DIGITAL BALL 2015 ® TechBridge Program 2015.indd 1 4/17/15 7:06 PM welcome To Our Dedicated Supporters, I am delighted to share with you the tremendous expansion that TechBridge has experienced within the past year as we continue to widen and deepen our mission’s impact. We’ve been growing through new nonprofit services, through the vertical depths we can now achieve to address social challenges like hunger and poverty, and through local engagement in more communities where nonprofits strive to help the world with limited resources. The upcoming year at TechBridge is the year of impact. Specifically we’re looking to impact the fight against poverty, a sector in which the smaller nonprofits carry the majority of the burden but have the fewest resources to acquire the technology they need. By innovating and investing in tools and expertise targeted to these nonprofits, we can accelerate their efforts to alleviate poverty across the nation and beyond. But it’s not enough to invest and innovate. Like my old math teachers used to say: you’ve got to show your work. The hardworking nonprofits we serve and you, our generous supporters, should know that we have a global reach with a community focus: we connect IT leaders and the business community with opportunities to empower your local nonprofit landscape with creative opportunities for involvement like our Adopt-a-Nonprofit program, the TechBridge Ambassador group, and technology executive nonprofit board placements. Last year we made a bold pledge: to serve 1,000 nonprofits by 2017. We are excited that the momentum created by your investments is bringing us closer and closer to that goal. We’re making huge strides together, but there’s still work to be done. Let’s keep the energy going by getting more nonprofit IT projects adopted; keep referring nonprofits that help causes you care about; and connect us with foundations, corporations, organizations, and funders that would make meaningful partners in advancing TechBridge’s impact. Because of you, we can continue to fuel nonprofits in their drive towards positive social change. For that, we earnestly thank you. The suite of products and services TechBridge provides empowers nonprofits to better serve their clients, funders and volunteers through the use of innovative technology. Our Nonprofit Technology Roadmap bridges nonprofits according to their technology maturity stage. IT Strategy & Consulting IT Assessment & Strategic Planning This process is to help nonprofits, and their funders, understand precisely in what state the organization’s technology and operational efficiencies currently are. From there we walk nonprofits through the technology planning process carving out the vision of how technology could expand their reach and quality of community service. The process includes the following: Technology Consulting • Discovery and assessment • Recommendations customized according to each nonprofit’s needs • Procurement support and access to discounted software and services • Project implementation at subsidized rates • Process optimization – We define and document current processes, discover opportunities to streamline and/or automate and define and implement new processes. • Software selection – We perform software reviews and recommendations for tools such as Learning Management System or a collaboration tool. • Project management – We manage timelines, project plans, and key outcomes for a project that impacts many aspects of operations. • Implementation services – We also manage vendors, partners, and staff in complex rollouts of new technology tools. New technologies and optimized business processes allow nonprofits to do more with existing resources and increase service delivery to the community. TechBridge, with the help of our partners, provides comprehensive consulting services to help nonprofits maximize their technology investments. These technology consulting services include: case study Caminar Latino or “Latino Journey” carries out its mission of helping Latino families affected by violence by creating safe spaces for each family member to begin their journey towards non-violence. We’ve served Caminar Latino through several projects. Starting with an IT assessment where we did a deep dive into their IT infrastructure, business applications and data management. Following the assessment, two projects were launched: implementing Microsoft’s cloud-based Office 365 and moving to a centralized, online database solution that allows tracking—which allows them to reduce case management time and reporting on the families they serve. Through a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation, TechBridge was able to provide Caminar Latino with a comprehensive, cloud-based data management solution, which allows them to reduce case management time and costs, make data-driven decisions, and increase the quality and quantity of their services to the community. 6 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 6 4/17/15 7:06 PM TechBridge Services Nonprofit Cloud Essentials TM VOIP Phone Nonprofits can experience the benefits of a full-featured phone system through our partnership with Vonage Business Solutions. TechBridge DataBasics TM Nonprofits can manage and report on key business functions on demand with this program. DataBasics is a Salesforce platform with a suite designed for the needs of nonprofits. It leverages the licenses generously donated to nonprofits by the Salesforce Foundation. Our clients can connect, track and report on clients, donors, volunteers, events and campaigns through one central location that can be accessed anytime and anywhere. Mobile Application We provide nonprofits with the tools and knowledge to embrace complete mobility so that they can thrive in a world where capturing information, collaborating on ideas, accepting donations, and serving clients anytime and anywhere is a reality. • Mobile App Development – We can provide the tools, partnerships, technology and experience to make a nonprofit’s mobile app project a success. • Mobile Training – Experience personalized assistance downloading, configuring and using best-in-business mobile apps through experimentations and more while having fun learning new technology. • Mobile Strategy and Assessment – We provide a Mobile Strategy and Assessment to help nonprofits effectively navigate the transition to mobile trends. • Access current information in a centralized database • Produce reports using pre-built templates • Online, browser-based availability • A flexible, editable platform • Training and support Salesforce Customization We’ve developed, and continue to improve upon, custom modules to address the unique programs and data management needs of nonprofits. Custom modules can include, but are not limited to: “Thanks to our partnership with TechBridge, Caminar Latino has the support and resources to get the IT infrastructure we need. In turn, our team has been able to spend less time on programmatic tracking and reporting and more time in the field helping to increase the safety and well being of Latino families affected by domestic violence. We are so grateful to have an organization like TechBridge in our community who is able to provide these essential services to nonprofits like ours.” •Programs • Client-intake and case management • Emergency assistance Microsoft Office 365 The very same applications that empower corporations to be the utmost productive are the same that nonprofits can use to improve their efficiency. Thanks to Microsoft’s generous support, we can help nonprofits become powered by the cloud—where they can access up-to-date applications and files anywhere and on any device. Google Solutions Nonprofit application users of Google receive email addresses, word processing tools, spreadsheets, and presentations plus a calendaring system, Web authoring tools and access to dozens of other flexible and affordable services. We implement Google Solutions that make sense for our clients. Jessica Nunan, LMSW Executive Director Caminar Latino 7 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 7 4/17/15 7:06 PM TechBridge Services The SCM4Hunger™ Program We now offer a cloud-based, supply chain management platform for high-volume food banks. It helps streamline management of food inventories and empowers hunger-focused nonprofits to interact with corporate donors to collect food surplus or overflows and converting that inventory into goods available to local hunger agencies through online ordering. The SCM4Hunger program offers different modules to accomplish this. Food Bank Warehouses Our SCM4Hunger Warehouse Management Module manages the inventory of hunger relief warehouses by leveraging best practices from the for-profit world for on-demand inventory control—while being tailored to fit the specific needs and nomenclature of humanitarian relief in the nonprofit world. Virtual Food Drives Virtual Food Drive is an online fundraising tool that enables food banks to conduct virtual food drives in which donors, corporations and/or individuals can digitally submit donations. This way we can empower food banks with a simple and effective way to do online fundraising while simultaneously educating the donor on the additional buying power their cash donation can make. Feeding America Food Banks Our partners at The Feeding America Network move the majority of food for U.S. hunger relief across the country each year using the SCM4Hunger platform. As the U.S.’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, Feeding America provides low-income individuals and families with the fuel to survive and even thrive. The solution we developed together includes customized online ordering, in-kind donations management and online auction modules—called AgencyExpress, DonorExpress, and Choice respectively. Feeding America and its nationwide network of food banks can now receive products more quickly and more efficiently than ever before. “Millions of pounds of nutritious food donations flow through TechBridge systems within Feeding America. Linking this donated food to our nationwide network of food banks, and then to their local meal programs and food pantries, is a vital operation that is performed daily throughout our distribution chain.” Feeding America 8 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 8 4/17/15 7:06 PM hosts 2015 Digital Ball Hosts Walt Carter CIO Generation Mortgage Company Hometown: LaGrange, NC Host since 2012 2015 Hosts Emeritus TechBridge is grateful for the support of the CIO community, past and present. To successfully execute and grow that mission however, they need to leverage the same business-critical technology solutions that support for-profit organizations. Unfortunately, they have to do this on a nonprofit budget. That’s where you come in. For those nonprofits that can’t afford even TechBridge’s subsidized rates for their technology needs, we have developed the Adopt-a-Nonprofit program to bridge that gap. After performing a technology assessment to determine a nonprofit’s current infrastructure and organizational goals, TechBridge develops an IT strategy/roadmap. We then identify and scope specific technology projects required to move them toward their defined goals. If a nonprofit cannot fund a much-needed project, TechBridge seeks out a corporate partner to “adopt” the nonprofit and provide funding and skilled volunteers, if desired, to complete the project. ® It’s a Win for Sponsors (Adopters): It’s a Win for Nonprofits (Adoptees) • Delivers an outlet for IT skill-based volunteerism—use your valuable resources and IT skills to strengthen a nonprofit engaged in a cause you care about • Provides a grant to offset technology project costs • Provides employees from IT and other functional areas with skillbased volunteer opportunities to further their professional and personal development • Stabilizes and optimizes computing environment so focus is on mission and not technology • Utilizes skilled technology professionals who can assist with adopted project • Builds a relationship with a community-minded corporate partner • Enhances team morale and company culture by providing group volunteer activities (IT-related or otherwise), improving employee retention and brand awareness Thanks to sponsor participation in the Adopt-a-Nonprofit program, more nonprofits will have access to the IT support they need. That means more homeless individuals receive shelter, more troubled children get counseling, more residents in rural areas have healthcare, and more disadvantaged teens get access to educational opportunities. • Offers valuable networking opportunities with clients, prospects and partners—receive two invitations to each of three TechBridge sponsor appreciation receptions throughout the year • Enables you to build your brand among TechBridge supporters while doing good works in the community—a smart investment of your marketing, sales and/or philanthropic budgets Together we can make a difference in our community. 14 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 14 4/17/15 7:06 PM How You Can Get Involved Recycling Reduce your office clutter (and carbon footprint) and give your aging electronics a second life by donating the devices and equipment to benefit TechBridge and the nonprofits it serves! Equipment that is not directly put to use among TechBridge nonprofit clients is refurbished and resold, or recycled, with TechBridge receiving the proceeds. Each donor is appreciatively recognized by TechBridge. For more information, contact [email protected]. Technology Community Habitat House Leveraging TechBridge as the facilitator, a group of CIOs combined the efforts of their companies for a service project in 2005. They decided to build a house for a hardworking Atlanta family with Habitat for Humanity and the tradition continues to this day. Enjoy this annual event filled with golfing and networking with Atlanta IT executives all for a cause you care about. With more than 175 participants in 2014, the event raised a record $91,500 for the technology programs and services that TechBridge offers our community’s nonprofits. Let’s keep the momentum going on Monday, October 26 at The Golf Club of Georgia and make 2015 the biggest year yet! Each year, Atlanta-area corporations come together to sponsor the build and provide 280 volunteers (from their staff) to build the house. The build is a great opportunity for peer-to-peer networking with others in the IT community and a rewarding team-building experience all while building a house for a hardworking, local family. 2015 Honorary Co-Chairs • Miriam McLemore, CIO – Global Functions at The Coca-Cola Company • Anil Cheriyan, CIO at SunTrust Bank, Inc. This endeavor grows our expertise for resolving operational issues that nonprofits face. Aidmatrix’s technology has been instrumental in pioneering the change of how supplies are delivered for everything from disaster relief to the day-to-day needs of organizations. The hunger program is a cloud-based, supply chain management (SCM) software that has been especially key in the operations of hunger relief worldwide; their biggest client being Feeding America, which is a nationwide network of 200 food banks. With the help of this SCM software technology, the Feeding America Network was able to help provide 3.3 billion meals directly to individuals and families throughout the United States and within Puerto Rico in 2014. We will now be able to dive deeper within the operational challenges that hinder our fellow nonprofits, especially those combatting hunger. This venture will also further strengthen the technology solutions that we currently provide our clients. “We view this acquisition as a great fit for TechBridge and it ensures that these systems, which are so important to our network, have support and a strategic direction. And we are glad that folks from Aidmatrix, who have been very supportive and involved with our business, will continue to be part of our mission to solve the problem of hunger in America.” Connie Ahalt, IT Deployment Director of Feeding America 18 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 18 4/17/15 7:06 PM New Frontiers TechBridge welcomed 125 guests to the Cahaba Grand in Birmingham, Alabama on March 21, 2015 for an elegant evening in support of leveraging technology to alleviate social challenges in the community. This event was the culmination of the first TechBridge Digital Event Series in Alabama. The Series raised $77,000 to spread the reach of TechBridge’s mission to the nonprofits of Alabama. The crowd also raised $9,500 to adopt a technology project for Grace House Ministries, a long-term group home for girls (ages 6-21) in Fairfield, Alabama, who have been removed from the custody of their families due to abuse or neglect. Like the Digital Ball in Atlanta, the event’s attendees made new connections and learned about our impression on the community and the avenues through which they can get involved. That night, Alabama Power Company CIO, David Cox, announced that through the Alabama Power Foundation, TechBridge has been awarded a $10,000 grant for technology assessments for six Alabama nonprofits—these nonprofits will be selected by TechBridge’s Alabama Advisory Board and will each receive a technology assessment to provide a roadmap to achieving stability and operational efficiencies and to leveraging technology to grow their mission. Pictured here (from left to right) Alabama Power Company CIO, David Cox; TechBridge Alabama Advisory Board Chair, Scott McGlaun; Grace House Ministries Director of Development & Communications, Valerie Gerber; and TechBridge CEO, James Franklin. The goal, as with everything we do, was to spark the IT community’s imagination for what technology can make possible for Alabama’s nonprofits. Plans for the 2016 Digital Event Series in Alabama are currently under way and will be announced in upcoming months. 19 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 19 4/17/15 7:06 PM past TechBridge Financial Report Revenue Fiscal Year 2014, Ended June 30, 2014 Contribrutions & Grants Earned Revenue Earned Revenue .......... $ 1,012,000 Contributions & Grants... $ 809,000 Special Events ............ $ 1,174,000 34% 39% Last year TechBridge served over 100 nonprofits that collectively touched 7.5 million people. To support its mission to help homeless veterans, ASUS solicits donations, which are sold in its thrift store. Prior to winning the Award, ASUS manually managed its donor scheduling and truck routes to pick up the donations. Moving from a completely paper-based system to a centralized database and online route mapping system has completely transformed the organization. ASUS has doubled its business, the quality of its donations has improved, fuel costs have been cut in half, and its donors and staff are happier as shown in the rising satisfaction scores on Yelp and Facebook. 25 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 25 4/17/15 7:07 PM judges 2015 Technology Innovation Award Judges Determining the finalists and winner for the Technology Innovation Award is the challenge undertaken by an esteemed panel of judges with notable experience and expertise in both the nonprofit and for-profit business sectors. Proposed Project The online CRM system developed by the national BBBS organization does not meet all the needs of the Atlanta affiliate. BBBSMA wishes to augment its CRM system to reduce paper, efficiently track client data, and more easily generate reports for partners, grants and internal review. Additionally, enhancing its website, implementing an online scheduling application, and utilizing a “live chat” feature during work hours will make it easier for volunteers and parents to find information, apply for the program and get questions answered in real time. Impact on Organization’s Efficiency and Effectiveness Current response time to new inquiries is seven days with only 19% of those who inquire about the program coming in for an interview. Using the online scheduling application, volunteers and parents will be able to log on and select a convenient interview time increasing in-person interviews to an estimated 35%. Specific requirements for match monitoring, including regular check-ins with volunteers, children and parents, are set by the national organization. BBBSMA currently averages 85% for on-time compliance for this requirement. Eliminating the need to make multiple follow-up phone calls, live chat would allow participants to sign on during office hours and check-in with a match specialist increasing BBBSMA’s compliance to its goal of 99%. Innovative Use of Technology Leveraging responsive technologies, such as online scheduling and live chat, to provide real-time support to volunteers, parents and children is essential to making them feel more supported by BBBSMA. Employing a comprehensive CRM system that better manages its client and program data can propel BBBSMA toward its goal of doubling the number of children served without increasing staff or expenses. 28 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 28 4/17/15 7:07 PM 2015 Technology Innovation Award Finalists Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta Historic Oakland Foundation Since 1986 Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Metro Atlanta has been dedicated to helping eliminate substandard housing by constructing and rehabilitating houses in Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties; advocating for fair and just housing policies; and providing training and accessible resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Founded in 1976, the Historic Oakland Foundation (HOF) partners with the City of Atlanta to preserve, restore, enhance, and share Oakland Cemetery with the public. Oakland is an outdoor sculpture museum with monuments recognized by the Smithsonian, an arboretum recognized by the Association of Public Gardens and Arboreta, and a certified Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. Proposed Project Hampered by an obsolete CRM system, a taxed IT system and a desktop-based office, Habitat seeks to become more responsive and more mobile. Implementing a new CRM system to efficiently manage and communicate with volunteers and donors and enable offsite homeowner application, selection and property acquisition, will make this a reality. Proposed Project Oakland Cemetery is consistently ranked within the top 5 Atlanta attractions by TripAdvisor.com hosting an estimated 50,000 visitors annually. To enhance the visitor’s experience, HOF envisions a comprehensive mobile app that will provide a self-guided tour, information about the cemetery including history, architectural and horticultural highlights, and notables buried there, as well as schedules and push notifications for special events and tours. Impact on Organization’s Efficiency and Effectiveness Moving to the cloud will result in Habitat saving at least $63,550/ year by eliminating the need to open and staff a satellite office. Mobile volunteer sign-up will save hours of coordinator time and improve service to volunteers by allowing them to sign-up 24/7 from anywhere and receive immediate feedback about their chosen activity. This drastically streamlined process will likely result in an additional savings of nearly $8,000 in time per year. Impact on Organization’s Efficiency and Effectiveness Providing detailed information and self-guided tours of Oakland Cemetery along with schedules of other tours and upcoming events, the app would significantly reduce the number of calls currently handled by staff. HOF estimates that this savings will allow them to reapply over 676 hours/year of labor thereby increasing attendance and revenue without increasing staff time. This is also expected to increase the number of visitors taking all types of tours by 10% in year one at no additional cost to HOF. Innovative Use of Technology Currently, Habitat sponsors coordinate their own volunteers. Online sign-up would allow them to manage their volunteers more efficiently—enhancing the sponsorship experience. Once all volunteer slots are filled, the event will automatically close preventing too many volunteers onsite, which is a safety hazard. Presently, no Habitat affiliates have a fully automated online registration system. Additionally, integrating online sign-up with a CRM system will enable Habitat to seamlessly add volunteers to its fundraising efforts, document volunteer hours and produce various CEM reports. Innovative Use of Technology A leader among historic cemeteries and other cultural venues, HOF seeks to build a multi-faceted experience in which visitors explore and enjoy Oakland: as a historical resource, outdoor museum, city park, arboretum, garden, and venue for events. HOF is also creating a hierarchal geodatabase to serve as a repository for historical and restoration information—including mapped locations of 70,000 interred residents, historical and significant trees/plants in the gardens, and details about restoration projects. 29 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 29 4/17/15 7:07 PM leaders TechBridge Board of Directors Board Chair Jay Ferro CIO American Cancer Society Mary Carol Alexander General Manager – Enterprise Sales, Greater Southeast District Microsoft Anil Cheriyan CIO SunTrust Bank, Inc. In 2014 our clients ordered 422 million pounds of food (355 million meals) through our online shopping tool. Last year, 48% of TechBridge’s clients were outside of Georgia. 45,500 donor truckloads are made available to food banks annually through DonorExpress. 40,000 nonprofit agencies use our services/technology every day. Our clients distributed over 785 million pounds of fresh produce to their agencies to help those in need. Nonprofits come to TechBridge through our website, direct searches, TechSoup.org and your referrals! 34 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 34 4/17/15 7:07 PM d. provides the tools to fuel that change. We’ve had 60 adoption transformations to date. Last year, 20% of TechBridge’s nonprofit clients were adopted through the partnerships of corporations. The average length of a data management project is 1.5 months. TechBridge used to have 22 servers and is now down to none due to cloud-based solutions. This year to date, 73% of all new clients are outside of Georgia. Prior to our service, 95% of our new clients were using paper, spread sheets, legacy databases, or more expensive solutions to track their service and impact. 35 TechBridge Program 2015.indd 35 4/17/15 7:07 PM TechBridge Program 2015.indd 36 4/17/15 7:07 PM
