Under Beichner's direction, the Bulls’ wrestling program has undergone a complete turnaround both on and off the mat. In the seven seasons with Beichner as head coach, Buffalo has posted a 67-39-2 dual meet record. Beichner has guided the Bulls to doubledigit win seasons in four of the seven years he has been at UB. Buffalo sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in 2001, and is sending freshman sensation Kyle Cerminara to the NCAAs this season. That snaps a span of four straight seasons in which UB had qualified at least three wrestlers for the NCAAs. In Beichner’s seven seasons at UB, he has guided Bulls’ wrestlers to the NCAA Championships on 17 occasions. Beichner arrived at UB for the 19951996 season, and guided the Bulls to immediate success. UB posted a 10-4 dual meet record after going winless the previous season. The Bulls captured third place in the East Coast Wrestling Association Tournament and sent two wrestlers to the NCAA Championships where they each posted wins, the first-ever tournament wins for UB since its return to Division I. Additionally, coach Beichner was recognized for his efforts, receiving the New York State Division I and ECWA Coach-of-the-Year awards, in addition to Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Coach-of-the-Year honors. In his second season, Beichner guided the team to a 12-2-2 record, the most wins in over a decade for the program. Again the Bulls finished third at the ECWA Tournament. Jason Wartinger 2 qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third time in his career. In addition, the Bulls finished in the top five in all five tournaments they participated in under Beichner’s leadership. During his third season, three was the key number for Beichner’s Bulls. For the third straight season, UB finished in third place at the ECWA Tournament. In addition, the Bulls made another step towards national prominence by sending three qualifiers to the NCAA National Championships, the third consecutive year Beichner had guided wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament. In addition to the team’s success, Beichner helped the UB program and the Western New York area by bringing the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic to UB’s Alumni Arena. This national tournament showcases some of the top wrestlers in the country at each weight class going against each other as a preview of possible National Championship matchups. All told, there were six National Champions and 19 AllAmericans from that season who competed at UB’s Alumni Arena. In 1998-1999, Beichner continued the program’s upward climb as the Bulls entered the Mid-American Conference, a conference that had two teams finish in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships the previous year. UB finished third in the regular season and fourth at the MAC Championships. Additionally, the Bulls had three qualifiers for the NCAA Championships for the second straight season. During the 1999-2000 season, Buffalo finished with an 11-5 dual meet record. Within the MAC, the Bulls posted a 2-3 mark, leaving them in fourth place. UB also placed fourth at the MAC Championships. Once again, three of Buffalo’s wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships. In his first seven years, Beichner has made a tremendous impact at the University at Buffalo. He has taken the program from a team with a combined six wins in the four years prior to his arrival to 67 wins in his first seven seasons. UB head coach Jim Beichner completes the 2001-2002 season with .630 winning percentage. 2001-2002 Bulls’ Wrestling 10 years of Division I athletics University at Buffalo COACHING STAFF Those 67 wins make Beichner the secondwinningest coach in UB history. He has brought some of the best that collegiate wrestling has to offer to the Western New York area and continues to build the program into a team that is making trips to the NCAA Championships on a regular basis. Prior to his appointment at UB, Beichner served seven years as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh under head coach Rande Stottlemeyer. At Pittsburgh, Beichner was heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of the program, budgeting, and other administrative duties in addition to his coaching and recruiting responsibilities. "I was fortunate that Rande gave me the freedom to do what was necessary to get the job done," Beichner commented. "He never put restrictions on my methods, but instead made everything accessible to me at all times." During his seven-year tenure as an assistant, the Panthers were ranked in the National Top 25 six times, reaching as high as 13 th in 1988. During Beichner's last season as an assistant in 1994-1995, Pittsburgh was invited to the National Duals Tournament for the first time in school history. En route to their eighth-place finish, the Panthers defeated traditional wrestling powers Oregon State and Arizona State, as well as intrastate rival Penn State for the first time in 19 years. Beichner's coaching career began at Clarion University following an outstanding collegiate wrestling career for the Golden Eagles. During his four years, Beichner was twice an NCAA Division I All-American at 190 pounds, recorded 125 career victories (tied for third all-time in Clarion history), was twice selected to wrestle in the prestigious East-West AllStar Classic and posted a rare three undefeated dual meet seasons. In addition to captaining Clarion to only its third undefeated dual meet season in over 38 years of competition, Beichner is 11 th in career dual meet wins with 49 and posted the third-best single season record in school history at 40-4 during the 1984-1985 season. In May of 2000, Beichner was inducted into the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame. It was while coaching at Clarion following his wrestling career that Beichner learned the inner workings of a collegiate BEICHNER’S C AREER HIGHLIGHTS • Inducted into the Cassadaga (NY) Hall of Fame in 1982 • Four-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion at 190 pounds, spanning from 1982-1986 • Two-time Eastern Wrestling League Champion at 190 pounds, during both 1984 and 1985 • Posted three consecutive undefeated dual meet seasons from 1983-1986 Beichner (left), alongside assistants Sean Gibbs (middle), and Tom Tomeo (right). wrestling program from one of the winningest coaches in history, Bob Bubb. Currently the Executive Director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association, Bubb had a profound influence on Beichner and his coaching style. "Coach Bubb was a very regimented coach who ran a strict program," Beichner says. "However, he was more than just a wrestling coach in that he was always there if you were having problems or needed any kind of help. If I can do anything here at UB, I'd like to emulate the way he ran his program and be as successful as he's been." Beichner began his association with wrestling at Cassadaga Valley High School, located 80 miles southwest of Buffalo. Wrestling under head coach Cliff Blum, Beichner was a three-time New York State High School Tournament placewinner and an inductee into the Cassadaga Hall of Fame in 1982. "I consider coach Blum to be one of the best coaches I've ever worked with. The majority of my wrestling technique and all the things I've accomplished come as a result of his wrestling program." While Beichner is only completing his seventh season as coach of the Bulls, he has already taken substantial steps towards his goal of building them into a competitive national Top 25 wrestling program. Beichner and his wife Diane have three children - Jake (9), Sam (8), and Grace (2). 2001-2002 Bulls’ Wrestling • Two-time NCAA Division I AllAmerican at 190 pounds, during the 1984-1985 and 1985-1986 seasons • Two-time East-West All-Star selection, for both the 1983-1984 and 1984-1985 seasons • Recorded a career collegiate record of 125-22, while also registering 32 falls • His 125 career victories are third best in Clarion’s elite wrestling history • Inducted into the Eastern Wrestling League Hall of Fame in 1983 • Voted the 1995-1996 East Coast Wrestling Association Coach of the Year • Named the 1995-1996 Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Head Coach of the Year • Voted the 1995-1996 New York State Division I Coach of the Year • Inducted into the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame in May of 2000 • Has coached 13 separate UB wrestlers into the NCAAs on 17 occasions during his seven years at Buffalo 3 University at Buffalo 10 years of Division I athletics COACHING STAFF Sean Gibbs Tom Tomeo Assistant Coach 7th Season Pittsburgh - 1993 Assistant Coach 2nd Season Clarion - 1998 Sean Gibbs is completing his seventh season as an assistant coach and coordinator of recruiting for the Bulls. An integral part of UB's success the last several years, Gibbs is largely responsible for the recruiting efforts for the program. Before joining the Bulls at the beginning of the 1995-1996 season, Gibbs wrestled four years at the University of Pittsburgh where current UB head coach Jim Beichner was an assistant. Although this is his first collegiate coaching position, Gibbs has previous coaching experience as an assistant at Lake High School in Ohio. During Gibbs' tenure, Lake captured third place in the State Dual Championship and had four individual placewinners. Over the past summer, Gibbs served as the head coach of the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s All-American Tour which took a group of 16 wrestlers overseas to wrestle in Bulgaria and Paris. Gibbs brings a wealth of wrestling knowledge to UB's program, much of which he developed during his four-year career at Pittsburgh. The two-time NCAA Division I National qualifier at 167 pounds earned a pair of top three finishes in the 1992 and 1993 Eastern Wrestling League Tournaments. Gibbs also posted the second-best record in Pittsburgh history as a senior with a 40-10 record and his 24-9 record as a junior is fifth-best all-time. The Panthers' 1993 Most Valuable Wrestler, Gibbs is currently fourth on the school's all-time wins list with 90, and helped the Panthers to a National Top 25 ranking all four years of his career. Gibbs and his wife Cynthia have two children - Caitlyn (3) and Graham (2). Jerry Seawood Volunteer Assistant Coach 1st Season Syracuse - 1998 Seawood is finishing his first season as a member of the Buffalo coaching staff following his wrestling career at Syracuse, in which he lettered for three seasons. The four-time Greco-Roman All-American received his degree in general management and retail management. 4 Tom Tomeo is completing his second year as an assistant coach for the Bulls. Tomeo is primarily responsible for helping instruct the younger wrestlers on proper techniques and what it takes to compete and win at the Division I level. A graduate of Clarion University, Tomeo was a two-time team captain, a two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion and a Division I All-American in 1998, finishing eighth in the 142-pound weight class at the NCAA Tournament. Tomeo comes to Buffalo from Cumberland College where he was an assistant coach two years ago, helping the Indians produce six All-Americans - including the NAIA National Heavyweight Champion - and helping lead them to a sixth-place team finish at the National Tournament. A native of Grove City, PA, Tomeo also served as an assistant coach at Slippery Rock University after earning his bachelor's degree in biology from Clarion in 1998. Tomeo’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, sports and a number of other outdoor recreational activities. He is also a relative of the late North Carolina State basketball coach Jim Valvano. Josh States Student Assistant Coach 1st Season Buffalo States is finishing his first season as an assistant coach for the Bulls. He is not a stranger to the UB wrestling program however, having completed a prestigious four year career at Buffalo. During his senior season, the two-time NCAA qualifier enjoyed unparalleled success at UB. He completed the year with an undefeated 5-0 mark in MAC matches, and took first place at the Bloomsburg Invitational and New York State Collegiate Championships. He also broke the school record for career overall victories with 102. A graduate of nearby Lockport High School, States set school records under coach Pat Seidel for career wins with 171, and falls with 101. 2001-2002 Bulls’ Wrestling 10 years of Division I athletics University at Buffalo CERMINARA PROFILE Kyle Cerminara Freshman Lewiston, NY Lewiston-Porter The Cerminara File: Weight Class: .................... 197 2001-2002 Record: ........ 25-11 Career Record: ............... 25-11 2001-2002: Was ranked fourth at 197 pounds in the MidAmerican Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll... In your senior year in high school you went 42-0, now as a freshman at UB you’ve qualified for the NCAA Championships. Has the success just carried over? High school wrestling is very different from wrestling at the college level. In high school, you can get by with just being a better athlete than everyone else. At college, everyone is a great athlete and you need to be more in tune with the technical aspect of the sport. I worked real hard on using better technique and improving my athleticism just so that I could compete. The transition has been tough. Will your experience from the High School Nationals last year – where you placed fifth – help you at all in preparation for the NCAA Championships in Albany? It may help in the sense that it was a real big tournament with a lot of competitors. You have to be prepared to wrestle a lot of matches in one day. But I think what’s helped even more is what has gone on this season. Being in a Division I wrestling room everyday, and working with Coach (Jim) Beichner and Coach (Sean) Gibbs has helped even more than anything else. During the season, you have been most successful in tournament competition. Do you prefer that format as opposed to wrestling in a dual meet? If you notice, my first match at most tournaments is often my worst one, as far as the results go. That’s almost like a warm-up match in a sense. I do feel like I get better as the day goes along. That may be why I’ve had more success in tournaments than in dual meets – I get better as I wrestle more matches. Going back to the start of the season, chart your progress as a wrestler. I think I’ve changed a lot. My conditioning is so much farther along than it was at the beginning of the season. Most importantly though, I am mentally tougher. I know every match is going to be a battle, and it takes mental toughness to be able to compete at this level. You posted a perfect 5-0 Mid-American Conference regular season record and then went on to win the postseason tournament. What enabled you to do this? We started in Northern Illinois where I won my first two MAC matches in a dual meet with the host Huskies and Eastern Michigan. At that point, I realized that there were only three more MAC matches on the season, so I kept the ball rolling. At the MAC Championships, I knew I was expected to win, having come in undefeated and as the top seed. I didn’t want to let anyone down, it was my tournament to lose and I wasn’t going to do that. 6 What are your emotions heading into the NCAAs? I’m real excited. It’s an honor just to compete with so many great athletes and to get the opportunity to become a National Champion. This is what wrestling is all about, and going to the NCAA Championships and shooting to become an All-American or to win a National Championship is every collegiate wrestler’s goal. There’s a chance you could face a guy like Cael Sanderson – who is a three-time NCAA Champion who has never lost a collegiate match – at some point in this tournament. What would that be like for you? I’d love to take on a guy like Cael Sanderson. Only 32 other people in the country have a shot at doing that right now, and I’m one of them. To have the opportunity to beat the best college wrestler would be a great honor. What have the seniors on your team had to offer to you? Have guys like Dave Guarino – who went to the NCAAs in 2001 – helped you out with anything in particular? Yeah, they’ve all offered some advice. They tell me that even though I’m a freshman, I’m good enough to compete with anyone. They all have faith in me and continue to tell me to believe in myself and to be confident. They’ve been real supportive, as they have been all season long. You say that your greatest athletic influences are your father, along with former coach Eric Gross. Can you expand on that a little more? Ever since I can remember, my dad has always been there. He bought weights for our basement and he showed me how to lift. That got me ahead of the curve, and when I became a freshman in high school I already had a couple years of lifting weights behind me. When I started high school, I really wanted to dedicate myself to becoming a great wrestler. Eric Gross came to coach at Lewiston-Porter after graduating from UB, and he was the best wrestling coach for me. We’d do morning workouts together, or whatever I wanted to do. Last year, when he was the head coach at Medina High School, he still helped me train everyday for the High School Nationals. Both of those guys helped me to become the wrestler I am today. Who’s headed to Albany to watch you in the NCAA Championships? What does it mean for the tournament to be held so close to home? Both of my parents are coming. I’m happy that it’s so close, because they can just drive down to Albany and enjoy every minute of it. Eric Gross and his wife are also going. Again, it was my parents along with Eric who have helped me grow as a wrestler, so it’s great they will all be there. 2001-2002 Bulls’ Wrestling 10 years of Division I athletics University at Buffalo PROGRAM HISTORY NCAA Qualifiers under Coach Jim Beichner Chad Caros, 1998 Vince DeAugustine, 1998 Joe Downey, 2000 John Eschenfelder, 1999 & 2001 Dave Guarino, 2001 Marcus Hutchins, 1996 (Also in 1993 & 1995) Shawn Kegel, 2000 & 2001 Jeromy McVige, 1998 Brian Schaal, 1999 Jake Schaus, 1999 Josh States, 2000 & 2001 Jason Wartinger, 1996 & 1997 Kyle Cerminara, 2002 2001-2002 Bulls’ Wrestling 7 University at Buffalo 10 years of Division I athletics 2001-2002 SEASON 2001-2002 Tournaments 2001-2002 Dual Meets (6-10, 1-4 MAC) Date Opponent Score Nov. 25 at Northern Illinois* L, 13-22 Nov. 25 vs. Eastern Mich.* at Northern Ill.
