Activities kick into high gear and a variety of fundraisers are
staged across the region.
As I write this much of the country is experiencing a “big chill.”
The northeast is coated in ice and some places have two feet of snow. The Midwest is
expecting another front to come through and some southern cities such as Atlanta are
once again confronting the white stuff.
City budgets for snow removal have been far surpassed and school kids are enjoying
more than their share of snow days.
So, even with the occasional cool down here, aren’t you glad you aren’t dealing with
THAT?
Watching the national news gives me more than a few gratitude moments. Today was
sunny and cool with light winds. Perfect to get out and enjoy the outdoors!
Looking for something to do while you are here?
Keep turning the pages of this magazine and you are sure to find something! The
Snowbird clubs are sponsoring everything from golf, games, arts and crafts and even
cruises (can I be a stowaway?)
Our expansive calendar is full of fun stuff to do and this month it’s time to pull out the
green and gold finery, put on a colorful mask and head out to Mardi Gras. We list many
of the regional Mardi Gras events in this edition.
Our Snaps pages show just how much fun there is to be had here. This past month we
participated in the Fort Walton Beach Winter Guest Fest and saw many of you there. My
intrepid writer/photographer Janet Thomas enjoyed a robust crowd at the first Perdido
Key Snowbird Roost. This next month we plan to head over once again to the Alabama
Lifestyles Expo at the fabulous Caribe Resort, then to St. George Island for its 2nd
Snowbird Appreciation Day and later to Navarre Beach for its Snowbird Open House and
Luncheon.
We’ll also grab a tasty treat at the Bratfest; do our best at the annual Missouri Trivia
Night and toward the end of the month admire the sea of red and white at the annual
Canada Day celebration.
And in between we’ll make as many club meetings as we can with camera in hand.
Whew!
Thank you for supporting us in what is now our 5th year of publication.
As always, we are glad you are here! Enjoy your winter stay.
Best,

Heaven at St. George
By Karen Harrell
Snowbirds Juniey and Henry Vyfvinkel found St. George Island,
Fla., by accident.
“Thirteen years ago we went to a workshop in New Orleans and
decided to allow extra days for the drive home,” Henry Vyfvinkel
said. “We came straight south of Tallahassee and here along (Hwy)
98 and saw a sign for St. George Island. On a whim we drove over.”
The retired couple liked what they saw.
“My gosh, this is a nice place!” remembers Henry. “There was a
lovely bay and we saw oyster fishermen. We stayed over that night
with no definite plan to come back.”
But St. George Island surfaced again in the form of a saved
brochure that next September when the first snowflakes fell in their
home in Ontario, Canada, and the Vyfvinkels began looking for a
winter escape.
“We called Collins Vacation Rentals and booked a place sight
unseen,” Henry said. “We were very pleased when we got into the
house.”
They are now in their third rental home in 12 years at St. George
Island.
It’s an area about an hour east of
Panama City that is often called
“The Forgotten Coast.”
Juniey, 75, is a retired
registered nurse who
worked in obstetrics.
Henry, 76, retired as a fine
arts professor. The couple
met on a blind date when
Henry, who grew up in the
Netherlands, emigrated
to Canada after World
War II and his country
was recovering from the
devastation.
“I was a young man and I
decided to take my chances in North America.”
Now married for 52 years, the couple has six children – four
daughters and twin sons. They have eight grandchildren, two step
granddaughters and two great grandsons.
Their children and grandchildren have visited throughout the
years and now their oldest daughter is in the process of building a
home on St. George Island.
“She’s still working as a geologist and she travels quite a lot but
this will be her winter home,” Juniey said.
The couple regards St. George Island as a home.
“We’ve been very happy here and we have lots of friends,” Henry
said. “We are part of the community here.”
They love to walk the beaches and Henry enjoys painting area
beach scenes and landscapes. He teaches art classes and his work
hangs in a local gallery. He often donates proceeds to area charities.
The couple annually judges a local arts competition sponsored by the
Philaco Women’s Club of Apalachicola.
There are no formal Snowbird clubs on the island although they
formed a special group with others some years ago called the “Royal
Order of the Oysters.”
The group meets a couple times a year to share happy hour,
stories and activities like fishing on the beach.
And in the spirit of community, all are welcome.

Destin Location
Dining with a View
By Karen Harrell
In real estate there is no doubt that
“location, location, location” often is what
drives a sale.
And that’s also true for an area
restaurant group that boasts world-class
views for its four seafood-themed dining
establishments.
The Crab Trap Seafood and Oyster Bar
opened its first restaurant some 20years ago
in a prime, gulf-front location along Scenic
98 at James Less Park in Destin, Fla. In
the intervening years, two more gulf-front
locations have been added on Okaloosa
Island and Perdido Key and the latest
addition in Pensacola with a sweeping view
of Pensacola Bay.
Each restaurant features open air views
and are rustic in design with local art on the
walls.
The four restaurants are owned by the

also owns several other marquee Gulf

Coast businesses including the dueling
piano themed Howl at the Moon bar at The
Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island, Nighttown
in Destin, Blackstone Golf Course in Mossy
Head, Fla., and a half dozen more.
Operations director James Johnson has
worked with the company since 1987 and he
said the Snowbird market is an integral part
of their year-round business plan.
“We like the Snowbirds and we work
hard at trying to get the word out about our
specials at Snowbird roosts and different
functions,” Johnson said. “We do a lot more
hands-on marketing to the Snowbirds.
Everyone likes to feel welcomed.”
Johnson said price point is important
year-round but especially for their winter
guests with daily specials starting at $5.99
for items not normally found on their menu
including beef stew, chicken pot pie and fish
tacos.
One of the best deals is the “Early Bird

Barbershop
By Jahna Jacobson
A little bass, a little tenor.
A little Florida, a little Alabama. A little Minnesota, a little Canada.
Across the Gulf Coast, barbershop choruses bring people together from across the state
and the continent.
Along the panhandle to Gulf Shores, the groups are an opportunity for friends old and
new to meet up in perfect harmony.
The Emerald Coast Chorus, based in Okaloosa County, isn’t afraid of a little competition.
Last April they placed third in the Sunshine District, beating out choruses from all over
Florida.
“We got third overall, which is phenomenal for an up-and-coming chorus,” said Allan
Stearns, the group’s vice president. “We were up against large choruses from big cities, and
placing third was something we have never done before.”
The group includes about 35 members, ages 14 to 85. Based in Okaloosa County, the
all-male acappella chorus, is dedicated to musical excellence and the preservation of the this
uniquely American style of music. Since its inception in 1978, the Emerald Coast Chorus
have become an integral part of the Okaloosa County arts community.
“We do reach out to the youth and have some youth in our chorus,” Stearns said. “We are
trying to keep the hobby of singing barbershop alive.”
And once people are hooked, they are hooked for life, he added.
“We have a couple winter guests who sing with us, Canadian winter visitors along with
local friends and out-of-towners,” Stearns said. “They return every year and become a part
of the chorus when they are here.”
The chorus’s next big event is the Friends and Lovers concert on Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m.at
the Emerald Coast Convention Center. The show will include performances by the Emerald
Coast Chorus and the choral groups from three local high schools: Niceville, Crestview and
Rocky Bayou Christian. Also featured will be the all-female Sugar Beach Chorus. Finishing
out the night is a performance by the world champion barbershop quartet, Stormfront. The
champs perform music and comedy in the barbershop tradition.
“The Friends and Lovers theme is for Valentine’s Day,” Stearns said. “We’ll be
performing a lot of love-related ballads and fun songs. And we always join in one mass
group to perform a patriotic number. It will be a light and lively show.”
One, two, and three bedroom fully equipped condos on the beach
Monthly winter one bedroom rates starting at $1249. The longer you stay, the more you save.
Extend a stay. Its still cold back home. Stay with us the month of March and extend your stay for the
month of April at the same monthly rate OR stay at least two nights starting at $42.00 per night.
1-800-428-2726
www.seaspraycondos.com or email us at [email protected]
Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door, and $10 for students ages 6 to 18.
Last year about 900 people attended the annual show.
Tickets are available at www.emeraldcoastchorus.com, or at PS Gifts in Fort Walton
Beach; Bayou Books in Niceville, or Connect with Flowers in Shalimar. Or ticket buyers can
contact Stearns at 850-496-1769.
The Emerald Coast Chorus will compete again in April in Orlando. Stearns said he has
high hopes for this year’s group.
“I hope we move up – from number three to number two, or even number one,” he said.
In Gulf Shores Ala., singers from all four corners of the country meet to sing four-part
harmony with the The Four Winds Barbershop Chorus
The chorus, made up of snowbirds who gather every year in Gulf Shores, Ala., is
celebrating 17 years of singing and camaraderie. Founded by a small, casual gathering of
friends in 1994, the chorus has grown to about 30 chorus members.
The chorus is open to new members, and anyone interested in singing can attend
rehearsals. Members flock to the Gulf Coast every winter from Wisconsin, Michigan,
Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Georgia and even Ontario.
The group performs at local churches, retirement homes and charity events, sometimes
as the full chorus but other times a quartet will get together and perform.
But they don’t let the seasons keep them separated. During the summer months, the
group gets together in Michigan, many of them travelling in the same RVs that bring them
to the Gulf Coast.
For singing snowbirds in the Pensacola, Fla., area, there are always opportunities to sing
with The Fiesta Barbershop Chorus. The chorus has about 20 active members and has been
bringing harmonies to the Gulf Coast for 52 years.
The group participates in numerous events and competitions throughout the year, which
offers members to opportunity to meet and medley with groups from across the region.
The Fiesta chorus is the Pensacola chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and part
of the Sunshine District which covers the state of Florida. Choruses in Alabama, Mississippi
and Louisiana are part of the Dixie District.
The Sunshine District has 40 different chapters, and although they compete, they are
known to harmonize as well. The society has put out a booklet of what we call barber pole
cat songs, a collection of traditional barbershop songs, and at any gathering everyone knows
the standards can spontaneously start a number.
For more information on the Four Winds Barbershop Chorus, call Jim Bero at 920-6768058. For more information on the Fiesta Barbershop Chorus, visit www.harmonize.com/

Hatch says St. James Bay Golf Club was the
first golf course built in Franklin County. It’s the
only championship golf course between Panama City and Tallahassee and over to Ocala, Fla.
The par-72 course plays 6,730 yards from the tips and has four tee boxes. Wetlands and
water hazards are on every hole, but Hatch said the wetland obstacles are more visual. Many
of them are just past the tee box and it takes only a sand wedge to get over them.
“Once you get over the initial shock, it’s pretty easy,” Hatch said. “It’s all the golf course you
could want.”
One attraction of the course is its serenity. Once you tee off the first hole, you don’t see
anybody else. The condos are out of view and Hatch has a 10-minute tee time instead of the
normal 8 minutes.
“We don’t want golfers to feel like they’re rushed,” he said.
Hatch says the course’s signature hole is actually its easiest – the par-3 17th. A lake sits
beside the green with a big bunker in front and two behind it. Its most unique hole is one of
its par-5s. It’s only 374 yards on a direct line. You can tee over a small wetland then have the
option to lay up at 130-150 yards or go at the green, which is front by wetlands.
A view of the Gulf of Mexico is on the seventh green, eighth green fifth tee and 12th hole.
The greens are medium- to large-sized and they do not overseed. Golf carts are equipped
by GPS system.
Accommodations are available at the course, including condos and golf villas. Plus, you
can join in golfing groups of 12 to 20 players.
The practice facility features a full driving range, chipping green, bunker, and two
putting greens. The pro shop includes apparel, accessories and rental clubs. Hatch offers golf
instruction.

Celebrate Mardi Gras!
Each year it seems that Mardi Gras (Mah-dee-Grah) on the Gulf Coast gets bigger
and bigger!
The annual celebration revolves around the Lenten season and is months-long.
Krewe’s fundraise throughout the year to bring you the colorful beads, throws and tasty
treats like Moon Pie’s.
There are balls, champagne breakfasts and parades of all description. Most are
family-friendly and some highlight children, pets and even boats!
Interested in joining in the fun? Many of the events are open to the public and some
of the parades welcome new entries.
This list below includes only the immediate Gulf Coast. There are a couple hundred
more possibilities in nearby Mobile, Ala., Mississippi Gulf Coast and, of course, New
Orleans.
So, grab a blanket, layer your clothing, pack a cooler with goodies, stow away a few
lawn chairs in your car and head out early to reserve your spot!
Remember the key words “Throw Me Some Beads Mister!”
And if that doesn’t work, holding a small child or pet will!

Gorrie Ice Museum,
John Gorrie Museum State Park
Where would we be without ice and airconditioning – particularly in the South?
Fortunately we only have brief glimpses
of such times during infrequent power
outages and hurricanes. Arriving in 1833
and remaining until his death in 1855,
Dr. John Gorrie, a brilliant physician and
inventor, developed a refrigeration unit
used to cool the rooms of yellow fever
patients. His machine laid the groundwork
for modern refrigeration and air conditioning
and was the first patented ice machine. A
replica of Gorrie’s ice-machine, built from
the specifications of his 1851 patent, is on
display in the museum. The visitor center is
open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The center is closed on Thanksgiving,
Christmas and New Year’s Day.

1967. The structure was resurrected in 1992
after vacationers Rex and Cleo Partington
stumbled upon and purchased the crumbling
remains. The modern Dixie Theatre
reopened in 1997 and is today run by the
Partington’s daughter – aptly named – Dixie.

Lynn Haven
The town of Lynn Haven marks its 100th
birthday this year. Established in 1911 as
the third of three Union Veterans Colonies in the South, Lynn Haven’s earliest
residents came primarily from the north.
Fitzgerald, Georgia was established in
1896. St. Cloud, Florida was established in
1909. Although each of the three “Old Soldiers Colonies” were organized separately
by independent development companies,
each site was chosen for “health, climate
and productiveness of the soil” and each
recruited future land owners through the
use of “The National Tribune” a newspaper
of the Grand Army of the Republic veterans’ organization. The “old soldiers” were
of an advanced age by the time they came
to Lynn Haven and each year the “last roll
call” diminished the population.

History
Mobile Mardi Gras
Think Mardi Gras originated in New Orleans? Locals will quickly dispel that notion.
In 1703 the tiny French colony of Mobile
observed North America’s first Mardi Gras
when the Cowbellion de Rakin society took
loudly to the streets in 1830 armed with
rakes, hoes and cowbells plundered from a
hardware store, feasting on food and drink.
They marched on New Year’s Eve and not
Fat Tuesday, but they were a true antecedent of Mardi Gras in Mobile and the first
mystic societies, which were later formed
in the 1830s. Later, in 1857, the Mobile
members of the Cowbellian de Rakin Society traveled to New Orleans and assisted
with the formation of the Mystic Krewe of
Comus, to this day New Orleans’ most
prestigious Mardi Gras society. From these
early roots grew the wonderful Mardi Gras
celebrations found today in the Port City.

How Bad is Third
Hand Smoke?
The John Tesh Radio Show
“Intelligence For Your Life”
airs locally in Panama City on 100.1
FM from 6 p.m.-11 p.m. Mon. - Fri.
and Pensacola 94.1, 5 a.m.-10 a.m.
Mon.-Fri. and Sun. 2 p.m.-7 p.m.
Have you ever stepped in an elevator and
known that the person in there before you just
had a cigarette? Or hopped in the car of a smoker?
Or hugged your grandpa and smelled his cigars on his sweater? You were just exposed
to THIRD hand smoke. We read about this in Time magazine. According to a growing
number of experts, the harmful compounds of tobacco residue may still be active enough
to harm us – and especially young children. That residue can get imbedded in hair,
clothes, furniture and carpets.
Unlike second hand smoke, which you inhale when someone next to you is puffing
away – third hand smoke lingers and can be inhaled long after someone’s stubbed
out their cigarette. Scientists are just starting to study this – but so far the evidence is
scary. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that nicotine levels
remained constant in a room where smokers lit up regularly. That means that smoke does
NOT dissipate once the cigarette is out. It’s also known that children living in apartment
buildings where their neighbors smoke, have double the level of nicotine in their blood.
This is even though they don’t live with a smoker themselves.
Even though scientists haven’t confirmed a link yet between third hand smoke and
health dangers – experts say the current evidence should be enough to convince parents
that no exposure to cigarette smoke, even third hand, is safe for kids or adults. Dr.
Jonathan Winickoff, a pediatrician from Harvard Medical School says it’s a fact – we
need to understand that cigarette smoke doesn’t just disappear. Just because someone
goes outside to smoke doesn’t mean they’re not bringing the smoke back inside with
them. It can get into our bodies. He says, unless the smoker comes inside, changes their
clothes and takes a shower – you are being exposed.

Look at any outdoor photograph of American men taken before 1960 and you’ll see
every last man wearing a hat.
Be it a fedora or homburg, slouch or porkpie, Panama or boater, hats used to be as
essential as shoes, adding a fine flourish to proper manly appearance.
Remember?
The hat was so common that it found its way into everyday language: Keep it under your
hat; my hat’s off to you; pass the hat; thrown my hat in the ring; if the hat fits, wear it!
Old hat was the expression, “You’re talking through your hat.”
After graduating from college in the 1950s, my first stop before finding a job was to
a hat shop to buy that period’s fundamental symbol of successful manhood. I chose a
combination slouch/porkpie.
It was a silly looking lid that you see today only here and in reruns of grumpy old Jack
Lemon and Walter Mattheau wearing loud pants and squeaky shoes.
Honestly, my porkpie made me feel like an adult for the first time in my life. It told the
world that I was now a man of substance, someone not to be trifled with. And in a Chicago
winter, with wind chill factors of minus 40, it had a practical side as well.
Then, suddenly and without warning, hats were passé.
I wore my new porkpie about as long as I would wear my Nehru suit a decade later. The
fashion was first wounded by a revolt against rigid postwar organizational standards, then,
some say, single-handedly killed off the day Jack Kennedy’s attended his 1961 presidential
inauguration — bareheaded.
By then, I was working at a Chicago advertising agency where one of my first
assignments was to help create a campaign for The Hat Council to make their products
popular again. But it was as futile as trying to bring back the buggy whip.
I remember wishing the revolt had been against neckties instead.
Suddenly Trivia: What is a hat block?
a) an ice hockey play
b) someone sitting in front of you in the theatre wearing a large hat
c) a block or mold on which a hat is shaped and ironed.
By 1966, even confirmed hat guy, Frank Sinatra, ditched his expensive fedora when he
wed Mia Farrow. He couldn’t afford to look old fashioned with a 21-year-old lady on his arm.
The traditional hat was dead as the dodo.
According to many, this is precisely when man began his descent down a path of
deterioration and ignominy, never again to feel that proud camaraderie with his fellow gent
on the street.
Today, the best we have for our heads is the baseball cap, usually advertising some
tractor, beer, or bowling team. It’s a child’s hat, which, like shorts, grown men should never
be seen in. Especially when worn backwards.
How far into sartorial hell must man descend?
My old slouch/porkpie is long gone, by now probably a collector’s item sold on eBay.
I wonder what today has taken its place as the symbol of entry into adulthood. Surely,
nothing as stylish, as substantial, as striking.
I say bring back the hat. We’ll all be a far better for it.
I’m not just talking through my porkpie here. But keep that under your hat.
