more experienced paddler looking to expand on your skills
or someone in between, The Kayak Centre offers an array of

Essential Kayak Skills
On Water Skills
Oceanplay 1
Oceanplay 2
The journey begins here! Our full-day gateway course to
the sport of kayaking. Oceanplay I introduces you to sea
kayaking and safety skills.. The first half of the day will be
spent learning and refining essential paddling strokes and the
wet exit. Following lunch, we’ll embark on a short paddle to
practice newly acquired skills and learn group and self rescues
as well as bracing. Other topics covered include the proper
way to empty a boat, launching, pre-paddle checklist and
boat nomenclature. The course is taught in calm, protected
water and by day’s end you’ll feel ready to head out on your
own excursion!
Building on the fundamentals learned in Oceanplay 1, Oceanplay 2 focuses on refinement of strokes and a variety of rescue
techniques including T rescues, paddle float and unassisted
rescues performed in moderate conditions. This course will
get you ready for more advanced paddling techniques like
rolling or advanced paddling conditions. Discussion of wind,
weather, waves as well as safety concerns, hypothermia
and basic first aid are also touched upon. Stroke technique
is refined and an introduction of finesse and combinations
of strokes including edging, sculling, and hanging draw are
performed. Suitable for athletic beginners or those with some
prior kayak instruction. Ability to wet exit with a sprayskirt or
Oceanplay 1 is a prerequisite for the course.

Oceanplay 3
Oceanplay 3 introduces more advanced boat handling
skills in moderate conditions with wind and current. This
full day course is a must for any paddler looking to become
competent in on water navigation including using nautical
charts as well as performing rescues in conditions. Oceanplay
3 builds upon stroke technique to maneuver through rocky
shorelines and includes an open water crossing. High braces
and towing techniques are also covered. Oceanplay 1 and 2 or
equivalent experience is a prerequisite for this course, along
with discretion of the instructor. This course can be paired
with Oceanplay 2 for those looking to get their learning on the
fast track in a weekend.

Play, Rocks & Surf
Oceanplay 4
This course is designed for paddlers with open water
experience who are looking to expand those skills even
further. Tidal areas and rocky shorelines provide a great
venue for advanced boat handling techniques in rough
water. Topics include ferrying across current, landing in
rocky shorelines, breaking in and out of eddies and paddling
along rock gardens. Safety, including group communication,
towing, and rough water rescues is an integral component of
this course. Oceanplay 1, 2 and 3 or equivalent experience
are prerequisites for the course along with the discretion of
the instructor.

Quick Start
Long Boat Surfing
Looking to get your feet wet and see if kayaking is for you? This half
day course will give you a great introduction to the fundamentals
of kayaking including boat entry and exit, basic paddling strokes
and safety on the water. Topics covered include, reverse and
turning strokes, entering and exiting as well as properly launching
your boat. This course can be taken in any type of kayak (sit on top,
mid size, recreational, or fullsize) and is a great way to try a boat
out on the water with instruction before purchasing. Prerequisites
are an open mind and a smile! If you’re looking to learn a bit more
than can be covered in a ½ day, we recommend taking a full day
Oceanplay 1 course.
Looking to take the surfing basics and quickly expand them
into moving water? Well, you’ve come to the right place! After
quickly revisiting the essential skills needed in the surf we will
leave behind the protected waters, adjust our helmets and
head out into the surf zone. We’ll cover surf landings, wave
formation and breaking surf as well as surf zone etiquette and
safety in this full day course. Using mid or full size sea kayaks,
we’ll show you the thrill of catching a sweet one and riding it
in! A confident wet exit and Oceanplay 1 or 2 are prerequisites
for this course, or discretion of the instructor.

Sit On Top Surfing
Tired of flat water paddling or just want to try something
different? Kick it up a notch and give surf kayaking a try!
Narragansett Beach provides the perfect setting for sit on
top surfing, with a sandy beach for landings. No rolling
or previous kayak experience necessary, just a sense of
adventure! This course covers surf etiquette, landings,
reading waves and reentry. You’ll be hooked on kayak surfing
after giving it a try!

Coastal Tour - Wickford
Urban Paddle
This is an open water tour following a scenic southerly
route once we depart Wickford Harbor. During our trip we
will explore North Kingstown’s various coves and beaches
including Bissell Cove, Rome Point and Fox Island. If you
have already enjoyed our Wickford Harbor Tour and want a
bit more adventure, this is the tour for you. Double kayaks are
used for this trip and participants must be at least 16 years
of age.
See the beauty and history of the Providence shoreline on our
new Urban Paddle. We’ll put in at the Pawtucket Town Landing
where the Blackstone and Seekonk Rivers meet, just down
from Slater Mill where the American Industrial Revolution
began. From there we’ll paddle south towards Providence,
past Swan Point Cemetery and an array of historic mills, stop
for a snack at Bold Point Park, and head towards the revitalized
Providence riverfront. We will continue on to Waterplace Park
and then down to the Hurricane Barrier before taking out at
Collier Point. This gentle excursion is perfect for all abilities
and we use stable double and single kayaks. Bring your lunch.

Newport Coastal Tour
We will depart from King’s Beach paddling along the beautiful
Newport coast seeing the mansions from an amazing vantage
point. Newport’s Ocean Drive offers some of Rhode Island’s
most spectacular scenery and you can take it all in from the
seat of one of our double kayaks. This is a don’t miss trip.
We will meet at The Kayak Centre at 9am for group travel
to Newport. Please remember to pack your lunch for this
adventure.

Jamestown Coastal Tour
We will depart from historic Fort Wetherill, with its’ 100 foot
high granite cliffs and travel along the rocky shoreline of
Jamestown with spectacular views of Newport Harbor, Fort
Adams and Castle Hill. This is a fun trip and offers not only a
great escape but a bit of adventure. Join us and take in some
of the best scenery that the East Bay has to offer. Double
kayaks will be used for this adventure and we encourage you
to pack your lunch.

Great Swamp Tour
This trip is an excursion into hidden jungle-like retreats that
cannot be reached any other way. We will float into a vast
state-owned management area on one river, paddle across a
shallow but wide pond, and then finish the trip on another river
that snakes its way through dense vine-draped vegetation.
Lunch will be enjoyed on a picturesque point jutting out into
the pond. There will be no doubt in your mind why this trip is
called the Great Swamp adventure.

Seal Watching
The waters around the Wickford area often provide a wonderful
opportunity to view harbor seals. Join us for this terrific
experience. In our double kayaks, we’ll get close enough to
quietly observe but keep plenty of distance so that we don’t
disturb. A great way to spend part of a crisp November day.

Wickford Harbor Tour
Our guided harbor tours are the perfect way to get
acquainted with the basics of sea kayaking while
experiencing the charm of historic Wickford Village.
Accompanied by one of our professional guides you’ll
glide through the tranquil waters of Wickford Cove and
take in the scenery from a spectacular vantage point. Our
fleet includes single and double touring kayaks, which
are exceptionally stable and perfect for paddlers of all
abilities. Each trip is approximately 3 hours and includes
refreshments.
Trips depart twice daily in July & August (except Sun am) and
weekends and holidays in May, June & Sept.

The Kayak Centre is pleased to offer a sea kayaking program
dedicated to kids 9-14 years of age. The day is designed to
be fun while introducing kids to the techniques necessary

will be on safety and skill development while enhancing the
learning experience through the use of games and waterplay
activities.

Bring your Mom or Dad for a terrific morning on the water!
No experience required. Accompanied by a professional
guide you’ll both experience the charm of Wickford
Village from our stable fleet of double kayaks. Treat your

won’t be disappointed. We suggest comfortable clothing
that can get wet (just in case!) as well as watersport shoes

This is a 3 day non-residential paddling program designed
especially for youths aged 11 to 15. The three days are
intended to be fun, fun, fun while introducing kids to the
techniques necessary for safe paddling. We will teach a wide
variety of paddle strokes, solo and group rescues and we’ll
even have a chance to paddle some double kayaks during
the course of the program. Much like our Oceanplay for Kids,
the focus of our time will be on safety and skill development
while enhancing the learning experience through the use of
games and waterplay activities.

Moonlight Paddle
Join us for an evening of paddling magic as we watch the
night sky come alive. What a terrific way to experience
the wonders of night kayaking under a full moon. The
location is Wickford Harbor and the rain date for each

Block Island with Ben Lawry
Block Island is one of the best kept secrets in New England! This is a fabulous island off
of the coast of Rhode Island. We invite you to join us for a few days of kayak instruction
at Block Island featuring Ben Lawry, an internationally accomplished paddler, coach and
instructor. Our meeting place and venue will be the rustic Narragansett Inn on Block Island.
We offer two and three day workshops. All workshops include equipment, instruction,
and lunch daily as well as a group dinner following the first day of paddling. The two day
workshop including dinner is $325 and the three day workshop is $475. A group of rooms
will be held at the Narragansett Inn up until two weeks before the event. There is a two
night minimum at the Inn. Block Island is a busy place and lodging books quickly during

2 Day Womens
Workshop
Our Fast Track Workshops are ideal for any athletic
beginners who really want to push themselves a bit or
experienced paddlers who are looking to refresh their
skills and work on some additional technique. The content
of the two day workshop will be our Oceanplay 2 and 3
programs combined with a day trip along the rugged Block
Island coastline. You can take your paddling to whole new
level with an additional day on the water with us. The third
day will include a long open ocean paddle with a beach
landing.
This is a great workshop and a terrific way for women to
further discover paddling and leave their stress and busy
schedules behind while enhancing their skills. Over the years,
many participants have enjoyed this workshop and setting
so much that they have returned for a second or third time.
This two day program is taught by women, for women and
combines aspects of Oceanplay 1, 2 and 3 in a fun, supportive
learning environment.
If you don’t have the time to join us for multiple days on Block Island, sign up for the first day of any of our Block Island
workshops for $150. This includes equipment, instruction and lunch.

These are complimentary paddling trips with members of The Kayak Centre team.
These are not instructional trips (although we will certainly share a few paddling tips along the way) but a fun and enjoyable day on
the water. If you have purchased a kayak from us or joined us for an Oceanplay Instructional course you are invited to reserve a space
on one of these trips. Reservations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis and limited to one trip per customer per season.
In the event that a trip has not filled on the day before the trip and you have already joined us for an earlier appreciation trip – you are
welcome to join for a second trip. Please bring an appropriate boat for the paddling activity or alert us when you reserve a space that
you will need a boat for the trip.

Ben Lawry has joined The Kayak Centre team! Ben is an
internationally known paddler and has been teaching and guiding
for more than 15 years. He has taught on 4 different continents and
is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Instructor Trainer (IT) in
sea kayak, white water, and surf, and is also a British Canoe Union
(BCU) coach. He has been paddling for more than 30 years and
an avid paddling competitor in a variety of watercraft. If you are
looking for a special on water learning experience with Ben Lawry,
you won’t be disappointed.
Stroke and Skill Development Clinics
– Evenings, 2 hours

Tune ups, tips and general paddling knowledge from the world
of Ben Lawry. We will pick a skill set, disassemble it and then
rebuild it with a focus on functionality and optimal form. Each
session will have a different focus, building on previous sessions
and classes to keep us scratching our heads, always working to
take your skills to the next level.
Core Paddling - 1 Day
$135
This class covers kayak fundamentals. The goal is to provide a
solid ergonomic and efficient set of skills for people to grow and
develop throughout their kayaking career. The topics covered
include: correct grip and hand placement on the paddle shaft,
checking for optimal boat fit and an explanation of terms. Balance,
posture and tilting are covered as well as correct blade and boat
use to ensure a solid foundation for growth. Strokes and Skills
covered are dictated by the group, the conditions and the setting
- focus is on the building blocks.
Forward Stroke Course – 1 Day
$135
Over 99% of your time is spent paddling forward, yet it is very
rarely talked about or taught as an expert skill set. This is an
introduction to set you on the correct path for a more enjoyable
and efficient paddling career. Efficiency and correct body use are
the keys to ensuring hours of paddling enjoyment with ease and
grace. We will start with exercises on the ground and work on
our form and theory and then move to the water and into our
kayaks.
Advanced Forward Stroke Course
– 1/2 Day
$55
Designed for those who have previously taken a forward stroke
class, we will quickly revisit some of the key-points, then warm
up, paddle and focus on your stroke mechanics. We will be
shooting video in this class, so bring your best looking kit!
Fast Track Workshop at Block

Surf Kayak Camp in Newport – 4
Days $600 With Nige Robinson
and Ben
Learn to Surf with one of the best - we have Nige Robinson (yes
a British Nigel) www.nigerobinson.co.uk coming for 4 days of
surf kayaking instruction. A must for Surf Kayakers, Surf Kayak
Instructors and those whose goal is to get better in the surf in
a kayak. The goals of this class are to take your surfing skills to
the next level while having a great time.
Rocks & Ledges – 1 Day $135
You will learn how to take the fundamental skills from Core
Paddling to practical skills for a rocks and ledges environment.
We will use the conditions present to shape the class to best
suit the needs of the participants. The focus will be on skill
acquisition through techniques to maximize the performance
of the kayak and kayaker while pretending we are in rock
gardens. Then once the skills are acquired we shall but them to
the test and play in some rock gardens. Learning about timing,
use of water and safety while we are there.
Core Paddling is a prerequisite for this class (or discretion of
the instructor.
Rescues & Towing - 1 Day $135
We will take it back to the fundamentals - rescue priorities,
rescue safety and functionality - we will explore a variety of
rescues and towing techniques. Following a quick refresher,
we will run a few practice scenarios with a good amount of
focus on debrief so we can learn most from the activity.
