This year, we’re trying a new
experiment – the Champion of Champions Dual. Wrestlers, fans, and coaches alike have often wondered aloud

Bill Kays has taught Physics and Chemistry at
Mexico High School for 28 years and for the last
26 of those years, he has been the wrestling
coach, too. He lives in the village of Mexico with
his wife of 33 years Maureen, and has four children, Conor, Eamon, Liam, and Katharine, and a
grandson Kaden. He is only the 5th coach in the
56 years since Sparky Rector started the program
in
Mexico in 1957. Bill also coached football for
20 seasons. He has been an OHSL League representative, and the Section 3 assistant coordinator
for wrestling for many years. His teams are noted
for being tough and wrestling hard, but also for being good role models for younger
wrestlers. He has always sought out the best competition during the season to prepare his wrestlers to compete at the highest levels and he has had a very successful
career:
*3 Section 3 Interclass Tournament Championships
*1 Section 3 Dual Meet Championship, Teams have participated in all but 1.
*6 Section 3 Class B Championships
*12 OHSL League Championships
*8 Scholar Athlete Teams (including this year)
*40 Section 3 Champions
*44 State Qualifiers
*26 State Place Finishers
*6 State Runners up
*1 State Champion
*7 National High School All-Americans
*3 NCAA Tournament Qualifiers
*Career Record of 350-125-2
His teams have been ranked in New York many times including 15 th in the Sportswriter’s Poll this year, and placed 2nd in the New York State Championships this
year.

Sectional and State Tournament Officials
Alex Herringshaw capped an exceptional season by winning gold in Albany
and joins the elite group of New York State Champions. As a sophomore, Alex
has already set the record for career wins at Holland Patent with a 163-27 career record. He is already a 4x varsity letter winner for the Golden Knights and
is a 2x Class Champion, 2x Section III Champion, 4x Section III Placewinner,
3x New York State Championship Qualifier, and a 2x New York State Championship Placewinner. With two season to go (unless he goes pro early), Alex
still has a shot to break the other school records he has already set, including:
Section III’s State Tournament Officials
 Single Season Takedowns (73)
 Single Season Backpoints (149)
 Single Season Wins (50)
Congratulations, Alex, the 2014 Division II Wrestler of the Year!
Section III’s Sectional Tournament Officials
David Wise guided the Liverpool
Warriors to the 2014 CNYCL Championship with an 18-5 record. Overall, Coach Wise has compiled a 92-44
record. When you consider that 23 of
those losses were in his first year, as
he took over a program in shambles,
that means he’s 92-21 since! The
Warrior season culminated with a
second place finish at the Division
One Section III Wrestling Championships on February 15th. This represents the highest sectional placing in
Liverpool history. Considering the
Warriors did that without a single
champion, this is testament to the
“team” concept Coach Wise is instilling in his young team.
As a wrestler, Coach Wise wrestled for the mighty Fulton Red Raiders and
captained the 1989 New York State Dual Meet Champions. His wrestling career came to glorious finish that year, as he won the Section III Wrestling
Championship at 167 pounds.
David has coached two section three champions, eight class champions, and 31
sectional place winners. As you can find only five seniors in the Warrior
lineup, expect to see Coach Wise and his Liverpool wrestlers competing for
top honors for quite some time to come.
David is married to Debra and they have three children – Madison, Dylan, and
Blake. The Friends of Section III Wrestling congratulates and honors Coach
Wise as the Division I Coach of the Year.
Ben Honis leaves Section III
Wrestling a two-time champion with 124 wins. His senior
campaign, Ben tasted defeat
only twice – both to NYS
Champion Reggie Williams.
He gave the state champion by
far his toughest match in a 7-5
semi-final loss. With the heart
of a champion, Ben wrestled
back and took third in one of
the toughest brackets in Albany.
Before he was rolling up 21
pins this year on his way to
the sectional championship,
Ben was the starting fullback on the Jamesville-Dewitt football
team and scored All-CNY second team honors. In the future, he
will be attending Thompkins County Community College with
the hopes of wrestling for the Cornell Big Red some day.
Congratulations Ben, the 2014 Division I Wrestler of the Year!
Division I
Exceptional Senior Award
Kevin Paul
Kevin Paul has had an exceptional wrestling
career at Baker High School in Baldwinsville.
Kevin wrestled for 5 years posting a career
record of 146 – 33 with 87 varsity pins. He
helped lead his team to 3 consecutive Section
III Class AA titles & 2 Section III, Division 1
Championships. Kevin was also a 4x Section
III, Class AA Individual Champion & a 3x
Section III, Division 1 Champion. This year
Kevin Paul represented Section 3 as the sportsmanship recipient at the
NYSPHSAA Wresting Championship in Albany, N.Y.at the Times Union Arena. Kevin carried the Section 3 flag and led both Division I and II teams into
the Arena.
· Career Record
146 – 33
· 87 Career Pins
· 4x Section III Class AA Champion
· 3x Section III, Division 1 Champion
Congratulations, Kevin, on a spectacular career.
Division II
Exceptional Senior Award
Laken Cook
The career of Laken Cook ends in elite
company, joining the few New York
State wrestlers in the 200 win club,
closing out his career at 207-26. His
stellar senior season finds 43 wins
against just two losses (both to NYS
Champion Rifanburg). Laken was a six
time Section III Class Champion, five time Section III Champion, and a three
time New York State Championship Placewinner (4 th 2010, 5th 2011, and 2nd
2014). He was also a two year letterman in football and served as wrestling
team captain the last two years. It will seem odd next year to attend section
three wrestling events and not see Laken warming up on the sidelines. Your
contributions to Ilion/Central Valley and Section Three Wrestling will be sorely missed.
