Care
An aquarium is less work than you think
Choose your aquarium
If possible upwards of 100 l,
make sure of DIN/Euro
norm certification. EHEIM
aquarium cabinets are
strongly built, solid and
suitable for the designed
purpose.
Choose the right
position for your aquarium
Position your aquarium in
a quiet place away from
bright light. Your aquarium
cabinet should be on a
level floor. Please note that
once the tank is filled it
cannot be moved.
Design begins with
the gravel
Mix the washed gravel
(2-4 mm. pieces) with
gravel fertiliser and spread
it in the bottom of your
aquarium, sloping up towards the back (approx. 38 cm depth). This will give
an effect of greater depth
in the aquarium and make
the gravel easier to clean.
Lastly, cover with another
layer of gravel, so that the
fertiliser is not washed away.

Fill in the water
Begin filling the aquarium
with water, letting the
water flow over a bowl, so
as not to disturb the
gravel.
Adding plants
Half-fill the aquarium with
water at about 25°C, add
plants and arrange them
as required. You can find
tips on adding plants to
your aquarium by visiting
our website www.eheim.de
Beautiful aquariums
need excellent equipment
Finish filling your aquarium,
insert a heater and set at
approx. 24°C. Connect
and start your filter (leave
running 24 hrs. a day).
Turn on the light unit for 1012 hrs. per day and add
cleansing bacteria to the
water or filter. Alternatively,
condition the tank without
fish for 2-3 weeks to allow
cleansing bacteria to form.
Add your fish
As a rule of thumb allow
fish up to 4 cm = 1l water,
8 cm = 2l, 12 cm = 3l,
>12 cm = 4l, bigger fish
need up to 4l water per
cm. So that the fish can
get used to the water temperature, leave the fish in
the bag and float them in
the water for about
20 minutes, then carefully
let them out of the bag into
the aquarium.
Feed the fish
sparingly
The fish should be able to
eat the fish food within 90
seconds. Your perfect
partner for feeding your
fish is the EHEIM automatic feeder, which even
allows for snacks at the
push of a button.
Housekeeping is
always important
Clean the gravel regularly.
For this we recommend
the EHEIM gravel cleaning
set or the EHEIM battery
operated sludge extractor.
Freshwater aquariums
Clean out or change the
filter media when the
filter output noticeably
reduces. Always change
only part of the filter
media, so that the cleansing bacteria in the filter
are preserved. For more

The EHEIM internal corner filter has been specially developed
for small aquariums up to 60l. It is the heartbeat of your aquarium and is specifically designed for use with a small volume
of water. The filter maintains the balance of the eco-system,
ensures constant water movement and prevents differing
temperature layers. As a corner filter it takes up little space in
the aquarium and therefore leaves more room for plants and
other decoration. Its suction power is precisely regulated, so
that small livestock (e.g. young shrimps) are not sucked in.

n Mechanical filter media
The coarse material starts the filtration process. The water is
swirled around and larger dirt particles become trapped.
The water then flows through the rest of the filtration process.
Various media perform this function. Particularly effective are
EHEIM MECH and EHEIM bioMECH.
n Biological filter media
After the initial mechanical media treatment, biological media
begin the most important task in the filter. By the colonisation
of important purification bacteria a kind of bacterial lawn is
formed, which feeds on and transforms all kinds of dirt particles harmful to the aquarium. The main role of the biomedia
is to offer the best colonisation conditions for the purification
bacteria. EHEIM biological media ensure stabile conditions in
the tank due to the best possible surface structure (eg.
EHEIM SUBSTRATpro).
Tip: Never wash or change all the biomedia at the same time.
This would destroy the colonies and hinder re-colonisation.
For partial cleaning the filter baskets in the external filter and
the filter module in aquaball are ideal.

This type of filter material draws out and retains pollutants
from the water. These can be chemical compounds, such
as chlorine from tap water used when setting up your tank
or chemical remains after treatment of livestock.
Tip: Since adsorptive filter media retain pollutants but
do not really convert them, they need to be changed
regularly.
n Chemical filtration
EHEIM TORFpellets chemically influence the pH value
and water hardness.
Tip: Peat expands in water. Therefore lightly rinse, not
wash, before use. Peat must be changed after 3-6 weeks.
Do not use peat together with activated carbon.
EHEIM phosphateout binds phosphate to the iron and
extracts it from the water circulation. It also retards the
growth of algae in the aquarium. Free of harmful substances. For fresh and marine water.

Specially structured materials provide out-standing purification. Water permeates them evenly, and coarse particle residues as well as even the finest particle residues are trapped
mechanically. After a short run-in period, purification bacteria
lodge in the special foam material and ensure the intensive,
biological decomposition of toxins. In addition, carbon pads
have an adsorptive effect: dissolved pollutants are trapped on
their surface and thereby removed from the water cycle.

EHEIM phosphateout
Foam cartridges soaked in an iron compound for chemical
filtration binds the phosphate to the iron and removes it from
the water circulation. It lowers the phosphate content and
retards the growth of algae in your aquarium. It is free from
harmful substances. When the level of phosphate in the
aquarium begins to rise again, the cartridge is exhausted and
must be changed. Only use once. For fresh and marine water.

Prefilter
Art. 4004320
Traps coarse dirt in the priming area and prevents the filter
media from clogging too quickly. The filter basket, which can
be removed easily (EasyClick) and can be cleaned quickly, is
used to draw water directly from the bottom of the aquarium.
The coarse dirt is trapped in the pre-filter and not in the
external filter.

Water-neutral aquarium maintenance spray Art. 4001000
CFC-free, does not contain solvents or oils, free from environmentally toxic substances and harmless to fish. Moving parts
which are regularly subjected to aquarium water tend to get
tight or seize up completely after a while. Apply the spray to
the problem part and it will loosen up within a short period of
time. Supplied with spray tube for inaccessible areas. Particularly recommended for ball valves, taps, hose adapter, sealing
rings and much more.

Before the engineer Eugen Jäger invented the aquarium
adjustable heater, there wasn’t any really satisfactory solution
for controlling the water temperature suitable for different
species.
Obvious ideas often are the best ones. For example the
aquarium heater as a rod. The heating rod is simply hung in
the water and heats it. It is true that the principle is still the
same as decades ago, but a lot has changed in the meantime. And today the JÄGER adjustable heater is an ultramodern electronic thermal device with the best available
technology.
