CROCKPOT PULLED PORK CHILI
December 10, 2013
I'm a food hoarder. And a really bad
dancer. If you don't know me well,
you will probably not understand
my humor. Therefore, I apologize
ahead of time. Thanks for listening
to my ramblings of my everchanging life and trusting my
kitchen mishaps. Your trust in me is
appreciated.
I need to tell you about something that’s pretty much the greatest thing to happen to me since paleo brownies.
Speaking of brownies, I might be making some this week for you. Just for you, definitely not for me. Anywho, I
went to the gym the other day, and when I came out, my car was on. But I had my keys in my hand. I was confused.
Like, uber confused. It wasn’t until I was handed to new remote starter to my car that I actually understood what
was happening. I got an early Christmas present!! Since it’s been so freezing cold here, my car got a little helpful
boost added to it while I was gone. So now, when I work the early shifts at the gym, I can start my car from bed and
my butt will be warm as soon as I sit down. Paleo brownies and a warm car at 6am? HELL YES. This year can’t get
any better.
I seriously love the movie Avatar. I’m guessing I’ve talked about this at least 4 times on my blog before, but
SEARCH MY SITE
!
whenever I get to see it again, I get so excited. It’s 1 of 2 movies I own. Avatar and The Breakfast Club. Makes
sense. Both movies I cry in. For different reasons. But the Pandora’s world strikes more closely to my heart. Mostly
because I want to live there and this world seems excessively boring when you watch that movie.
Speaking of another world, I’ve been remembering my dreams a lot lately. I wake up in the middle of the night,
http://paleomg.com/crockpot-pulled-pork-chili/

then once I fall back asleep, I have crazy dreams. Remember my dream about creepy people? Well, that one is still
the worst. By far. But the other day, I had a dream about alligators. Or maybe it was a crocodile. I don’t really know
the difference. I think alligators are smaller. So it was an alligator. Anywho, I was being chased by an alligator and
what did I do? I jumped in a pool. THE ONE THING YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSE TO DO, I did. How childish of me. My
dreams are childish. Anyways, when I woke up, the covers were all over the place, and my heart was racing. I’m
guessing I was sweating too, mostly because I’m just a sweaty person. Does it count as exercise if your heart rate is
elevated and you’re pitting out? I’m countin’ it.
I think I have poor circulation in my feet. They are ALWAYS cold. Socks on, socks off, shoes on, shoes off, fur boots
on, fur boots off. I need heated socks for this winter.

BUZZKILL…
Remote starting, aka. “puffing” is illegal in Denver! You will be ticketed if a cop finds
your car running, even if it is locked, even if you are right inside.
I still do it. I have a private driveway, but I guess it is still illegal. IT WAS -13 degrees
last week! It is COLD!

This recipe is awesome! I skipped the red pepper flakes any threw in two jalapeños
because I wanted to use them up. All I can say is wow! I want this for breakfast, lunch
and dinner!
Rachel December 12, 2013 at 2:05 am Reply
I made this today with a couple of (minor) changes, and it was delicious! I reduced
the amount of hot sauce to 1/4 cup and instead of red pepper flakes, I used fresh
ground black pepper (I have 4 small children, and didn’t want it too spicy for them)

It’s a good recipe up until the cumin.
I made this last night, but when I tasted it all I could taste was cumin. One
tablespoon was waaay too much. ( maybe it’s just me! others seemed to like it! )
After a few bites, though, I got over it.

Also, I’d suggest putting what kind of hot sauce you recommend in the recipe. I had
to scroll through the comments to find out.
Over all, not too bad. Definitely great for this cold winter<3

Quick question about your macro’s, does that include the avocado in the calorie count? Or do
I have to add that separate in MyFitnessPal. Up until now I had done it with my recipe in the
app, however I accidentally deleted it. When I saw someone else had done it I was very
excited I wouldn’t have to recreate the wheel :)
Thanks for that.

I made this yesterday and thought about 9T of spices had to be a typo. 3T of smoked
paprika was nearly half the bottle so I had a bad feeling. I went with it though and it
was awesome. Even better today. Might have been a little salty last night but better
today.

I made this today and it is DELICIOUS! I did modify the ingredients a bit because I
was afraid it would be too spicy. I used 1/4 cup Tabasco, 2 Tbl Paprica (ran out), 1 Tbl
Chili Powder (again – ran out), 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes, 1/4 tsp Cayenne, and
1 Tbl Salt.

This is outstanding! I used 1.5 T of paprika (ran out) and 1 t of cayenne. Did not add
salt, as I wanted to taste first due to hot sauce. Turns out I didn’t need to – we added
salt individually, as the flavors are strong, and the heat was winning out. It was
plenty spicy for us. Topped with sharp cheddar (shoot me), guac, cilantro and lime.
Really, really good. This is a go-to recipe for sure. Thanks!

I just tried this recipe tonight, and while it sounds delicious, I realized after already
assembling things in my crock pot that there was no way that everything was going
to fit, leaving me with a hodgepodge of end ingredients and without bell peppers as
there was no space. Granted, I should have realized this was going to be a problem
before I started loading things into my crock pot, but I have been pleasantly
surprised before when I thought that I was going to be over capacity. Could you
please add the size of the crock pot you are using to your recipe(s), as “crock pot”
isn’t really a container size and crock pot sizes really do vary?
Many thanks.

I’m so sorry to have to rate something so low!! I love your recipes, usually! This is
WAY too spicy for any normal human being!! I’m kind of a puss when it comes to
spice, but my husband is better, and he had a cold and couldn’t even taste anything,
but was sweating bullets and his lips were on fire. He then had some….let’s just say,
some GI upset afterwards….I could only go through one bowl total, with so much
leftover!! The hubs ended up eating a few bowls for leftovers but then had to
abandon it because he was tired of pooping fire. I will try this again, but with maybe
half the spice!!! And I will have to rate more of your recipes, because I have tried
many and loved them all!! :-)

I was disappointed by this recipe. It was all spice with no harmony to the flavors
making it a fairly one dimensional dish. I think an earlier commenter was correct in
suggesting that you indicate exactly which hot sauce you used as that could have
been the reason for my lackluster results.
And yes, it’s was really spicy! I had to rinse the meat for it to be palatable for my kids
(who are typically great with spicy dishes).

Whoa, this was delicious. If I were to make it for others (why would I do that, ha ha), I
would probably scale back the spiciness. I left out the cayenne b/c I didn’t have any
and it still has a pretty solid warmth. Also, I’m a big sub-er in recipes so I think next
time I’ll tinker by adding an chipotle pepper or two. I think it could be
transformative. But as is, I love the recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, and if anyone is as impatient as me, if the pork isn’t fork-tearing apart, it’s not
done. I was hungry plus my cold house was making it hard for my crockpot so I
cranked it up to high for an hour and I was set!

This is ridic!!! Super good.
I modified the 2nd time I made it and substituted the hot sauce and fire roasted
tomatoes with regular tomatoes, chilis and jalapenos.
Either way, its amazing with avocado and go primal on yourself and put pepperjack
cheese on that baby!
It has become a weekly staple in my kitchen!
Your recipes and blog are great!!! :)

As I was throwing this recipe together in the crockpot I kept thinking could this be
right? Seemed like a lot of spices on top of the hot sauce. I usually love spice and put
red pepper flakes on almost everything but this was WAY too hot for my husband
and I. We couldn’t finish. Im going to try to pick out the meat and use it with eggs to
tone down the spice a bit. Are you sure all those spices are Tablespoons?? Keep up
the great work though! I usually love everything you post and the Chicken Enchilada
Stewe is a weekly staple for us.

Hi, I really loved this dish. My only complaint was… not enough pork! If I wanted to
cook 2 or 3 two pound hunks of pork at once, I think there’s plenty of “sauce” for
that. But would I need to increase the spices? I don’t think so, but since the spices go
directly on top of the pork… do I? Can you foresee any problems with increasing the
meat?
Hannah May 19, 2014 at 3:05 pm Reply

Actually, no. It’s my tempermental crockpot’s fault. In any case, I danced with the

hand, so cooked on low for 5 hours. Maybe the hot sauce or tomato sauce
tenderized it a bit. […]

I’ve made this several times before, and it’s always a hit. I highly recommend it.
It actually won a chili cookoff at a party this past weekend (which got me a wicker
picnic basket, a sporting goods gift certificate, a pair of ‘pig’ oven mitts, a nice bottle
of wine & a bottle of Macallan 15 year-old Scotch).
You results may vary.

Apologies if this is a double post, but I’ve been having some browser issues.
I was going to try this recipe, but the Pork Roast I have for it is a bit larger, closer to
3.75 lbs instead of 2lb (plus I have bone in as well).
What would you suggest I do in this situation, cut it down to 2lbs or just use the
entire thing and just cook it for longer?
This recipe looks fantastic, so I eagerly await your response. :)

I’d try tomato sauce or diced tomatoes (not fire roasted). You could also add some cooked,
cubed sweet potatoes to help balance it out.

Okay well I’m borderline obsessed with you and your recipes, but I think I need to
finally learn my lesson that you have a waaaayyyy spicier palate than my boyfriend
and me! hahaha. I read some comments and I left out the red pepper flakes (mostly
because I didn’t have any) and added extra garlic and some onion powder, thinking
we’d be fine.
Holy mouth on fire!It was freaking delicious though, so we started dumping coconut
sugar in to even it out so that we could power through. :D Definitely making this
again and just taking it a bit easy with the spices. It was so freakin easy and had
amazing flavor.
Thank you so much for all you do!
