A FAMILY PASSION
Since the 1970s, the Vögele family has made it its business to open culture to a broader
public. Entrepreneur and patron of the arts Charles Vögele developed the SeedammKulturzentrum in Pfäffikon. In 2010, the foundation board led by his daughter Monica
Vögele gave the centre a new life under the brand name Vögele Kultur Zentrum.
Your father founded the fashion group Charles Vögele,
was an opera singer as well as a racing-car driver and
built the shopping mall Seedamm-Center. What made
him establish a cultural centre in rural Pfäffikon in 1976?
MONICA VÖGELE As a humanist and successful entrepreneur he wanted to give something back to society.
Culture was a topic close to his heart. That’s why
he wanted to make it accessible to a broader public
and to create a centre that would not be daunting to
cultural “beginners”. The choice of location reflects
Pfäffikon’s good traffic connections and the fact
that my father worked and lived in this area. With the
Seedamm-Kulturzentrum he gave the Canton of
Schwyz its first cultural home.
The building is 40 years old – can it still satisfy the requirements of modern-day events?
Yes. My father wanted a multifunctional building
that would fit his era but still reflect the search for
new frontiers, a building that was at once solid and
functional, and aesthetically appealing. The New
York architects Copland, Novak and Israel gave him
a building with exceptionally strong and clear lines,
whose design and functionality are timeless. When
we renovated it in 2010, we basically restored its original design. The grain-cut timber floors, for instance,
are original, and the glass roof still fulfils the wish
that the landscape be integrated.
In 2009, the Charles and Agnes Vögele Foundation
decided to turn its back on the classic concept of exhibiting art, and to pursue a new direction. Why did
the centre have to reinvent itself as the Vögele Kultur
Zentrum?

Ever more art galleries have sprung up in the wider
region around Zurich in the years since 1976, leading
to a cultural glut. We wanted to create an antipode
and offer the public something they won’t find in the
rest of Switzerland. The basic mission has not
changed, however – a broad dissemination of values
in a quality that suits and captivates both the experts
and lay people. Our exhibitions pick up on topics of
social relevance with the aim to get the visitors to
reflect on them and to inspire lively debate. The current exhibition, for example, highlights the concept
of “identity”. We focus on seven elements that define
identity. Part of one’s identity is given, but another
part of it changes constantly as life leaves its imprint.
You are the president of the foundation board and the
creative head of the centre – did you follow in your
father’s footsteps?
No. I endeavour to continue the work of the foundation while infusing my own creativity. My father has
always encouraged my siblings and me to find our
own direction and make our own mistakes. That’s
why I think he would fully back us.

BÜRGI, SCHREIBER AND KÄPPELI: THE HOTEL DYNASTIES OF RIGI KULM
200 YEARS
OF PEAK ADVENTURES
In 1816, Joseph Martin Bürgi, cloth-shearer in Arth and Rigi mountain guide, opened
Switzerland’s first summit hotel, a small inn (“Gasthaus”) on Rigi Kulm. The Queen
of the Mountains thus takes centre stage this year in celebrating the 200th anniversary.
State councillor Dr Feer, publisher Sauerländer from
Aarau, and Mr and Mrs Dolder spent the night of 14
August 1816 at the Gasthaus Rigi-Kulm. This means
that the newly opened establishment is practically
booked out – it has a mere six guest beds. It also means
that Joseph Martin Bürgi had his finger firmly on the
pulse. The well-heeled travellers to the Rigi no longer
wanted to climb to the peak in the dark of night to
witness the fabled sunrise. Five years after opening his
Gasthaus, Joseph Martin Bürgi already had to expand
it and, in 1847, his son Joseph Caspar Bürgi replaced
it altogether with the 130-bed Hôtel Rigi-Kulm.
When, in the 1870s, the Rigi mountain trains began
operating – Europe’s first funicular railway – the
golden era of Rigi tourism was well on its way. The
international elite took turns to indulge in the luxury
of a Rigi Kulm sojourn, now having the option of
three hotels with a total of 630 beds.
The four Schreiber brothers from Arth ran a hotel
empire on the Rigi, topped by the palatial Grand Hotel Schreiber on the Kulm. They hired Europe’s most
renowned chefs and maîtres d’ to pamper their
guests, and also offered plenty of nature, musical entertainment and social context. A day at the grand
hotel cost as much as a worker earned in a week. One
of the guests, a former university colleague of Friedrich Schreiber, was the Bavarian king Ludwig II.
And one of the king’s presents to the hotelier was a

tea set, which is now exhibited in the dining hall of
the present hotel.
STAIRWAYS, FLOORS AND FURNITURE
BEAR TESTIMONY
The dream world didn’t last – the Great Depression
and two world wars made sure of it. In 1949, property developer Ernst Käppeli of Schwyz bought up the
shares in the three bankrupt hotels and, with courage
and entrepreneurial nerve, began building today’s
hotel on Rigi Kulm. He was convinced that it could
operate outside the summer season as well. He opted
for a sober-looking, solid building reminiscent of a
hostelry and made sure to reuse as much of the materials and furnishings of the old establishments as
possible.
The Käppeli family kept modernizing the hotel and
expanded it into a conference and event venue but
also left a door open to the past: today’s guests who
come to enjoy the splendour of the panorama and
the emotionality of the sunrise move about on timehonoured sandstone stairs and parquet flooring, sit
in antique furniture and look into the same mirror as
Ludwig II did once upon a time.
The Hotel Rigi-Kulm looks back on two memorable
centuries indeed. The anniversary will be celebrated
throughout the summer with various events designed
to evoke the past.

Headstrong, optimistic and visionary – Walter Trösch needed to be all of it to transform Morschach’s Swiss Holiday Park from a loss-making venture into a thriving,
highly valued family resort. He braves the constantly changing world with changes
of his own.
Fresh milk on the breakfast table. That’s how simple
an idea can be. For two years now the adventure farm
Fronalp has been part of the Swiss Holiday Park resort. Its cows, goats, horses, ponies, chickens and
rabbits are a main attraction for the young guests.
But there’s more to it for Walter Trösch – the integrated farm brought him a step closer to his vision of a
sustainably run resort. “We produce about 40,000
litres of our own milk per year – energy-efficiently.”
The resort has generally improved its eco-balance by
better targeting the use of electricity, water, heat and
refrigeration. That’s not to say that Walter Trösch
ever lost sight of the business principles. In fact, his
successful merger of tourism and ecology brought
sector recognition last year: Swiss Holiday Park was
awarded the Milestone Tourism Award in the environment category for being carbon neutral.
CLEAR VISION, CLEAR EXPECTATIONS
The only Swiss resort with an integrated farm, the
first Swiss provider to offer short-stay holiday units
with flexible arrival dates, and one of the first Swiss
tourist businesses with an all-inclusive deal for kids
– Walter Trösch is steadily abandoning traditions and
banks on constant innovation. “If it doesn’t work, we
ditch it right away,” he says. He is driven by a strong
sense of responsibility towards his staff of 280. They
need their job tomorrow too, he says. What he demands of himself, he also demands of his staff: “I expect them to be innovators, not just administrators.”
BARGAIN HUNT TO CELEBRATE 20 YEARS
Twenty years ago Meinrad Camenzind, an architect
from Gersau, envisaged building a resort that would
cater equally to families, individual guests, wellness
seekers and conference participants. The implementation of this vision floundered at first. When the
ailing business was taken over by the Schwyzer Kantonalbank in 2002, Walter Trösch managed to realize
its potential after all, thanks to his creative ideas. It
is part of his entrepreneurial understanding to question and to optimize, as is a healthy dose of optimism.
He invests between CHF 1.5 million and CHF 2 million
a year into innovations because the world is not staying still either. “This year’s new attractions are the
family-oriented Flying Fox trail in the woods and the
bargain hunt,” says Walter Trösch. On the occasion
of its 20th anniversary, Swiss Holiday Park is offering its guests special deals that are announced on its
website on the first of each month. No paper is involved, it’s all digital. It’s another idea that he wants
to pursue further.

Clad in rubber boots to stalk the farm, donning a hygienic cap to enter the cheese
cellar and wearing suit and tie to negotiate contracts – René Schönbächler is a
man of many guises. And he also gathered a motivated team around him to launch
the Milchmanufaktur Einsiedeln. It all started rather casually in his student days.
The smell is strong and tickles the nose. The wooden
shelves are laden with dozens of “Bergmutschli” (a
small semi-hard, full-fat mountain cheese). René
Schönbächler randomly picks one up. The managing
director and cheese taster has the same questions
every morning: Is the rind of a uniform colour? Is the
body creamy-soft and the flavour clean? Is the seasoning right? He checks the production log and ends up
nodding appreciatively. The four-week-old Bergmutschli, made from hay milk, is ready to leave the
cheese cellar of the Milchmanufaktur Einsiedeln.
“What we produce here is the real thing,” the agricultural economist says proudly. The hay milk for the
cheeses is produced by cows from the Einsiedeln region that feed on nothing but pasture grass and hay.
That’s good for the cheese because it is made from
raw, untreated milk. It’s good for the region’s value
addition because no intermediate trade is needed.
And it’s good for the consumer: “Cheese made from
natural mountain milk is more aromatic and has a
higher proportion of unsaturated Omega-3 acids,”
René Schönbächler explains. He is convinced that

consumers want authentic products. That’s why the
Milchmanufaktur produces only cheeses, mozzarellas
and yoghurts made from all-natural ingredients, free
of artificial additives. And because ever more people
want to know exactly what they eat, the Milchmanufaktur runs a show dairy and offers guided tours.
FAITH IN REGIONAL PRODUCTS
It became clear to René Schönbächler early on – while
working in New Zealand and France after his apprenticeship as a farmer – that the farms of his native region could not compete with the pricing policy of foreign producers. So he began to explore alternatives in
the context of project work during his studies in agronomics. On paper, he reinvented his parents’ farm,
turning it into a cheese dairy and producing yoghurt
out of the garage.
When Switzerland abolished its milk quota regime in
2009, Einsiedeln’s farmers had to look in new directions – and came upon René Schönbächler and his
project work. One thing led to another and, at the age
of 27, René Schönbächler became the managing
director of the Milchmanufaktur Einsiedeln, founded
by local farmers. In spring 2013, the dairy began to
produce mountain milk yoghurt in an erstwhile
butcher’s shop.
Today it has its own building and offers 17 full-time
equivalent jobs. Not only local farmers trust the
Schönbächler operations, consumers increasingly
do too – Milchmanufaktur products are sold both in
regional retail shops and by the big Swiss supermarket chains.

WEAVING LEGENDS INTO REALITY
Two electronics apprentices came up with a new story for Schwyz, the capital of the
homonymous canton. They created the Trail of Schwyz Legends, a circular path along
legendary sites – with the smartphone guiding the way.

In 2013, as part of the general education
element of their apprenticeship curriculum, Pascal Haas and Michael Steiner had
to write a paper. They quickly found a
common topic from their childhood past
– legends. “My parents used to tell me
these legends,” Pascal Haas remembers.
He says he was particularly fascinated by
the more gruesome ones. The two apprentices decided that they wanted to combine
old lore with modern technology.
CREATING THEIR OWN WEBSITE
They charted the circular path through
the village of Schwyz along 12 original
sites that play a part in the local legends
collected by author Hans Steinegger. “Of
course we also walked the trail,” says Pascal Haas, who like Michael Steiner loves
to hike in his spare time. But it was intellectual fitness that was most in demand
when it came to creating and realizing
their own website (sagen.pascalhaas.ch).
Users were to get a first impression of the
trail from a richly illustrated online version. But the website would also have to
lead to the actual sites via smartphone,
and inform people on site. It proved to be
a tremendous technical challenge for the
two apprentices. “We sure had to negotiate quite a few hurdles,” says Pascal Haas.
But they are convinced that the effort was
well worth it.
Pascal Haas now studies in Lucerne and
Michael Steiner works as an industrial
electrician. The two 21-year-olds believe
that the Trail of Legends is equally healthy
for mind and body: “People will know a lot
more about Schwyz and its history while
at the same time doing something for their
fitness and getting fresh air.”

OTHMAR SCHOECK FESTIVAL Brunnen
commemorates the 130th birthday
of Othmar Schoeck and the 175th birthday of his artist father, Alfred Schoeck.

One of Switzerland’s most important and most prolific composers hails from
Brunnen: Othmar Schoeck. The powerful landscape of the Schwyz region inspired
him throughout his life.
Othmar Schoeck (1886 –1957) grew up in
Brunnen as one of four sons of Alfred
Schoeck, a landscape painter, and Agathe
Schoeck-Fassbind, a hotelier’s daughter.
At first he wanted to become a painter like
his father. But then he enrolled at the Zurich Conservatory, studied with Max Reger in Leipzig and went on to become one
of the most significant Swiss composers.
Othmar Schoeck wrote several hundred
songs and song cycles, more than a hundred orchestral and chamber music compositions as well as eight operas, among
them the well-known “Penthesilea”.
Internationally recognized, he won numerous awards and his music still is performed the world over. In fact, his oeuvre
is enjoying something of a renaissance
right now.

Although Othmar Schoeck spent most of
his working life in Zurich and St. Gallen,
Brunnen and the central Swiss landscapes remained his spiritual refuge and
a major source of inspiration and reinvigoration. In his parental home, the villa
near Hotel Eden, one still finds the pianoforte at which he spent whole nights composing – or which in summer he had
moved to the woods behind the house for
his ultimate inspiration.

Hiking and cycling
For centuries pilgrims have travelled
the Way of St James across the Etzel
mountain pass to Einsiedeln and on
to the Alpthal valley. No coincidence
then that the varied landscape is
also a favourite destination for hikers and cyclists.
Since the spring of 2015, Einsiedeln
is also a stop on the popular Herzroute (Heart Route). You can rent
e-bikes and other sports equipment,
and upon request, sporty locals will
gladly act as your group tour guides.

Sihlsee
Nestled in a magnificent mountain
panorama, the Sihlsee (or Lake Sihl)
is Switzerland’s largest artificial lake

25 years of Swiss Path
In 1991, the Swiss cantons built the
Swiss Path in celebration of 700
years of Swiss Confederacy. The
34.85-kilometre path extends from
the Rütli meadow via Seelisberg and
Flüelen to Brunnen, along the wildly
romantic Urnersee arm of Lake Lucerne. Each Swiss citizen symboli-
cally owns 5 millimetres of it. This
summer marks the path’s 25 anniversary and various events will commemorate it.
Newly opened: Waldstätter Trail
The 110-kilometre Waldstätter Trail
is a cultural route with plenty of
tourist and agricultural history. It
takes you from Brunnen via Lucerne
to the Rütli meadow in 7 day-long
stages. It basically follows the shore
line, incorporating waterfront promenades, mountain trails, urban prom
enades as well as historic paths such
as the rock trail of Bürgenstock
mountain.

Tailor the hike around Lake Lucerne
to your personal tastes. You can
shorten it by taking the Postauto
(bus) for some segments or enrich it
with a boat trip to your next destination.

The permanent exhibition “Switzerland in the Making” focuses on the
foundation of the Swiss confederacy

The oldest artisanal distillery in Switzerland
The Fassbind distillery in Oberarth
is the oldest artisanal distillery
in Switzerland. Oberarth lies in a
valley between the Rossberg and
Rigi mountains, framed by the
lakes of Zug and Lauerz. It was
here, in 1846, that Gottfried Fassbind I, a descendant of Dutch
coopers who migrated to Switzerland in the 13th century, established the “Alte Urschwyzer
Brennerei”.
A mere decade later, at the Paris
World Fair in 1856, Napoleon III
awarded the gold medal to Fassbind’s kirsch. Already the earliest
forebears of the Fassbind family,
whose gapless genealogy dates back
to 1395, cultivated cherries and distilled their juices. The family business has since been passed on to
more than five generations. The long
tradition and huge experience in the
art of distilling is reflected in the
high quality of today’s products.
Tradition, coupled with innovation
and a focus on highest quality, is the
secret of the full-bodied taste, the
natural aromas and the purity of the
Fassbind brandies. The raw material
is carefully sorted at the distillery
and processed in traditional fashion.

Centuries-old tradition and experience
The world-famous Swiss pocketknife has a long and exciting history. The Visitor Center in Brunnen
showcases this history as well as
many other tourist and commercial attractions of the Schwyz
region.
VISITOR CENTER
The Visitor Center in Brunnen is a fascinating starting
point for your stay in the Swiss Knife Valley. On 365 m2
you will find plenty of information on the region’s most
exciting destinations, its numerous specialities and its
key commercial enterprises.
Interactive discovery tour
A small cinema will show alternating 10-minute films
about the most beautiful destinations in the Swiss Knife
Valley and about the production of the Victorinox pocketknives.
VICTORINOX MUSEUM
In 1884, Karl Elsener established a cutlery workshop and
by 1891, he was already supplying the Swiss Army with
knives for the soldiers.

Today, the “Swiss Army Knife” is internationally patented and epitomizes more than any other product the
world-famous “Swiss made” brand. Discover the capti-
vating history of the Swiss Army Knife in the unique
Victorinox Museum.
VICTORINOX BRAND STORE
An exclusive Victorinox Brand Store in the home region
of the Swiss Army Knife complements similar stores in
Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Apart from pocketknives and cutlery, the product line also includes timepieces, travel equipment, fashion and fragrances.

Combine your visit with an excursion
A visit takes about 1 to 1.5 hours and can be ideally
combined with a stroll through Brunnen, a lake cruise
or an excursion into the region. The Visitor Center is
located at Bahnhofstrasse 3 in Brunnen, 100 m from
the jetty and 500 m from the train station. Metered
parking nearby.

TIP
You can assemble the Spartan, probably the best-known Victorinox
pocketknife, at the Visitor Center.
The model was developed by the
founder of Victorinox, Karl Elsener,
and patented on 12 June 1897. It has
since served as the standard model
for the range of officer’s knives. The
assembly involves 27 individual
parts and careful handling. If you are
successful, you may even engrave
your pocketknife for a personal oneof-a-kind.

Public tours
From May to October, each Monday
from 10:30 to 12:00 h, we conduct
public tours in German. You will
learn many interesting facts about
the Victorinox company, the Swiss
Army Knife and the region’s various attractions. Each participant
will receive a small Victorinox knife
(Signature model) after the tour.
One of the participants will get a
chance, against a surcharge, to assemble his or her own pocketknife.
