Sideline Info Packet - Birmingham Seaholm Cheerleading
Welcome to Seaholm Cheerleading! Welcome to the team! The Seaholm Cheer Team is many things… a sports team, a family, an avenue for life lessons. I know that joining a new team, whether it is your first or fourth year (or whether you’re an athlete or a parent!) can be a scary thing. In this letter, I hope to introduce you to myself (the Coach), our program’s core beliefs and some of the new challenges we’ll tackle on our journey together this year. Coach Mel If you or your daughter is going to spend this much time with me, it might be helpful to know a little bit about me outside of the Seaholm Fitness Center. My name is Melissa Nacy and I am the Head Coach of the Birmingham Seaholm Cheerleading Team. The girls call me Coach Mel (long story). This is my 6th year coaching at Seaholm. I started my coaching career while in high school, working with my own alma mater, Eastland Elementary! I cheered for Roseville High School, where we were State Finalists 2005. During college, I was a staff member for North American Spirit. I am a graduate of the University of Michigan - Go Blue! I am a Team Leader/Product Owner of a software development team for Title Source (sister company to Quicken Loans) in Downtown Detroit. I live in Royal Oak with my fiancé, Jon, and our yellow lab, Charlie. Jon and I are getting married on July 30, 2016 (yes, the same weekend as cheer camp!). Core Beliefs Below are 3 of our core beliefs. These guide us through each practice and through all challenges we face. This is a sneak peak of our content for team circles throughout the season. Team first o Cheerleading is a team sport. There are no individual statistics. During a performance or a competition, a “star player” is useless. We fail together. We succeed together. Build each other up. Support each other. o In order to lead others, you must first lead yourself. We belief in servant-leadership, a leadership philosophy rooted in wanting to help others. Anyone can be a leader. There is no such thing as too many chiefs. o Respect each other. o Family. It all starts with your mindset o Believe in yourself. o Perspective. Think about perspective. Think about what the world looks like from the other person’s shoes. How does this change your opinion? o Commitment. Commit to yourself. Commit to your goals. Commit to your teammates. o What does that little voice in your head tell you? You talk to yourself more than you talk to anyone else. Have a positive mindset. o What you focus on, you find. The human is only capable of focusing on so many things at a time (some subscribe to the power of 3). If you are truly focused on something, you will find the results. If you are not focused, the results will not just magically show up. The choice is yours. We make choices every day. The outcome is (most of the time) in your hands. o Have high standards and high expectations. Be obsessed with the process of being great o Believe in the value of hard work. o If it was easy, everyone would do it. It's the hard work that makes it great. It’s the hard work that makes it worth it. o If you're not scared, you don't get to be brave. o Perfection before Progressions. Quality over Quantity. o Compare yourselves to others and you'll be good. Find your own greatness. o Greatness is a journey. It does not just show up on game day. Start now. o If you are status quo, someone will eat your lunch. o What’s Coming Up in 2016-2017 When Seaholm Cheerleading started up again after a ~15 year hiatus, there were 8 girls who believed in their dream. Each year, we try to build upon that dream. We build a stronger foundation and achieve new goals each year. In the 2016 Winter Competitive Season, we broke every school record on the books for Competitive Cheer. Where should we go from here? Every year, we invest in leadership development. We end up with upperclass(wo)men that are ready to take on the challenge of leadership. As a coach, I view my role as a guide to help the girls achieve their girls. These are the goals that I hear our upperclass(wo)men most excited about for the 2016-17 season (and okay, okay, some I added myself). Continue traditions. A lot of our traditions are kept under wraps until the girls experience them for the first time. This allows them to be a truly memorable experience. Traditions create strong memories and strong bonds. Build an alumnae family. Focus on conditioning. Strong athletes build strong programs. It is a lot easier to throw a back tuck when your body is conditioned to throw a back tuck. Throw 3 tumbling skills (including springs and tucks) in Round 2 in Winter 2017. Achieve the One-Legged Extension Bonus in Round 3 in Winter 2017. Earn the Execution Bonus in Round 3 in Winter 2017 Score about 700 in January 2017 Hold interviews during Competitive Tryouts. Interviewing is a critical life skill that you can’t start practicing early enough! I cannot wait to get started. The journey is the best part. There is something so rewarding about seeing a vision 8 months out and starting to work on it today. There is something so fulfilling about being a part of a team, about knowing you are a part of something bigger than yourself. For me, watching girls develop into confident athletes, leaders, and young women who understand their own potential is the most fulfilling thing I get to do every day. I am fortunate to have an opportunity to coach you and your daughter(s). Here we go! Cheers! Seaholm Sideline Cheerleading 2016 Contract Page 1 of 3 VALUES: Seaholm Cheerleading aims to develop hardworking, passionate athletes whom possess positive attitudes and act with integrity. Through participation in the Seaholm Cheerleading program, young women will develop complementary teamwork and leadership skills. Seaholm Cheerleaders are goal-orientated, uphold strong school spirit, and understand the importance of academic achievement and community involvement. Seaholm Cheerleaders hold themselves to high standards on campus and in the community. ATTENDANCE: Cheerleaders are required to attend ALL practices, games, tumbling sessions, team bonding events, team fundraisers and any other team related events. All events (practice or otherwise) on the calendar are required. Cheerleaders are allowed 3 excused absences between August 2nd and October 28th. Exceeding the allowed amount of absences will result in being removed from the team. Extreme circumstances will be reviewed on an individual basis. Our “official” season begins August 2nd, alongside all other Fall Sports. Practices prior to August 2nd will not count against your absences. However, please note that these practices are critical to our success as a team at camp and during performances on the sidelines and at halftime. You must communicate to your coach WHENEVER you are missing a practice. “No-call no-shows” OR unexcused absences are unacceptable and will result in removal from the team. Please understand the commitment you are making. Cheerleading is a large time commitment. Be on time. A tardy is defined as arriving 3 minutes past start time. TWO tardies are equal to ONE excused absence. Being in the building or the practice facility but not fully prepared will count as a tardy. Be prepared. o Fully dressed (proper attire, jewelry off, shoes on and tied, hair up, taped, etc.) o You must be taped by a trainer or coach BEFORE practice begins o Bring a water bottle TO ALL EVENTS Appointments (including health/doctor/dentist/orthodontist), vacations, jobs, concerts, and transportation issues (unless an emergency situation) are not valid reasons to miss practice. Please plan your schedule accordingly. Illness, school-related commitments and serious family obligations (weddings, funerals, etc.) are permitted but must be discussed with the coach in advance. These will count as one or multiple of your allowed 3 excused absences. If you are in school, you are required to attend practice. If you do not attend all practices the week prior to a game or competition your coach reserves the right to not allow you to perform at the following game or competition. If you are unprepared for a game or competition, the coach reserves the right to sit you out from the game or competition. The athlete is responsible for any material missed due to an absence. It halts team progress to catch one athlete up due to an absence. The athlete is responsible to make arrangements to learn what they missed BEFORE the next practice. Injuries: Athletes must provide a note from a doctor or be seen by the trainer when injured to sit out o Attend all events in full dress o Do not use your phones or other electronic devices during event o Participate in activities that do not put you at risk for further injury (i.e., if your wrist is injured, you must still stretch your splits, build leg muscle, etc.). Your commitment and dedication are essential to the success of the team. Cheerleading is a TEAM sport. A stunt group with 3 athletes is like a chair with 3 legs. Cheerleaders cannot stunt with 3 out of 4 members of their stunt group. Be present physically and mentally. Seaholm Sideline Cheerleading 2016 Contract Page 2 of 3 ATTIRE: Cheerleaders must wear white cheerleading shoes, shorts and a tank top or t-shirt to practice. Pants, hoodies or other loose clothing is not permitted as this is a safety hazard. Leggings often result in girls being “too hot”; please do not wear leggings. Cheerleaders will not roll their shorts, skorts or skirts at any time. Cheerleaders will not expose their stomachs at practice or at any time they are representing the team. Hair longer than chin length must always be securely pulled back. Fake or long nails are not permitted at any time as this is a safety hazard. Painted nails are permitted at practice but not at games or competitions. ALL piercings, no matter location, visibility, how new they are, etc. must be removed. Cheerleaders will wear different outfits to school and competitions each week. This will be determined at practice by the coach and is not optional. If a cheerleader does not wear the correct outfit to school, the coach reserves the right to sit her from the game. Cheerleaders must also wear proper attire to camps, fundraisers and other cheerleading events. The coaches will advise of this attire as the day approaches. Failure to comply will result in the athlete not participating. Cheerleaders are required to bring their full uniform, shoes, bows and warm ups to every game and competition. Not having the proper uniform and materials can result in sitting out. Cheerleaders must wear the designated team wear, socks, hair style, make-up, etc. at all events. Failure to comply will result in sitting out. If you forget, you sit. Our uniforms and other items are school property. Failure to return items will result in a fine from the school. Athletes are responsible for keeping all issued items clean; they should be returned in the same condition they were issued. A dirty, soiled, ruined, etc. uniform or issued article will result in a fine. We cannot issue this item to the net athlete fairly and it must be replaced. A dirty uniform, outfit, article is not acceptable at games or events and can result in sitting out. THE PRACTICE AND GAME ATMOSPHERE: Cell phones are not to be used by cheerleaders or seen by coaches at any practice, game, competition or other cheerleading event. Texting a parent is not a valid excuse for a cheerleader using her cell phone. If a parent MUST contact a cheerleader, they can reach Coach Melissa at (586) 567-0439. If a cell phone is used or seen by a coach, the coach reserves the right to hold on to the cell phone until the end of the event and to enforce a consequence. Side conversations will not be tolerated at practices, tumbling, or games. The coach reserves the right to enforce a consequence for distracting conversations. Cheerleaders are expected to learn all material whether or not they are scheduled to be in the final performance at that time. Cheerleaders are dismissed following all (dance, cheer, opposing teams, etc.) performances during halftime. They must return to the sideline with no less than 2:00 remaining on the halftime clock. Coach discretion may be used during this time. Cheerleaders are dismissed from the game following a team huddle at the end of football play. Coach discretion may be used during this time. Parents, please do not communicate with your cheerleaders on the sidelines during the game as it is distracting to the other cheerleaders and the performance. Please limit your communication to the designated time during halftime. Seaholm Sideline Cheerleading 2016 Contract Page 3 of 3 REPRESENTING SEAHOLM & ATTITUDE EXPECTATIONS: As an athlete, you represent Seaholm both within the school walls and outside of them. Use good judgment. Even when not wearing your uniform, you are still a representative of Seaholm Cheerleading and Seaholm High School. “Public displays of affection” of any kind will not be tolerated while wearing a uniform, Seaholm High School clothing or Seaholm Cheerleading clothing. Cheerleaders are expected to respect themselves, coaches, teammates, administration, peers and opposing teams at all times. Gossip, disrespect, “drama”, etc. will not be tolerated. This expectation applies to social networking, texting, group texting, etc. All athletes are expected to follow all guidelines set forth by the Seaholm High School Code of Conduct. This includes all academic expectations as well as drug and alcohol guidelines. The coaches reserve the right to enforce a consequence, including removal from the team, if these expectations are not met. If it’s questionable: don’t do it. A positive attitude is critical to the success of a competitive cheerleading team. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: MHSAA requires that student athletes be passing 66% of their classes in order to participate in their sport. PHYSICALS: Physicals are due by June 23rd. Items kept in or lost/stolen from the team room are NOT the responsibility of the coaching staff or Seaholm High School. Do not leave valuables in the team room. The locker room/team room is not monitored. CHAIN OF COMMUNICATION: If you have a concern regarding an athletic situation, we have found that the following line of communication is very effective in resolving issues. 24 Hour Rule: Wait 24 hours before making contact with anyone Start with the Source: Athlete should discuss directly with the coach, in private, face-to-face away from the practice or game site. A telephone call may be necessary to arrange an appointment. If you have a concern, please follow the below chain of communication: 1. Athlete addresses with coach 2. Parent addresses with coach 3.
