2015 ANNUAL REVIEW Westchester Jewish Community Services Strengthening Lives. Shaping Futures. WJCS shone the light on mental health in the African-American community at its annual Kurz Conference with keynote speaker Terrie Williams, from left, author of Black Pain; Mark Herceg, Commissioner, Westchester County Dept. of Community Mental Health, and WJCS CEO Alan Trager. Honoring Karen Blumenthal, second left, and Emily Grant, at WJCS 2015 Gala were, from left, WJCS President Barry Kaplan, WJCS CEO Alan Trager and WJCS COO Bernie Kimberg. White Plains Mayor Tom Roach presented a proclamation to WJCS Kids’ Kloset represented by WJCS’ Stephanie Roth and Susan Lewen at its Fashion Show Fundraiser for helping to clothe kids in need in Westchester. With Frank Williams, Jr., second right, executive director of the White Plains Youth Bureau and keynote speaker at the WJCS Dr. Martin Luther King Commemoration, are WJCS’ Kay Griffin, COO Bernie Kimberg and Beth Thompson. New York State Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, left, visited WJCS Off the Street Program that boosts the academic performance of kids at Hamilton Elementary School in Mt. Vernon. The philosopher and scientist Aristotle poignantly noted what is now a cliché: “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” WJCS embraces the chance to join forces with critical partners to provide the greatest care for individuals facing significant life challenges. Importantly, we have learned that this approach has the potential to realize exponential results – to create positive change in communities and increase opportunities for the overall well-being of entire populations. Whether through recovery services to people challenged by mental illness, home care to isolated Holocaust survivors, vocational programming to individuals with disabilities, treatment to children traumatized by sexual abuse or early literacy services to families in low-income communities, we understand that to have substantial and lasting impact, WJCS must view the world through a larger lens. Expanded WJCS collaborations with schools, primary care providers, government and other human services agencies, businesses, families and individuals continuously remind us of the importance of addressing broader personal, societal and environmental factors when designing and enhancing agency programs and services. Alan Trager, Chief Executive Officer This larger lens helps WJCS staff, board members and volunteers to understand that their work is an intrinsic part of a greater whole required to support their neighbors in need and to strengthen their local communities. As always, we are inspired by the 20,000 people who come to WJCS each year to conquer adverse experiences and situations and we again express our gratitude to our outstanding staff, generous Board of Directors, volunteers, community partners and individual, foundation, corporate and government supporters. You make our work possible. President Barry Kaplan Vice President Victor Hershaft Shirley Shwiel, Secretary Neil Sandler, Treasurer Directors Louise Albin David A. Alpert Michel Araten Froma B. In recognition of the strong correlation of overall health and mental health, the agency added licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in two clinics who conduct initial meetings with clients prior to meetings with therapists, check vital signs, liaise with primary care physicians and educate clients about the interdependence of health and mental health, which leads to I n 2015, WJCS continued evolving to keep pace with the rapid changes and trends in the increasingly complex healthcare industry with shifts toward integrated health services, easier access to care and supporting the “total person,” whether in the mental health clinics or in group homes. Also, high on the agenda was preparation better outcomes. The four mental health clinics continued to employ “peers” – individuals who themselves or through a family member, have experienced mental health problems. These valuable team members advocate on behalf of clients, lead wellness groups and support the work of the clinicians. The peers continued in formal training, working toward New York State certification. for dealing with the pervasive effects of trauma in the entire client community and implementing major enhancements in academic, vocational and social services for clients from preschoolers to seniors. AGENCY EXPANDS TRAUMA-INFORMED INITIATIVE Based on WJCS’ 30-year history of experience and expertise through its Treatment Center for Trauma and Abuse and research showing how pervasive trauma is — impacting one in four people—, the agency began an intensive training program for all program staff to become trauma-informed. The initiative, which includes trauma identification, understanding and intervention, will continue during 2016, thanks to the financial support of a WJCS Board member. 2 Total health also was the focus in the adult care management program, which works with individuals experiencing serious health and/or mental health problems to improve Simultaneously, in its continuing push to deliver the high- their quality of life and reduce unnecessary hospital emer- est-quality clinical services based on research-proven practic- gency room visits. As a result of a rising number of referrals, the care manager staff was increased from five to seven and the program moved to a larger, independent space in Yonkers. Coordinated services also were offered to younger clients and families in Yonkers as a clinician and family support worker from the clinic teamed with a pediatrician and nurse at the Hudson River HealthCare site, allowing children and families to receive services at the pediatric office, reducing the stigma and inconvenience of going to the mental health clinic. services through funding from the County and an eye toward staffing and operating a café for the JCC of Mid-Westchester is being studied. WJCS’ expertise in caring for individuals with disabilities was tapped as Family Services of Westchester hired the agency to train direct support professionals who care for clients with co-occurring disabilities and dementia and Alzheimer’s. NEW HEALTHCARE INITIATIVES LAUNCHED FOR THE JEWISH COMMUNITY Additional work in the area of dementia and Alzheimer’s was undertaken by the Pathways to Care program, which was awarded a five-year grant from the Alzheimer’s Association of Hudson Valley to provide family caregivers with care-planning assessments and information about available county resources.
