behalf of their students by using their Teacher Login, by clicking on
‘Start Reading’ you will enter the Student Gateway. Each Student

What is ABC Reading Eggs?
ABC Reading Eggs is an online reading program that makes learning essential reading skills a fun and
motivating experience for 3–7 year olds.
The program can help a wide range of students to become proficient readers. The diagnostic test and
student management tools enable teachers to place students at different reading levels within the
program.
Using ABC Reading Eggs in the Classroom
Students can use ABC Reading Eggs at school and at home. Use ABC Reading Eggs at school and set
it for homework too. ABC Reading Eggs is homework students will want to do!
Reception/Kindergarten
The program begins at an absolute emergent reading level, focusing on letter sounds, first sight words and
reading simple sentences. The site is simple to navigate and students are motivated to complete lessons. Use
the colourful lessons with groups or the whole class (on the IWB or computer) as lesson starters that really focus
your students’ attention.
Year 1
Students can take a placement test to ensure that they are working at a level that matches their reading ability,
or teachers can move students to an appropriate reading level. The program can ensure all your students make
progress, as it covers a wide range of phonic skills, essential sight words and comprehension skills in a highly
motivating way. Reluctant readers love ABC Reading Eggs.
Year 2
Many features of ABC Reading Eggs are excellent for Year 2 students. Make the Story Factory part of your writing
program; with its weekly contests, it’s a great way to get kids writing. The new Skills Bank focuses on Spelling,
Grammar and Vocabulary development. Even your struggling readers can make real progress at ABC Reading
Eggs.
Support Teacher
Many struggling and reluctant readers really enjoy working on a computer, as it allows them to progress at their
own pace. The ABC Reading Eggs lessons provide plenty of practice in developing key reading skills and the
interesting activities can be repeated as often as needed.
Special Educational Needs
ABC Reading Eggs is used in many special needs classrooms. The bright graphics and repetition work well with
a wide range of students. The songs and fun activities make ABC Reading Eggs a rewarding activity, where
students experience success and learn key reading skills.

The ABC Reading Eggs Lessons
There are 12 maps with a total of 120 lessons.
Each lesson has between 6 to 10 parts.
Step 1 – Starting Out in the Zoo
Lessons 1–40
This first step is aimed at 4-6 year olds who have little or
no reading skills. This is where all students can begin to
learn to read. By completing the 40 lessons in the Starting
Out set, students will learn their first reading skills. This
includes learning the sounds and names of the alphabet
letters, reading their first sight words, such as the, I, and,
is and see. They will also learn the essential phonic skills
needed to read three letter words such as cat, fan and
Sam. Students will then be able to read their first simple
stories featuring Sam the ant.
Step 2 – Beginning to Read in the Playgr Zoo
Lessons 41-80
The next step builds on skills learnt in Step 1 with a
focus on short vowel words such as cat, dog, ten, fish
and duck, and on building reading skills. Students will
learn many more high frequency sight words, build
word families and read another 40 books. Some of
these books are nonfiction titles with a focus on building
vocabulary in these areas – colours, numbers, facial
features and pets.
Step 3 – Building Confidence at the Theme Park
Lessons 81-120
The third step covers long vowel words such as cake,
kite, rain, cook, seat and cute. These new phonic patterns
are introduced and reinforced so that students can
read them fluently and spell them correctly. There is an
increased focus on reading for meaning, comprehension
and understanding longer words and sentences.

How does an ABC Reading Eggs
lesson work?
Once you have set up an account for your students, each student will land on a map. The map makes
it easy for emergent readers to navigate the site. Each of the numbered stepping stones represents a
lesson.
Parts 1 and 2 The main lesson
Part 5 Vocabulary
The main lessons appear as a series of interactive
Flash animations, led by our host/ teacher, Sam the
Ant, or another character. He models each concept.
The student needs to get seven correct responses to
progress to the next part of the lesson.
This vocabulary building activity ensures that
students know the words used in the reading books.
Part 6 The e-book
Part 3 Dot-to-dot
The dot-to-dot activities are a fun way for students to
learn correct letter formation.
Part 4 Letter recognition
This activity builds recognition of both upper- and
lower-case letters.
This is an electronic book, with audio support, that
students can read online. Printed versions of these
books are also available.
Part 7 The egg hatches!
The student is rewarded for completing the lesson
with a new creature that hatches and becomes part
of their online collection.

This suggested lesson plan is a quick guide to help you successfully launch Reading Eggs &
Eggspress with your class. Each student must be added to the program and have their login
details prior to launch. Each computer requires speakers or headphones. Typically, lessons run for
45-60 minutes. Let’s start by going to www.readingeggs.com
Before your students log in: Make sure you make an informed decision as to whether your

Driving Tests
Tests
Tests to assess basic skills knowledge. When students get enough questions correct, they are rewarded with a
racing car game. These tests will motivate your students to stay on track as they improve their skills.
Sight Words, Phonic Skills and Content-Area Vocabulary
Sight word knowledge and phonic skills are fundamental parts of any early literacy program. The first 200 highfrequency sight words make up almost 65% of the words that appear in most texts.
The Story Factory
This is where Eggsplorers create their very own story books with full-colour illustrations. Each child’s story books are
saved in the bookshelf in their Eggsplorer’s house.
Enter stories into the weekly contest to win 200 Golden Eggs. Every week, the top stories are shortlisted and go
on display in the Story Factory Showroom. Eggsplorers read and rate the top stories to help choose the winner.
Winners are announced every Friday.
Children love to read their own stories and The Story Factory is a wonderful way to build a love of both reading and
writing.

Program Features
Spelling
The Spelling Vault contains 96 carefully graded
spelling lessons. Each spelling lesson focuses on
a 12-word spelling list with a variety of spelling
strategies including word structure, word families,
meaning, segmentation, morphemes, phonics and
repetition to build students’ word knowledge and
spelling recall. Lessons end with a spelling test.
Students’ results are collated into individual and
class reports.
Printable worksheets complement the online
lessons. Teachers can use the lessons and
worksheets as part of their spelling program.
Assessment and reporting
All student results are recorded in the teacher
centre including test results and lessons
completed. Teachers can access a complete scope
and sequence of content covered, word lists and
skills charts.
Puzzle Park
32 brain-stretching puzzles that reinforce a variety of literacy skills including comprehension, sight word
knowledge, vocabulary development, following directions and problem solving.

The Teacher Resources are split up into Comprehension, Grammar, Phonics and Spelling, Writing
and Hand Writing, covering K – 7. Within these resources are a range of teacher lesson plans, IWB
resources, interactive lesson ideas, PowerPoint lessons, teacher notes and student worksheets. See

2. Match students to text: Reading materials need to match students’ reading ability and interests.

using a range of comprehension strategies.
4. Motivation: Students are motivated to keep reading and learning.

The student navigation menu shows the various places students can visit within ABC Reading
Eggspress. ABC Reading Eggspress keeps students motivated by rewarding them along their journey.
Children can see which lesson they are up to, how many targets they have hit and check how many
golden eggs they have in their Eggy Bank.
Floating Island
When a student logs into ABC Reading Eggspress, they land on the spinning map. From here they can go to all
their ABC Reading Eggspress destinations. The ABC Reading Eggspress site is divided into 4 areas – Learning,
Fun, Live Competition and Rewards. The floating island is divided into 4 quadrants with arrow on each edge;
click onto the arrow to spin the map around to the next quadrant. The map’s default position is the Learning
Quadrant.

The Reading Eggspress Library has more than 1,700
e-books, including illustrated chapter books, full colour
nonfiction books and a range of classics. Search for
books by topic, series, author, reading age or book title.
New books are added regularly with audio available for
all lower level books. All eBooks are available for use
with PC’s, IWB’s and tablet devices.
Library Book Features
• Wide range of levelled fiction and nonfiction titles.
• Online reading quiz included for every title.
• Downloadable teaching notes and student worksheets
for all titles.
• Children can ‘fave’ a book, bookmark where they are
up to and rate each book. When students first choose
a book, they will see the number of people who have
read the book and its rating.

The Stadium

Writing Fun by Jenny Eather
Located within the Writing Press, Writing Fun is designed to assist
students to write a wide variety of genres. It features Text Organizers,
for 14 text types, which explain the purpose, structure and language
features. Also included are typical examples of student’s writing at six
different ability levels.

The Comprehension Gym
Over 200 interactive comprehension lessons graded over
five broad levels from grade 2 to grade 6: 40 lessons per
year level. The Comprehension Gym placement test places
students at the correct level.
Enter the gym and play the Daily Game as a mental warm-up.
10 Lessons per Step
• Each level has 10 lessons with 5 fiction and 5 nonfiction
extracts from a broad range of levelled books.
• Students can choose any of the 10 lessons to work through.
Comprehension Lessons
Each Comprehension Gym lesson includes pre-reading activities that model and teach comprehension
strategies and the reading extract followed by a set of comprehension questions which assess a student’s
factual, inferential and textual understandings of the text.
Comprehension Reports
Each of the 16 quiz questions assesses a specific comprehension skill or strategy. Teacher reports provide details
about each student’s progress in using a wide range of comprehension strategies.

Assign Work gives teachers additional control over content and greater reporting capabilities. This feature
allows teachers to:
• Assign Reading Eggspress lessons & books to individual
students, multiple students or their entire class. All assignments
need to be completed before students can continue with other
Reading Eggspress activities;
• Assign Reading Eggspress lessons & books for a specified
period, so that the assignments start & end on dates specified
by the teacher.

Spelling Activities:
• Buzzy Words: Interactive IWB resource with 8 word
lists to choose from.
• Making words: An interactive activity that
works well with the Skills Bank spelling lists and
lessons. Teachers can choose a level from Ants
to Leopards. Within each level there are 8 lists
to choose from, each list includes 7 letters. From
these, you and your students will be able to make
some, but not all of the words from the matching
spelling lesson. Teacher notes are available in the
student worksheet section for each list.
• Sorting words: Choose a difficulty level from 1 – 10,
then choose two word groups from a selection of
16. The program will then generate 6-8 words with
those groups and the class will need to sort them
into their correct category.

Targeting Comprehension
Targeting Comprehension Interactively is a powerful
tool for teaching comprehension using an interactive
whiteboard. The program features ten colourful and
engaging text extracts in a variety of genres with an
audio track for Lower Primary; Middle Primary; and
Upper Primary.
Each text is examined in stages using the following six
strategies:
• Predicting: Students are asked questions about
the book’s title, cover or graphics and asked to

The Targeting English series of Student Books,

Targeting Handwriting
K-2 Teaching Resource
The Targeting Handwriting Interactively program contains all the tools schools will need to teach their states’
handwriting using an interactive whiteboard. Each handwriting movement is animated on screen and
supported by activities to assist students with their letter formation and fluency
The program is divided into five simple menus:
1. Basic Letter menu — downstroke patterns, hopping patterns, wave patterns and numerals.
2.Exits and Entries menu — exits, rounded entries, pointed entries, letters that change.
3.Joining menu — diagonal joins, drop-on joins, horizontal joins, up-sweeping joins, letters that don’t join.
4.Pencil grip and paper position menu — animated demonstrations.
5.Work sheet menu — practice pages for numerals and each letter’s plain script, exits and entries and joining.
There are ample opportunities for students to practise letters on the interactive whiteboard as well as
demonstrating a perfect model of the script and each letter’s formation. Audio instructions are included for each
letter as well as fun pictures and activities to reinforce letter recognition skills. Also includes Build your own work
sheet tools.
Teachers can create their own worksheets within the worksheet menu using their own text or numbers. These
worksheets can then be printed for students to work on. This is a huge time saver for teachers as it eliminates
the need to search for relevant worksheets!

Home Access
Children love the Reading Eggs lessons and benefit from repeated lessons and exploring the site. To get more
time on-task, and to get the most out of Reading Eggs, it’s great to have children use the program at home as
well. It’s also an excellent Home-School link that gets parents actively involved in their children’s education.
For home access for each students, simply follow these steps:
1. Click on Manage Class in the side panel
2.Click on Parent Letters
3.Print and hand out to parents

Subscription Coordinator Tool
The Subscription Coordinator tool is a simple way to organize teacher
and student information.
This tool allows you to assign one teacher to be the dedicated
Subscription Coordinator.
The Subscription Coordinator can organize your school’s Reading Eggs
account by performing the following functions:
• View, edit and delete all teacher accounts
• Invite teachers to join your school’s subscription
• View, edit, add, delete and deactivate all student accounts
• Move students to different classes
• View class and student progress reports
• Print student user name and password details
• Reset student passwords individually and for a whole class
To access the Subscription Coordinator Tool, you will need to ensure you have an existing teacher account on
Reading Eggs.
New Subscription Coordinator
1. Login to your account as normal. When there is no set Subscription Coordinator a message will appear in
a blue banner at the top of home page, informing you that no subscription coordinator has been allocated.
Click on Sign Up.
2.Click on Sign up as a subscription coordinator, ensure your contact details are correct, and save changes.
OR Existing Subscription Coordinator
If your school already has a Subscription Coordinator you will have no access to proceed. It will inform you of the
Subscription Coordinator for your school, providing the option to email them.

Add teachers to your school

Click ‘Manage Teachers’ from the left menu panel.

Click ‘Add Teacher’ and enter the new teacher’s details. Their email address will become their
username and they will receive an email that contains their login details.

Select the teacher(s) you would like to delete using the checkbox to the left.

Click ‘Delete’ to permanently remove the teacher(s) from your school account.

Reset a teacher password

Select the teacher(s) that require their password to be reset using the checkbox on the left.

Click ‘Send password email’. This will send an email to the teacher with details of how to reset
their password.
In order to ensure your teachers receive the
password reset email, they must have a valid
email address registered with their teacher
account.
If you need to update a teacher’s email address,
refer to the Edit Teacher Details guide.

Locate the teacher by typing their name in the search box or by browsing through your teacher
list.

Hover your mouse over the teacher whose details you would like to edit and click the ‘Edit’ button
that appears on the right.

Edit the student’s details and click ‘Update Teacher’.

Print out Parent letters

Select the teachers you would like to print out parent letters for and click on Parent Letters. An
email will be sent to the relevant teachers containing the parent letters.

Add students to a class

Click ‘Where do I ADD STUDENTS?’ at the top-right of the screen to go to the Add Students
section. Under the heading ‘Add students to your class’, enter the student’s name and select
their teacher.
If a student with the same name already exists at
the school, be sure to enter a slightly different name,
(perhaps with their middle initial or a number)
so that you can differentiate between duplicate
student accounts.
I.e enter Peter A. Smith or Peter Smith2

Locate the student by typing their name in the search box or selecting them from the list.

To temporarily remove students from a class: Select the student(s) by ticking the box next to their
name(s) and click ‘Remove from class’.

To permanently remove students from a class, select the student(s) by ticking the box next to
their name(s) and click ‘Delete’.
If you remove a student from a class accidentally,
go to the Move Students into a class from
School Admin guide to find out how to move
them back into their class.
Unfortunately, students who have been deleted
from their class cannot be retrieved.

Click ‘Move students’.

Select the student(s) you would like to move and click ‘Move into class’.

Select the destination class and click ‘Move into class’.

Find the student by typing their name in the search box or by browsing through your school roll.

Hover your mouse over the student whose details you would like to edit and click the ‘Edit’ button
that appears on the right.

Edit the student’s details and click ‘Update Student’.

To manually move students to a higher or lower lesson for reading, spelling or comprehension,
click on ‘Student Progress’ and choose Reading Eggs or Reading Eggspress depending on what
the student uses.

Hover over the student until you see the edit button appear on the left hand side. Click to edit
each student’s level.

A pop up will appear within your screen to adjust your student’s progress

To change the progress of all the students, select every student and click on ‘Change Progress’

A pop up will appear within your screen to adjust all student progress in one go. This would be
helpful when you want every student to re-sit a placement test or place all students on the same
lesson.

Setting up your school for the new school year
Please note the following should be completed by your Subscription Coordinator at the start of
Term 1 before your teachers have begun setting up their new classes.
Follow these simple steps...

Go to www.readingeggs.com and sign in with your username and password.

On the left hand navigation panel under Management, click on Manage Rollover.
03
Follow the steps on the screen to begin your rollover.
WARNING: Deleting students in Step 5 of the process should not be completed
until ALL TEACHERS have moved students into their class. We recommended you
hold off on performing Step 5 until you have spoken with all of your teachers to
avoid permanently deleting student accounts.
After the rollover process has been completed, your student’s and teachers can
start using ABC Reading Eggs.

Set your class up for the new school year
Follow these simple steps...

Go to www.readingeggs.com and sign in with your username and password.

On the left hand navigation panel, under Management, click on Manage Class.

Select all your students and click Remove from Class. Clicking this button simply moves your
students from your own class into school admin. This does not delete the student or remove any
of their data.

On the same page click on Move Students into your Class. This is where all the removed
students are located.

Once all your teachers have removed their students from their class, they should appear on the
Student’s without a teacher page, where you can choose students to add to your class.
If you aren’t able to find your students, ensure that their previous teachers have removed them
from their class. Creating new accounts for your students could result in duplication and loss of
student rewards/data.
To make this process simpler for the next year,
you must assign one teacher such as the
Literacy Coordinator to become the Subscription
Coordinator. This contact is able to ensure your
schools subscription to ABC Reading Eggs runs
smoothly.
