PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
Dear Students, Families & Friends of Saratoga Music!
Happy Summer! The rains finally ended!
Thankfully the clouds parted for a while back in May
to give us a beautiful day for our Pancake Breakfast.
THANKS to the leadership of Karen Burley & Sharon
Heimbaugh the day went off without a hitch. It was
a happy day of sunshine and music and community
with over 1,300 people in attendance! Our thanks
to the many, many volunteers who spent their
Sunday pouring coffee, selling tickets, cleaning up
and a million other jobs. The students gave terrific
performances and everyone had a wonderful time.
There were more great student performances at the year-end concerts.
A big THANK YOU goes to our directors Mike Boitz, Duane Otani,
Jim Yowell, Vicki Wyant and Jon Jow, for your dedication to our students. The
Saratoga Music Program is vibrant and strong due to your leadership. We are
fortunate to have such talented and hardworking teachers.
Sadly, we need to say a few goodbyes. Ryan Masterson has done a
wonderful job coaching the SHS marching band drum line. He has inspired
the drummers with his energy and his enthusiasm and he will be missed. We
wish him success in performing with the Big Party Orchestra.
Duane Otani
Otani, our wonderful SHS band director, will also be leaving for a rare
opportunity in Southern California. The SHS band had a most successful year
and we thank Duane for his leadership. We barely got to know him, but he will
definitely be missed. We also wish him the best and hope our paths will cross again.
Wonderfully, we have just found a new band director,, Seth Jones
Jones,, who will be
moving here all the way from New Jersey this summer to take up the helm this fall!
And hearty CONGRATULATIONS TO VICKI WYANT, our Redwood
Music Director on her retirement after teaching music for 48 years! We
are grateful to Vicki for building so much of the Saratoga music program.
She has led the Redwood Marching Band from its start 16 years ago all the
way to the Obama inaugural parade. We know she will always be part of
the SMB family. Parents and students attended our retirement reception
where Mrs. Wyant received an official commendation from Saratoga City
Council Member Jill Hunter (the inscription is on page 2 of this newsletter).
THANK YOU to Wendy Chang, Kathy Fetsch, Lillian Fukuda and all the
volunteers who helped set up this lovely event.
MORE THANKS to our many volunteers. It has been a most successful year
for the Saratoga music community. The many hours that our parents donate
are impressive. The hard work is amazing, but the most wonderful aspect of the
Saratoga Music Boosters is the feeling of fun and camaraderie in everything that we
do. Thank you so much! Have a fun and relaxing summer!

THANK YOU
FOR MAKING PANCAKE BREAKFAST
EAKFAST
A HUGE SUCCESS!
Mother Nature came through with sunshine and warmth on the first Sunday in May,
which helped make our annual Pancake Breakfast a great success for the Saratoga Music
Boosters, generating over $24,000 in profit! The Pancake Breakfast is the convergence of
food, music, visual performance, and fundraising to support SMB in 2010-2011. A great big
THANK YOU to the 160+ adult volunteers and numerous music students who arrived at
6 a.m. Sunday and throughout the morning to set up the venue, prepare the food, staff our
Silent Auction and Raffle effort, and clean-up at the end. Your hard work is much appreciated!
The music performances in the high school quad and in the library were fantastic, and it was
great to get all of the guard and dance groups out there to entertain us with their talents
along with the various instrumental and choral groups.
The Raffle was a huge success, as ticket purchasers vied for an Apple iPad, and iPod, and
an Amazon Kindle. The winners were thrilled when their names were called. The Silent
Auction had 95 items, the most ever, with plenty of variety from spa treatments, restaurant
gift certificates, an iPod, a horseback riding lesson, cake-of-the-month, ski weekends, music
lessons, a photography sitting, sushi-making demo and dinner, and even a helicopter ride!
Thank you again to the many volunteers who made the Pancake Breakfast such a great
community-building and fun event.

N tes from . . .
It has been quite a season with Redwood and
SUSD music! To round out the end of the year, we
began with our annual SMB Pancake Breakfast
fundraiser at the beginning of May. How great
it was to see all of our groups perform in one
morning and under such perfect weather!
Thank you to all of our volunteers, donors, and
supporters who made this event such a success.
We couldn’t have done it without you! One
week later, the Redwood Honor Chorus also
performed at the annual CMEA Choral Festival
on Saturday, May 8 and had a very successful
and enriching experience. Special thanks goes
to the SHS choral department an volunteers for
hosting such a amazing event.
Finally, Redwood and SUSD came together one
last time for our Spring Pops Concert series
at the beginning of June. If you were able to
see all three concerts, you will have noticed
the leaps and bounds of improvement that
each group has made since the beginning of
the school year. We are so incredibly proud
of our students and their accomplishments!
Specific accolades go to our beginning band
and orchestra. You have all done a stupendous
job this year and we are so proud to have you
as a part of our music team! The tradition of
music excellence continues to go strong and
lives on in you! Thank you to all of our students
for all of your hard work, and to the parents
who drive our musicians to class at any and
every part of the day! Please be on the lookout
for announcements for the start of band and
orchestra at the beginning of next school year.
We look forward to having you back!
In addition to the concerts, students also
received peer-voted awards for each group
to recognize the hard work and dedication of
some students. While not all students were
recognized, we hope that your experiences in
your groups, the opportunities to work together
as an ensemble, learn together as a team, and
perform together as a family was an ultimate
rewarding experience of your school year.
One notable set of Awards are the SMB music
scholarships that are given to select graduating
8th graders of each main music group who plan
on continuing their music education in high
school. Special congratulations goes out to
the following students as our 2010 scholarship
recipients:
Rowland Schwab Band Scholarships
Tim Casey-Clyde, Woodwinds
Lauren Casey-Clyde, Brass
Jeremy Stutchman, Percussion
Allen Family String Scholarships
Casper Chen
Clara McMahon

the Redwood and SUSD Elementary Music Departments
Of course, behind every great student is
a great teacher, and we are so thankful
to have a collective of outstanding
specialists for each of our groups. It is
our students who make the music, but
it is due to the collaboration with our
instructors that our program exists at
such a high caliber of proficiency. Thank
you to Mrs. Dugan and Mrs. Sutterfield
(5th Grade Band, Redwood Woodwind
& Brass Ensembles), Mr. and Mrs.
Krijnen (String Orchestras), Ms. Green
(Color Guard & Dance), Mr. Taniguchi
(Jazz Band), Mrs. Camphouse (Redwood
Woodwind Ensembles), and Mr. Frank
Wyant (Percussion). We appreciate
all of the thoughtful and hard work in Color guard routine choreographed by Ms. Katherine Green
everything that you do!
As we close another school year, we look ahead to another. Please help us by encouraging your friends
and neighbors to get involved in music! We are always looking for new students and families to become a
part of the music program. In these challenging financial times, your good words and efforts of advocacy
are also incredibly appreciated. Music and the arts are so vital to all students’ education, and the more
students that we are able to get involved, the better we are able to serve our student population and
educate better leaders for the future.
Keep practicing! As with any physical skill, music must be practiced consistently or skills can be lost. Please
encourage your student to keep practicing, playing, and performing throughout the Summer. This may be
in the form of private lessons or by joining Redwood
Summer Music from June 21 to July 16 (weekdays
from 1:00-3:15PM). Students may keep up their
current skills, learn a new instrument or technique,
and continue maintaining that positive creative
outlet. Keep in mind that Redwood Marching Band
starts our season with Band Camp during the week of
August 16-20. All 7th and 8th grade band musicians
should plan on joining us during this very important
week. If you are in 6th-8th grade next year and are
interested in joining the Redwood Color Guard and
Dance team, you should also join us for that week of

Dear SMB Parents and Students,
How can I ever Thank You for the lovely retirement reception SMB gave
me on Tuesday, June 8th? The food, the flowers, the presentations, but most
of all the wonderful parents, students, teachers, administrators, family
and friends that were there really touched my heart. I have had a very
blessed 27-year music career here in the Saratoga District. Altogether, I
have taught music for 48 years and have loved sharing my passion with so
many students and families. I will continue to be involved in our Saratoga
Community in many ways in the future and will look forward to seeing
parents and students as they share their future musical and life experiences
with me. Have a wonderful summer and I will be seeing you in the fall.
Thanks again for another wonderful memory.
Musically Yours,

Instrumental Music Director’s Report
Michael Boitz
Duane Otani
Greetings from the SHS Instrumental
Music Department!
As the year winds down, I find myself
reflecting on how proud I am of the
2010 graduating senior class.
These
students have been dedicated members
of Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz
Bands, Symphonic Band, String Orchestra,
Symphony Orchestra, Pit Orchestra’s,
CMEA S/E Participants, SCCBDA
Members, All-State Members, and involved
with a flurry of all other school and outside
activities. BRAVO, class of 2010!
THANK YOU SMB Board!
I can’t believe that the school year is over. It
has definitely been one of the greatest years
in my teaching career. By now you probably
know that I will not be returning to Saratoga
High School next year. I have accepted a
position at Rancho Bernardo High School
which is located about 15 miles north of
the city of San Diego. I will be taking over
for their band director who will be retiring
after 30+ years of service with their school
district. It will be big shoes to fill but a great
challenge for me professionally.
Rest assured that I have done everything
possible to make sure that all of the details for
next year are set in place so that the program
will not miss a beat. All staff members will
be remaining on board to make sure that
the marching band carries on successfully.
After a very exciting design meeting, I know
that you will love all the things that we have
been planned for the 2010 field show called
Thoughtcrime.I
have also created an
entirely new set of pep
tunes that the marching
band will debut in the fall.
It’s going to be a great season!
I cannot thank you all enough for the
amazing experiences that you have given
me. Everyone has been wonderful to
work with and I will truly miss the amazing
“band family” that exists in the Saratoga
community. There will be so many things
that I will miss about Saratoga but I am
confident that the tradition of success will
continue for many years to come. Thank
you again for allowing me the honor of
serving as your band director.
Musically Yours,
I would like to send personal thanks to our
stellar Saratoga Music Booster Executive
Board for a great year. Under the leadership

you will find we have done

LEND A HAND! I would again like
to challenge all parents and interested
community members to lend a hand to any
SMB sponsored event in the coming year.
Make this a part of your yearly giving and
yearly volunteer effort. I personally have
really enjoyed getting to know parents
through unified efforts, such as the Jazz
Cabaret, and cherish the moments we have
to spend together. Rather than wait for a
contact, make the effort to contact an SMB
board member to find out how you can
help!
Best Wishes for a wonderful summer!

Saratoga High Choir News
- Jim Yowell
As the year comes to a close I am
reminded of the first few days of
school when I welcomed the new
singers to the program and how
quiet and shy they were when
they first entered the program
and now I am experiencing
their joyful celebration of their
completion of their high school
career. They did not believe in
themselves nor did they know
what was in store for their
future. I want to encourage
those seniors and their parents
who have so faithfully served in
the choral program to keep your head up and realize they have the world ahead of them. They
have the ability to meet the future with great success because they have worked so hard here
in support of something that was at first intangible to describe. They made beautiful music
together and shared that love of music with others. That is the greatest gift and accomplishment
few students and families will ever experience. Thank you for letting me have that experience
of the magic of music with you. Please come back and share your lives whenever you can.
Thank you to the two faithful 2009-2010 SMB choir liaisons, Mary Murphy and Ashima Shankar for
your tireless behind the scenes work to make every choir event go so smoothly. I want to thank
Ashima for her gracious help to serve on one more year and welcome May-Jane Chuang and Laurie
Shimizu who will work together as a team of three to represent the choir parents on the SMB board.
They will be contacting you throughout the school year for your help at various music events and I
strongly encourage you to respond positively to their call.
Thank you SMB for your continued financial support of the choral music department. At our end of the
year meeting SMB graciously approved to add $5,000 to be put into the new piano for the choir room
fund. In the fall, September 25th, back by popular demand we will have another “Poker Night” and
the proceeds will go towards our goal of purchasing a new Yamaha C-6 piano for the choir room.

Wonderful Community Spirit and Fantastic Volunteers
Made 2009/10 Fundraisers a Success!
Our SMB fundraising activities for 2009 - 2010 were once again very
successful, both financially and in the community spirit they exhibited.
We kicked off the year with Cookie Dough sales. Co-chairs Virginia
McPherson and Jennie Lau and their team of volunteers ensured that
all ran smoothly and plenty of sweet treats made their way to freezers
and then dessert plates in Saratoga and beyond. Many thanks to
Virginia and Jennie and their Cookie Dough team.
Jazz Cabaret in March was led by co-chairs Julie Galvin and Judy Levin
and a large committee of tireless volunteers. They transformed the SHS
gym into a hip jazz club and paid attention to every detail. It was a
lively evening of great entertainment, dancing and good food and drink.
Thank you to Julie and Judy and their hard-working committee.
Our final fundraising event of the year was Pancake Breakfast.
Co-chairs Karen Burley and Sharon Heimbaugh and a host of
volunteers worked very hard on this much-anticipated community
event. We were blessed with a beautiful Spring day, wonderful student
performances and a hearty breakfast. We thank Karen and Sharon and
their committee for another successful event.
The SMB community comprises an amazing group of volunteers. It
seems that no job goes unfilled and people step up with enthusiasm
and a ‘can-do’ attitude that ensures all of our events are successful
and fun. Even when the stress levels are rising and people are working
incredibly hard, there are still plenty of smiles. All that work is rewarded
by the support and commitment from the Saratoga community. We are
grateful for the unfailing support of so many local businesses, individuals
and families; thanks to them SMB can continue to support the many
music programs that are so important to our students. THANK YOU!

Saratoga High Choir News (continued)
I mentioned the transformation of students and want
to recognize Thomas Head
who received this year’s SMB
Scholarship representing the
Choral Department. He
is a great example of how
one young man can enter
a program doubting his
abilities and leaving with a
spirit of confidence and with
a great song in his heart. He
represents our program well.
During the month of
June everyone in the
choir program received
their “2010-2011 Choir
Informational Packet”.
Please take the time to
respond as soon as you
receive the packet to
complete all the forms that
are included.
Next year promises to be full
of fun and exciting events.
Please use the “Choral
Department Calendar of
Performances and Events”
to reserve space within
your own family calendar
so you can attend all the
performances. Plan ahead
now to avoid any conflicts.
I am excited to draw your
attention to a few important
events that take place in
the fall. The choir retreat
in September, the students
preparation for Regional
Honor Choir auditions, the
annual fall shared concert
with Redwood are just a few
events to take notice.
Use the enclosed form within
your “Choir Informational
Packet” to sign up to help at
Summer 2010
one or more of the choral
events taking place during
the year. Maybe you would
like to chaperone at the Fall
Retreat or our annual trip to
San Francisco and our mini
tour in the spring, how about
flip pancakes at the Pancake
breakfast or decorate the
gym for Jazz Cabaret? There
are so many ways you can
join in the fun.
If you are new to the
program please take the
time to contact me to set
up a “fitting appointment”
for your dress or tux. The
fitting takes between 5-10
minutes. The fitting dates
are: June 28 – July 2 and July
28 – July 30. Email or call for
an appointment time that is
convenient for you.
Don’t hesitate to contact
me over the summer
by
either
email
at
[email protected]
or by phone at 867-3411
ext. 214 if you have any
questions. I’ll be in my office
throughout the summer and
will get your message.
Finally, there is no limit to
how many students are in
choir. Keep spreading the
word and get your friends in
choir too. Don’t take no for
an answer, you are the best
example of what choir can
do for a person. It is never
too late to sign up.
Great things have taken
place and more are to come!
~Jim Yowell
On behalf of the SHS Color Guard and Winter Guard, a warm thank you to the
SMB for your tremendous support this year. Thank you to Mr. Boitz and Mr.
Otani for paving the way for a memorable season. Thank you to Tony Crapo
and Katherine Green for your enthusiasm and commitment. You made the
hard work fun! Thank you to our chaperones: Sharon Shyu, Paul & Monica
Sakamoto, Al Davis, Tom Hall, Lisa Cummins, Mary and Jim Hollenhorst,
Debbie Jensen, Kai Wong, and Ed Liu for devoting your day, sometimes
days, to our teams. Thank you to Marguerite McAfee for transporting our
props and enduring a flat tire on the way to Fresno! Thank you to our team
captains: Vicki Ni, Jenna Liddie, and Christine Lee. You are awesome captains!
We will miss you next year. Thank you to all you parents for your behind the
scenes dedication to our team. Thank you to everyone.
Together, our efforts contributed to an unforgettable season.
We look forward to our next season together!
Now, we are looking forward to our upcoming Color Guard season, on
the field with the award-winning SHS Marching Band. We encourage new
interested students join the team and become part of the excitement! You
can contact Michael Boitz or Tony Crapo for more information. Practices
begin July 5 in the SHS gym. See you then!
