It all started more than 20 years ago to honor DEA agent - U.S. Marine Enrique "Kiki" Camarena and his informant who were slain by drug traffickers. They had been working in Mexico to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. Here in California, there was an immediate outpouring of support from Kiki's hometown community of the Imperial Valley. And, the following year, in 1986, they organized the first Red Ribbon Week to commemorate his death. The red ribbon represents the pledge: "no use of illegal drugs and no illegal use of legal drugs." The first national campaign took place two years later in 1988. And, each year since to honor Officer Camarena's vision for drug free communities - millions of Americans wear red ribbons or wristbands to show their commitment to substance abuse prevention and the promotion of safe, healthy lifestyles. Elementary aged school kids don't necessarily know much - if anything - about drugs, drug use or abuse. Nor do we want to bombard them with things too sophisticated. So, at Arroyo, we take this as an opportunity to reinforce and highlight the importance of making good choices for healthy bodies. We have a red-themed week filled with healthy activities and projects. Thanks for helping us celebrate by having your kid(s) take part in our Red Ribbon Week.... Schedule of Events Wear Monday, October 20th "Too Bright for Drugs" All students receive red wristbands to wear all week! Students who attended decorated their punch cards and received a first "punch". They all seemed excited for the cards and eager to participate in the Clubs. We're looking forward to a fun year of lunch clubs in the library! The next Library Lunch Bunch meeting will be Brown Bag Book Club (BBBC) on 10/29. To participate, students must read or listen to the featured book and then respond to the questions on the special BBBC paper bag. Paper bags can be picked up from the library, or parents can download the ticket here and cut and attach it to a brown paper lunch bag. Completed bags are students' tickets to the BBBC meeting. The featured book this month is Two by Kathryn Otoshi, which tells an important story of friendship, threesomes, and self-discovery. It's a quick read but can generate some very meaningful discussion, including among upper graders (and even for adults!). Parents, if your child wishes to participate, please help him/her get a copy of it. Remember, all Library Lunch Bunch meetings are independent of each other so kids can come regularly or sporadically or just try one! October 23 child. Please consider signing up if you haven't yet!
