FALL PICTURE DAY – Was your

VIRGINIA AVENUE DROP OFF -Please do not park in the drop off zone in
front of the school at drop off or pick up. We
are trying to have the City correct the signage
because the zone in front of the school should
have NO PARKING during the posted hours.
Think of this area as if it were the loading zone
at LAX – for the immediate loading and
unloading of passengers – minus the endless
loop of the recorded reminders! NO ONE
SHOULD PARK IN THE DROP OFF ZONE AND
LEAVE THEIR CAR. If you arrive to pick up your
child before their dismissal time, we will ask
you to circle the block. When parents park in
the loading zone it snarls traffic all up and
down Virginia Avenue, forces other parents to
double park, and creates very unsafe
conditions for children. Please cooperate with
our hardworking valets – Ofelia and Sergio
Rodriguez – and act to protect the safety of all
Edison students.
KID BIZ TRAINING FOR PARENTS –
Friday, October 10 at 8:30 am in the computer
lab, we’ll offer an orientation to this Spanish
and English reading program for grades 2-5.
FRIDAY FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT:
FROZEN – PTA and the Kinder Committee are
presenting the movie Frozen on Friday
evening October 10 at 5:00 pm There will be
no admission charged at this movie night since
we had technical difficulties at the spring
presentation of Frozen and promised a rain
check. The Kinder Committee will be offering
a hot dog dinner and treats for sale. Children
are invited to come in costume (either from
the movie Frozen or in their Halloween
Costume). The movie will be held in the
Edison cafeteria.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: FOCUS –
A CRITICAL THINKING SKILL FOR
SCHOOL SUCCESS
You don’t have to work with children for very long to know that there is
tremendous variability in their ability to focus and pay attention. Of course
there are differences by age, but some children can attentively listen to
instructions, start tasks without multiple reminders, and sustain energy and
attention until the task is completed. Others of the same age can struggle to
attend to instruction or directions, fuss and procrastinate about beginning an
assignment, and really struggle to stay with a task until it’s done. Homework in
some homes is a breeze and in others, it’s a battle.
There can be several different reasons why children seem to struggle
with focus and attention. Research suggests that there is a hereditary tendency
for attention difficulties, but not all problems with focus indicate ADHD.
Emotional distractions (stress, trauma, anxiety or depression) can impair focus
and attention and interfere with learning. When attention skills are
underdeveloped, it makes it hard for a child to control his or her impulses,
maintain focus, and hold information in his or her working memory. It’s not
really the case that a child can’t pay attention – it’s that he or she can’t pay
attention to what you want them to pay attention to. It’s easy for a parent to
think that their child has strong attention skills when they can be intently
absorbed in reading, playing with legos, playing video games, etc. But the
challenge is being able to maintain focus and attention on non-preferred tasks.
Increasingly, research indicates that weak attention skills can be
strengthened and stretched through deliberate instruction and practice in
keeping ones brain quiet. Strengthening weak attention skills usually results in
dramatic improvement in behaviors typically associated with ADD or AD/HD.
We’re fortunate this year to have some additional resources on campus
to help us learn more about how to support children with weak attention skills.
The UCLA School Function Program (SFP), co-directed by Developmental
Pediatrician and researcher Dr. Alica Kuo and Social Worker Bobby Verdugo, is
working with us this year on counseling, parent education, teacher consultation,
and individual consultations for parents who have concerns about their
children’s attention skills. On selected Monday afternoons, the SFP will be
offering clinic dates at Edison from 1:00-4:00 p.m There will be opportunities
for 3-4 families to consult with a developmental pediatrician about attention
concerns. If you think you would like to take advantage of one of these clinics,
please contact Yoly Gutierrez so we can get an idea of how many slots we’ll
need to schedule. And watch for upcoming parent workshops so we can learn
more together about attention challenges and promising practices.

Zona de Desembarque en Virginia Avenue–
Por favor no se estacionen en la zona de
desembarque en frente de la escuela ni cuando
dejen a sus hijos ni cuando los recojan. Estamos
trabajando con la Ciudad para corregir los letreros
porque la zona en frente de la escuela de decir NO
ESTACIONAMIENTO durante las horas designadas.
Piensen de esta área como la zona de desembarque
de LAX – para subir y bajar pasajeros
inmediatamente solamente – ¡menos los recordatorios
grabados sin fin! NADIE SE DEBE

Congelado – La PTA y el Comité de Kindergarten
presentarán la película Congelado el viernes 10 de
octubre a las 5:00 pm. No se cobrará la entrada en
esta noche de película porque tuvimos dificultades
técnicas en la presentación de Congelado en la
primavera y prometimos validar su entrada. El
comité de Kindergarten ofrecerá perros calientes y
postres de venta. Se les pide a los niños que vengan
en disfraz (ya sea de la película Congelado o en su
disfraz de Halloween). La película se presentará en la
cafetería de Edison.
No se necesita trabajar con niños por mucho tiempo para saber que hay
variabilidad tremenda en sus habilidades de enfocarse y poner atención. Claro hay
diferencias por edad, pero algunos niños pueden escuchar atentamente a las
instrucciones, empezar trabajos sin múltiples recordatorios, y mantener energía y
atención hasta que terminen el trabajo. Otros de la misma edad pueden batallar para
atender la instrucción o direcciones, quejarse y procrastinar sobre el comienzo de la
asignación, y realmente batallar para mantenerse con el trabajo hasta que esté
terminado. La tarea en algunos hogares puede ser fácil y en otros, es una batalla.
Puede ser por varias razones diferentes que los niños parecen batallar con el
enfoque y atención. Las investigaciones sugieren que hay tendencia hereditaria para
las dificultades de atención, pero no todos los problemas con enfoque indican ADHD

jugando video juegos, etc. Pero el reto es poder mantener el enfoque y atención en los
trabajos que no son sus preferidos.
Siempre aumentando, las investigaciones indican que habilidades débiles de
atención pueden ser fortalecidas y estiradas por instrucción deliberada y práctica en
mantener el cerebro silencioso. Fortaleciendo habilidades débiles de atención puede
llegar a mejoramiento dramático en comportamientos típicamente asociados con ADD
y ADHD
Somos afortunados este año de tener algunos recursos adicionales en la
escuela para ayudarnos aprender más sobre cómo apoyar a los niños con habilidades
débiles de atención. El Programa de UCLA de Funciones Escolares (SFP), co-dirigido por
la Pediatra de Desarrollo Dra. Alice Kuo y Trabajador Social Bobby Verdugo, están
trabajando con nosotros este año en consejería, educación de padres, consultas con los
maestros, y consultas individuales para padres quienes tienen preocupaciones sobre las
habilidades de atención de sus hijos. En los lunes elegidos por la tarde, el SFP ofrecerá
fechas de clínica en Edison de 1:00 a 4:00 p.m. Tendremos oportunidades para 3 – 4
familias que consulten con un pediatra de desarrollo sobre preocupaciones de
atención. Si ustedes piensan que les gustaría aprovechar una de estas clínicas, por
favor comuníquense con Yoly Gutiérrez para que tengamos una idea de cuantos
espacios debemos planear. Y esperen talleres de padres que se acercan para que
podamos aprender más juntos sobre los retos de atención y prácticas prometedoras.

RE: Picketers outside Edison Language Academy
Dear Parents:
A contract dispute between a District general contractor and one of their subcontractors has
resulted in picketing at Edison Language Academy, creating disruption at drop-off and a distraction
for students. While the District holds its contractors to a high standard of behavior on and around
our school sites and while we do not agree with either the method nor the message, the picketing
does fall within First Amendment rights and the picketers have told us that they intend to continue.
The District is working with both the general contractor and the subcontractor to move this
situation to resolution. The District has clearly identified procedures in place to assist
subcontractors with claims during the construction process. Unfortunately neither the general
contractor nor the subcontractor have responded to the District’s request for the documentation
necessary to move a claim forward in order to resolve their internal payment matter. There is also
the perception that the subcontractor is a small business or a minority-owned business. It is not..
We do not understand why they have chosen to insert race into this contract dispute.
The District will continue to facilitate discussion between both parties. In the meantime, given the
logistical limitations of the school’s entrance and the fact we cannot force a solution, I would ask our
parents to please be patient. Please reassure your children that the protesters are not angry with
them and do not represent a threat to them. Their dispute is not with our school or staff. We have a
locked campus immediately after drop off and have many procedures in place to keep students safe.
This does represent an opportunity to explain to children that protest is a form of free speech and is
protected by the First Amendment of our Constitution. The teachers and I have been sharing this
message with students as well.
Although this contract dispute has very little to do with SMMUSD or Edison, the protesters are off
campus in the public forum exercising their First Amendment rights. If the protest gets too close or
interferes with safety at drop off or pick up , our security staff and/or SMPD will move them off.
While this is frustrating for many, the District is doing everything in its power to facilitate resolution.

subcontratistas con reclamaciones durante el proceso de construcción. Desafortunadamente ni el
contratista general ni el subcontratista han respondido a la solicitud del Distrito de la documentación
necesaria para mover un reclamo hacia adelante con el fin de resolver su asunto de pago interno.
También existe la percepción de que el subcontratista es una pequeña empresa o una empresa
propietaria de minorías. No es. No entendemos por qué han optado por insertar imágenes y cuestiones
de racismo en esta disputa contractual.
El Distrito continuará facilitando la discusión entre ambas partes. Mientras tanto, debido a las
limitaciones logísticas de entrada de la escuela y el hecho de que no podemos forzar una solución, yo
les pido a nuestros padres que por favor tengan paciencia. Por favor, asegúrenles a sus hijos que las

para ellos. Su disputa no es con nuestra escuela ni con el personal de la escuela. Además, recuérdenles

explicarles a los niños que la protesta es una forma de libertad de expresión y está protegida por la
Primera Enmienda de nuestra Constitución. Los maestros y yo hemos estado compartiendo este

Aunque esta disputa contractual tiene muy poco que ver con SMMUSD o Edison, los manifestantes
están fuera de la escuela en el foro público y pueden usar sus derechos de la Primera Enmienda. Si la
protesta se acerca demasiado o interfiere con la seguridad cuando los alumnos están llegando o
saliendo de la escuela, nuestro personal de seguridad y / o SMPD los van a remover. Aunque esto es

If not satisfied within 30 days of the delivery of your donation item to the
organization, you may return any one item for a return of your donation that is equal
to the amount listed for that particular item. Returns of Donations will be paid via mail
within 30 days of confirmation that the item has been returned to the organization.
In some cases, it will be necessary for you to ship the item back at your expense to
Signature Fundraising Inc. No Returns of Donations will be given after 30 days beyond
delivery of item to the organization. We cannot exchange an item with a different item.
Liability Policy
If you have any problems with your order, you must call
our office at 1-800-645-3863 within 15 days after receipt.
Beyond 15 days of delivery, Signature Fundraising® Inc. will
not be held responsible for any problems with your order.
