BUILDING COMMUNITY – with Morley Community School
From the wide smiles on their
youthful faces to the light in
their eyes, you could tell this
experience will remain in their
memories for a long time.
Two Wheel View recently had the honour
of working with an incredible group of First
Nations youth from Morley Community
School. As a result of support from the
Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation, we
were able to provide 10 students with our Bike
Club program over the course of seven weeks.
As a special addition to the program, eight
members of the Bike Club, along Two Wheel
View’s experienced trip leaders and two of
their teachers, biked from Castle Junction
back to Morley over four days. At the end
of the trip they proudly rode into their
schoolyard, covered in mud but encouraged
by the support of their entire school, who
came out of class to welcome them home
with signs and cheers.
Upon successful completion of the Bike Club
program, each of the members earned a bike,
lock and helmet of their very own.

We were thrilled to hear that the students
were using their bikes to get to school,
a few of them having previously struggled
to get there. Recently, there have been reports
of Bike Club participants attending youth
activities and workshops hosted by the local
youth centre, their new bikes providing them
with the transportation to access these resources.
We are proud of the accomplishments of
our first Morley Bike Club and we are already
looking forward to our 2015 program thanks
to renewed support from the Strachan Hartley
Legacy Foundation.

Summer is a time for being outside, being active and making memories. We had the chance to do all three
as TWV spent four weeks this summer delivering our brand new Bike Camp program at Cardel Place,
a recreational facility in northeast Calgary. Campers had the chance to learn bike mechanics, play games
and explore their community with daily bike rides. Our leadership team of Sasha, Mike, Gwen and Tra did
a fantastic job and thoroughly enjoyed working with Cardel Place staff to make incredible summer memories.

Being able to go to Argentina with Two Wheel View was such a gift!
The diversity within our group (including different languages, biking abilities and previous experiences) made for an
unforgettable trip. Watching Argentina win the semi-finals in the World Cup, eating dulce de leche with absolutely everything,
camping out next to a High School graduation, singing Hit the Road Jack around the fire, camping out at a trout farm,
riding 40km downhill through a rainforest, and spending a night at Bicichangos were some of my favorite moments.
I will forever treasure this trip and those that I journeyed with!

GOING THE DISTANCE
for Two Wheel View
In the spring we had the pleasure of meeting the incredible
Justin Chadwick, who was determined to ride across Canada
in thirty days to support TWV’s Expedition Program. Justin’s
dedication to this adventure inspired us all. Rather than
recap his experience, I thought I’d pull a bit from his blog –
his experience, in his own words.
This was at the same time the hardest, yet the easiest thing
I’ve done in my life. Let me explain what I mean by that…
The hardest in the sense that this was obviously a very
physically and mentally challenging endeavor – I pushed
my body and my mind to (and at times beyond) what I had
up until now perceived as ‘the limit’. Well, I have set new
‘limits’ for myself – only to be pushed once again as
I continue in life.
The easiest – being on a bicycle just feels right to me, it is
when I feel I am my happiest and most confident version
of myself. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity
to do what I truly love to do – all day, everyday, for 29
days. There were definitely some days that were hard to get
through, days where I’d have to focus only on the next 10km
while at the same time not losing sight of the ‘x’ # of days that
were still in front of me. It was a funny sort of fine-line that
Justin crosses into another province on his cross-Canada trek for TWV
Justin’s Going the Distance for Two Wheel View Campaign
raised $30,000 for scholarships for youth who might not
otherwise have the resources for a life-changing adventure.
There is still time to donate and read more about the ride
on Justin’s website, www.goingthedistance4twv.com
I often found myself internally toying with.
But, I can honestly say that, no matter how physically beat
up I felt, each morning I looked forward to the day of riding
that lay ahead. We live in a beautiful and amazingly diverse
country. I am lucky to have seen it this way.
Reflections from a TWV Trip Alumni
Hello, my name is Devon Ptashnik and I participated in an expedition from Drumheller to Banff in 2013. The trip has taken place
a little over a year ago now, and it continues to affect me every day of my life.
I learned a lot throughout my experience with Two Wheel View, way more than I ever expected to! I learned about not only the
most efficient ways of utilizing a bicycle and how to pack panniers, (I learned what panniers are as well!) but also numerous life
skills. The trip provided me with an experience that benefited me in every way, and it continues to today.
On my trip I learned to be more accepting. You don’t know what someone’s been through, how their day is going, or where they’ve
come from; this helped me become more positive throughout everyday life as well. It’s extremely difficult to put my experience into
words because it’s impacted me so much. If the opportunity arose again, I’d do it in a heartbeat! Two Wheel View is an absolutely
amazing establishment; I really love the atmosphere that comes with the Two Wheel View name!
