Statewide Teenager Research
2007
Presented by:
November 6, 2007
Background & Methodology
The Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma seeks to gain a better understanding of the
opinions and perceptions of unchurched Oklahoma teenagers regarding church, the Bible, God,
Jesus Christ, and other topics. In order to do this, a comprehensive statewide survey was
conducted among 483 randomly selected households. Teenagers were recruited from within
these households who fit the psychographically unchurched screener, as developed by the
BGCO and Equip Research. This yields a sample error of +/- 4.7% at the 95% confidence level.
In addition to the study of unchurched teenagers, a survey was taken among churched
teenagers as well to provide a baseline for comparison.
In order to accomplish the Churched Teenager portion of the survey, the BGCO and Equip
Research created a “churched teenager” survey that was the same as the “unchurched
teenager” survey, exceptions being those questions that applied only to that particular
audience (ie church attendance, etc.). This survey was then distributed to a random selection
of churches across the state of Oklahoma. The individual churches then administered the
survey to their students and sent the completed surveys to Equip Research and Consulting.
A total of 1,013 surveys were completed and an overall database of 843 responses (due to
weighting and representation) was created. This yields a sample error of +/- 3.4% at the 95%
confidence level.

BOTH: Life Influences
The following table shows the average “level of influence” of the available options for both
unchurched and churched respondents. Parents held the highest level influence regardless of
churched status. However, churched respondents indicated lower levels of influence on nearly
all factors. The verbatim responses show that these students are more influenced by non-listed
people, such as youth group leader or minister.

not to the extent that I do things I'd
regret.

administered the survey, possibly
their Youth Minister]

I wish I could say that I know God
well enough for Him to be the only
influence in my life but I don' think I

Probably because I am always doing

Probably because I have to work on
Saturdays and sometimes I work

don't want to fall asleep in church.
Probably because I wouldn't get a
ride to church. Plus my family like
my parents aren't really involved in

Probably because my parents don't
have enough money to pay for the
gas to go back and forth from
church.
Probably because the church I
usually go to I live too far away to go

Probably just sleeping in or

what you do. And sometimes I’m

'cause it’s the way to go.
I don't know... my friends and I talk

about it.
I just listened to them; I didn't really
have a reaction.
I just sat there quietly and listened
and asked a few questions about it.
I like to talk about Jesus with my
friends.
I liked it.
I listened to what he had to say and
heard him out.
I listened
I listened and asked questions
I listened and didn't disagree

I started going to church
I think it should be a person’s choice
what they believe in and they
pushed it really hard
I think it's fine.
I think it's good.
I think they are correct I believe the
bible
I thought he was crazy
I thought it was alright.
I thought it was cool (Repeated 3
times)
I thought it was fun.
I thought it was good that they were
spreading the Word.
I thought it was interesting.
I thought it was cool.
I thought it was more like a story
book until I began to accept it. The
bible is one of the most historically
accurate documents in the world.
I thought it was ok
I thought it was pretty cool
I thought it was pretty cool that
someone was watching over me and
everyone else all over the world.
I thought it was pretty interesting.
I thought it was really cool. It’s cool
that there’s someone up there
watching over us. And that we can
ask him for help and sometimes he'll
answer your prayers and sometimes
he won't.
I thought it was interesting and I
thought I should learn more
I told them I was Jewish so we just
talked about each other’s religions
I tried to get more involved in it
I wanted to give it a try
I wanted to know more
I was a little confused.
I was amazed (Repeated 3 times)

I was kind of confused but I didn't

I was kind of in shock I did not

I was like ok basically whatever
I was like ok yes,
I was little skeptical but then I
learned more and got more into it,
started to believe it
I was little, so I didn't know what to
believe
I was little, so I probably thought she
was crazy
I was little, who's Jesus?
I was little... so i was just curious
I was offended
I was opened minded at first, but

I was young so it really didn't matter

I was young, so I didn't think much
about it
I'd tell them that I needed to know

Christian.
I’ll think about it

"How could someone love me who doesn't know me?"
"I don't want to believe in a God." - friends
"Jesus is fake."
"Oh that's nice."
"Oh, you're into that?"
"OMG, why are they saying that"
"Whatever. I just don't believe."
"Yah, he's cool" and "Yah, ok, um hm".
A lot are very understanding.
A lot of people try not to think it, but they usually listen to you.
A lot of them are receptive but not always
A lot of time they disagree but other times they're quiet and listen but give their
opinions at times.
Act like they're not listening.
All different replies.
All of them
Alright
As if they have head it before, change the subject.
Asking quesions and "I need to but not this week/day" when I ask them why they say,
"I'm too busy" or "my boy/girlfriend is in town."
At first they act like they could care less, but in the end they normally come around.
At first, they dont want to and are hesitant, but occasionally they will listen.
At the beginning they tend to not really care, but if you keep trying you'll get to them
Awesome, good.
Badly.
Blank stare
Blow it off
By going to church
By going to church and evenings
Change subject
Coming to church.
Comprehensive, listening but not caring

Confused, unsure
Defensive embarassed curious
Deniable.
Deny it, ignore it, or be interested.
Depends (Repeated 4 times)
Depends on if it has been shoved down their throat or not. Shyish
Depends on the person you're talking to.
Depends on the person, some accept it, but some just blow Him off.
Depends on the person. (Repeated 3 times)
Depends on their own beliefs but usually at least a little shy.
Depends on their past experiences.
Depends on who you talk to.
Depends who it is.
Depends, but usually are open because they asked about it.
Did not care.
Didn't really listen (Repeated 2 times)
Different
Different words
Don't care or pay attention
Don't care, or thats really exciting
Don't care. (Repeated 2 times)
Don't really care
Don't really say much, but I keep talking
Don't talk to me about religion.
Don't wanna hear it. That's why I stopped everything, because I'm tired of having my
whole heart into it and nothing happening...
Don't want to talk about it.
Either angry and offesnive or wanting to know more.
Either say they already know, listen and nod a lot, ask questions or say they don't care
or say they believe something else.
Either they don't care or they are actually interested.
Fall asleep sometimes, say can we talk about this later. One didn't talk to me again.
Foreigners are receptive, Americans are not as receptive.
From me, they are offended (because of how I word it).
Good (Repeated 10 times)

He said he wanted to be a Christian, but he didn't want to be made fun of at school.
He said that's cool and walked off.
He was like, "I don't care".
They don’t always or they say, "Oh, I already go to church".
I absolutely love talking about Jesus!
I don't care is what they say.
I don't know.
I get excited
I go to church.
I hate you
I just talked them though their decisions.
I know about it, I just don't go to church.
I know I should believe in Him
I listen and want to learn more.
I listen intently.
I listen really good
I listen to what people have to say.
I love hear about Jesus, and even though I already know what they're telling me I still
love that other people are sharing the gospel and it's always fun to talk to them.
I love to hear about Jesus because I love Him.
I see if I believe the same thing.
I sit there and listen.
I think most people see the hypocritical side of Christianity, so most are nice and listen,
but don't really care, especially when they've seen that person out partying the night
before.
I think that some people get scared and don't want to face the truth.
I would listen
If they are searching, like at Falls Creek, they were very receptive. Friends haven't been
as receptive.
If they really want to know, they listen. If they aren't that interested, they pretend to
listen.
If they respect me, they listen
If they want to hear, they act interested. If they don't, they turn you away sometimes.
If they want to know they are really interested and if they aren't the stare at you but
don't really pay attention.
If you explain it right, they don't really hesitate to listen.
If you let them know that you care, they will listen more.
Ignorant
Ignore it.

I'm not sure.
I'm not sure. Uncomfortable maybe.
In a good way
In church and by people
In today's world, hardly anyone cares. Some people are interested, but a lot just don't
care.
In weird ways.
Indifferent
Interested, I liked it.
Interested
It depends on how bad off they are, or how open they are to the idea.
It depends on if you approach them the right way, if you aren't pushy they're usually
pretty open, if you push too much, they get offended
It depends on the person and their experiences.
It depends on the person, but they're usually open to what you have to say.
It depends on the person. (Repeated 2 times)
It depends on what kind of people you're around.
It depends on who you talk to and what they believe.
It depends, some people don't care and some want to know more.
It depends, sometimes interested, sometimes they act like they don't care.
It is always different.
It just depends on how much they are ready to handle. Some have been more
experienced in "church" than others. You take it at different levels.
It just depends on if they're open about hearing more. Now if it's your science teacher,
that's a different story.
It really just depends on what they believe and were taught.
It was a positive reaction
It was awkward.
I've gotten both positive and negative reactions.
I've never really done it before.
I've tried to tell several people but they did not want to believe in God, they try to argue
that "evolution is right".
Jesus is hated, avoided, and craved. Every person is so diffeent, so how could you
possibly ask me to lob everyone into one meaningless stereotypical body of people?
Jesus is my Savior and Lord. That is the only way to Heaven.
Kind of awkward
Kind of like they think I'm crazy.
Kind of like they're not interested.
Kind of weird at first.
Kind of ignore you.
Like it goes right through their head.

Like it's no big deal, like He's just like a thing you could get info if you feel like, but they
mostly don't feel like it.
Like shock, like wow, He sounds really amazing, I want to learn more about Him.
Like they "know just enough to hurt themselves"
Like they don't believe it.
Like they don't really care.
Like they get a fresh chance.
Like they know what you're going to say
Like they know, but then when you get to your point they really start to get touched.
Like they want to have a relationship with Him, but they're scared.
Like they've heard it all before and don't care.
Listen or sometimes not
Listened
Looked at me funny and walked away.
Mad
Mixed opinions
Most are interested and listen to what I have to say, unless they're just being nice by
listening.
Most are interested in what I have to say.
Most are just stuck in their own ways and they think I'm just brainwashed.
Most are kind of scared.
Most don't care. I get so frustrated.
Most go to church.
Most listen and like that I care enough to tell them about it.
Most of the people ask questions.
Most of the time they ask questions but sometimes they don't like to hear it.
Most of the time they don't really care, but when they do it's a great thing.
Most of the time, I get told off. Or to go away - Yes I go to a public school.
Most of the time, negatively.
Most of the time, they want to know more.
Most of them had asked me about it, so they were obviously interested.
Most people are like, "let's talk about this later". Some people are ready to hear more.
Most people don't really want to hear about it. They find away out of talking about it.
Most people either are really open to it and have lots of questions, or they don't even
listen.
Most people just don't care. They rather live how they want to.
Most people like debate or say they're already a Christian.
Most people really like it.
Most people to me are pretty confused
Most people will listen, but not always respond.
Most think it’s cool but don't really know what it is

Most will probably listen, but after you tell, they go back to living the way they do.
Most wish they got more into church.
Mostly, reluctant to what you’re saying, but if also opens up a deeper relationship with
that person and next time the topic comes us it's easier to talk about.
My friend asked my Mom if she can come to church but her parents won't always let
her.
My friend got offended because I was making her think her religion isn't true.
My friends were glad to hear about it.
My neighbors were like I'll have to go to church and start going.
Negative
Negatively
Negatively. I used to be one of those people. There's such a negative stigma associated
with the word Jesus. It's tough to get past the wall of preconceived negative ideas
people have about Christ.
No
No man, I'm saved, I don't need to go to church.
Normally
Not Good.
Not interested unless the Spirit is working.
Not many it seems like
Not real well.
Not really.

Not so good.
Not so well. They kind of listen.
Not too well.
Not very good.
Not very well but if you spend time with them then it gets better.
Not well
Not well or ask lots of questions.
Not willing to listen to what I am saying.
offended (sometimes), awkward, shy, rude

Oh or whatever
Oh, please.

To trust your life to Jesus.
To trust, Him and honest.
Told faith and good deeds.
Total surrender to His son. Admit you've sinned; believe that Jesus was raised from the

everything to make Him happy and that requires us losing our happiness and I'm not
willing to lose that!
