In Aberdeen last Saturday,
the King’s Knights dominated
the first three quarters on
their way to a 42 - 21 Second Round victory over
Hoquiam.
Defense set the tone early
as linebacker Ben Hermes
intercepted a slant pass on
the first offensive play from
scrimmage to give the Knights
the ball on the Grizzlies’ 22.
It took the Knights only five
plays to score as Koa Wilkins
found Cole Mitchell in the end
zone for a four yard touchdown
pass. Jack Van Dyke added the
extra point that gave King’s a
lead that they would never relinquish.
The Knights’ interior line dominated the line of scrimmage on
both sides of the ball for most of
the game. By the end of the
third quarter, King’s had outgained Hoquiam 307 yards to
121. In addition, the interior line
and linebackers had recorded
seven sacks with the front four of
Ed Sundquist, Duncan Cull, Taylor
Schoenfeld, and Jack McLeod
each recording a sack. In addition, Cull and Schoenfeld each
had a fumble recovery.
In the first half, the Knights’
offense fed off of the field
position that the defense gave
them by scoring 35 unanswered
points on their first five possessions. Along with Mitchell’s first
touchdown, Wilkins hit Jake
Welch and Ed Sundquist with
scoring strikes of 17 and 11
yards respectively. In addition,
Andrew Cline and Jackson
Whitaker each scored a rushing
touchdown.
At the beginning of the 4th
quarter, following a Hoquiam
touchdown, King’s scored their
final touchdown on a Wilkins to
Cline pass that covered 21
yards.
Hoquiam would score two

KNIGHTS’ DEFENSE HAD 7 SACKS

BEN HERMES AND ATLEY SHAPIRO
EACH HAD 1 INTERCEPTION
touchdowns late in the
fourth quarter when the
outcome of the game was
well decided to cut the
King’s lead to 42 - 21.
Wilkins finished the game
with 161 passing yards
and four touchdowns. Cline
led all rushers with 147
yards on 20 carries. The
leading receiver for Kings
was Welch with seven receptions for 84 yards.
With the win, King’s tied
the all time school record
with 11 wins. Their next
game will be Friday, November 29th at 1 p.m.
against Montesano in the
Tacoma Dome.

Inside the Huddle: The line continued the tradition of “hitters”
By Sam Roach
King’s made history last Saturday. For the first time in the
history of the King’s High
School football program, the
Knights will be playing a 13th
game and it will be in the
Tacoma Dome. It took eleven
tries dating back to 1986 to
get to Round Three of the
state tournament but this
group got it done and one of
the big reasons was the offensive and defensive lines.
I suppose a bit of history
might be in order here. I was
the running back and linebacker coach of that first
team to make it to Round Two
back in ‘86 and I knew the
linemen on that team. The
theme for that year was
“hitters” and it was born the
previous year in the locker
room at what is now Sultan
Middle School. We had just
played a miserable game
where the Turks had out hit us
and handed us our hats 30
something to 12. At the end
of that game, in that locker
room, Coach Tom Luehmann
had his team repeat over and
over until he was convinced
they believed it, “That will
never happen to us again.”
Guys like D.J. Hill, the center
on that team, guard Andy Hall,
and tackle/defensive end Brad
Taylor took it to heart. The
next year, as seniors, their
team finished 10 - 1 and although their season ended with
an interception in the end zone
in the closing seconds of a 12 7 game against Tenino, nobody ever out hit that group.
I have to smile as I remember
those guys and then, when I
compare them to this group of
linemen who call themselves
King’s Knights 29 years later,
my smile gets a bit bigger.
Those two lines would have
gotten along quite well together because in 2015, this group
gets it.
They sure did on Saturday.
Last Saturday, that group
moved bodies. In the first half
King’s ran 34 offensive plays.
They gained 256 yards of total offense and scored 35
points. Equally impressive was
this stat. They gave up zero
sacks and they gave up no
tackles for loss. The running
backs averaged 7.4 yards per
carry and when play on the
line of scrimmage looked more
like a rugby scrum than a football play, the pile was moving
forward.
Defensively, the athleticism
and strength of that defensive
line forced Hoquiam quarterback Gregory Dick to scramble
all day long, sacking him five
times and forcing him to fumble
twice. In addition, in the first
half, the Grizzlies averaged
less than two yards per carry
on the ground and gave up six
tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
At the end of the day, this
group of linemen were as much
hitters as their counterparts 29
years earlier were. On the
offensive side of the ball, Ryne
Badgley, Jack McLeod, Taylor
Schoenfeld, Jordan Burtt, Chris
Metzger and Ethan Vyhmeister
were the main reason that Koa
Wilkins had the time that he
needed to complete four touchdown passes and they were the
main reason that Andrew Cline
was able to rush for 147
yards. This group owned the
line of scrimmage.
To wrap up here, it wouldn’t
be right not to mention some
individual statistics. McLeod,
Schoenfeld, Duncan Cull, and
Ed Sundquist all recorded
sacks. Cull also added five
tackles, forced a fumble recovery and had a recovery of his
own. Defensive end Jackson
Whitaker, in only his second
game back, recorded three
solo tackles and one sack.
I don’t know if there were any
members of the ‘86 hitters in
the crowd but if there were, I’m
sure they approved because,
like the line that preceded them
29 years earlier, the 2015 line
is a group of hitters.
