A Warm Ventura Visit
I
n anticipation of our daughter’s wedding in September, my husband
and I brought my mother, Lois Kessler, to live with us this past
summer so she could “acclimate” to Ventura, which she always
considered too cold and damp. Suffering from Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease, Mom was provided gentle health checks, wonderful
assistance with hygiene, and my husband and I received helpful advice
from Livingston Hospice, which got us through the sometimes difficult
occurrences that presented out of the blue.
The wedding was wonderful and the entire family was especially
happy Mom could participate. She flew back to Missouri with my brother
after the wedding. Mom passed away very unexpectedly, October 30. She
had continued under Hospice care while in Missouri and my brother was
very complimentary of the Hospice team who attended her.
My husband and I also would like to express our sincere appreciation
to all the Livingston members who helped us while Mom was in Ventura,
with special thanks to Dan Kaplan and Constance Valenzuela. Their
gentle treatment and kind words always put her at ease and she truly
enjoyed her time with them.
Please accept this small donation to the agency, plus our heartfelt
gratitude for the humane and compassionate treatment shown Mother in
her frail state. There are not enough superlatives to describe what you do.

ivingston has many unique relationships throughout
Ventura County. The cities of Oxnard, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, and Westlake Village all
partner with us to provide quality and compassionate home
healthcare for the under and uninsured within those
communities. Ventura County through Tobacco Settlement
funds makes subsidized care from Livingston available
throughout the county.
We are fortunate to work collaboratively with the county’s
volunteer hospices: Camarillo Hospice, Help of Ojai, Hospice
of the Conejo, and Santa Clara Valley Hospice. In these
relationships Livingston provides the medical hospice care and
the local community groups provide the hospice volunteer
services. This ensures that the patient has the best of medical
care with local support.
The importance of local support and connection was what
led us to open an East County branch in Thousand Oaks. Local
nurses serving patients in their own backyard truly embraces
the Livingston family philosophy.
Due to an aging population in need of home health,
hospice, and in-home care, and Livingston’s strong community
ties, we have decided to open a branch office within the City
of Ojai. This office is located in central Ojai on the corner
of Matilija and Canada streets and it will be home for the
Livingston staff that serve Ojai, Oakview, Casitas Springs,
Meiners Oaks and environs. Care to individuals in these
communities has always been a part of our service. In fact, last
year we provided care for almost 400 Ojai area residents. In
addition, readers of this column may remember that Livingston
deepened its relationship with Help of Ojai by assuming
their hospice volunteer program and bringing it under the
Livingston Hospice umbrella.
As with all of our community relationships, in Ojai we
will move forward with the Livingston mission in mind
to recognize the growing need to provide services in the
home environment for the sick, handicapped, elderly and
homebound. And, of course, we will have a ribbon cutting and
opportunities for the Ojai community to meet the Livingston
family. You will be invited!

Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation and Livingston Memorial Visiting
Nurse Association recognize the growing need to provide services in the home
environment for the sick, handicapped, elderly and homebound.
As community-supported, nonprofit organizations, they strive to provide
professional, licensed and supportive home health and hospice care services of the
highest quality in the most cost effective manner to the people of Ventura County to
ensure a positive patient outcome.
LMVNA explores and develops health-related programs based upon community
need and acceptance, economic viability, and availability of resources to provide
services.
LMVNA is sensitive to the financial circumstances of its patients and provides needed
services, including those at reduced or no charge to indigent patients, based upon
the available resources for the organization.
The Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation is the parent organization of Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Livingston CareGivers.
Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association is licensed by the State of California,
certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal, and is accredited by The Joint Commission.
Joint Commission accreditation is regarded as the most
comprehensive review of patient safety and quality efforts
in the industry. Accredited home health organizations have
fewer readmits to the hospital after an episode of care.
Livingston CareGivers is a non-medical provider of in-home assistance and is CAHSAH
certified and not associated with The Joint Commission.
Question: I take many
medications and worry about side
effects. How can I protect myself?
Answer: You are wise to be
concerned because today’s medicines
are complex and powerful. The
average senior takes four to five
prescriptions daily plus many overthe-counter medications—the
potential for problems are real.
Medication-related injuries affect
over 1.5 million people yearly. For
example, one common medication
side effect is lightheadedness which
leads to falling, which can then lead
to injury and even death.
“Medication safety should be
practiced every time you take your
meds,” says Gloria Forgea, RN,
Livingston’s Director of Education.
“Safe use of medications requires upto-date information and you should
know what each medication is for
and when to take it.”
Here are some common myths
about medications:
n The medication will work for
me: The truth is every person is
different and how a medication
performs for one person may not
be the same for another.
n Nonprescription medications are
safer than prescription medicine:
In reality all medications, even
without prescription, have the
potential to cause harm.
n Splitting pills is a good way to
save money: It is true that some
medicines can be safely split, but
others require the pill to remain
intact to work at all.

ivingston’s ability to care for under and uninsured
patients depends upon the generous support from
the community. On October 25th we held our annual
donor appreciation event in Livingston’s new Community
Education Room. The social gathering of Livingston
Distinguished Donors (contributions of $1,000 or more
annually and Livingston Legacy Society members) was
generously underwritten by Rabobank. Signature blue and
white flowers and decorations were provided by Sherry
Scott, and Gail Beltramo contributed to make the invitations
lovely and affordable. No funds intended for patient services
and programs were used.
We could not serve our mission without the support
of donors. All donations ensure that residents of Ventura
County have access to Livingston home healthcare.

Livingston Lights Up Lives
L
ivingston’s Light Up A Life celebrates the warmth and spirit of the
holiday season. Light Up increases awareness and raises crucial
funds, over $50,000 a year, for Livingston Hospice. Donations
ensure that all terminally ill patients living in Ventura County have
access to compassionate care that leads to a better quality of life at the
end of life. The 28th annual event was hosted at the Pacific View Mall in
Ventura with friends, family and holiday shoppers.

f you were offered an opportunity that is safe, offers a higher rate of
return than you can obtain in a CD, gives you an immediate income
tax deduction, provides partially tax-free annual income, protects

A charitable gift annuity is a contract between you and Livingston
that exchanges a gift for secure, fixed payments for your life and for the
life of your spouse or partner. You receive an annual annuity based on
your age at the time you enter into the agreement. You get an immediate
charitable deduction and whatever amount remains at your passing will
benefit Livingston.
A portion of the annual payment you receive is tax free, which
results in a higher effective rate of return when compared to a fully
taxable investment.

$10,000 is the minimum investment amount for a gift annuity.
Gift annuities may be funded with cash or stock. On appreciated
stock some of the capital gains tax is eliminated immediately.
The remainder of the capital gain is prorated over your entire life
expectancy. Whether funded with cash or stock, you are entitled to
an immediate income tax deduction at the time you create the gift
annuity, typically between 25 and 40 percent of the value of the original
contribution.
Once you take out a gift annuity, the amount you receive annually
remains the same for life, regardless of what happens to the economy or
stock market.
For safe keeping, Livingston gift annuities are housed at the Ventura
County Community Foundation and the proceeds are contributed to the
Livingston Endowment.
