2015 ANNUAL REVIEW
Westchester Jewish
Community Services
Strengthening Lives. Shaping Futures.
WJCS shone the light on mental health in the African-American
community at its annual Kurz Conference with keynote speaker
Terrie Williams, from left, author of Black Pain; Mark Herceg,
Commissioner, Westchester County Dept. of Community Mental
Health, and WJCS CEO Alan Trager.
Honoring Karen Blumenthal, second left, and Emily Grant, at WJCS 2015 Gala were, from left,
WJCS President Barry Kaplan, WJCS CEO Alan Trager and WJCS COO Bernie Kimberg.
White Plains Mayor Tom Roach presented a proclamation to
WJCS Kids’ Kloset represented by WJCS’ Stephanie Roth and
Susan Lewen at its Fashion Show Fundraiser for helping to
clothe kids in need in Westchester.
With Frank Williams, Jr., second right, executive director of the White Plains Youth Bureau and
keynote speaker at the WJCS Dr. Martin Luther King Commemoration, are WJCS’ Kay Griffin,
COO Bernie Kimberg and Beth Thompson.
New York State Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, left, visited WJCS
Off the Street Program that boosts the academic performance
of kids at Hamilton Elementary School in Mt. Vernon.
The philosopher and scientist Aristotle poignantly noted what is now a cliché: “the whole is
greater than the sum of its parts.”
WJCS embraces the chance to join forces with critical partners to provide the greatest care for
individuals facing significant life challenges. Importantly, we have learned that this approach
has the potential to realize exponential results – to create positive change in communities
and increase opportunities for the overall well-being of entire populations. Whether through
recovery services to people challenged by mental illness, home care to isolated Holocaust
survivors, vocational programming to individuals with disabilities, treatment to children traumatized by sexual abuse or early literacy services to families in low-income communities, we
understand that to have substantial and lasting impact, WJCS must view the world through
a larger lens. Expanded WJCS collaborations with schools, primary care providers, government and other human services agencies, businesses, families and individuals continuously
remind us of the importance of addressing broader personal, societal and environmental
factors when designing and enhancing agency programs and services.
Alan Trager, Chief Executive Officer
This larger lens helps WJCS staff, board members and volunteers to understand that their
work is an intrinsic part of a greater whole required to support their neighbors in need and
to strengthen their local communities.
As always, we are inspired by the 20,000 people who come to WJCS each year to conquer
adverse experiences and situations and we again express our gratitude to our outstanding
staff, generous Board of Directors, volunteers, community partners and individual, foundation, corporate and government supporters. You make our work possible.

IN REVIEW
A SHARPENED FOCUS ON THE “TOTAL PERSON”
The focus on the “total person” also led to enhancements
in both the clinics and residential programs. In recognition of the strong correlation of overall health and mental
health, the agency added licensed practical nurses (LPNs)
in two clinics who conduct initial meetings with clients
prior to meetings with therapists, check vital signs, liaise with
primary care physicians and educate clients about the
interdependence of health and mental health, which leads to

the rapid changes and trends in the increasingly complex healthcare industry with shifts toward integrated
health services, easier access to care and supporting the

group homes. Also, high on the agenda was preparation
better outcomes.
The four mental health clinics continued to employ “peers”

have experienced mental health problems. These valuable
team members advocate on behalf of clients, lead wellness
groups and support the work of the clinicians. The peers continued in formal training, working toward New York State

client community and implementing major enhancements
in academic, vocational and social services for clients from
preschoolers to seniors.
AGENCY EXPANDS TRAUMA-INFORMED INITIATIVE
Based on WJCS’ 30-year history of experience and expertise through its Treatment Center for Trauma and Abuse and
research showing how pervasive trauma is — impacting one
in four people—, the agency began an intensive training
program for all program staff to become trauma-informed.
The initiative, which includes trauma identification, understanding and intervention, will continue during 2016, thanks
to the financial support of a WJCS Board member.
