s we head into winter and our last issue of 2008, I would
like to extend my warmest wishes to you, our readers,
and to all of our contributors, our SCT team, and of course,
our advertisers who have helped to make Scrapbook & Cards Today
possible this year. Without them, the magazine you hold in your
hands (or read on your screen) could not happen. And, because
of these many individuals, Scrapbook & Cards Today is now being
read in over 100 countries—thank you!
We have had another year of sharing our passion for scrapbooking and card making with you, and I now offer you a challenge. Share
your passion with a friend. There is no better gift this holiday season
than passing on some of your creative expertise; thus enabling a
friend to tell their story and preserve their memories. And, as we

Always up for a challenge, our design team welcomed this latest opportunity to put their
creativity to the test. How did each team member work with these products to make them
their own? Everyone was excited to see just how different four layouts using the same seven
products could be.

I fell in love with the pom pom
trim from Bazzill, but was unsure
how to use it on my layout. Then,
I came up with the idea to cut the
trim and use it to create “snowballs” to dot the “i’s” in my title.
I used the snowfl ake paper, the
epoxy shapes, and the snowfl ake
charms to frame my focal photo.

I loved the sparkly die-cut snowfl ake, but decided to cut it in half
to enable the addition of lots of elements on my page. I loved how
it played up the “snow” theme of the page (as did the snowfl ake
charms). I found that the circle epoxy shapes from My Little Yellow
Bicycle made a great “o.”

I wanted to call attention to the black
in my photos, so I decided to paint
both the chipboard “1” and the pom
pom trim with black acrylic paint.
I also used black ink for stamping and
outlined my journaling strips with
black pen. To draw attention to the
title, I made the epoxy ornament (that
doubles as the number zero) appear to
“hang” by stringing it with wire.

or the fi rst four years of his life, my son had never experienced a New Year’s celebration.

I actually thought it would most likely be about four more years until he did. Boy was I was
wrong. Last New Year’s Eve, not only did my son stay up to watch the ball drop in Times
Square, but he continued his own celebration the next day. These fun and playful photos are from
his one-man-celebration, which I had a blast scrapping. I decided to use the festive occasion of the
photos to sneak in lots of what I normally don’t use on layouts about my boy: pink, purple, and bling.
Here’s what I came up with to showcase this festive little dude.

easy For a quick, yet celebratory layout, I started with a basic block pattern by aligning the two
photos in the center of the page. I let the remaining space (left by my photos) be my guide in deciding the width and length of my journaling block. I printed my journaling onto cardstock and used it to
fi ll in the “block,” thus creating a rectangle in the center of my layout. With the journaling and photos
in place, I added a strip of patterned paper to one side to bring more colour onto the page. On the
opposite side of the photos, I added the title using die-cut letters and a strip of cardstock in a corresponding colour. I fi nished the layout by adding some clear stars in a row, a “countdown” using glitter
number stickers, and rhinestones randomly placed throughout the layout.

for my detailed layout. I kept the same
rectangular shape with the journaling
and photos, however I double-matted
them to add depth and colour. I moved
the title to the photo for a more interesting look. For the journaling, I used the
same journaling block, but I left out two
words and enough space so I was able
to fi ll in those words with glitter letter
stickers. I split up the rectangular shape
of the layout by adding the patterned
paper strip horizontally across the page.

rhinestones, and a glitter element
that tied in the glitter letters from
the journaling.

I kept the same basic rectangle design of
photos and journaling as in the fi rst two,
only I moved the journaling directly onto
the focal photo and placed the title on
the cardstock. I increased the focus on the
title by using a combination of large glitter

journaling was stepped up by making it part
of the focal photo. Strips of the patterned
paper were used to frame everything, thus
surrounding all the elements in the variety of colours. I painted a chipboard swirl
and added it horizontally across the page
to add both movement and whimsy. The
layout was fi nished off with the same clear
stars, rhinestones, and the addition of a
large glitter swirl.

Stitching is a fantastic way to add interest to a project. I sew by
machine or by hand on cards, tags, and even layouts. Here are some of
my favourite stitched projects—just in time for the holidays!

two great ways: first, I used rub-on
stitching on the red paper, and then,
I created some 3D cross-stitches by
applying PVA glue in thin X’s. Once completely dry, I laid the silver foil overtop

s defi ned by the Encarta Dictionary, the word “simple” means
a task that is able to be done quickly, and an end result that
is neither elaborate nor complicated. In our busy lives, this
sounds pretty good! What if there was a way to cut down on time
spent scrapbooking, but not on productivity? What if there was a way
to resist the temptation to add that last page embellishment and still
be happy with the fi nished product? Well, guess what? There is!

For this double page layout, I applied the rule of odds
by working in threes (three individual photos of the
kids, three arrows, three buttons, etc.). I also stuck
with three main colours (using the green the most,
the blues the second most, and the grey-taupe the
least). Finally, I created lots of horizontal movement
across both pages by using the wide green photo block,
the blue strip, the arrows, and the repeated circles
along the top.

When you have a great photo (or a group of photos) that visually have a lot
going for them (lots of colour, detail, or beautiful simplicity) you really don’t
need much more. This is where white space comes in. In this case, it
allows my photo to take centre stage, and, at the same time, it gives the
eye a visual rest. As well, a simple line of stitching creates a frame around
both the photo and the title.

The “friends” button serves two
purposes—it adds interest through
texture and colour; and the word
“friends” reinforces the story of
the relationship between the boys.

For my Snow Time layout, I kept things simple by making sure
that the focal point of the layout was the large photo of my son.
I also wanted a large, clear title that related to the feel of my
photo, so I chose to use silver and white chipboard (I thought
that dark brown or black letters would take away from it).
Finally, I created a visual triangle with the red embellishments
(the word sticker, the button, and the epoxy brads).

Our something special is a project or layout that inspires us to drop
everything and create…and this issue’s project is no exception.

reta created this stunning snowfl ake frame using chipboard snowfl akes from Maya Road and
a wide variety of mediums and techniques. She used cool blues, silvery hues, and small hits
of contemporary black to create an elegant and harmonious backdrop that speaks wonder-
fully to the season. This frame would make the perfect gift, but, on second thought, it may be just too
pretty to give away!
