to celebrate food, too. RibFest
(June), the Chicken Wing Cook Off (August), and Preston County
Buckwheat Festival (September) are family friendly and delicious.
Like a too-small serving of your favorite dish, you may find your
culinary adventure ending before you’ve quite satisfied your
hunger. Not to worry . . . return visits to Greater Morgantown are
highly encouraged!

MORE!
nightlife
Listen closely on any evening in Greater
Morgantown and you’ll hear the sounds of people
having fun!
Downtown Morgantown pulses with the beat
of countless live performances and talented DJs.
Because the downtown is compact, club hoppers
can stroll streets that teem with activity all night long.
The action starts at Bent Willey’s. Beyond the velvet
ropes you’ll find seven different party rooms including
the 80’s Lounge, Dance Club, Patio Bar and “Cool Zone.”
Downstairs is the Vintage Room, an elite bar stocked
with fine wines, exquisite champagnes, martinis, and rare
cigars. Gourmet appetizers and brick oven pizzas are
on the menu. Across the street, Chic-n-Bones Rhythm
Cafe offers Karaoke, along with The Back Door and De
ja vu. Small groups of 2-4 will enjoy Gibbie’s Pub and
Eatery featuring intimate tables and booths and 30’s style
decor. Located in the heart of Morgantown’s bustling
nightlife strip, De Lazy Lizard’s neon green lights make
it hard to miss. A cosmopolitan decor and sushi bar make
DragonFly a destination. For locally brewed beer, stop by
Morgantown Brewing Company (Brew Pub), the back
deck offers occasional live music. And look no further than
123 Pleasant Street for the authentic Morgantown music
scene. Sideline’s, The Sports Page and Brick Yard Pub
always have a game on the big screen.
As the moon makes its trek across the sky, local food cart
vendors emerge along downtown’s side streets, selling hot
dogs and pretzels.
Venture out of the city and you’ll find honky tonks, beer
gardens and family-run taverns. While Crockett’s is a
legend to any student who ever visited or attended WVU,
it’s Mario’s Fishbowl that holds so many memories: 60
years of reflections are written on receipts, napkins and
business cards that layer the walls and “the coldest
beer in Morgantown is served in “Weiss” goblets, or
“fishbowls.” Archie’s, Blue Star and Rhythm and
Brews are biker-friendly bars. Kegler’s, Coach’s,
Legends, and Varsity Club (across from the WVU
Stadium) will satisfy most sports fans.
Whether you’re in the mood for laid-back
vibe, country music or open mic, Greater
Morgantown keeps the party going from day
to night.

MORE!
There’s no better way to discover a
city than to shop your way through
it. Greater Morgantown provides a wealth
of retail opportunities.
Even with premier shopping centers, such as Morgantown Mall,
home to Hollister Co., Aeropostale, and Victoria’s Secret, as well
as University Towne Center, featuring well-known anchor retailers
such as Wal-Mart, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods, shopping
connoisseurs have discovered that where the area really shines is in
its exclusive one-of-a-kind shops. To make your retail adventure more
enjoyable, here’s the inside track on some of our favorites.
Downtown Morgantown’s historic High Street is every bit the destination spot.
It’s hard to resist the captivating window displays of Coni & Franc, spotlighting
high-fashion for women. Tanner’s Alley features leather handbags made
locally from vintage clothing. Across the street, duck into Slight Indulgence for
Godiva Chocolates, cigars, and a fantastic selection of wine.
Walk through the door of Arrow Gift Shoppe and you’ll hear a bell clanging
against antique wood and possibly run into Patrick and Nibbles, the shop’s
resident cats. The store serves as the Don Knotts headquarters, honoring
Morgantown’s favorite son with one-of-a-kind souvenirs, like postcards, license
plates and a full selection of blue and gold WVU souvenirs.
Just for fun, stop by Bead Monster Boutique for jewelry that will suit your
taste because you make it yourself. Local pottery and glass is plentiful at
Appalachian Gallery; for a memorable denim experience visit Vance’s Blues
on Walnut Street.
A towering 100-foot glass furnace chimney marks the entrance to the historic
Seneca Center. The renovated glass plant’s brick-lined walls and worn wooden
floors greet visitors as they wind their way through the assortment of privately
owned specialty shops including The Finery, chic fashions for women, and
Wamsley’s Cycles, part bike shop, part hangout for cyclists and part bike university.
The Antiques Walk is a great resource for vintage jewelry, furniture and glass.
Drive east on I-68, Exit 23 to Bruceton and uncover the past at the Bruceton
Antique Mall, over 6,000 square feet of collectibles, toys, fine furniture, clocks,
pottery, glassware, and china. Continue east to Kingwood and you’ll land on
Main Street, a step back in time! The Calico Cat is located across from the
courthouse and tucked behind the old bank building. This two-story cottage
welcomes you with seven rooms of unique gifts and home decor.
A short drive South and you’re in Rowlesburg where The Curiosity
Shoppe houses 42 West Virginia Cats’ meow village buildings, Fenton Art
handmade glass, pottery and WV hand-painted slates.
Greater Morgantown is for the treasure hunter. Shopping here is about
the eclectic, the one-of-a-kind, the unexpected. It’s about running
across stores with their own personalities, stores that aren’t anywhere
else. It’s the Farmers Market every Sat. morning, May through
October in downtown Morgantown -- a diverse collection of more
than 30 vendors selling the freshest produce, meats, eggs, and
breads. “It’s about finding yourself at Altered Ego Boutique and
splurging funky and affordable style.”
Return home the envy of all your friends with your unique, trendy,
fresh handmade treasures from Greater Morgantown.
