Walk, 400 Duane Street. Entertainment includes music from the Vivaldi Strings,
One Voice Choir and the Glenbard South High School Madrigal Singers. Craft
activities for children will take place as well in the Youth Department.

Candidates for
Village Offices:
Dec. 6 Town Hall
Meeting
T
he Glen Ellyn Civic Betterment
Party will hold a Town Hall
Meeting on Saturday, December 6,
9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Glen Ellyn Civic
Center. Candidates for three Village
Trustee positions and four Library Board
positions will make presentations at the
Town Meeting, which will be simulcast on
community cable television.
Residents can cast their vote anytime
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glen Ellyn
Civic Center. Those individuals with the
most votes at the Town Hall Meeting and
through early voting will be on the ballot
in the April 2015 election with Civic
Betterment Party endorsement. Early
voting will be scheduled during the week
prior to the Town Meeting. Residents are
encouraged to attend the Town Meeting to
cast their vote this fall and in April when
the slate of candidates comes up for formal

n Correct roof and sump drains to avoid discharging water
that can freeze on the sidewalk, driveway or street.
n Avoid the use of portable heaters. Portable heaters have been
found to be one of the major causes of home fires.
n Have your furnace or boiler inspected and in proper
operation for winter use.
n Consider making home energy improvements and
investigate available rebates.
n Comply with decorative holiday lighting regulations.
n Contact Glen Ellyn’s Planning and Development
Department at 630-547-5250 if adequate heating is not
provided in your rented unit.

Holiday Light Strands
Collection
T
o keep used holiday light strands out of our landfills,
the Village has instituted a light strand recycling
program.
Residents can bring holiday lights to the Civic Center from
Monday, November 24, through Friday, February 13. All
holiday light strands, as well as extension cords, will be
accepted.
A drop-off location will be available on the first floor of the
Civic Center, 535 Duane Street, near the Cashier’s Office.
Glen Ellyn Fire Company Donations
To help fund the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire
Company, the Village Board approved a
monthly fee for Glen Ellyn residents last
December, which is included on the Village’s
monthly services bill to residents and business
owners. Additional community donations,
however, help to augment the equipment needs of this volunteer
organization, which is made up of 60 plus volunteer firefighters
who have made an extraordinary commitment to safeguarding
our community. If you would like to make an end-of-the-year
donation to the Fire Company, please mail it to: Glen Ellyn
Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 460, Glen Ellyn, IL 60138
or drop it off at either fire station – 524 Pennsylvania Avenue
or 681 Taft Avenue in the drop box. Please show your support
by making a generous donation. Residents are reminded that
telephone solicitations are not endorsed by the Village.

Historic Preservation Commission Awards Program

Commission supports homeowners
and builders who help preserve our Village’s
historic character. Nominations are accepted
January 1 through April 1 of each year for
projects completed within the prior calendar
year. Each year, the Glen Ellyn Historic
Preservation Awards program honors projects
in four categories.

The Streetscape Compatibility Award is
presented in recognition of an outstanding
effort to construct a new home or building
in an architectural style and scale that
contributes to the preservation of Glen
Ellyn’s historic streetscapes. A home can be

are judged on their compatibility with the

On the first Saturday morning of each
month, the Chief of Police plays host to
interested residents who would like to
interact with law enforcement personnel in a
non-enforcement environment. Participants
can discuss neighborhood issues, such as
traffic or parking; seek information on
various police programs; and learn about
specific police duties and responsibilities,
such as investigations, traffic accident
reconstructions and evidence collections.
Coffee with the Cops sessions are held from
8 - 10 a.m. on the second floor of the Civic
Center and pre-registration is not required.
Bring your children and grandchildren for
gingerbread decorating and a breakfast with
Santa at “Home Sweet Home,” Saturday,
December 6, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. All proceeds
benefit Family Shelter Service.

Greg Mathews Named
Village Attorney
Greg Mathews has been appointed
as the Village’s new attorney.
Mathews has spent most of his life
in Glen Ellyn where he attended
elementary school and high school
at Glenbard West; he reportedly
holds the football record for most
yards passing in a single game for
the Hilltoppers at 269.
Mathews received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1977
and a law degree from Indiana University in 1980. He worked as
a trial attorney for more than two decades, handling jury trials in
Illinois and in several state and federal courts across the country,
before he became involved in municipal corporate law and litigation.
Mathews served as Village trustee from 1993 to 1997 and finished
the term as Acting Village President on the vote of his co-trustees.
Mathews served as Village President from 2001 to 2005 and served
on the DuPage Water Commission.
In May of 2013 Mathews began service to the Village as its attorney
as a private practitioner. In July of this year the Village invited him
to join the Village staff on a full-time basis.

Keep Hydrants Clear in Winter
An important safety precaution after heavy snowfalls is to clear
the snow between the street and fire hydrant. When you “adopt
a fire hydrant” near your home, you ensure it is accessible to the
Fire Company in times of emergency. Also, it is best to wait until
the street is plowed before digging out the hydrant. Talk with
your neighbors and enlist the whole neighborhood in staying
safe this winter by clearing fire hydrants.
Christina Coyle was recently named
as the Village of Glen Ellyn’s new
Finance Director. Coyle formerly
served as the Village’s Assistant
Finance Director, and most recently,
as the Interim Finance Director.
Prior to joining the Village staff,
Coyle was a manager in the public
auditing practice of Baker Tilly
Virchow Krause, LLP, in Oak
Brook, IL, where she specialized in
performing audits for the municipal and not-for-profit sector.
Coyle is a Certified Public Accountant and a graudate of the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she doublemajored in finance and French.
Coyle, who resides in Wheaton, is married with two children. In
her spare time she enjoys cooking, reading and biking.

be responsible for shoveling the walkway in
front of their house for the safety of everyone.
Some additional reminders include:
3 Remove snow from fire hydrants, so
that they are visible in an emergency.
3 Shoveling snow into the street is
prohibited, since it creates an unsafe
condition for drivers.
3 After a significant snowfall, clear any
catch basin in the event of a quick thaw.
3 The only feasible method of
snowplowing is using side-delivery
snowplows — which, unfortunately,
may cause an accumulation of snow at
the end of driveways.
3 There is no parking on Village streets
after a 2-inch or greater snowfall until
the streets have been plowed.

from November through March. It will
take place east of Main Street and north of
the Union Pacific railroad tracks. This work
is designed to maintain clearance heights,
remove dead wood, perform corrective
pruning and help maintain healthy trees.

carbon monoxide poisoning. As the
heating season begins, be sure your
furnace flue is free of debris by using
a qualified heating technician who can
help to ensure that everything is working
properly. Carbon monoxide detectors are
now mandated by state law for all dwellings
and can be purchased at area hardware
stores.
v The last yard waste collection for this
year will take place on Monday, November
24. Yard waste stickers can be purchased at
the Cashier’s Office and local retailers.
