When we opened The Kayak Centre in 1995,
we set out to create the kind of environment

ACA Level 2/3 Training & Assessment
The American Canoe Association (ACA) has developed a new skill training and assessment program which covers a
comprehensive curriculum of skills and safety techniques. The Kayak Centre is offering ACA Level 2/3 Training and Assessment
courses geared towards experienced paddlers who are looking to refine their skills. A variety of strokes and maneuvers including
ruddering, landing, low brace turns, deep water rescue and towing are stressed as well as technical knowledge of safety,

The British Canoe Union (BCU) offers comprehensive training and assessment programs for kayakers of all abilities. It is the governing
body for the sport of kayaking in the United Kingdom and is recognized worldwide.
The Kayak Centre is offering BCU 3 Star training which is aimed at those with some experience who are looking to fine tune stroke
technique, rescue skills and leadership skills following the BCU’s comprehensive curriculum. Successful completion of the training

Quick Start
Kayak Surfing - Long Boats
Whether you are a “newbie” just getting your paddle wet, a
more experienced paddler looking to expand on your skills
or someone in between, The Kayak Centre offers an array of
instructional programs to get you and your boat on the water.
Teaching is the heart of our business and we love sharing our
enthusiasm of the sport with hundreds of paddlers that visit the
Centre every season—we’ve expanded our offerings for 2008
and invite you to join our ACA & BCU certified instructors for a
great day on the water.
Looking to get your feet wet and see if kayaking is for you? This half
day course will give you a great introduction to the fundamentals
of kayaking including boat entry and exit, basic paddling strokes
and safety on the water. Topics covered include, reverse and
turning strokes, entering and exiting as well as properly launching
your boat. This course can be taken in any type of kayak (sit on top,
mid size, recreational, or fullsize) and is a great way to try a boat
out on the water with instruction before purchasing. Prerequisites
are an open mind and a smile! If you’re looking to learn a bit more
than can be covered in a ½ day, we recommend taking a full day
Oceanplay 1 course.
Looking to take the basics and expand them into moving
water? Well, you’ve come to the right place! This course
introduces you to safely paddling in the surf zone. Leaving
the protected waters behind, we’ll cover surf landings, wave
formation and breaking surf as well as surf zone etiquette and
safety in this full day course. Using mid or fullsize sea kayaks,
we’ll show you the thrill of catching a sweet one and riding it
in! A confident wet exit and Oceanplay 1 or 2 is a prerequisite
for this course.

Oceanplay 1 Basic Kayak Skills
Oceanplay 2
The journey begins here! Our full-day gateway course to the
sport of kayaking. Redesigned for 2008, Oceanplay I introduces
basic sea kayaking skills and safety to the beginning paddler.
The first half of the day will be spent learning and refining
basic paddling strokes and the wet exit. Following lunch, we’ll
embark on a short paddle to practice newly acquired skills and
learn group and self rescues as well as bracing. Other topics
covered include the proper way to empty a boat, launching,
pre-paddle checklist and boat nomenclature. The course is
taught in calm, protected water and by day’s end you’ll feel
ready to head out on your own excursion!
Building on the fundamentals learned in Oceanplay 1,
Oceanplay 2 focuses on refinement of strokes and variety
of rescue techniques including T rescues, paddle float and
unassisted rescues performed in moderate conditions.
This course will get you ready for more advanced paddling
techniques like rolling or advanced paddling conditions.
Discussion of wind, weather, waves as well as safety concerns,
hypothermia and basic first aid are also touched upon. Basic
stroke technique is refined and an introduction of finesse
and combinations of strokes including edging, sculling, and
hanging draw are performed. Suitable for athletic beginners
or those with some prior kayak instruction and the ability to
wet exit with a sprayskirt. Oceanplay 1 is a prerequisite for the
course.

Oceanplay 3
Open Water Skills
Oceanplay 3 introduces more advanced boat handling
skills in moderate conditions with wind and current. This
full day course is a must for any paddler looking to become
competent in on water navigation including using nautical
charts as well as performing rescues in conditions. Oceanplay
3 builds upon stroke technique to maneuver through rocky
shorelines and includes an open water crossing. High braces
and towing techniques are also covered. Oceanplay 1 and 2 or
equivalent experience is a prerequisite for this course, along
with discretion of the instructor. This course can be paired
with Oceanplay 2 for those looking to get their learning on the
fast track in a weekend.

Rocks, Rescues & Surf
This course is designed for paddlers with open water
experience who are looking to expand on those skills even
further. Tidal areas and rocky shorelines provide a great
venue for advanced boat handling techniques in rough
water. Topics include ferrying across current, landing in
rocky shorelines, breaking in and out of eddies and paddling
along rock gardens. Safety, including group communication,
towing, and rough water rescues is an integral component
of this course. Oceanplay1, 2 and 3 or equivalent experience
are prerequisites for the course along with discretion of the
instructor.

Sit On Top Surfing
Tired of flat water paddling or just want to try something
different? Kick it up a notch and give surf kayaking a try!
Narragansett Beach provides the perfect setting for sit on
top surfing, with a sandy beach for landings. No rolling
or previous kayak experience necessary, just a sense of
adventure! This course covers surf etiquette, landings,
reading waves and reentry. You’ll be hooked on kayak surfing
after giving it a try!

Our rolling clinic is perfect for the non-rolling kayaker or for
those looking to brush up on their rolling skills. Great for those

company of other women. If you’re anxious to get into kayaking
or want to brush up on your skills in a supportive environment
with fellow women paddlers, here’s your chance. The content

The Kayak Centre offers a $25 discount on any Oceanplay course with a full or mid-size kayak purchase from the Centre and an additional $10
discount if the participant brings their own equipment. Equipment should include appropriate kayak, life vest, paddle and sprayskirt. Please note

Moonlight Paddle
Join us for an evening of paddling magic as we watch the
night sky come alive. What a terrific way to experience
the wonders of night kayaking under a full moon. The
location is Wickford Harbor and the rain date for each
event will be the evening immediately following the
scheduled date.

Our guided harbor tours are the perfect way to get acquainted
with the basics of sea kayaking while experiencing the charm
of historic Wickford Village. Accompanied by one of our
professional guides you’ll glide through the tranquil waters
of Wickford Cove and take in the scenery from a spectacular
vantage point. Our fleet includes single and double touring
kayaks, which are exceptionally stable and perfect for paddlers
of all abilities. Each trip is approximately 3 hours and includes
refreshments.
See the beauty and history of the Providence shoreline on our
new Urban Paddle. We’ll put in at the Pawtucket Town Landing
where the Blackstone and Seekonk Rivers meet, just down
from Slater Mill where the American Industrial Revolution
began. From there we’ll paddle south towards Providence,
past Swan Point Cemetery and an array of historic mills, stop
for a snack at Bold Point Park, and head towards the revitalized
Providence riverfront. We will continue on to Waterplace Park
and then down to the Hurricane Barrier before taking out at
Collier Point. This gentle excursion is perfect for all abilities
and we use stable double and single kayaks. Bring your lunch.

Coastal Tour - Wickford
This is an open water tour following a scenic southerly
route once we depart Wickford Harbor. During our trip we
will explore North Kingstown’s various coves and beaches
including Bissell Cove, Rome Point and Fox Island. If you
have already enjoyed our Wickford Harbor Tour and want a
bit more adventure, this is the tour for you. Double kayaks are
used for this trip and participants must be at least 16 years
of age.

Day Trip to Block Island
The fun will start as we head out of the Charlestown Breachway!
Destination... North Light on Block Island, approximately 10
miles. After a beach picnic at the lighthouse we’ll paddle up the
east side of Block Island under majestic bluffs to Old Harbor
where there should be time to enjoy a cooling beverage prior
to boarding the ferry for our return to the mainland. This is
a true open ocean experience, COMPETENT PADDLERS
ONLY. If weather conditions do not permit, The Kayak Centre
reserves the right to change the location of the trip.

Great Swamp Tour
This trip is an excursion into hidden jungle-like retreats
that cannot be reached any other way. We will float
into a vast state-owned management area on one river,
paddle across a shallow but wide pond, and then finish
the trip on another river that snakes its way through
dense vine-draped vegetation. Lunch will be enjoyed on
a picturesque point jutting out into the pond. There will

The Kayak Centre is pleased to offer a sea kayaking program
dedicated to kids 9-14 years of age. The day is designed to
be fun while introducing kids to the techniques necessary
for safe paddling. We’ll use smaller kayaks and paddling

will be on safety and skill development while enhancing the
learning experience through the use of games and waterplay
activities.

Kayak Kamp
This is a 3 day non-residential paddling program designed
especially for youths aged 11 to 15. The three days are
intended to be fun, fun, fun while introducing kids to the
techniques necessary for safe paddling. We will teach a wide
variety of paddle strokes, solo and group rescues and we’ll
even have a chance to paddle some double kayaks during
the course of the program. Much like our Oceanplay for Kids,
the focus of our time will be on safety and skill development
while enhancing the learning experience through the use of

Block Island
These two day events are $450 per person (based on double occupancy) and
include one night of lodging at the Narragansett Inn on Block Island and four meals,
as well as equipment and instruction. The three day package is $650 per person and
includes another day of paddling and one more night of lodging as well as breakfast
and lunch. Join us for a terrific paddling experience and enjoy the escape to this
fabulous island off the coast of Rhode Island.
Fast Track Workshop - 2 Day
Our fast track workshops are ideal for athletic beginners who really want to push
themselves a bit or experienced paddlers who are looking to refresh their skills
and work on some additional technique. The content of this two-day instructional
course will be our Oceanplay 2 and 3 programs combined with a day trip along the
rugged Block Island coastline.
Fast Track Workshop - 3 Day
Take your paddling to a whole new level by adding an additional day on the water
with us at Block Island. This workshop will include the content of our two-day
program, with the addition of a long open ocean paddle with a beach landing on
the third day.
International Kayaking Adventures
Turks & Caicos - February 2009
The turquoise waters of the Caribbean offer a spectacular venue for this week of sea kayaking! Our destination will be Turks and
Caicos, an island chain at the south end of the Bahamas, about 575 miles southeast of Miami. The islands are a paddler’s paradise
and offer 200 miles of powdered sugar beaches and shimmering water which ranges in color from aquamarine to cobalt blue.
This is an incredible week long adventure exploring and enjoying five segments of this fabulous string of islands. The journey
begins in Providenciales, “Provo”. We will spend the first evening on Provo and then depart for North Caicos, stopping for brief
visits to Water Cay and Little Water Cay. Expect fabulous scenery and marine life including rays, bonefish, eel and a few iguanas.
We will spend the next two days exploring these fabulous waters and enjoying several of the most pristine and deserted beaches
that the Caribbean has to offer. We will depart North Caicos en route to Middle Caicos (population, 275) where we’ll spend the
next three days and nights. Middle Caicos has a dramatic coastline with limestone cliffs, long sandy beaches and it is the home to
a very large cave network. During our time on Middle Caicos we will paddle two of the days, one day enjoying lunch at a native
home and we will also have an opportunity to do some guided cave exploration and mountain biking. This trip will be led by The
Kayak Centre Team working with Big Blue Unlimited, of Turks & Caicos.
Our final evening will be spent on Provo soaking up the Caribbean flavor of the island and enjoying the nightlife and night skies
- as you wish. This is an all inclusive trip and includes roundtrip airfare, lodging, breakfast, lunches and most dinners as well as
guiding, equipment and transportation.

Womens Workshop - 2 Day
Taught for women by women
This course is the ideal way for women to further discover paddling and leave
their stress and busy schedules behind while enhancing their skills. This twoday program combines aspects of Oceanplay 1 & 2 in a fun and supportive
environment taught by women for women. Following the first day of the program
we’ll meet for a group dinner and lively conversation.
If you don’t have the time to join us for multiple days on Block Island, sign up for the first day of any of our Block Island
workshops for $150. This includes equipment, instruction and lunch.

Iceland - June 2008 & 2009
This wonderland is only a brief five hour flight from Boston and we will visit during the time of unending daylight. We have taken
care to offer a terrific mix of paddling and exploration in an effort to maximize your enjoyment of both the natural wonder of this
rugged island, its culture, and its warm and friendly people.
This is an eight day, seven night adventure and will depart on Friday evening . The trip will be led by members of The Kayak Centre
team in conjunction with a highly experienced Icelandic outfitter.
The trip includes all travel and lodging in Iceland, all meals with the exception of alcoholic beverages, the first night in Stykkisholmur
and lunch in Reykjavik on Friday. All kayak gear and guide services are included.
