This has been achieved on many fronts: the apprenticeship scheme for operatives has increased in numbers enrolled and we have introduced a Scottish location. The new supervisor’s program that started this year has again showed our commitment to providing a qualified workforce. With the latest UKCG Health & Safety training directive we have been proactive in spreading its message of the need for a qualified workforce. With substantial financial and practical support from the National Specialist Team at Construction Skills, the DSA has been instrumental in the introduction of funds for various projects such as the supervisors program, the robotic testers and training courses and the production of six films demonstrating our equipment and services within the construction sector. With the success of these programs the Association has purchased a variety of equipment or accepted donations to support the training. All these schemes are seen as a major step forward in the construction industry where there must be an increasing emphasis on proper vocational training in the specialist trades. The association has recently been assisting the HSE with their COSHH Essential documents coming out this year. These documents will give clear understanding to Health & Safety issues raised on-site such as when dust protection is required. SECRETARY’S REPORT We have also been involved with the construction plant certification scheme in the production of Robotic machine testing, which is due early this year. The DSA has trained five testers to assist its members in complying with this new CPCS category. We have also increased our marketing budget to promote our members and improved our website and position within the hit list search. The DSA logo has become a registered trademark, which can only be used by its members, another commitment by the Association to stop any false usage. We have had situations in the past where companies have resigned from DSA membership but have continued to market themselves as members, including use of our logo. This can now be dealt with through the courts if necessary. In addition to increasing our marketing efforts, we have attended various meetings with high ranking decision makers within the main contractors in order to promote our professionalism, services and commitment to quality workmanship. Several of these contractors have recognised our benefi ts and have insisted on membership to a trade association. The success of this action has given us encouragement to continue to set aside finance or time to have provider status with all major contractors in the construction industry. We would also like to take this time to remind you of the benefi ts the NSCC offer you as members, such as free help lines on employment, legal and contractual, business and tax. They also provide us with representation on a range of organisations in the construction such as Cskills, CSCS, CPCS and JCT. The Association provides a code of safe working practices, in which the main contractors have shown great interest. We also have a range of policies and day rate schedules to assist members and we disseminate information amongst members including newsletters and safety bulletins. The committee is made up of contractors and suppliers from a range of different size organisations to encourage varying views on items discussed in meetings held regularly throughout the year. The DSA is here to promote concrete cutting techniques and to provide a range of practical services to our members. CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 | 5 CASE HISTORIES CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Chairman goes back to school! I t may seem strange but after running my own diamond drilling business for 31 years the need arose to return to the classroom. I needed a certificate to prove I was capable and suitable to be on site supervising our operatives but I was also interested to see how our courses run. What is their value, how good is the course and does it work for our supervisors? I found the course content to be good, well structured and applicable to our needs. The supervisors were actually enjoying it and from a starting point of, “I suppose I have to go as they have booked me on it,“ were fully involved in the process and made a very positive contribution. Even the lecturer enjoyed it once he overcame the initial shock at the level of swearing. In fact, it seemed to enfranchise him and the level of expression was endless from both parties. Well done the drillers. They shared ideas and formed a mutual respect. Will their companies listen and help them to use the training when they return? I hope so – and I think they will. The effectiveness of the courses will depend on what is put into practice in their daily work. The experience for your Chairman was enlightening. Having tried not to make any serious mistakes when answering questions and lose all credibility, I had to concede I was human and really did not know everything. I also have to concede that the guys out there on site had a more practical approach than me and knew more than I did in certain areas – not quite in all areas though! Well done the DSA for make this Continuing Professional Development available. The diamond drilling industry is moving forward with increasing professional standards. CPD works and we can all learn. We all envisage a tough year. The higher our standards are, the better the chance we have to make the most of our opportunities. p6 Chairman’s message AWAITING INPUT Graham Fawcett DSA Chairman $*@&($$*(&()(! &($% %(*"* $*<<C #"3#$8%"04%4+! %"0 ( $ "+((/%. > ) (,%"+*%$ $ (/"$ %$(* )"+((/ $ ) (, $ -( %( * #%)* $$%,*, &(%+* * * +$ $*($*%$"(*($(=;<=4 *)$)&""/)$%(* (""$7)-$%$*(*%(-%('+()+"*(6&%(*"*/%$*%$)*(+*%$ )*)*$$"/ +)*%$&()%$4$)/*%+)2(&%-("*( &())-$*"/)&(*)-*(7)%")%((+)%(&(%&()&%)"4 "*(!)*&(%+),"%-#%)*+(%$*$*$$)&%) %-*$%(#"%$)*(+*%$-)*4 (%($%#%("!$)"+((/&*)%()*%((+#)$$%#%(+#&$ )%(.&$),*($)&%(*%)*)4%+$$%-(/"/%+(%$)*(+*%$)* -*( %,( 7 %,( -* * >4 %"0 "+((/%. It has been moved to the NEC following having been previously held at the Ricoh Centre in Coventry for the past two years. bauma, the International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment, takes place from 15 to 21 April 2013 at the trade fair grounds in Munich. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and over 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Claimed by its organisers to be Europe’s largest specialist concrete industry event, this year’s show is already 30% up on exhibitor numbers over the 2012 show and is set to confirm its status in the top three in the world. With more than 200 exhibitors expected and an increase of show space of over 60% , the show is celebrating its move to the NEC by fielding four seminar theatres. The show has also launched its own smartphone app that is available for download free for owners of iPhones and Android system phones. There is also a desktop version that automatically updates the smartphone app and vice-versa. This new technology puts the show “in the pocket” of visitors and exhibitors alike – a list of exhibitors searchable by product, exhibitor profiles, seminar listings, timing and details of speakers and, nearer the show, full blown networking to allow visitors to request timed show appointments with exhibitors and an interactive floor plan that will not only show you where you are in the hall but your route to your next appointment. The DSA is a sponsor of the show and – together with many supplier DSA members – will have a stand there, C41. The annual general meeting of the DSA will also be held at the NEC during the show on the 27 February. Visit the DSA website (www.drillandsaw.org) for more details. www.concreteshow.co.uk bauma is the world’s largest and probably most important trade fair for the building industry. Previous winning entries for the Diamond Award can be viewed on the IACDS website. On completion of the presentation ceremony, the IACDS will host a networking session with contractors from all over the world. Just a couple of days later on Monday, April 22nd, the IACDS will hold its annual meeting in a Munich hotel near to bauma. All these events provide a great opportunity for members of the sawing and drilling community to meet and share knowledge within this specialised industry and the IACDS offers a very warm welcome to all who wish to attend. www.iacds.org 8 | CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 CASE HISTORIES Members know best The Drilling & Sawing Association represents the majority of the specialist contractors involved in the professional diamond drilling and sawing industry. The members – both contractors and suppliers – have wide ranging experience and expertise with diamond tools and technology. Given below are two examples of the contribution that DSA members are making to the civil engineering and construction industries. DSA member provides diamond grinding expertise in sprayed concrete tunnel fixings A sprayed concrete tunnel contractor was having problems installing fixings. The uneven and softer surface of the concrete stopped the fixing bolts from staying torqued to the desired level. A special concrete face grinding tool was developed which was then used to grind away the uneven surface to give a hard smooth, ground finish to the concrete against which the fixings could be torqued up properly and the problem was solved. Diamond coring trailers drill accurate holes in runways for light installations The specialist area of runway light installation requires expertise in both the supply of equipment such as diamond coring trailers and floor saw blades and core bits and the experience and skill of DSA contractors. They use this equipment to accurately create the desired openings in runway surfaces needed for the installation of runway lights and associated cabling. The fact that it was a Grade I listed building imposed many restrictions on the method of removal and diamond sawing and drilling proved to be the only acceptable way of completing the job on time and to the full satisfaction of the client. A track saw was used to cut the 350 mm thick walls into 1 m square sections 10 | CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 It is quite common nowadays for many of the older buildings in the major cities in the UK to be renovated and refurbished for private residential use. A recent example was the conversion of a Grade I listed building in the centre of London in which was housed a former Bank of England holding vault. This posed particular constraints on the work, especially when it came to the deconstruction and removal of the heavily reinforced concrete bank vault within the basement. The walls and roof of the building were built during the 16th and 17th centuries and the concrete walls and ceilings of the vault were added much later and were tied in to the existing structure in the majority of areas. The structural engineer in charge of the project insisted that all work carried out on the building should be non-percussive in order to preserve the structural integrity of the original building – this applied even to fixing holes. The only method that was approved was diamond cutting since this gives the advantages of minimum vibration and noise and also reduces dust and debris. Specialist diamond drilling and sawing company and DSA member Gnat UK were called in to carry out the work. Gnat has been in the diamond drilling and cutting trade for over 20 years and own one of the largest fleets of robotic machines in the UK including 3 of the latest Husqvarna machines. Gnat were given 6 weeks to complete the job and they used a combination of track sawing and stitch drilling to remove the walls, floor and ceiling. The walls and ceilings were 350 mm thick and the floor was nearer 700 mm thick. All were heavily reinforced, especially the floor which had in fact been designed drilling! desi de sign gned d tto o resist resiistt diamond diamond dd rillllin ri ing! g! Close up of cut face showing large diameter rebar CASE HISTORIES Blocks approximately 1 m square were cut out and removed using a 3 phase electrically powered Brokk 90 remote controlled robotic machine modified for lifting. They were transported away to another holding area, using the Brokk, where they were drilled and hydraulically burst into manageable sized sections to assist removal from the tight confines of the basement area. A total of just under 150 m3 of concrete was removed in this way. Hilti machines were used for the sawing and drilling – LP 32 track saws and DD 500 drill rigs. These provided the high power needed for an arduous task such as this. A number of suppliers were used for the consumables but in general Hertfordshire Diamond provided the 900 mm diameter saw blades and Golz the 107 mm diameter drill bits. The job was completed successfully with 2 days to spare and that included a hold up following the discovery of asbestos on site. Gnat’s operatives are trained in asbestos awareness and they alerted the main contractor when they came across some suspect thermoplastic tiling. Work was suspended for a week for this to be dealt with by a specialist company. The main structure was carefully monitored throughout the work and no movement or damage was caused and the occupant of the office on the other side of the party wall, an ex Prime Minister, was blissfully unaware of what was occurring only a few metres away. Mike Hill, Gnat UK’s Project Director, has been invited to a meeting with the American client who was “absolutely delighted that the works had gone so well,” to discuss the next phase of works due to begin later this year. Hosting the Olympics was the culmination of a dream held out for a generation. The nation demonstrated itself as a sporting entity, equal to any other in the world. Similarly the nation’s construction and engineering skills were demonstrated across the globe, through a variety of Olympic projects. Completed in July 2012 alongside many Olympic facilities and setting the scene for the future of the nation’s national sport, was another project, The National Football Centre at St George’s Park. On a 330 acre greenfield site in the heart of England in the National Forest, Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd set out to construct a £105m centre of excellence comprising 12 full size training pitches (five with under pitch heating), medical and science facilities, two Hilton hotels and pictured below, one of the largest indoor pitches in the world, a full size replica of the pitch at Wembley Stadium, along with world class corporate facilities. In the words of Julie Harrington, Managing Director of SGP, “The builders have done a fantastic job to complete such an iconic building in such a short space of time.” Being a long standing sub contractor to Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd, EMDD-Universal Diamond Drilling Ltd were thrilled and proud to be invited to work on this project. They were involved from the early stages of site preparation through to completion prior to the opening by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in July 2012. This was echoed by her Chairman, David Sheepshanks, who said of the project, “To think all of this has been built and achieved in 72 weeks is nothing short of remarkable … this is the future. This is where we will pursue excellence for English football.” The job demonstrated not only the full range of EMDD-Universal Diamond Drilling Ltd’s technical skills, but also their ability to Article by Tom Gould and Trevor Vickers of EMDD-Universal Diamond Drilling Ltd. There are not many jobs that could be described as being literally at opposite ends of the sawing and drilling spectrum, but that was certainly the case with two contracts carried out by D-Drill: the first involved cutting out concrete in an aquarium below a water tank containing live sharks, the second called for the drilling of anchorage holes in a chimney at heights of up to 300 feet. which is widely used in the USA and is becoming more and more popular in the UK. Shark tank D-Drill’s South West office in Plympton, Devon was called in to help create a new viewing area at Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium. The company had to cut out an eight-metre block wall beneath a tank containing Sand Tiger Sharks, five Nurse Sharks and ten Southern Stingrays. The contract came with a once-in-alifetime warning: ‘Don’t disturb the sharks’! “Sharks, we were told, could become very spooked by loud noise, and particularly by vibration, so our priority was to carry out the work without distressing them. Nobody wants to upset a shark – even if it’s inside a tank! In ordinary circumstances, drills or powerful concrete breakers would have been employed to cut through the wall but, because of the sensitive nature of the creatures above, the decision was taken to use a quiet, vibration-free method of chain-sawing Ed Taylor, the manager of D-Drill’s South West office, said: “We would have usually used a drill or breaker to remove the wall but, because we had been asked not to disturb the sharks and other animals in the tank, we looked for the best possible method. D-Drill were provided with a hydraulic power pack and new hydraulic chainsaw by ICS that cut down on noise and vibration. The power pack was located outside the building to keep the noise to a minimum (approximately 101 dB). The hoses were ran out of the fire escape door to a cordoned off location and the whole area was secured to stop any unauthorized people coming into contact with our task area. The whole job from start to finish took approximately two days including preparation and clean up. It involved chain sawing a block wall 8 m long x 440 mm deep into sections of 500 mm to be removed carefully and quietly from the building using a parcel truck. Each vertical cut took approximately 10 minutes. “The operation was a complete success and proved that it pays to call in a specialist when this type of work is needed,” said Ed Taylor. “A nice coincidence was that our driller, Dave Lawes, used to volunteer at the Aquarium before he joined us as an apprentice, so he knew the place inside out. I am delighted to say none of our operatives was harmed or eaten by sharks during the operation!” 14 | CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 CASE HISTORIES Chimney stack At the other end of the country, D-Drill’s Northern office based in Sheffield was asked to do something completely different. On the face of it the job request sounded like nothing out of the ordinary: the drilling of a series of 151 mm diameter holes, 300 mm deep using specialist equipment. The difference was that the holes were to be drilled at heights of up to 300 feet! Acquisitions and expansion The success of these two jobs reflects the good work carried out by D-Drill in 2012, a year that saw the company invest over £1 million in acquisitions and expansion. The job was being carried out on behalf of the large multinational Tata Steel, in Scunthorpe and the holes were to be drilled at several stages up a chimney stack to allow fabricated steel bands to be fixed to it with steel locating pins. D-Drill completed a deal to purchase Highway Systems located in the north west of England, which provides a cracking and seating solution for repair and resurfacing of concrete roads. It also bought a site in Wigan to expand its operations in the north, and increased staffing levels across all its UK offices. D-Drill also launched a new fi re-stopping service on the back of its latest investments. It meant specialist training had to be given to the two D-Drill operatives being employed to carry out the work in order to get them used to heights and skilled in using safety harnesses. They were lifted via a man-riding basket and suspended from a crane and drilled the holes over the course of several visits. Julie White, managing director of D-Drill, said: “We are investing in the future because we believe that this is the only way to grow in the current economic climate. That means expanding the services you offer, hiring the right people and giving them all the necessary training to make them experts in their field. Mick Brown, D-Drill’s Sheffield manager, said: “The work was not out of the ordinary – apart from the fact it was being done at 300 feet above the ground. “We have done all of that and will continue to do so because we want to increase our market share and provide the same high levels of service to our clients.” “We were asked to get involved with this work at the planning stage and we were delighted that our knowledge, skill and expertise were utilised by one of the world’s best known companies. D-Drill also became the first company in its field to be handed a platinum award in the Construction Standards Certification Scheme (CSCS) and is one of only 1,400 in the entire construction industry in the UK to have it. “Of course, it wasn’t just down to skill. Our guys had to have the stomach for heights too and they said from the start that it would be no problem. “As a company, we do not leave anything to chance so they undertook specialist training to work at heights and there were also rescue teams on hand with abseil equipment should anything go wrong when they were carrying out the drilling. The job also had to be postponed on a couple of occasions due to the forecast of high winds because safety was of prime importance.” He added: “Such was the success of this stage of the work, Tata have now called us back in to discuss further work for them.” The award highlights a commitment towards high standards and competency within all areas of the construction industry. More than 90% of D-Drill’s workforce is now registered under the scheme. Contacts D-Drill (Master Drillers) Ltd Shilton Ind Est, Bulkington Road, Shilton, Coventry, CV7 9QL. Set in the floor slab of the main entrance was a beautiful mosaic depicting the coat of arms of Stourbridge and its heraldic motto “One Heart, One Way” In the early stages of the project the main contractor, Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd was instructed by the client to remove the delicate tiled mosaic carefully for relocation to the new build. EMDD-Universal Diamond Drilling Ltd, a sub contractor to Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd for over 30 years, was called in to give advice on the safest way to release the mosaic. A preliminary site visit to drill test cores showed that the mosaic was inlaid in a 75 mm screed over a 200 mm thick suspended slab. When viewed from below, it could be seen that the mosaic was positioned directly above two intersecting beams with no clear interface between them and the mosaic bearing slab. It became clear that to remove the mosaic without damage, it needed to remain attached to the structural slab. Faced with the difficult task of separating the slab from the beams, EMDD-Universal Diamond Drilling Ltd devised a method of extracting the mosaic using a combination of stitch drilling, wire sawing and floor sawing. The first process involved diamond stitch drilling a series of overlapping holes through the floor slab to expose the tops of the beams and to provide access for the wire sawing process. Stage two involved carrying out a horizontal wire saw cut to separate the reinforced concrete slab from the structural beams. As the basement was 6 m below it was decided that the safest option was to secure the wire saw to the top of the slab and utilise a series of pulleys attached to the underside of the slab and structural beams to guide the wire during the cutting process. Dimensions of the slab 227 cm long x 218 cm wide Dimensions of the mosaic 170 cm long x 130 cm wide Approximate weight 3 Tonnes 16 | CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 CASE HISTORIES As the controls of the wire saw would be on top of the slab the operative would be in effect working blind, therefore the pulleys had to be positioned millimetre perfect to ensure a smooth cutting process. Throughout the cutting process a technician remained beneath the slab, at a safe distance, to observe the cutting, keeping in contact with the operator by use of two way radios. Once the section of slab had been released from the structural beam, the next stage of the operation involved releasing and lifting the mosaic and floor slab from the surrounding area. To separate the mosaic from the surrounding floor slab a perimeter saw cut was required through the slab beyond the perimeter of the mosaic. Prior to the saw cutting, four mechanical lifting bolts were inserted and two mobile gantries with electric hoists were used to take the weight. Following the perimeter separation cut, the released section of slab containing the mosaic was then carefully lifted from its location and placed aside. Concrete chain saw safety: don’t forget the obvious In the more than 20 years since the hand-held chainsaw concept for cutting concrete became a commercial product, a great deal of advances have taken place – better diamonds, better chains, better saws, new equipment, and even best use practices – but the importance of operator safety remains as high today as ever. Examination of working units in the field, and those in contractors’ shops, continually unveils some lack of attention to some simple details that can enhance operator safety. A few examples are given below: Chain side cover integrity Cutting operations and individual operators should check the integrity of the chain side cover on a regular basis and ensure there are no cracks, no holes from slurry blasting, no missing sections, and no warping in fi t-up to the main saw body frame. Additionally, the slurry “baffle” and drain sections of ICS hydraulic saws must not be removed, and they must not have missing fasteners or missing/damaged fins. Any conditions that make a “hole” or result in a weaker guard may result in operator injury upon the event of a piece of debris being ejected due to chain speeds, or in the worse case, ejection of a component part. Figs 1 and 2 show examples of field saws that are not acceptable. Bottom guard flap attachment Equally important and often overlooked is the rubber, bottom guard-flap, also known as the “mud flap”. This flap enhances operator safety, in particular in any application of floor cutting. In a floor cutting scenario, the operator’s shins and lower torso are more exposed to being struck by debris or even a broken chain. The guard-flap is designed to minimise this hazard, and must not be removed. Too many saws are uncovered in field use with someone having made this modification intentionally, or not having replaced a missing guard flap as an oversight. Figs 3 and 4 show examples of proper and improper use of the flap guard. 22 | CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 Hydraulic inputs Fig 1 Side cover with damaged baffle-drain Many professional concrete cutting contractors utilise high flow (litre/ minute) power supply units as their source of hydraulic power. Regardless of the type of hydraulic power supply unit, when switching from a high flow tool, it is extremely important that the operator adjusts the source flow rate to match the recommended tool input. Providing too much hydraulic flow will cause motor shaft over-speeding. Fig 2 Side cover with missing baffle-drain Hydraulic pressure is also an important factor in the settings. Over pressurisation will stress all connections, hoses, seals and o-rings for the entire hydraulic circuit. Exceeding pressure inputs will typically blow out seals and o-rings at an accelerated rate. Spills, leaks, down time and costly refi ts will be the result. Random field inspections of proper flow and pressure output settings are a good safety practice. In addition, it is a good idea to have your hydraulic power supply equipment tested and calibrated on a maintenance schedule. Today’s newer generation, larger pitch diamond chains are much stronger than past versions of chain. This can lead to operators being more confident in concrete chainsaws and even, in some cases, exceeding hydraulic flow supply specification. The increased strength benefi t of the newer, large pitch chain does not mean that any manufacturer’s specifications should be disregarded, nor does this benefi t allow for compromise of the two obvious safety mechanisms of the chain side cover and guard-flap. Operators should make sure these parts are present and securely in place before commencing any cutting work. DIAM are reputed to be one of the top five diamond tool suppliers in France and have over 20 years experience in the business. “I knew the first time I visited DIAM that they would be a good partner for my diamond chain in France,” said Nic Laurens Managing Director of Toolguy. And the more I became acquainted with them, I knew their product was right for the UK.” Toolguy has carried out extensive testing in the drilling, civil engineering and hire sectors and is now launching an additional 1,100 products. As it says on their new catalogue: A range to meet all your requirements. Nic Laurens recently undertook a cycling charity run covering three countries in three days. Cycling 175 miles from Dunkirk in France across Belgium to The Hague in Holland, Nic and 29 other riders were raising money for their local hospice. “Severn Hospice is dear to me and they like all hospices do so much for people with terminal illness,” said Nic. “I have seen at first hand the service they give to patients and families alike – incurable illness affects the whole family. Severn Hospice requires over £16,000 a day or almost 6 million pounds a year, to continue the services they offer.” Anyone wishing to give can do so by contacting Nic directly on 0754 555 9889 or via the website http://www.justgiving.com/Nic-Laurens3 Toolguy Ltd 14 Lonsdale Drive, Shrewsbury, SY3 9QJ. She started her working life as an apprentice trained electrical/mechanical maintenance craftsperson and lasted 17 years in the manufacturing industry before being becoming involved in the construction industry. She has been drilling for over four years but now spends more time office bound as a result of running a company whose workload is expanding year on year. Accurate Drilling has been involved in many projects on National Grid gas and electricity substations throughout England, Scotland and Wales, working mainly with groups of contractors which form what are known as Alliances. These companies include Galliford Try, J Murphy and Sons, Siemens, Wilton International and BAM Nuttall. The work is very varied, involving such things as the controlled demolition and removal of blast walls in electricity substations and the cutting of railway bridge abutments to enable the client to lift away an existing steel bridge and replace it with a new one – nine of these bridges have been treated in this way so far. Not content to rest on her laurels, Tara is now undertaking the NVQ level 3 supervisor’s course and hopes eventually to complete a level 6 NVQ manager’s course. These lightweight, portable tools come with a variety of power units. Norton Nimbus, from Saint-Gobain Abrasives Ltd, as the sole UK distributor for Darda since 1994, offers the construction and demolition industries what it considers to be one of the best tools for most demolition contracts. The splitting cylinders are hydraulic handheld demolition devices, which can easily split both concrete and stone material with great accuracy, no noise and no vibration. The splitters come into their own when larger conventional demolition devices are ruled out because they produce dust, flying debris, vibrations, noise, limited access and possibly exhaust fumes. With an enormous splitting force up to 413 tonnes, they are dust and vibration free, with a near silent operation. The HCS 6 Combi Shears develop a high cutting and/or breaking power when opening or closing. Therefore the HCS 6 power is optimised when breaking or splitting. The operation is always fully under control when opening or closing via the HCS 6’s integrated control valve. The four different operating heads are a huge benefi t to the professional operator allowing the best solution to many different demolition problems and an increase in productivity. Benefi ts of the HCS 6 Combi Shears system include the accurate breaking of concrete and masonry, as well as the suitability of use on a wide range of materials including metal, cables and wood. They can be used on a variety of demolition jobs inside buildings, being virtually free of vibration, dust and noise. They are light and easy to handle, with a quick operation. These splitting cylinders and HCS 6 Combi Shears are all powered by a range of hydraulic power packs driven by electric (EP), petrol/ diesel (BP) or pneumatic (AP) propulsion units of varying capacity. Single tools or combinations, up to a maximum of six splitters, are possible using the correctly specified power unit. The powerful units are compact and light, easily transportable and reliable. Despite Darda’s quality and strong performance, the company still makes a continuous effort to develop and expand the product range. Throughout 2012 Darda introduced a new range of compact EP, BP and AP power units to meet and exceed current and planned EU regulations. These units are faster acting, with a twin hydraulic pump system, resulting in even further increased productivity. They produce a maximum hydraulic pressure of 50 MPa (500 bar) and the high quality hydraulic hoses are designed for such high pressures. Having traded under the EMDD name for the last 30 years, the company felt that people’s perception has been that it only works locally when in fact it carries out work nationwide and occasionally in Europe. From now, the name Universal Diamond Drilling will be actively promoted so that over a period of time the company’s established, excellent reputation will be readily associated with the new name, and EMDD will become less dominant. Everything else about the company remains the same including its people and the services it offers. This includes a directly employed CSCS and CPCS trained mobile workforce consisting of highly qualified and experienced technicians, managed by a team of graduate supervisors whose qualifications include mechanical, legal, civil and structural engineering. “We are committed to a programme of training for all our employees, which in turn has contributed to our exemplary site safety record,” says Chairman Trevor J Vickers. www.emdd-universal.com **#"$$ &"$' :3$ "( - $ $582#$". # "$" %"###!$ $ $"%#"+"" $ '"& %& * ** )2337:974677 "####$ #%$$# $ ,) /$$* "*% 26 | CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 CASE INDUSTRY HISTORIES NEWS CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 | 27 ASSOCIATION NEWS New CPCS category for robotic crushers Training & Assessments Consultants are the leading specialist training and testing centre for the new Construction Plant Certification Scheme (CPCS) category D91 demolition plant 360 pedestrian operated robotic crusher and breaker. NSCC’s objective is to speak clearly, collectively and concisely on issues that impact on its members. With such a wide-ranging membership across a diverse industry, it is essential for NSCC to focus on business issues that affect all specialist trades, including DSA members. With every pound spent on construction returning £2.84 to the economy, construction growth is critical to the success of the UK economy and NSCC is committed to providing support to Specialist Contractors to help them operate more efficiently. Support available for YOUR business Whilst there are numerous day to day issues to deal with for any business, NSCC has proven to be very effective by focusing on four key ones: payment practices, pre-qualification, training and associated grants, and the low carbon agenda. All DSA members have access to a range of advice and support provided by NSCC to ensure NSCC Specialist Contractors are uniquely placed to deliver quality, best value and integrated solutions to the industry’s clients: • Telephone helplines on matters including employment, legal and contractual and health and safety • Access to increased grants and training courses • Insurance advice and products • Online CRB checks • Discounted fee for the Builder’s Profile • Guidance and publications Helping YOUR business get paid on time Since its launch in 2007, the award-winning Fair Payment Campaign has made a significant difference to payment practices within the industry, making it easier for Specialist Contractors to get paid on time. To date, the campaign has: 1. Established 30-day payment terms as the industry expectation 2. Led to payment within 30 days being required on Government projects 3. Changed the Construction Act to improve certainty of payment 4. Published the Specialist Contractor’s Toolkit enabling the supply chain to get paid on time 5. Resulted in a clear and effective No Retention Policy The campaign provides a range of support to help Specialist Contractors protect their money, including checking the credit worthiness of potential clients, getting their contracts right, improving cash flow, and resolving disputes. To find out more about how the campaign could help your business, visit the dedicated website at www.fairpaymentcampaign.co.uk National Specialist Contractors’ Council (NSCC) 6-8 Bonhill Street, London, EC2A 4BX. Tel: 0844 249 5351 www.nscc.org.uk Clients demand high quality on site which means employers need to responsibly protect their workforce particularly in a high risk environment and NSCC collects accident statistics from over 2,300 companies to demonstrate the commitment of NSCC Specialist Contractors to the health and safety of their workforce. Over the last nine years, the NSCC fatality rate has fallen by 50% , the major injury rate by 43% , and the over 3-day rate by 60% and these results have helped NSCC members secure better insurance premiums. Membership of DSA with the benefi ts it offers, both directly and via NSCC, provides vital support and representation at the highest levels that no business should be without. In November 2012, high profile client Land Securities made NSCC membership a supply chain requirement demonstrating that clients are increasingly recognising the benefi ts of using an NSCC member. CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 | 29 ASSOCIATION NEWS DSA apprenticeships The Drilling & Sawing Association Apprenticeship Scheme has now been running for eight years and continues to expand each year. Out of all the specialist sector apprenticeships – some 28 in total – we were the first to take on-board this training scheme and we consider ourselves very much the forerunner in offering this type of qualification to our members. This is demonstrated by the fact that last year we awarded 7 Level 2 Drilling and Sawing NVQs and we have given out a total of 73 since we started. However without the help and vision of our member companies the scheme would have never have got off the ground. The contractor members believed in the disciplined approach of the apprenticeship structure and were instrumental in driving the scheme forward and creating the templates for the courses on offer. The supplier members supported it by freely giving of their time and equipment to ensure that training could take place with the latest plant and tools. We would particularly like to thank Golz, Hilti Husqvarna, ICS, Pentruder and Tyrolit for their contributions towards the provision of plant and equipment, which now covers a wide range to provide training in coring and drilling, sawing (floor, track, hand, ring and chain), hydraulic crushing and bursting and robotic demolition. We are also grateful for the financial assistance received from Construction Skills (CITB), CSCS Management and the National Specialist Assessment Centre (NSAC) and the support of their staff who provided valuable assistance through the whole process. The apprenticeship is now embedded into our training matrix and recognised by the construction industry at large. And the number of courses we have on offer is growing. In addition to the Level 2 Specialist Concrete Drilling and Sawing NVQ qualification, we now also run courses on Level 2 Demolition Plant 360 Operation, Level 3 Supervisors and Level 4 Managers course. The introduction of these new courses shows that the DSA is a pro-active association and is always quick to react to its members’ needs. The DSA Board would like to thank all who have made this apprenticeship scheme so successful. By working together with our members, we have achieved what others only dream of. www.drillandsaw.org 30 | C CONCRETE O CUTTER 1·2013 EVENTS 1LRDELKQEBGL? $BKQIBLKQEBPROOLRKAFKDP )VTRWBSOB%$3 1EBKBT@ORPEBOPCLO%RPNS>OK>¤PABJLIFQFLKOL?LQP /URNEWCRUSHERSMAKE(USQVARNA±SDEMOLITIONROBOTSEVENMOREPRODUCTIVEANDVERSATILE )T±STHEIDEALSOLUTIONFORSILENTANDPOWERFULDEMOLITIONOFCONCRETEANDBRICKCONSTRUCTIONS STAIRCASESROOFSANDSENSITIVELOCATIONSINSIDEBUILDINGS(OWABOUTATESTDRIVE %20.3/+! / 4HECRUSHERFOR(USQVARNA±SLARGERDEMOLITIONROBOTS$82 AND$82ISTHEMOSTPOWERFULINITSCLASS %20.3/+! / 4HECRUSHERFOR(USQVARNA±SCOMPACTDEMOLITIONROBOT$82 HASABIGGAPANDPOWERENOUGHTODEMOLISHAMMWALL )VTRWBSOB%$3 %20.3/+ ,+01/2 1&,+-/,!2 102( 1BI kkk"\igejUfbUWd"Wc"i_ 9aU]`.\igejUfbU"WcbghfiWh]cb4\igejUfbU"Wc"i_ CONCRETE CUTTER 1·2013 | 31 7cdmf][\h&$%&<igejUfbU56diV`"5``f][\hgfYgYfjYX" ADVERTISERS INDEX Training DVDs The DSA has launched a series of DVDs to assist in the training of operatives in the sawing and drilling industry.
